yeah, you can, but i pretty much live in the track list table and use the
Shift+a shortcut a lot to arm or unarm tracks. So its quick to unarm, move to
the next and arm.

Most avid dealers will also sell you a PT 11 upgrade from 10. It's basically
a postcard with a registration code on it. You log into your avid account, put
in the registration code and it will grant you access to a PT 11 download and a
new license for your iLok.

its mostly bug fixes, Though you do need to be running the latest version of
Pro TOols 10 if you plan to have Pro Tools 11 and Pro TOols 10 living happily
on the same system.

Whenever you upgrade to a later version of Pro TOols 10, you will have to go
into Macintosh HD/Library/Application Support/Avid/Plugins and remove the
folder with aax plug ins init. This will force Pro TOols to fall back to RTAS.

That's why i never use playlist. It would slow me down too much to have to
to go cycle through them in that manner. can create 5 new tracks at once and
cycle through rename as we do a take all quickly in the edit window and if
they aren't adjacent or contiguous item chooser can be useful. I keep notes
and comp the takes down to one track before mix time so i don't end up with
too many tracks then.

Firstly, chances are, the audio you lost will be in the Audio Files
folder.

Secondly, control \ (or whatever that key is in the crook of the
enter

key), will make a new playlist, and control command \ (same key), makes a
duplicate of the new playlist.

Be mindful though, that if you make more than 5 or so playlists, the
oldest ones seem to disappear, and I'm not entirely sure why. I don't
usually make that many takes though, so I didn't bother looking into it.

I'm not sure if there's a shortcut for moving between playlists.

Hi all,

I know this is veering slightly off-topic for this list but I'll ask this
anyway. Feel free to respond off-list.

I am trying to create a Lion partition for the installation of PT10. This
is going onto a 27" iMac which has 1 SSD running Mountain Lion, and another
totally blank (though formatted of course) 2TB Hd. In a nutshell: I've
followed instructions to complete the installation; namely:

1. downloaded the Lion installer;
2. extracted the appropriate DMG from the package contents/Shared Items
folder;

3.  Launched Disk Utility;
4. Set things up so that the extracted DMG should (in theory) restore to the
2TB Hd.

Re: Lost a track in a paid session yesterday

2013-10-01 Thread Scott Chesworth
Ooh la la, I didn't know that keystroke existed to create new and
duplicate playlists. Cool!

Does anyone know whether there are keystrokes to cycle through
playlists on the selected track? At the moment, I do this by going to
the edit window, interacting with the track and popping the playlist
selector menu, so a keystroke would save untold amounts of button
bashing here.

Cheers

You should be good to go. You will need to do a couple things with your
native protools plugins in order to get them to be accessible by PT, but
you
can cross that bridge when you get there. Are you new to recording,

Hey John Scott is correct certain edit fields are not being reported

Avid and Apple are aware of this and they are currently working to

it.
They are saying in a few months it will be fixed and released in an 11.

Creating Lion partition

2013-10-01 Thread Dónal Fitzpatrick
Hi all,

I know this is veering slightly off-topic for this list but I'll ask this
anyway. Feel free to respond off-list.

I am trying to create a Lion partition for the installation of PT10. This is
going onto a 27" iMac which has 1 SSD running Mountain Lion, and another
totally blank (though formatted of course) 2TB Hd. In a nutshell: I've
followed instructions to complete the installation; namely:
1. downloaded the Lion installer;
2. extracted the appropriate DMG from the package contents/Shared Items folder;
3.  Launched Disk Utility;
4. Set things up so that the extracted DMG should (in theory) restore to the
2TB Hd.

However I get an error saying that the disk cannot be unmounted because it's in
use. It isn't being used by any applications I'm running. Anyone any
thoughts? Looking at the list archives I see others have had similar issues
which is the only reason I chose to post here on this topic; I just didn't see
their solutions.

Just new to Pro Tools however it seems in other programs such as CakeWalk

I am sure more questions will be asked but having the program up and

You should be good to go. You will need to do a couple things with your
native protools plugins in order to get them to be accessible by PT, but
you
can cross that bridge when you get there. Are you new to recording, or just
new to recording on your own with protools?

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I did have Lion on my iMac early 2008, and have an external FireWire 800

Again thanks and very nice to be on the list. John

Be warned or you will be facing alot of frustration, try to find a way to
have lion on that machine. In some cases Lion won't even load on some older

Hey John Scott is correct certain edit fields are not being reported
by voiceover, and it makes working in MountainLion almost impossible.
Avid and Apple are aware of this and they are currently working to resolve
it.
They are saying in a few months it will be fixed and released in an 11.

Firstly, chances are, the audio you lost will be in the Audio Files
folder.

Secondly, control \ (or whatever that key is in the crook of the enter
key), will make a new playlist, and control command \ (same key), makes a
duplicate of the new playlist.

Be mindful though, that if you make more than 5 or so playlists, the
oldest ones seem to disappear, and I'm not entirely sure why. I don't usually
make that many takes though, so I didn't bother looking into it.

I'm not sure if there's a shortcut for moving between playlists.

  Hi Poppa,

Look in your "Session File Backups folder" in your session folder for that
session you spoke about.
theres probably 20 or 30 saves that were automatically generated just sitting
there.
  Heres my method for tracking;;
"only have the tracks your recording showing"!
This keeps you out of hot water! :)
I also save as and rename every big step of the project like my first
session would be m1 then vocal tracking would be m2 then m3 then m4 and so on.
At any point in the project I could go back to m1 or m2 or m3 of the pt
sessions that I chose " Save as" and and grab what got misplaced by "importing
session data"

Re: Lost a track in a paid session yesterday

2013-10-01 Thread matt diemert
Poppaa,
Playlist is absolutely the way to go here. I never get rid of a take
unless it's a partial take, meaning we knew part way in there was
problems. I have found a couple of things, if you lay your projects
out the same way every time it's a lot easier to quickly navigate from
point a to point b. An example, and while many may not like this
approach it's worked for me. I always lay the ryth section of my
project far left, meaning it's the first tracks I creat. Then drums
and bass are in the middle, lastly, vocals, harmonies aux tracks are
near the end.
When tracking vocals, I always create a playlist, called vox whoever's
singing T1. Then once the take is complete, I instantly name my next
take. I personally keep notes as to which takes as well as at what
marker have parts I prefer. this way if I do decide to comp, I can
quickly go back to say, t3, chorus 2 which maybe at marker 4. This
saves lots of time when working with various vocal tracks. I do the
same with guitar parts or piano parts as well.
I believe by default PT will auto save every 5 minutes, so there's a
good chance you still have that track in a backup file with in your
sessions folder.

Lost a track in a paid session yesterday

2013-10-01 Thread Poppa Bear
Hey folks, I had a pretty good 3 hour session yesterday, but at some point I
went to clear a track, but accidently had two tracks selected so I lost a good
vocal take and didn't notice it in time to just do a typical undo function. How
would I start thinking about how to retreve tracks back in situations like
this? In Sonar there is a history of changes to go into in order to undo stuff
like this even if you have made other changes. I have not got into the play
list stuff much, but I am wondering if it is the direction I need to start
heading in. In my sessions it is normaly good take or bad take and we just keep
it, or redue it, most clients I have had haven't cared about tying peaces of
good takes together to get the best of all the takes, but I would still like to
get a better handle on this so I can block up that chink in my armor.
Thanks all over for any thoughts

Re: New user questions

2013-10-01 Thread Poppa Bear
You should be good to go. You will need to do a couple things with your
native protools plugins in order to get them to be accessible by PT, but you
can cross that bridge when you get there. Are you new to recording, or just
new to recording on your own with protools?

Hello,

Thanks for all the suggestions.

I did have Lion on my iMac early 2008, and have an external FireWire 800
drive I'll install lion.

Again thanks and very nice to be on the list. John

Be warned or you will be facing alot of frustration, try to find a way to
have lion on that machine. In some cases Lion won't even load on some older
machines from what I remember so do your research and assume nothing.

Hey John Scott is correct certain edit fields are not being reported
by voiceover, and it makes working in MountainLion almost impossible.
Avid and Apple are aware of this and they are currently working to resolve
it.
They are saying in a few months it will be fixed and released in an 11.
Build…

Hey John,

The first thing you might want to consider is either rolling back to
or setting up Lion on a separate partition. There is a bug that breaks
VoiceOver's ability to read the counter display and edit fields within
Pro Tools when you run it in Mountain Lion.

Sorry to be the barer of bad news...

More questions later but this should do it for now.
