All PowerBooks, and for that matter every laptop I have ever used in my
entire life works without the batteries.

 Except the Mac Portable.

Actually, with a little extra juice through the AC adapter, my Portable works
fine with a duff battery. The battery *is* installed, but I'm quite sure it
doesn't work (it certainly doesn't hold a charge, but the machine works
otherwise).

Sure. I have a couple of 540s and when I first got them the
batteries were completely flat. While working on the batteries I ran
them on the power supplies alone. The 5X0 series are oddities in
that they have separate computer and charging power coming from the
power supply.

After working on the batteries two are still flat while the other two
will run the 540 for about 10 minutes.

2. Need recommendation/s on where to find battery/ies and AC adapter
I haven't found any batteries for sale that I'd want to pay for, they
are over $100. Unfortunately the 5X0 batteries are probably the most
expensive in comparison to their capacity.

I've seen power supplies around, you just need to search for them. I
don't know of a particularly cheap source.

3. Any further recommendations? I'll try to boot from a generic power supply
- any idea what is the pin out for the adapter?
I'd recommend against this unless you have some skill with electronics.

4. Anything else I should be paying attention?

P.S. this PB will be used for simple word processing, so what is your
recommendation for a free word processing program that is M$ compatible?

Well, since my PB 190 does (it came with a totally dead battery, though
mine came with an AC adapter), I'll venture to say that yours will too.
When I use my PB indoors, I always use it plugged in the wall -- the
batteries are for outdoor use.

2. Need recommendation/s on where to find battery/ies and AC adapter

Try http://www.nexcomp.com. That's where I bought new batteries for my
PB. Um, but didn't you just say you had an AC adapter if not batteries?
Actually, I'd suggest that you first Google before you visit nexcomp.com:
Macintosh PowerBook 520 specifications for power supply and battery
specs in addition to general specs (maybe you can get the specific model
number of the battery your PB takes this way).

That's about all I can try to help you with, since I've never met a 520
in person and I don't use MicroBorg. ;-)

Good luck.

The 500 series is an odd one: two 14.7 volt circuits side by side. I'd

Naftali, congratulations on the purchase. I hope your Powerbook
treats you well.

I bought a 520c off of eBay several months back, and it's provided me
with a fun hobby. I can answer a few questions:

1. As far as I can tell you don't need to have any batteries for the
'book to work, as long as it's plugged into a wall outlet.

2. I was fortunate enough to get batteries included in my powerbook.
But I did need an AC adapter, which I purchased off eBay at a
reasonable price, as I recall.

Good luck! -Matt Kuhns

Hello Henri:

When you get the shiny metal LCD screen out, you have to disassemble the
LCD assembly. You will need very small Phillips and blade screwdrivers.
You can get such from Radio Shack or other electronic supply stores.
You may also be able to find the fluorescent bulb there also. You will
probably have to ask the clerk to order it for you.

PB520 and 802.11b???

2002-10-12 Thread Arlis R Tyner
Hello, everybody.

I am a longtime vintage Mac aficionado, but I'm new to this group.

I was recently given a Powerbook 520, and I was wondering if anyone could tell me the
feasibility of using this machine for wireless internet. I've been seeing a lot of
articles recently about making an 802.11b antenna from a Pringles can and 6 or 7

This Powerbook is my only computer, and it would be great if I could make it work with
one of these cheap Pringles can antennas.

Do I need a wireless network card? Can the PB520 even accept one, or be modified to do
so?

Sorry for sounding like such a newbie, but the last time I had regular access to my
own computer this Powerbook was the latest thing in laptop computing, and I was still
making do with a 3 year old Performa.

Thanks,

Arlis Tyner

Hi Kevin,

transceiver a crossover cable to connect to the PC's
network card. Anything else needed? What software
needs to be set up on the PC the PB?

I did that a few weeks ago, it's pretty easy. You do not need any other
hardware.
Concerning the soft part, microsoft has added an internet connection
sharing utility to it's Windows OS since Windows 98SE. So if you have
Win98SE or above, you are all done. I did that with system 7.5 on the
powerbook, i guess that it should work with system 7.1 but i have never
tried.

All you have to do is :
1) install (if it's not allready installed) the internet sharing utility on
Windows (using add/remove programs)
2) on the mac, choose to get the IP address via DHCP

Could you tell us what OS you have on the PC and on the mac so we could
tell you more precisly what are the differents steps to go through.

Thanks! - Kevin

that's a pleasure :-)

Re: PB520 questions- New to List

2002-08-20 Thread Bruce Johnson

Kevin Rogers-Kari Moyle wrote:

At first the screen would flash yellow, now the screen
has vertical white lines across the top half of the

Yes. (Could be either...though a connection or failing cable is more likely)

It came
with 3 batteries that won't hold a charge. Anyway to
 resurrect them?

Repeated application cycles of Intelligent Battery Recondition (from
Apple), Emmpathy (Someone on this list should know a link), and Battery
Amnesia http://www.kezer.net/amnesia.html can often revive dead
batteries. As Miracle Max sez: There's a big difference between dead,
and almost dead!

Was there ever an internal modem made
 that was faster than 19kbs?

Nope.

How about using the PCMCIA
like slot in the left battery compartment?

IF you're looking deep into the compartment to see it, you need the
PCMCIA adapter, comes in three varieties model A, B, and C.

If you have the adapter already (IE you've got two slots on the side of
the thing) all you need is the PCMCIA adapter software from Apple, and
any 16-bt card with a mac-compatible driver will work. This includes
flash adapters (no software needed) many modems, some ethernet adapters,
and allegedly wirelss cards like the orinoco silver, though I've yet to
be able to get mine to work properly on my 540C.

The adapters are available, and you'll need the model C if you ever want
to upgrade to the powerpc CPU upgrade (and they're priced accordingly),
but if you're not, the A or B models will work. The B model is better
than the A, as it fixed some bugs.

pb520 vertical lines through 1/2 screen

2002-07-26 Thread Travis Glaab

I have a recurring problem with my pb520. Vertical white lines will run
through the lower half of the screen.

Thinking it is a problem with the interconnect cable I'll fiddle with it for
a while, and suddenly the problem will be gone. I've tried to be systematic
to identify the exact source of the trouble, but I haven't had any luck.

After a few days of use it will happen again.

I would appreciate any advice.

I'll bet you will find that there is a pin bent over and touching
the adjacent one at one end of the interconnect-to-motherboard cable. Be
very careful in straightening it, if this is the case. I use a very sharp
pointed knife blade.

Re: pb520 vertical lines through 1/2 screen

2002-07-26 Thread ALDENTAG

Maybe we should get together. I have a 2300c with 2 vertical stripes in the
right half of the screen. I've asked here if anyone had any ideas. Silence.
If you divide the right half of the screen into 4 parts, outside being #1,
stripes 2 and 4 are gray. Left half is fine; All unstriped parts are OK. Boot
up is fine. Frustrating. Have you had any helpful answers?
