Re: Moving to Google Groups

2006-02-12 Thread Andrew Kershaw
Given the recent row between Google and the Justice Department and
all the news about how search engines track our activities online, it
is really wise to use Google (or Yahoo! or MSN or...) Groups for
this? I noticed as I was signing up that Creating a Google Account
activates Personalized Search, which finds the search results most
relevant to you based on your search history and more. That's
pretty disturbing to me. I know I can turn it off, but somehow I
doubt that checkbox actually disables this feature of Google.

Google can track me by IP, and I can't do anything about that. But
voluntarily giving Google more info (like my email address, my
proclivity for talking about Macs, etc) sounds like a bad idea.
Right now, somebody has to go figure that out by adding up
information from various websites. Using Google puts it all right
there in Google's database.

Is anybody else concerned about this, or am I just paranoid?

Oh, you aren't the only one concerned, but there isn't going to be
much occurring that isn't _already_.

The web archives of this list are open, and google is already
indexing these lists. Same with some of the netbsd ones I'm on- I
googled for ideas about a problem I was having, top on the list of
hits, the post I'd made the previous day s to port-cobalt.

Look, it took me 5 seconds to take a snip from your last email to
this list (of Feb 4) and find you via google: (the h t t p part
whacked to try and defeat list filters):
www.google.com/search?hl=enlr=q=%22IOxperts+wrote+a+Prism+chipset
+driver...%22btnG=Search

What have you been *doing* for almost 2 weeks without a post here,
Drew? Meeting with your radical Mac underground group? :) We will
have to watch you more closely.

Seriously, this search engine creep isn't a great thing, especially
with the google toolbar sucking all you *documents* to their server
for harvesting- unbelieveable! But moving the lists to google, while
I don't like it either (will the darn footers get shorter as the big
guy will get ad revenue now??? I hope so) won't obviously be that
much different than what gets archived now.

I guess you could count google's access to full email addresses as a
change, since currently those are munged in the archive. The munging
is a comparatively new thing though, IIRC they used to be put back
intact. So all of our full email addresses persist in google forever
from those days.

Once you sign up you can have it send e-mail to you, so it's just
like it is now, the e-mails are coming from a different source,
that's all. You don't have to use the web interface at all.

Maybe not, but there is a Firefox extension called CustomizeGoogle that

I'm not that thrilled about the issues this raises either. But I can
understand why Dan is moving the lists, since the Maclaunch service has
drawbacks of other kinds.

The group site http://groups.google.com/group/powerbooks doesn't
say a thing about being able to do this, and I didn't seen anything
on the LEM site about the PowerBooks list, either.

Why is it that Dan wants to move to Google Groups? Other than the
ease of use for him (and making things more complicated for us), is
there a reason? I can remember when he was running these lists off a
Mac in his basement, and I understood the costs and expenses
associated with that.

I don't understand the need to move to Google Groups. Has he posted
why he's moving all the lists go GG?

Moving to Google Groups

2006-02-11 Thread Dan Knight
Members of the 1st PowerMacs list,

We're slowly moving the Low End Mac email lists from Maclaunch to
Google Groups, which we see as a real improvment.

Google Groups functions as an email list, so if you want to keep doing
things like you have in the past, that's fine. It also adds a
searchable online archive plus the ability to read and reply to posts
using your browser.

To sign up for the new list, go to
http://groups.google.com/group/powerbooks

There are some things about Google Groups that are a bit different, so
be sure to read the updated list FAQ, which explains the subscription
confirmation system and some other features, such as online
subscription management.
