And vice versa

System, Administration, Services from the menu (or sudo
system-config-services for command-line types) will bring up a dialog
that controls what services run on startup. Find ntp, check the

One nm is one minute of arc in latitude. In longitude it is minutes * cos
latitude. The time error in astro-navigation shows up in the definition of
the body's sub-point on the earth.

RE: [NF] Dimension 4

2007-04-11 Thread John Weller
It depends on your latitude as the error is one degree of longitude for 4
minutes of time. In UK that would be about 8 nautical miles, say 9.5
statute miles, for 1 minute of time.

The other aspect of time however would be for a rendezvous with another
aircraft when both are travelling at 8 nm per minute. I was on a SAC
bombing competition where we had to rendezvous above cloud with a Tornado
who popped up through the cloud and expected to find us at exactly the right
position and heading at the designated time in order to take on fuel and
then return to low level - interesting challenge!

ps lists the processes that are running. 'ax' are flags, modifiers to
what ps displays. You can issue 'man ps' at the command line to find
out what they mean. Grep is a command to search through the output it
is handed (the | called 'pipe' redirects the output of ps into the
input of grep). 'man grep' will tell you more about that, although
there are entire books on the 'regular expressions' (search patterns)
grep is capable of using, you can usually just put what you're looking
for after the grep command. In this case I was looking for the daemon
(server) of the network time protocol, cleverly called ntpd.

Getting ntpd started and configuring it to start on system startup can
be done in a bunch of ways. Which distribution are you running -
RedHat, SuSE, Debian, Ubuntu?

Typically time synchronization is done via the NTP protocol. Linux
uses this typically, but so does Windows XP-- the 'internet time' tab
on the clock that was added in XP does this-- older versions of
Windows required you to use the net time /setsntp command or hack the
registry... No need for extra software...
