RE: Programmer's day
Greetings, and Welcome, Petr, from the Upstate New York VFP Geek... [OT] is, as you correctly surmised, for topics that are Off Topic. Stuff that really has less to do with technology and more with rants (imho) g. [NF] is for topics that are technically oriented, but Not FoxPro related. This is where a person may ask for help with a LAN or have an Operating System related matter he/she wants to put forth for consideration. A subject with neither [OT] or [NF] indicates it is a FoxPro related subject. If you prefer to be a member with only [NF] and FoxPro related (no [OT]) you can do so. Although I found [OT] subjects quite amusing and informative, after a while I migrated to the technical only part of the ProFox list. Just a personal preference, and overloading of my InBox g... I am hopeful you will find the info we discuss of value. You can retrieve and review archived info at Leafe.com on FoxPro and other areas of discipline (Linux, Dabo, etc.). RE: [NF] Looking for small network gigabitrouterrecommendation(CLARIFIED)
Why bother with Cat6? Why not go straight to Cat7 and be prepared for the next decade? ;-) -- Ed Leafe Sheee-ittt! There is a Cat7 spec! http://www.connectworld.net/syscon/support.htm 1. What is the difference between CAT-5, CAT-5e, CAT-6, CAT-7... The Simple Answer: CAT-5 is rated to 100M CAT-5e is rated to 350M keep reading below, used for gigabit - Gil CAT-6 and CAT6e is rated to 550M or 1000M depending on your source CAT-7 is supposedly rated to 700M or presumably 1000M Today there is no approved CAT-6 or CAT-7. While some folks are selling products they call Level 6 or 7, there aren't even specs for them, making CAT-5e the best available option. CAT-6 cable is being made with 23 guage conductor wire as opposed to the slightly smaller 24 guage for CAT-5e and also has a separator to handle crosstalk better. Both CAT-5 and CAT-5e have 100 ohm impedance and electrical characteristics supporting transmissions up to 100 MHz. The differences between CAT-5 and CAT-5e show in all aspects of performance: capacitance, frequency, resistance, attenuation, and NEXT. CAT-5e components were designed with high-speed gigabit Ethernet in mind. While CAT-5 components may function to some degree in a gigabit Ethernet, they perform below standard during high-data transfer scenarios. CAT-5e cables work with ATM and gigabit speed products. Simply, if you are using a 100Mbps switch, get CAT-5e cable instead of CAT-5. CAT-5e is formally called ANSI/TIA/EIA 568A-5 or simply Cat-5e (the e stands for 'enhanced'). CAT-5e is completely backward compatible with current CAT-5 equipment. The enhanced electrical performance of CAT-5e ensures that the cable will support applications that require additional bandwidth, such as gigabit Ethernet or analog video. -Original Message- From: [EMAIL PROTECTED] [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Behalf Of Ed Leafe Sent: Saturday, September 13, 2008 12:18 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: [NF] Looking for small network gigabitrouterrecommendation(CLARIFIED) On Sep 13, 2008, at 11:16 AM, Gil Hale wrote: I have always heard Cat5e was adequate for 1,000mps. A little background story to why I bought this router - maybe someone finds it useful... I'm connected to the citys fiber-lan via ethernet.and pays for 100Mb/10Mb downstream/upstream which cost me about 20/30$ a month. Pretty good deal I think. Only problem was I only got about 20Mb/20Mb ie 20% of the promised downstream, but curiously enough about 100% better upstream. I used a Netgear WGT624 router at the time, and after some research checking cabling and the citys switch, founding no faults, I decided to upgrade the routers firmware. The results was about 100% better! I got about 40Mb/36Mb. After research of reviews and such I decided to buy the DIR-655, mostly based on the very high througput on LAN. I don't use the WAN at the moment but I want the speed between computers and backup NAS to be as fast as possible. Guess what - with this router I now get as high speed as 94Mb/72Mb - I'm happy :) Brat! RE: FW: DOG FOOD RECALL - Not On Topic, but important enough to violate that little filter
Gil, I have a dog too but you are wasting tons of bandwidth with these posts, and you know bandwidth is an endangered species. Same on you! ;cP Did I mention how I am using recycled electrons? That is based on an Enron hatched plan years ago to somehow utilize wasted bandwidth during low Internet use for high activity period use bandwidth demand (via their highly proprietary/propiratary PFM technique, Pure F'ing Magic). It worked out so well, along with other fantasy business plans Enron was practicing, that today they are, uh, wait a minute... Never mind. RE: [NF] Looking for small network gigabitrouter recommendation(CLARIFIED)
Number 12 seems to get to the point. 12. Just tell me what cable I need... If you need patch cords up to 25 feet, use CAT-5e stranded cable for ease of flexibility. If you are making linger runs or going through walls or ceilings, I'd go ahead and use the CAT-6 UTP (solid) cables - if that seems a bit expensive, then go with the CAT-5e UTP. In my case I should be using CAT-6 since I have cabling going through walls and floors over lengths of 25 feet. I know at work we've had issues with reps using CAT-5e with their gigabit laptop connections. Once a CAT-6 or CAT-7 cable was put in all the issues went away.
