We converted a 520C to a 5300 by just swapping the board - so I think? the
answer's yes they are identical. But others may confirm or deny

I think you mean that you converted a 190c to a 5300 by swapping the
motherboard. The 5x0 series and the 5300 have no identical parts, as
far as I know.

The trackpad mechanism itself may be swappable, but I'm pretty sure
that it isn't. I believe the 5x0 series used a 1st generation
trackpad, the 5300 a 2nd generation trackpad, and the 190, 2300, and
1400 all used a 3rd generation trackpad. The connectors on each
should be unique. Anyone with a 5300 and a 500 series care to take a
look?

The buttons are different, however. I've never taken apart a 520,
but I doubt it's button can be used in a 5300.

My suggestion is that you pick up an entire PowerBook _190_ palmrest
assembly on eBay or the Swap List and swap the assembly in your 5300
for it. The assembly should cost between $5 and $10.

Peace,
Drew

Yes, the 500 and 5300 TPs should be swappable (same PCB part number,
chips and connector.) Haven't done it myself though, at least not that I
can recall. :-)

The 2300, 190, 3400, Kanga and Wallstreet pads should all be
interchangable (exactly the same-shape PCB and same connector.) I've used
3400 TPs in 2300 and 190 TPs in 3400. The 2300's pad is the only one
that's _not_ 'tappable'.

Wallstreet's TP is nearly identical, but its PCB's model number is TM1002
vs. model TM1001 on the earlier TP (with one chip having a similar PN
difference.) I've not used a WS TP in other 'Books so I can't say for
sure if it'd work or not, though I bet it would.

Thanks for filling us in, Dan!

So the 5300 and 500 trackpads should be interchangeable.

Actually, each model that comes out has a new revision number on the
trackpad itself, as far as I can tell. I'm pretty sure that the
Wallstreet's is a Rev H, whatever that means. Or maybe that was my
Pismo Either way, the part numbers ought to be the same for all
of them as the design hasn't really changed in the last 10 years or
so. FWIW, the Pismo's trackpad looks the same as my Wallstreet's -
it has the same ribbon connector and everything. It does look like
it's integrated into the palmrest, though, and not removable.

The 2300's pad is the only one

Mine certainly is! :-D I didn't do any swapping - it came from the
factory that way (though I should say that I bought it as-is on
eBay just last week, so I'm not the original owner). From what I've
read online, though, the 2300 ought to have at least a 2nd generation
(tappable) trackpad.

Peace,
Drew
