[OT] Outlook Express 'Send & Receive' Window Right Hand Side Bottom Icon/Button

2007-07-08 Thread Ajoy Khaund
Hi

When we click on OE 'Send & Receive' the window which displays the tasks been
carried out has a small icon in the bottom right hand side. If we click on it
the icon becomes a button with the image sideways. What does this thing do ?
Just not been able to make out nor have I been able to put in the correct words
to do a Google.

TIA

Leaving 'Scan Network Drives' turned on can absolutely cripple networks,

RE: Locked file access

2007-07-08 Thread mrgmhale

Agreed, in spades!

There was a software solutions company that had been telling their clients
to remove any AntiVirus apps as they slowed down their Firebird/IE based app
something fierce. When they installed their app at one of my client
locations, with a much larger database than their other clients, their app
was extremely slow. They made their initial mistake with me by casting
claims of a defective network simply because we were using 100vg (vg = Voice
Grade, which they said was inferior technology. VG means ethernet can run
on Cat3 and still provide reliable signals, it screams on Cat5 or higher.
They sure boned their credibility on that.).

Once I proved, using their performance criteria as stated in advance of the
test, the network was fast and reliable they next blamed Symantec AntiVirus.
Sure enough, turning it off helped a tiny bit, but not a lot. I had already
disabled scanning network drives long before. Turns out they cache the
ENTIRE set of tables from the Firebird Server to the local PCs when they
first load their app. Why? To enhance performance at the desktop level, of
course!. I still recall the look on the face of their lead designer when I
asked if he was caching all tables locally - he knew he was dead meat. For
most of their clients the AV apps were scanning all files from the network,
and some of the files were fairly big. Well, certainly the AV had to be the
problem, not the few hundred Mg of records coming over, whether they are
needed or not! In my client's case the files were so huge the SAV impact
would have had very little adverse impact anyway. Ed once told me that even
a good database can be ruined with shitty software design. Case in point,
eh?

But, still they felt we had to uninstall SAV, and run no protection on any
PCs or Servers, despite my having proven the SAV was not impacting their
application's performance in any practical manner (200+ PCs on the LAN at
the time). When I said we would toss their app out first, as Federal law
now requires businesses to take reasonable measures to prevent systems from
being compromised along with private consumer data, they redesigned their
app to not cache the largest tables locally, and ended up with a less
terrible app - still slow, but they popped in a larger Server to "fix" that.
It did no good. Good job, Idiots.

I didn't get this PDF, but I did get a blind email several weeks ago, as
did others on the LA Fox board. Then, a few weeks later, I got a blind
request for a Notes/Servoy/PHP developer. Strange, since I had never

Bob and company will be speaking at LA Fox on Tuesday. I'm looking

Re: [OT] George W. Bush - Terrorist in the White House

2007-07-08 Thread Leland F. Jackson, CPA
I think the except below is correct in stating the Germans were
meticulously in keeping records of the names of those who perished in
the death camp slaughter houses. I believe the archives of these
records have recently been made available to the survivors, so they can
know the fate of family members, but the records in the archive
substantiate the Holocaust, rather than refute it.

Although the site is clearly incorrect in its denial of the Holocaust,
it does provide some valid information for thought. For example, I
didn't know that President Bush's nomination of Robert Zoellick to
replace Paul Wolfowitz as head of the World Bank is also a card
carrying member of PNAC.

By the way, tell me again why we went to war with Iraq?

#---
Excerpt:
Studies of the grounds of Auschwitz - which is claimed to be the main
'death center' - show no evidence of mass killings. The crematoriums
were not large enough to kill millions of people and the so called 'gas
chambers' were merely used to disinfect clothing and other items that
carried diseases. The Germans were fastidious record keepers. It is said
that they employed a system designed by IBM. According to their records,
a total of 60,421 Jewish people died in Auschwitz from 1941 until the
camp was closed in 1944. The vast majority, 58,240, died of typhus.

Michael: When my daughter wanted to learn a language, I had her learn
FoxPro because there was a job for it working for her dad.

I learned Assembler, BASIC and FORTRAN in school but never used them (BASIC
was in its original form used to teach people FORTRAN). I learned CPM
because of the Commodore 64. I learned COBOL, RPG, and Business BASIC for
jobs that I took. I started my own business with QuickBasic and rewrote the
application in FoxPro. I have been using FoxPro for 16 years now.

When I learned FoxPro I thought it was the best language I have ever used.
I still feel for what I am doing it still is the very best. It is easy to
code, frameworks available, easy to implement at multiple sites, looks great
and runs great.

In the last three or four years I have had to add features to my
applications that required third-party libraries. I have been using West
Wind almost exclusively because they don't require registering with the OS.
This adds complexity and quite a bit of code.

Many of my applications pull XML from a web site. My FoxPro code requires
West Wind to get the job done. Email notifications is another example.

Python on the other hand requires 4 lines of code to do the same thing -
natively. You may or may not have heard this but "Python just works".

Native Python does everything and the syntax is very easy to use and
understand. There are hundreds of frameworks that help target Python to a
particular problem - like Dabo. You can do database access natively in
Python, but Ed and Paul have developed a framework that makes it even
easier. This doesn't apply to your nephew, but their framework makes it
easy for FoxPro people to do Python. Dabo also wraps wxpython and provides
a very consistent interface to the GUI - something us FoxPro people are used
to.

>From someone that has programmed in many languages for over 35 years I think
Python is the best thing going right now. I would recommend it to beginners
and experienced FoxPro programmers.

It is like FoxPro and BASIC before it in that it reminds me of the ocean.
You can bob around on the surface and be very happy. You can also delve
into the depths of the water.

I second Jeff's comments about Python. It is much more general-
purpose than VFP, in that you can do stuff that has nothing to do
with data at all, and you aren't tied to a single platform. One of
the guys in our user group writes a lot of the embedded logic for
Xerox's machines in Python that runs on some custom OS used for those
circuit boards.

Sure, you can do desktop apps with Dabo, but you can also do web
apps just as easily. You can write shell scripts easier in Python
than in bash, sh or zsh, and Python code is so much easier to read
than Perl. The software that is used for this list is written in
Python, as is SpamBayes and BitTorrent.

IOW, the possibilities are endless. That is extremely important to
someone starting out. It would be a very bad move to limit oneself to
a single vendor or a single platform.

Yes, that too. I just was typing for brevity.Your thoughts on
it, Ed?

Re: [NF] Suggestions for high school kid wanting to get intoprogramming

2007-07-08 Thread kam
Sounds great to me.

Now if we had a converter that would convert a significant percentage of VFP
code to python, you would probably see a lot of people
with a better future. I can assure you that the next time we rewrite code, it
will not be in a language that is tied to a single
operating system and/or vendor.

Do you think that M$ is aware that folks are thinking this since their
DotNet revolution? Or perhaps they feel that those are in the "20"
(percent) crowd and they only really care about the "80" (percent) crowd
as they'll still come out on top (profitability-wise) anyway

Kam: Like I have mentioned in my posts, I have written applications in many
languages. They are all different. I will, however, say that BASIC, VFP
and Python are very similar! Years ago I compiled my QuickBasic code in
FoxPro and corrected the errors.

I recommend continuing what you are doing and experiment with Python when
you have time. There are several great books. One of my favorite is the
"Python Phrasebook".

You will be surprised how quickly you come up to speed in Python. Also,
everyone talks about the VFP community. Well, you will be surprised at the
Python community and the number of frameworks.

NYC VFP User Group Reforming.

A New Visual FoxPro User Group is forming this summer in the NYC area.
Tentatively, the date is set for holding a VFPUG meeting in the context
of the General NYACC meeting on the 12th of July. NYACC is an acronym for
the New York Amateur Computer Club, which is the 2nd oldest computer club
in the USA.

The location will be announced soon, but here are some basic highlights
of the VFP-focused NYACC General Meeting. See http://www.nyacc.org

1. Peter Rooney and Lew Schwartz will give a presentation about using
databases, with the emphasis on Visual FoxPro .In addition, Peter and
Lew will show how to quickly build a VFP application utilizing VFP9 in an
adhoc fashion, showing the SPEED of RAD/D with VFP9.

2. William Sanders will give a presentation on 'How to be a successful
independant VFP Consultant'. He will go over the basics of how to
acquire new clients, how to handle marketing to small to medium-sized
businesses, and how to get past that 'VFP for appdev??' issue.

3. Raffle Prizes!!! Three VFP9 retail packs, 10 VFP shirts, 10 VFP
caps, 5 VFP totebags, and a new laptop!

4. The first 5 VFP developers who show up at the Meeting on the 12th

Oh come ON! This is high school level hazing, with the same level of fact
