Al,

I'm still not convinced about the speed of it though. I think my 2Bb of

Hi foxgang
Just tried out Vista ultimate on my Acer laptop. So much for VFP running on
it though.
VFP5 comes up with cant start application yet works
VFP7 is ok
VFP7 moans about MSXML4 and the task manager does not work.
All good stuff so it looks like back to XP for me

RE: FoxPro on Vista

2007-01-16 Thread Dave Crozier
Adam,
It may well sound like it but in development mode with a couple of VFP
sessions and 3 VFP on line programs, Outlook, Messenger and a few other apps
I've used up nearly 1Gb as opposed to XP equivalent which normally runs at
about 400Kb-500Kb.

All the blurb from M$ seems to say it runs faster, and when there is lots of
free memory this is true, but adding multiple apps and decreasing available
memory below 512Kb makes it run like a dog.

Haven't found out how to cap memory for an application yet as this may well
help, but I'm looking!

Rumor had it that you'd need a lot more horsepower (read: RAM) under the

I use Ed's SetMemory between Data Translation processes (very intense
translations) just to make certain each process is best prepared to use my
PC RAM most efficiently. Before using SetMemory I would get c005 errors
every once in a while between processes (VFP7. After implementing SetMemory
I never got c005 errors again. Another wonderful gift to the VFP

It's really funny that Microsoft is claiming better speed for Vista ...
they are the ones who "stole" the speed to begin with.

If you want fast buy fast hardware and lots of it. I just built a
machine with an Intel E6700 dual core, separate 10K RPM system and page
disks (max page file size), 1TB of Raid0, some NVidia board with 256 Mb,
and 2GB (or Bb if you don't like metric prefixes) of DDR 800 Ram. If
this machine were any faster, it would be clairvoyant. Oh yes, running
XP SP2 with most of the "pretty" stuff turned off.

I was in a hurry, so I overpaid on everything and did not make all the right
choices.

Right now, the total is about $2700 and that includes the case, extra fans,
power supply, 2 DVD recorders, the motherboard, and 8.625% NY sales tax.

I bought everything from MicroCenter and CompUSA over-the-counter. I figure
that if I had purchased everything from Newegg, I could have saved about $800
total.

I also did a really stupid thing by trying to save $50 and getting an open-box
mobo. It was a dud and had to be exchanged. So it cost me the extra $50 plus
the wasted time trying to fix the bad board, exchanging, and rebuilding.

I can get about $200 back on rebates, theoretically (I have to acquire another
residence under a different name in a different country because the Western
Digital rebate is limited to one per DNA sequence.)

I think as far as vfp9 is concerned it must be the lack of msxml4 on the
computer. Which I would have expected to be installed by vfp9. so its not
very good for vfp9 and vista so far.
Not sure what to make of vfp5a.
So I cannot recommend Vista for FoxPro dev. It runs ok with exe's though.

RE: FoxPro on Vista

2007-01-17 Thread Allen
For information.
VFP9 required msxml4 to run the task screen. The parser is on Microsoft's
web site and it does resolve my issue (so far) with VFP9 on Vista.
Still no clues on VFP5a which I still need at the moment. I get an error
"Error initializing Application object". I don’t know what object as VFP5a
and my app work fine.
There is the help file problem though. It says get the developer to update
the help file to chm. What do you think the chances are of a VFP5a help file
that works on Vista. :)

Now another gripe. I use the windows cryptology service and the crypt class.
Vista reports the service is not available. Currently I use Microsoft
enhanced cryptographic provider v1.0
Anyone know what to use in Vista ?

Hi Michael,

Cipher50 is simple encryption that's easy to break.

Craig's encryption FLL supports major industry encryption standards
(AES, Blowfish, RC4) in stream and block formats with support for
various levels of encryption (128 bit +). There are easy to use
functions for encrypting/decrypting strings and files.

Craig has also included support for generating hashes (SHA, MD5, and
RIPE formats).

FWIW, I get a *ton* of spam from 1and1, as well as a lot of bot
requests for accounts on OpenTech. Doesn't surprise me that this is
coming back to bite them.

Hello Paul
Its not the first time either. I have a lot of problems with them using

Seriously, a big thank you to Ed and this list would certainly be

I am with ehosting (who lost their connections yesterday for an hour due
to a power cut on the floor above their servers! [they aren't very amused]).

1and1 aren't on the floor above eHosting are they? ;)

I dumped 1and1 a couple of years ago because I thought their whole
service was shakey. My best experience is with FASTHOSTS or Energis
(that is now a division of C&W) but the latter is very pricey.

I was with fasthosts but had loads of problems with them. 1and 1 do have
some good add-ons including multiple domains but this email problem which
still persists is wearing a bit thin.
When I move I may try my own hosting on ADSL. I don’t have much traffic but
I would like to get it :)
