RE: New Year Brain Teaser...

2017-01-09 Thread Dave Crozier
Thanks everyone for your input.

Just as I thought it was just one of those things and re-generating the form
from scratch resulted in the whole thing working.

I hate it when this happens but tracing why is secondary to getting the form
working so I have saved all the non-working system for later analysis.

Subject: New Year Brain Teaser...

Gentlemen,
A bit of a problem here and I don't know what is causing it:

1. The result - a dreaded C5 error from VFP9

2. The scenario:

Non Modal Form with private datasession and one table open in the session... I
want to use a data object to hold data in and then use this object to populate
various controls on the form.

Initially none of the controls have a controlsource property assigned and they
are allocated programmatically at runtime in the init.

The Form has a property added called oData added at design time.

In the init of the form the oData property is assigned i.e.

Select
Scatter name Thisform.oData memo

What I ultimately want to do is the following:
Thisform.txtText1.ControlSource = "Thisform.oData.Field1"
... for each of the form controls etc.

The exit button on the form simply releases the form and should return back to
the development mode but it doesn't - simply throwing a C5 error every time.

I have now got the bones of the problem down to the init of the form and the
click of the exit button and no runtime controlsource setup for the form
controls, and have a simple blank form with no controls on it so they are not
the problem.

I have even tried assigning the oData property at runtime in the init() with:

Thisform.AddProperty("oData", null) immediately before the scatter

...and a lot of other "potential get arounds" all to no avail.

If I leave out the scatter then the form loads and exits no problem but as I
say throws a C5 on form clicking the exit button as soon as it hits the return
after Thisform.release

Ideas please as this is now driving me potty!

Dave

He will be missed by many her and it really does make one think about enjoying
every day as it comes, no matter what or how you feel. My skirmish with near
death a couple of years ago (double pulmonary embolism) taught me that lesson

Certainly makes one aware of your own mortality though and the fact that we all
have a lifecycle length.

Condolences from here in the UK and the group in general. I will miss our out

Re: Malware in Fox2Bin on VFPX CodePlex

2017-01-09 Thread Ted Roche
I was able to download the file at the time and confirm there was no
malware embedded.

I just got a response from the vendor/MSFT temp following up on my
support request that they've reviewed the contents and there was never
malware included; they seem to have made some changes to the download
process, so I no longer get a malware warning downloading the
identical file.

False positives are a lot better than the reverse :)

Maybe.

If you have the SQL files on the same machine, or on a Windows share
accessible from that machine (explicitly NOT a best practice for data
server files), then any files found could be encrypted by ransomware.

Best setup for SQL Server would be not a Windows Share but instead via

Mike,

If the RDBMS opens and locks the file for a longer period of time than the
VFP tables do, then yes.

They're definitely subject to ransomware crap like cryptlocker and locky
because they live in and are under control of the file system. OTOH I'm sure
some clever a** is working on a way to use SQL APIs to encrypt that data,
too.

To the best of my knowledge, the physical files that make up an MS SQL DB are
locked by the database engine. Having said that, if the bad guys decide it's
worth the effort they will figure out a way to get to them. Most ransomware
that I've had some experience with go for low hanging fruit; all those office
docs and jpgs, etc that live out on the network, of which the vast majority
will not be locked at any given time. But I also think I've recently read about
some new variants that encrypt entire volumes...

RE: VFP tables likely victims for ransomware?

2017-01-09 Thread Rick Schummer
Absolutely since something like SQL Server typically has the data files open
all the time (even when the apps that use
the data are shut down). However, SQL Server Express apps that have the data
locally or in a peer-to-peer setup (which
is not all that uncommon for a vertical market application) often have the
files available to be encrypted if the SQL
Server service is shut down for whatever reason. Just not common.

Unfortunately, VFP apps with VFP data open and close tables as needed and
definitely close them when they are shut down.
I've seen it many times where some tables are good and some are encrypted
because the user was only opening some of them
in the course of using the app.

But VFP data is not the only problem, what about something as simple as an INI
file, or more likely, Word/Excel docs
that are automated, graphic images, and historical PDF reports.

Restoring is only one part of it. You have to consider all the time it takes
being down while restores are happening,
and the cost of the IT people to get things back to normal. And rebuilding the
machine where it was originally opened.
I've seen so much time and money lost by people who are tricked into installing
ransomware, it is not funny. I wish a
couple of them would be tossed in jail and fined to the highest limit to make a
point that they can be caught. They are
geniuses that we probably would not want to compete with in the software
marketplace so it is unlikely.

Easiest way to solve it is to not open stuff that you have no business opening
(although they are remarkably
engineered), and do religious backups of your data. A lot of companies do not
allow attachments.

Ransomware is probably the number one reason we get new subscriptions to
CleverFox Backup these days. People get hit,
find giant hole in their disaster recovery plan, and then get on with solid,
scheduled offsite backups.

Sql Server raw data is safe because the API had an active lock on all the
files. Even the .bin files that make up the service.

SQL Express should do the same thing.
