Programmer's day

2008-09-13 Thread Adam Buckland
Please change the category for this and stop wasting bandwidth, this is
clearly not either [OT] or [NF] and just demonstrates the laziness of
people that can't be bothered to consider that this is far too off topic
for off topic and is demonstrably not not foxpro so should be classified
[IF] for Is Foxpro related.

Programmer's day is a whimsical holiday on the 256th day of the year
celebrated mostly by computer programmers (reason: 256 = 2 to the power
of 8
= the number of values representable in a byte of data). Traditions
include
drinking, behaving silly, coding silly programs, mini computer games,
playing with old computers, etc. Programmer's day usually falls on
September
13th; on leap years, it is September 12th.

Astrology, in as much as believing that stars influence our destiny, is
clearly nonsense, as the distance, and sheer multitude of stars would
clearly either have no effect, or the effects would cancel out.

Astrology, as in the observation of common characteristics of people
born at certain times of the year, possibly influenced by nutrition (or
lack of), or hours or sunlight, or...etc is more likely, but also
still probably nonsense.

RE: Programmer's day

2008-09-13 Thread Gil Hale
Greetings, and Welcome, Petr, from the Upstate New York VFP Geek...

[OT] is, as you correctly surmised, for topics that are Off Topic. Stuff
that really has less to do with technology and more with rants (imho) g.

[NF] is for topics that are technically oriented, but Not FoxPro related.
This is where a person may ask for help with a LAN or have an Operating
System related matter he/she wants to put forth for consideration.

A subject with neither [OT] or [NF] indicates it is a FoxPro related
subject.

If you prefer to be a member with only [NF] and FoxPro related (no [OT]) you
can do so. Although I found [OT] subjects quite amusing and informative,
after a while I migrated to the technical only part of the ProFox list.
Just a personal preference, and overloading of my InBox g...

I am hopeful you will find the info we discuss of value. You can retrieve
and review archived info at Leafe.com on FoxPro and other areas of
discipline (Linux, Dabo, etc.).

Gil

FW: DOG FOOD RECALL - Not On Topic, but important enough to violate that little filter

2008-09-13 Thread Gil Hale
I know this is an Off Topic issue, but if I did not get this out to all of
our ProFox ProLinux members and any of our members had pets who became
ill, I would feel terrible.

I did check out Google for Mars Petcare recall and ascertained it is a
valid recall, not a hoax.

Please forgive the obvious [OT] intrusion within our technical realm. This
is truly coming from one animal lover to others of my ilk.

Gil

Greetings Karen!

Thank you, thank you, than you! We use Pedigree wet packets to give some
balance to our Huskies. I will check the remaining packages out right now.

Joe, Dave Barb, this is a valid link. You need to check it out to make
certain your critters are not impacted by this recall.

 All,

I've continued researching the highly recommended D-Link DIR 655 (about
 $100 US).

My initial concern that this product might have problems with 64-bit
OS's (based on comments in NewEgg/Amazon reviews) seems to have been
false based on my continued research.

I'm going to give this product a try - I'll post back if I run into any
 problems.

 Thanks for everyone's help!

Sheee-ittt! There is a Cat7 spec!

http://www.connectworld.net/syscon/support.htm

1. What is the difference between CAT-5, CAT-5e, CAT-6, CAT-7...

The Simple Answer:
CAT-5 is rated to 100M
CAT-5e is rated to 350M keep reading below, used for gigabit - Gil
CAT-6 and CAT6e is rated to 550M or 1000M depending on your source
CAT-7 is supposedly rated to 700M or presumably 1000M

Today there is no approved CAT-6 or CAT-7. While some folks are selling
products they call Level 6 or 7, there aren't even specs for them, making
CAT-5e the best available option. CAT-6 cable is being made with 23 guage
conductor wire as opposed to the slightly smaller 24 guage for CAT-5e and
also has a separator to handle crosstalk better.

Both CAT-5 and CAT-5e have 100 ohm impedance and electrical characteristics
supporting transmissions up to 100 MHz. The differences between CAT-5 and
CAT-5e show in all aspects of performance: capacitance, frequency,
resistance, attenuation, and NEXT. CAT-5e components were designed with
high-speed gigabit Ethernet in mind. While CAT-5 components may function to
some degree in a gigabit Ethernet, they perform below standard during
high-data transfer scenarios. CAT-5e cables work with ATM and gigabit speed
products. Simply, if you are using a 100Mbps switch, get CAT-5e cable
instead of CAT-5.

CAT-5e is formally called ANSI/TIA/EIA 568A-5 or simply Cat-5e (the e stands
for 'enhanced'). CAT-5e is completely backward compatible with current CAT-5
equipment. The enhanced electrical performance of CAT-5e ensures that the
cable will support applications that require additional bandwidth, such as
gigabit Ethernet or analog video.

RE: [NF] Looking for small network gigabit router recommendation(CLARIFIED)

2008-09-13 Thread Anthony J. Gundrum
That's my problem. You need to upgrade the cabling to at least CAT6. My
reason for purchasing it was to replace a defunct router and there was no
reason not to get the DIR-655.

Can you use existing CAT 5 cabling or do you have to upgrade to CAT 6?

I'm connected to the citys fiber-lan via
ethernet.and pays for 100Mb/10Mb
downstream/upstream which cost me about 20€/30$ a
month. Pretty good deal I think.
Only problem was I only got about 20Mb/20Mb ie
20% of the promised downstream, but curiously
enough about 100% better upstream.
I used a Netgear WGT624 router at the time, and
after some research checking cabling and the
citys switch, founding no faults, I decided to
upgrade the routers firmware. The results was
about 100% better! I got about 40Mb/36Mb.
After research of reviews and such I decided to
buy the DIR-655, mostly based on the very high
througput on LAN. I don't use the WAN at the
moment but I want the speed between computers and
backup NAS to be as fast as possible.
Guess what - with this router I now get as high

Number 12 seems to get to the point.

12. Just tell me what cable I need...
If you need patch cords up to 25 feet, use CAT-5e stranded cable for ease of
flexibility.
If you are making linger runs or going through walls or ceilings, I'd go
ahead and use the CAT-6 UTP (solid) cables - if that seems a bit expensive,
then go with the CAT-5e UTP.

In my case I should be using CAT-6 since I have cabling going through walls
and floors over lengths of 25 feet. I know at work we've had issues with
reps using CAT-5e with their gigabit laptop connections. Once a CAT-6 or
CAT-7 cable was put in all the issues went away.

CAT-7 cable was put in all the issues went away.

That's my problem. You need to upgrade the cabling to at least CAT6.

Nope, just Cat53. Look at the other eMail I sent to ProFox on that, or go

That's my problem. You need to upgrade the cabling to at least
 CAT6. My
reason for purchasing it was to replace a defunct router and
 there was no
reason not to get the DIR-655.

Can you use existing CAT 5 cabling or do you have to upgrade to CAT 6?

I am interested to hear what you find. I have been running
   some really
slick 100vg equipment (totally collision free packet
   transfer), but may need
to migrate to gigabit next year.

All,

I've continued researching the highly recommended
   D-Link DIR 655 (about
$100 US).

My initial concern that this product might have
   problems with 64-bit
OS's (based on comments in NewEgg/Amazon reviews)
   seems to have been
false based on my continued research.

I'm going to give this product a try - I'll
post back if I run into any
problems.

Thanks for everyone's help!

Malcolm
