Re: should I get a G3 Kanga, 1400 or 2400?

2005-04-15 Thread ACFX44501

If you modify the card cage, then the Kanga will physically accept a
PCMCIA card, which is a prereqisite for accepting a USB or Firewire card.

The Kanga will take PCMCIA (AKA PC Card) cards already.

Of course, I *intended* to state: If you modify the card cage, then the
Kanga will physically accept a *Cardbus* card.

The Kanga was designed to accept a Cardbus card, but it was *not*
supplied with a Cardbus-compliant card cage, rather it was supplied with
a PCMCIA-compliant card cage.

I have previously posted a photomacrograph of the required physical
modification.

Also, the lower slot of the Kanga is not wired for a DVD decoder card,
 which the Wallstreet is.

You mean zoomed video support. Both the 3400 and the Kanga have that.

So, zoomed video support of the 3400 and 3500 (Kanga) implicitly means
that the wallstreet DVD decoder card also works in those machines?

 No, that was the Duo.

 You're half-right. The 210-250 Duo's were .2 pounds lighter than the
2400, the 270-280's .4 pounds heavier. In a blindfold test I'd be hard
pressed to tell which PB was .2 pounds lighter...perhaps your senses are
 more finely tuned...?

No, I just know where to find the AppleSpec Database:

http://www.info.apple.com/support/applespec.legacy/index.html

These are Apple's smallest and lightest notebooks:

PowerBook G4 12: 1.18 x 10.9 x 8.6 (= 110.6132 ci); 4.6 lbs.
PowerBook Duo: 1.9 x 10.9 x 8.5 (= 129.71 ci); 4.2 lbs.
iBook dual USB 12: 1.35 x 11.2 x 9.06 (= 136.9872 ci); 4.9 lbs.
PowerBook 100: 1.8 x 11 x 8.5 (= 168.3 ci); 5.1 lbs.
PowerBook 2400: 1.9 x 10.5 x 10.5 (= 209.475 ci); 4.4 lbs.

And it looks like I was wrong, too. The 12 PowerBook is actually the
smallest notebook Apple ever made! (Although not the lightest: that is still
the duo.)

I haven't heard of a built in CD-R for anything before a Wallstreet either.
The Kanga will definitely be the faster machine and it can take the

One drive which will fit in the 1400's 12X media unit is:

I've seen these for at least $10 less than that quoted above, elsewhere.

Of the three PB's you're considering I'd personally opt for the Kanga.
Largest screen, fastest CPU and highest RAM ceiling of the three. It's
a bit of a brick, though - as is the 1400.

The 2400c is an intriguing possibility, but not if you're budget-minded.
It's Apple's smallest and lightest laptop ever, mainly because it has
no internal drives at all. The cost of all the accessories to give it
the functionality you want can add up in a hurry. Plus, the Comet is
still highly prized by a lot of folks - finding one you can afford isn't
easy.
