Who says we're not welcome. Our own liberal reporters interview lots of
Iraquis who say they don't want us there but at the same recognize that if
we leave there will be even worse civil war. In any case, I think maybe we
should pull out and let the Iraquis reduce their population by themselves.
Then if the Iranians or Syrians come in we can nuke them too.

On the other hand the same people clammering for us to leave Iraq are
wanting to go into Darfur and save the civilians. The crybabies can't have
it both ways.

I do it all the time using vfp9. It will also work in previous versions. You
just need the runtime files to go with it.

Anybody guess what a 700 watt 2.45 Ghz transmitter is used for? Most of us
have them. Virgil, don't give it away.

My 2 cents: I carry on conversations with people half way around the world
using less than 5 watts. It's called QRP in case you are interested. In
order to receive the waves that far away, you need an antenna that is the
correct length to resonate. A full wave antenna for your 2.5 ghz wireless
system would be about 29". Half a wave and a quarter wave will resonate
also. I believe that any conductor 29" or 14.5" or 7.25" will resonate. I
further believe that anything in your body (nerves or blood vessels) at
those lengths will resonate and create heat better than other lengths.
Although the affect is minimal based on the power and distance from the
transmitter, I think it has an effect and I act accordingly.

For several years the ham radio license tests have included radio frequency
safety.

I have noticed my ear getting hot when talking on the cell phone for
extended times and have switched to a headset for those calls.

This is my understanding of the affects of radio waves and may not be anyone
elses.

Yeah! The Nazi's used to do that in France. They were judged in
Nuremberg for that, though.

Bulllshhi! You don't have the money or the personnel to do that.
A police state is expensive, not economically sound.

You're full of crap -- we don't avoid baths!:-) :-)

As one who was there and remembers (a lot of it ), we didn't have much
worth "dropping into". Dropping out and using "drugs" was the rational
response to the paternalistic, booze fed hypocrisy and insanity of the
50s/60s. And for anyone paying attention, there's even less worth
"dropping into" now...

As for Open Source -- the values of the Open Source community are a
breath of fresh air...build it out of a sense of freedom and
intellectual curiosity and if you make a buck, cool, if not, you still
have the satisfaction of doing it.

If there's enough call for government (at whatever level) to
officially define such limits, they will. People like the original
blogger you quoted will disagree loudly if they feel differently.

Until then, whether we're talking about the cafe or your example of
neighbors, government/police don't get involved until there's a
complaint. I only bring this up because of the subject line you put
on this; government is responding to citizens, not patrolling
arbitrarily for WiFi violators.

Yeah, and if I leave the receipts for the cafe lying around

I noticed my connections were rather slow one day and
checked who was attached to my router, and found 2
other neighbors logged in.

Instead of calling the police, I turned on security.

A remedy for the coffee house would be to change the
password every day and only give the password out to
someone who's purchased coffee.

I'll guess that he wasn't arrested because the police WiFi squad was

Hi Bill!

That's why the interment camp idea is better. They are just cooling their

RE: [NF] code question

2007-05-23 Thread Virgil Bierschwale
Thanks.
I wrote all this about a year ago and haven't had time to finish it.

Trying to finish it now and I've been looking at the w3schools.com examples

They give you enough to make you dangerous, but not enough to help, at least
in this case.

I'm considering rewriting it using this example just because its easier to
maintain, but the example shows using an access table and I can't find what
the proper syntax is for sql server in the following example..

I'll find it, just may have to drink a couple of beers and spend the evening
googling

<%
set conn=Server.CreateObject("ADODB.Connection")
conn.Provider="Microsoft.Jet.OLEDB.4.0"
conn.Open "c:/webdata/northwind.mdb"

set rs = Server.CreateObject("ADODB.recordset")
rs.Open "SELECT * FROM Customers", conn

do until rs.EOF
  for each x in rs.Fields
Response.Write(x.name)
Response.Write(" = ")
Response.Write(x.value & "")
  next
  Response.Write("")
  rs.MoveNext
loop

rs.close
conn.close
%>

VBScript, which it appears is what you're using, does implicit
conversions from integers to strings when concatenating it using the &
operator, saving you from having to convert ever single integer. If
you need to force it, you can use the CStr function.

Note that you MUST make sure you use a quote() function whenever you
create SQL where clauses-- never just use single quotes on either
side, even if the text shouldn't have any embedded apostrophes. It
appears the field you're getting is from the query string-- a
malicious individual could use SQL injection to delete records from
your tables, drop databases, etc...

As for a quote function, this is the one I often use:

Function quote(q_q)
 quote = replace(q_q, "'", "''")
End Function

Hi Nicholas!

No, too much radiation released into the atmosphere, to say nothing of the
women and children. Instead, round up 5000 male 'slims and put them in an
interment camp for each GI killed, including previous killings.

In a few weeks all the 'slims would be in the camp and no more killings,
except in the camp. These towns are not that big, if I understand the
situation correctly.

And seal the border so no more get in, for heaven's sake.

Hi Virgil!

We have teenagers around here walking through the neighborhood checking car
door handles to try to find a car unlocked. When they find one they ransack
it, taking whatever they want from what they find.

The police catch them, but the judge lets them go. Somehow, I would prefer

Hi Virgil!

We have teenagers around here walking through the neighborhood checking car
door handles to try to find a car unlocked. When they find one they ransack
it, taking whatever they want from what they find.

The police catch them, but the judge lets them go. Somehow, I would prefer
they sit around using free Wi-Fi, but no one ever listens to me on crime.

Definitely. Don't spend gobs of money on mounts. I got a few at
monoprice.com for $13.xx/ea-- they're not awesome in quality, but they
work sufficiently well for me(I trust them to hold my panels). The
biggest complaint is the lag screws they come with-- just go right to
the hardware store and buy stronger ones to start.

That's what I'm thinking about doing.
Bought a dell and it came with the 20"

Looking at the two side by side, theres no comparison.

When I have the money, I will buy another dell with a 20" and a viewsonic
22"

That way I can monitor the market on the 20"'ers and do my work on the

Definitely worth it-- but get the same model. I have two of the same
model side by side with 2 17" monitors mounted above it for less

LCDs have one ideal resolution, typically. Going below these makes it
look far worse usually. I'm not sure how big you're looking for, but I
use Viewsonic 22" widescreens myself, which I very much like. I
believe they run at 1650x1050 or something like that.

I would at least research which one, and potentially buy before you
build too much of the screen around it. Could save some refactoring
later(which means more time/$$$ for your client).

[OT] And ya'll want the government to protect us ??

2007-05-23 Thread Virgil Bierschwale
This is about as stupid as it gets in my opinion.

1. Use free Wi-Fi, go directly to jail

Note to WiFi users: Free is not free. If you tap into a free hot spot, you
could end up getting arrested. As I write
  about in my
most recent blog, that's what happened to a Michigan man, when he was
arrested for tapping into a free Wi-Fi hot spot from his car rather than
from the cafe that sponsors the hot spot.

Sam Peterson was arrested when he used the Union Street Cafe's hot spot by
parking his car nearby, rather than going inside and buying a drink.
According to the Web site ars Technica, he told a reporter, "I knew that the
Union Street had WiFi. I just went down and checked my e-mail and didn't see
a problem with that."

I don't see a problem with it, either. But the police did...and so does the
state of Michigan. Michigan's "Fraudulent access to computers, computer
systems, and computer networks" law apparently bans such actions, even
though the Union Street Cafe's network is freely available. You need to be
inside the cafe rather than outside, in order to use it.

This isn't the first time someone has been arrested for using free Wi-Fi. As
I wrote about
in a previous blog, an Alaskan man was arrested for using the free WiFi
network of a public library after hours, while parked in his car.

These arrests are clearly ludicrous. The law needs to be clarified...and
free should mean free

I'd check the native resolutions on the LCD screens you might be
using-- just because they're big, doesn't mean they always have a high
resolution. It may also be wide-screen dimensions which could buy you
more screen real estate if this is the only system it will be
displayed on.

[OT] Odd arms build-up for China-Taiwan shoot out?

2007-05-23 Thread Pete Theisen
Hi Everybody!

China and Taiwan have been posturing in each other's direction for longer than
most people have been alive. However, there are always those who would like
to bring things to a head.

I have been scouring the gun shops for .30-06 ammunition for my 65 year old
U.S. Rifle Caliber .30, M 1 Garand for a LONG time. No one had any of that
particular round. One old shop owner offered the explanation that all the
production of .30-06 is being sent to China and/or Taiwan in preparation for
the big battle over Taiwan's Independence. The 101 year old .30-06?

Does anyone know if this is in fact happening? If so, why not something more
modern like 7.62, 5.8, or 5.56 to fit the weapons they supposedly have? Sure,
they could take .30-06 rounds apart and re-manufacture the powder and
material into rounds to fit modern military weapons, but why?

Oh, yeah. I finally found a box of .30-06 last night. Wal-mart of all places.

Hi Bob!

The Ds use treason as electoral politics fairly often, what is unbelievable is
that people still believe them. Short memories or no training in history for
the younger ones, I guess.

Hi Bill!

All Arabs consider the Ps 2nd class sub-humans, at best, and look at them at
their own convenience. Slaves, human shields, live target practice, whores -
everything traditional that comes the way of underclasses everywhere. It is
worse in the middle east where prejudices are all but official.

The American Ds will be ecstatic. "See, see??? We told you this would happen
right after we all voted for the invasion"

Re: [OT] GWB: Al-Qaeda Fund Raiser

2007-05-23 Thread Robert Calco
Speaking of enemy activity:

The Dems are caving on the troop withdrawal provision:

http://tinyurl.com/2dqbjr

Maybe it has something to do with the fact that their strategy has
encouraged Iran and their Al Qaeda friends to use this summer's pre-
Patraeus report period to ramp up their proxy war against us (duh):

http://www.guardian.co.uk/frontpage/story/0,,2085195,00.html

Meanwhile of course Bush is caving too, planning to hand Iraq over to
the UN:

http://www.guardian.co.uk/Iraq/Story/0,,2085981,00.html

It's certainly the smart thing to do politically---since the Dems
have been whining about how (for some inexplicable reason) only the
UN can solve the problem, let them adopt it and watch what happens
(poor Iraq)---but this whole thing is sad to watch because of the
manner in which political expediency has gotten the upper hand over
common sense and principle on all sides of the ostensible 'debate'.

If the Dems had not engaged in this unbelievable propaganda war to
demonize the President, we might have been able to crush the
terrorists in Iraq and given Iran all the incentive it needed to "do
the right thing". Instead, having gotten their precious power back,
the Dems have "lead" us to the point now that Iran is feeling its
oats and openly supporting the terrorists, and everyone is ducking
for cover.

If something is falling yet, it will be soon. Sadly, we have assumed
that position.

Dave,
I tried something like that *years* ago when I first had a play with C#
(.net v1) - the little grey cells aren't what they were but I'm pretty sure
I just set object properties and let the calling app retrieve them.

Andy,
The problem is passing an array reference back from a .net component
wrapped
up into a dll for Paul's icalendar "activex". Nothing to do with VFP or the
Organizer and I can't just get my head around the best way to do it.

I assume it's all local - so can't you pass an object ref instead?

RE: [NF] Lightweight Task Manager

2007-05-23 Thread Dave Crozier
Paul,
Correct! And it's doing my head in...so close but so far but I'll crack
it this week and maybe have something you can use - the problem is passing
array references which doeesn't seem to work so I may resort to simple XML
strings.

Anyhow what do you guys want me to do? I have some additions to the calendar
from the one posted on my website - mainly bug fixes and work-arounds along
with calendar printing generally to make it easier to use but haven't added
alarms as of yet or any other of the modules. The delay is purely due to the
fact that everyone here is happy with the product as it is currently so no
rush for the other features even though I'd like to push it on some more,
finishing off the alarms and adding tasks would be a good start and could
probably be done with a couple of days work.

How about me uploading the latest source and then someone else can pick it
up and run with it eh, OR do you all want a finished product you can pick up
and use (lazy buggers!)?

If enough people are interested (I know Sytze is because of his
complimentary email some time ago - thanks) I'll push it on.
