You could always run the programs and see how much memory each is using.
I think it's a case of YMMV. (The heavy users here can advise you better
than I can--I ask for more help here than I've given. :) )

On my 5300 and 520c I've been a big fan of RamDoubler--it does of good job
of using unused memory blocks and making the PB think it's got a lot more
memory than it physically does. It only does disk writing in extreme
cases, if my reading of the manual is correct.

Re: Update on my PB2400c CompactFlash boot drive adventure (was Hard drive

2005-12-12 Thread gfdaught
Howard,

Greetings again. OK, I decided to turn off Virtual Memory. I notice the System
and apps are drawing more resources (particularly the System which has jumped
by almost 10MB with most of my apps open). I've regained some RAM using Audion
instead of iTunes (as was suggested). But I'm now about 7MB shy of being able
to open ALL my routine apps. How much free space should I leave? What likely
candidate control panels and extensions can I turn-off in the System to try to
regain some RAM?

For example, if I'm no longer messing around with Appearance, General Controls,
keyboard, numbers, etc., etc. can I turn these off? As for extensions, I've
already turned off QuickDraw 3D, but what about MPEG Extension, Musical
Instruments, PowerPlug and VR in QuickTime 5.0.2, etc.? Also, are installed
Fonts actually using RAM, or only storage space for apps like Word? And what
about all the Microsoft extensions (eek!)? I know the answer depends on what
apps I actually use, but if there are some obvious RAM hogs I can turn off that
is what I'm after. Thanks!

Gary

Using VM is up to the user--I never have used it, but I've been lucky
enough to have had enough memory for my applications. I suppose had I had
my 520c for example, with only the original 8mg vs the 36 that I ended up
with (36? I think that was the amount), I would have turned VM on.

A synopsis of the Sandisk white paper is on Rich Dreher's CFFA website:
http://dreher.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=15

It shows that the # of writes to the CF while very high, isn't infinite.
(Personally, as I said, I'd only worry about it if I were using it as
VM--each block write is counted. Otherwise as just a startup device,
while using the HD for storage, I think you'll be ok.)

Howard,

Greetings. Sure, I'd be interested in this URL. Incidentally, if I have enough
RAM for routine use, do I even need to turn on Virtual Memory at all?
Alternatively, if I reassign VM to the hard drive, what effect will this have
on hard drive spin-up?

The only reason to not use the CF as VM is that compactflash does have a
limited life for writing to the media - it's in the millions of writes so it
may not be an immediate problem. You can READ from a CF unlimited numbers of
times tho. (There's a white paper on this on sandisk's website somewhere--I can
track down the URL if anyone's interested. I haven't read it in a couple of
years. It was discussed when a gent named Rich Dreher released an interface
card for the Apple II (yes, Apple II! :) ) that lets you use a CF as your //'s
hard-drive. Writing to an 8- or 16-bit computer is a lot less intensive than
using VM on a Mac. :) )
