Bam! Everything just happens. I didn’t have to pick out a server
configuration, a data plan, a firewall, anti-virus - none of that crap
that is just a pain in the ass to keep up with.
In fact - I didn’t even have to decide if I wanted to run Windows or
Linux — because I can make that decision for each domain I add. I am
NOT bullshitting you! I “bought” one server. I created two domains.
One runs LAMP and the other runs Windows Server. Really!

I can create another domain and run Ruby on Rails. I can run a domain
on Windows with MySQL or MSSQL. I can run Linux with Ruby on Rails, or
Linux with PHP/MySQL, etc. One box. One price. One login. One thing to
manage. Very sweet!

BTW, Mosso is a Rackspace company.

Mosso was a spin-off, iirc, run by the same people but affiliated and
not a subsidiary or division, last I checked.

I had a very bad experience with Mosso last year. A web hosting
company I'm affiliated with moved dozens of their clients onto Mosso ,
only to find email service falling apart and little support available.
This lasted weeks. Clients who aren't getting their email in a timely
manner (like, 48 hours late) can be a very unpleasant crowd to deal
wtih.

There are a lot of hosting companies that offer pretty slick instant
setup. The trick is whether they can maintain those services through
the daily challenges of outages, router troubles, DDOSes and so forth.

Every hosting company goes through phases. I hope Mosso's gotten over
their growing pains.

I think they were separate at one point, but they are certainly a
part of Rackspace now.

I don't know much about the business model of Mosso, but I do know
that it does compete in a different space as Rackspace in general,
which focuses on customer support for IT outsourced services. Mosso
requires a higher level of expertise of its customers than Rackspace,
and thus is much less expensive.

Please keep us updated on how it works out for you, as their feature
set was excellent, but they were not (yet) up to the level of service
they needed. If it has gone back under the Rackspace fold, it's
possible they've resolved those issues, which would be great to hear.
We need more high-quality options for hosting!

I'm not using Mosso, as they are trying to figure out what they will
be offering employees, since what was workable when there were a
couple of hundred folks is not workable when there are a few thousand.

If I get a chance to try moving my site off my local box, I'll be
sure to let everyone know!

Doh. I get it. You were quoting from someone else's posts. It's right
there in the OP. My bad. I missed that.
