[Python-modules-team] Bug#780408: Refreshed patches

2015-05-21 Thread Julien Puydt

Hi,

here is a tarball with refreshed patches ; I removed
pygments2.0_compatibility.patch and packaged-js.patch because they
seemed obsolete.

I just played with quilt and vi until I had a clean stack : I'm now
going to check if I can get things further.

Dear Maintainer,

your package either build-depends or depends on the python-support
package, or uses dh_pysupport in debian/rules file.

python-support has been deprecated for some time, and any package
still using it should be migrated to dh_python2 and dh_python3.
Instructions on how to migrate packages to dh_python2/dh_python3 can
be found on the Debian wiki [0]. An overview of the anatomy of a
package using the pybuild and dh_python{2,3} helpers can be found in
the Python Module Style Guide [1].

Please test your package thoroughly to make sure the transition to
dh_python2/dh_python3 is done correctly and does not cause a negative
impact on your package. In particular, please test upgrades from the
current jessie and stretch/sid versions of the package.

If your package does not yet use Python 3, please consider adding
Python 3 support to your package at the same time as updating the
build system; the py3k porters can offer assistance with that [2].

Thanks!

As a general rule, you can either have a stable system, or an up-to-date
system, not both.

There might be another way however - I believe python-virtualenv is for
Python2.7 - so if you are willing to put everything in a virtualenv, it
will come with a version of pip that works with Python2.7.

[Python-modules-team] Bug#786440: python-pip: pip is out-of-date, 'pip list' fails sometimes

2015-05-21 Thread Donald Stufft
I know that Barry is working on this, pip introduced several new dependencies
in 6.x that he had to package and get added to the archive before he could get
pip updated.

[Python-modules-team] Bug#786440: python-pip: pip is out-of-date, 'pip list' fails sometimes

2015-05-21 Thread Brian Warner
Package: python-pip
Version: 1.5.6-5
Severity: important

I noticed that 'pip list' on my sid system failed, with a rather obscure
error:

Traceback (most recent call last):
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pip/basecommand.py", line 122, in main
status = self.run(options, args)
File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pip/commands/list.py", line 80, in run

if dist_is_editable(dist):
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pip/util.py", line 367, in
dist_is_editable
req = FrozenRequirement.from_dist(dist, [])
  File "/usr/lib/python2.7/dist-packages/pip/__init__.py", line 299, in
from_dist
assert len(specs) == 1 and specs[0][0] == '=='
AssertionError

After some digging, it turned out that the problem was that I have the
'python-pyhsm' package installed, which has a version string of "1.0.4k",
and the extra "k" causes pkg_resources to return a "spec" that looks like
"=== 1.0.4k" (with three equal signs, not two), triggering the assert. Most
packages have a "normalized" version string, for which pkg_resources emits
a spec like "== 1.0.0", which doesn't cause pip to complain.

This was fixed in pip-6.0, which tolerates both == and ===. Sid currently
has a pkg_resources that can emit ===, but not a pip that can tolerate it.
This only shows up if you happen to have at least one python package
installed with a non-normalized version string. For me, I was able to make
pip work again by uninstalling python-pyhsm.

I'm sure you're aware that sid's pip-1.5.6 is pretty out-of-date, and that
6.1.1 is the current version (https://pip.pypa.io/en/stable/news.html).
It's not a trivial upgrade, for sure, but consider this note as supporting
evidence in the campaign to get pip updated :).

cheers,
 -Brian

Steps To Reproduce:
 apt-get install python-pip python-pyhsm
 pip list
Expected:
 a list of packages
Got Instead:
part of the list, then an exception with an AssertionError

cheers,
 -Brian

2015-05-21 Thread Julien Puydt

Hi,

I have sent RFS mails to the debian-python mailing-list on tornado and
mistune, so those should cover all deps for ipython 3.1.0.

Re: [Python-modules-team] python-pip

2015-05-21 Thread Joseph
Hi,

I'm currently writing a doc about how to install a soft of mine, and "pip"
is required to install some modules.

I cannot ask all people using my soft to "upgrade to Jessie". This is
asking too much to my future users.

There surely may be a simple way to install "python-pip" without having
"apt-get install python-pip" installing Python2.6 on top of 2.7, don't you
think so?

Thank you in advance.

I suspect you will need to upgrade to Jessie for this to work, the version
in wheezy looks like it is based on Python2.6

Here is a instructions I found, not tried it myself though, and I can't see
a date on the article:
