RE: [OT] Anyone used Mobiforms smartphone rad ?

2013-08-23 Thread Dave Crozier
Graham,
To be honest I don't use the emulator as it is so slow. If you just link a
tablet and enable USB debugging on it then the whole experience is instant with
no delay at all.

The only thing I use the emulator for is to check out that the final app is
visually OK on all sized screens. Other than that is is just about useless.

Dave

Thanks

Is it normal for the emulator to take 25 mins to start up?
Is there any minimum memory or processor specs for this?

PC spec is 2.4ghz with 2gb of ram.

I am starting to work with https://www.syncfusion.com/products/aspnet-mvc

Bought in at a much cheaper amount. :) Also have to work with barcodes and
camera for this app. Has local data and can hook up as soon as wifi is
available which is a big issue for my environments.

... but my emulator starts up in about 45 seconds from a cold start so I think
you have something not quite right.

My spec is HP i5 with 8Gb

RE: [NF] Recommendations for Windows 8 laptop (or MacBook Air?)

2013-08-23 Thread Dave Crozier
Personally I'd get a Retina Macbook pro with 16GB and run Windows 8 as a VM
using VMWare Fusion. I have this setup on a i5 13" Macbook which is now just
over 18 months old and I think that the trackpad on the Mac actually works
better than the touchscreen on any laptop I have ever used. Especially In
native mode, the trackpad is simply a joy to use with all the new multi-finger
gestures and considering I bought it as simply a standby machine, I rarely if
ever use my Dell i7 laptop at all (any buyers .. lol?).

I hate to admit it, and thought I never would, but once you've used a Macbook
then the speed and facilities simply make any standard Windows only laptop look
ordinary. OK, you pay a premium, but it is worth it and the screen resolutions
are far better than any Windows laptop to the stage that I would say using the
13" is a better experience and easier to use than a 15" Windows machine. The
only mistake I made was not getting the 15" one at the outset.

The only future drawback for Mac's seems to be the way Apple are going the way
of not allowing memory upgrades as all the memory is on board. So, I bought the
machine with 4Gb but to run VM's it was in fact unworkable and 16GB allows me
to run 3-4 VM's concurrently with little or no speed degradation. If you buy a
current Macbook air then the memory you start with is what you are stuck with -
so you need to make your choice the right one at the outset.

Oh yes, and I now use native OSX more and more as time goes on... it just
works, is so stable and boots up so quickly ... and it's fun programming it as
well!

I hope not!

I think they can run Windows using remote desktop. If I'm not mistaken,
these have ARM processors, which Microsoft stopped supporting after Windows
NT 3.51.

They can be hacked/jailbroken to run Linux. In fact, I understand that's
what they're doing under the hood for Google OS kernel.

It's been a little while since I used it but there is an option to run
the x86 Android emulator virtualised (i.e. fast).
I think you need to install an additional component.

The problem I had was that it conflicts with Hyper-V (I have Win8
pro). The only option is to uninstall Hyper-V.

It's not a huge problem for me as I have 3 Android devices (Nexus 4,
Nexus 7 & an old ZTE Blade).
Deploying and running an app is pretty quick.

p.s. the Nexus 4 is really nice, and relatively cheap (compared to a
comparable Samsung anyway)

What has he actually done for VFP?

[NF] Overheating laptop - high temperature

2013-08-23 Thread Michael Madigan
When I turned my notebook on today I got a overheating error.  The room was 85
F since I had not turned on the Air Conditioning yet.

As far as I can tell, the specifications for my CPU have a maximum 100 C
rating, with the warning occurring when the CPU reaches 90 C

So I downloaded Speedfan and found out my CPU was running hot, over 80C.   I
configured Speedfan to automatically adjust the fan speed.

After doing that and vacuuming out the vents the computer was under 70 C

I then changed the power settings to lower the max CPU to 50%  and got the
temperature to 55C and lower.

Finally, I decided to run Combofix.   It must have found some things running in
the background because now I have a temperature of 42 C  Of course the room
temperature dropped from 29 C to 25 C too.

If I had to do it all over again, I would try Combofix first.

Mike
