2019-08-14 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
"Requests for free or reduced prices tickets were made via the financial
assistance programme which closed for applications shortly after the CfP."

My 2 cents: I see an issue here. A person will likely decide to attend or
not also depending if their talk/paper/poster is accepted or not. If you
close the financial aid right after the closure of CfP, people won't make
it in time to request it. Is this intentional?

[python-uk] PyCon X Italy: Call for Proposals (deadline Jan 6th)

2019-01-02 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hi everyone!

Next PyCon Italy will take place, as usual, in Florence on May 2nd /
5th. The CfP is still open and we would be glad to receive more
submission.

There will be multiple tracks dedicated to Community, Django, PyData
etc... so there is plenty of choice about the subject.

Most of the talks will be in english language, so we of course accept
submissions in english and you will be able to enjoy most of the
conference even if you don't speak Italian.

I don't want to copy-paste here all the information, but you can find
all the details at this page
https://www.pycon.it/en/call-for-proposals/

If you have any specific question, you can ask me or contact the other
organisers https://www.pycon.it/en/contacts/

We are really looking forward to receive your submissions and I
personally wish you an Happy new Year!

[python-uk] Exercism.io needs Python mentors

2018-11-03 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hello folks!

Exercism.io ( https://exercism.io ) is a platform designed to help
people improve their coding skills through practice and mentorship.

Recently it re-launched with a new mentoring feature. All the students
there are guaranteed to receive feedback from a mentor. This greatly
helps students with learning many languages, including Python.

Python is well-represented on Exercism when it comes to student
interest. (Un)fortunately, it is disproportionately more popular to
learn Python than to teach it, thus we are asking for your help!

If you would want to help a bunch of enthusiastic learners improve
their Python skill, go to https://mentoring.exercism.io for details.

There are actually many languages on Exercism that could use
additional mentors. If you are not comfortable mentoring Python, it
would be possible to mentor another language.

If you need more encouragement, someone wrote a blog post about what
they personally enjoyed about being a mentor:
https://angelika.me/2018/08/12/5-reasons-to-become-a-mentor-on-exercism/

Thank you so much, cheers

[python-uk] Farewell, relocating to Italy and looking for a remote job

2018-09-29 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
from greetings import farewell

Good morning folks!

I don't want to bother you with many details, but for family reasons
(I can't confirm nor deny it has anything to do with what may happen
in March 2019), me and my wife will relocate to Italy (where she just
got an amazing training job as Geriatric specialisation doctor).

I'm planning to stay in London no later than March and I hope to be
able to catch up with those of you that I know in person, before I
definitely leave.

I met a good number of amazing people during my time in UK. I can't
probably mention everyone, but I will at least mention those I did
learn a lot from (I hope I didn't forget anyone!).

Nicholas, Ravi, Daniel Pope, Harry Percival, Tim Golden, Daniele
Procida: it's been a pleasure to meet you at Python Dojo and PyCon UK!

Work wise, I'm still enjoying my job at GDS (they are of course aware
of my situation), but since I won't be able to bring this job with me
in Italy, I really would like to find a remote job which I can start
here and continue from there once I will have moved.

If you are aware of any company hiring remote Python/Django (I'm also
learning Go, just don't expect me to be fluent as much as I'm with
Python) backend developers, I would be glad to know.

I'm sure we will be able to stay in touch through the mailing list or
on Twitter, I just won't be able to attend your local meetups.

farewell("folks!")

companies directly posting a job or developers looking for one, not to
agencies trying to get developers for their clients.

[python-uk] Python/Django contractor for Government Digital Service

2017-02-13 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hi everyone!

GDS (Government Digital Service) is looking for a Python/Django
developer to join my team (Better Use of Data) and help us to build a
tool that will help government find land for various purposes, based
on factors such as location, infrastructure and local amenities. The
role is based in London, and is 100% on-site.

We are looking for a contractor to join us for 3 months (with the
possibility of extension) with the following skills:

- Full stack developer (with a good understanding of front end side in
particular)
- Python
- Django (the full stack of Django) and Django Rest Framework
- HTML, CSS, JavaScript (no particular framework like Angular or React
is required, but at least JQuery/Ajax are required)
- PostgreSQL / PostGIS

The application architecture is composed mainly of API backend written
in Django / Django Rest Framework, some complementary API services and
a Django front end.

Not convinced yet? Do you want to have a look at the current source
code? No problem! Here you can find the current projects:

- https://github.com/alphagov/land-availability-voa

If you are interested, you can contact me in private at this address
andrea.gra...@digital.cabinet-office.gov.uk (Please, no recruitment
agencies! Thanks!)

[python-uk] Python/Django backend developer looking for the next challenge in London

2016-09-29 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hi!

Some of you already know me (from Python Dojo, PyCon etc...), for
everyone else I introduce myself.

My name is Andrea Grandi and I've been working as Python/Django
backend developer for the last 4 years of my career. I'm now looking
for my next challenge.

If your company is hiring and it's in London, you can have a look at
my CV here https://www.andreagrandi.it/curriculum/

I don't mean to be picky, but location is an important factor for me
as I currently commute from Ashford (Kent) and I will have to live
here for the next 9-10 months. I currently commute to Paddington and
it's perfectly fine (just as an example).

Also, I have a strong preference for backend only roles. My main skill
is Python (with experience of Django, Django Rest Framework and
Flask), but I wouldn't mind to pick/learn additional languages like
(in order of preference) Go or Rust. If I had to be full stack, my
perfect combination would be Python for the backend and iOS/Swift
(which I'm currently learning) for mobile development.

Last but not least: I'm not considering to work with any recruiter (of
course I'm not talking about internal recruiters) at the moment.
Please do not contact me if you work for an external recruitment
agency, thanks!

For any question, please contact me privately, thanks.

Cheers

[python-uk] Anyone keen to share a room in Cardiff on Sep 15, 16, 17 for PyCon UK?

2016-08-12 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hi everyone,

I'm going to attend PyCon UK and I'm trying to book a room for the
three nights 15th, 16th and 17th September.

It looks like most of the hotels only have double/twin rooms and the
deal we have with them (see http://2016.pyconuk.org/accommodation/ )
is for this combination.

Is anyone keen to share a room with me?

Please reply in private and I will get back to you as soon as possible.

Hi everyone!

Where can I find the source code of the small apps that were produced
yesterday? I'm interested in particular in those that were using the
accelerometer. Thanks :)

Hi,

I contacted them (i...@python-fosdem.org) on November 28th and still
no reply from them.

That's why I tried to ask here as well. I've now tried on Twitter too,
but time is really running out and I don't think we will be able to do
anything at this point let's wait and see.

Cheers.

Let's chat about this later (at Dojo).

[python-uk] FOSDEM 2016

2015-12-01 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hi everyone,

is anyone of you attending FOSDEM this year? I've already booked
flights+hotel and I'm going with some friends of mine, but it would be
nice to know in advance if anyone from the Python community is
attending as well so we can catch up all together :)

I'm also trying to contact someone that is organizing the Python dev
room. I've only this website as reference http://python-fosdem.org/
and for example I would be interested in giving a ligthing talk but
this format is not mentioned at all in the call for paper page.

Do you know who can I ask to get more informations and maybe organize
the lightning talks sessions together?

Cheers

[python-uk] Django Rest Book: a collaborative book about Django Rest Framework

2015-07-25 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hello!

I would like to announce an idea I had in the past weeks (no, I'm not
announcing a ready book, please keep reading :P ): a book about Django
Rest Framework!

Directly from the README:

The idea of writing a book about Django Rest Framework comes from my
(Andrea Grandi) daily usage of this fantastic library. The framework
itself has a very good documentation but sometimes it can be not
enough, expecially for people that have just started working with it.

I don't define myself a Django Rest Framework expert despite having
used it for the latest 2 years and very often I need to look at the
documentation. This is why I would like to make this a collaborative
work: I have surely the willing but not all the required experience.

Surely at the end of this adventure I (and everyone who will
contribute) will have a wider knowledge of the framework, but still
the book will need the help of more people expecially in areas where
an expert of internals is required or even just to review how it has
been written (disclaimer: I'm not a native english speaker, so expect
some errors in the text).

Who would like to help me in this adventure :) ?

The url of the project is here: https://github.com/djangorestbook/djangorestbook

NOTE: I've no plans to make this a commercial product/book and all the
material will be released with the Creative Common license. When the
book will be ready, if we will be able to find a publisher maybe we
will put a small price on the final book, just to cover the
publishing/printing expenses, but for now publishing (as in paper or
through an official channel) is not something that I'm planning to do.

p.s: please be kind with your feedback about this idea, because what I
want to do is just to create something that will help many people to
have a better understanding of this fantastic library that is Django
Rest Framework.

[python-uk] PyGame Zero: I tried to install but I failed :/

2015-06-06 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hi,

after the amazing evening at last Python Dojo, I decided to try to use
PyGame Zero by myself, but I wasn't able to install it :/

I tried on a Mac (OSX Yosemite). I first installed Python 3 using brew
(I normally use Python 2.7) and I created a venv with this command:

mkvirtualenv -p /usr/local/bin/python3.4 pgz
Running virtualenv with interpreter /usr/local/bin/python3.4
Using base prefix
'/usr/local/Cellar/python3/3.4.3/Frameworks/Python.framework/Versions/3.4'
New python executable in pgz/bin/python3.4
Also creating executable in pgz/bin/python
Installing setuptools, pip, wheel...done.
(pgz)➜ ~

until here... everything ok.

When I try to install pygame zero from pip I get this error:

(pgz)➜ ~ pip3 install pgzero
DEPRECATION: --download-cache has been deprecated and will be removed
in the future. Pip now automatically uses and configures its cache.
Collecting pgzero
  Downloading pgzero-1.0.2.tar.gz (326kB)
100% || 327kB 955kB/s
Collecting pygame>=1.9 (from pgzero)
Could not find a version that satisfies the requirement pygame>=1.9
(from pgzero) (from versions: )
Some externally hosted files were ignored as access to them may be
unreliable (use --allow-external pygame to allow).
No matching distribution found for pygame>=1.9 (from pgzero)

even using pip instead of pip3 doesn't help.

I'm pretty sure I'm doing something wrong but I'm not able to figure
out what. Has anyone any idea about what's wrong with my setup?

Thank you so much for your help!

Cheers.

This could be an interesting subject for one of the next Python Dojo,
what do you think about?
Something similar to the RaspberryPi theme we did last month.

Cheers.

It's very interesting and I really would like to attend, but I've tried
in the past to attent other hackatons and I really can't work all those
hours in a row with no rest. I don't want to come, join a team and risk to
leave the team in the middle of the project because I can't keep working on
it.

Am I the only one with this problem? Is it possible to attend the event
without being in a team, just hacking on something without any delivery on
time constraint?

Cheers.

[python-uk] Python Dojo - Factoryboy talk: any feedback?

2014-03-07 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hi,

to the people who were yesterday at London Python Dojo, I have a
little favour to ask.
I'm Andrea, the guy who gave the lightning talk about "Factoryboy".

I would really apreciate some constructive feedback (positive or
negative) from the people who assisted so I will be able to improve it
for the next time (that actually will be on March 11th at DJUGL).

Please take in consideration that:

- I'm quite new to Django (I started using it about 1 year ago)
- my english still su*** a little, trying hard to improve it.
- my intention is to give my little contribution to the amazing Python community

So I have some very quick questions:

- how was, in general, the talk?
- was it too easy/boring stuff or did you find it interesting?
- most important: was I able to explain the concepts in a clear way?

Thank you so much in advance for all the feedback and the advices you
will give me.

Cheers.

[python-uk] Python/Django lightning talk in London: is anyone interested?

2014-01-24 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
Hi,

a very quick introduction for anyone who doesn't know me already: my name
is Andrea, I'm a Python/Django developer and I moved to London less than 1
year ago.

I usually attend Python-Dojo monthly and other events organized by DJUGL
and I was wondering if anyone would be interested in organizing a monthly
"ligthing talk" evening in London.

I'm writing this email to understand if there is enough interest, where we
could host it and who we could ask to give these talks.

I can volunteer for a couple of talks and with the organization of the
event, I just hope to be at a good level for the audience that will attend
this.

What do you think about?

Please let me have your feedback :)

Cheers.

Re: [python-uk] Robots from the Dojo

2013-12-09 Thread a.gra...@gmail.com
The site is not just "down", it's been shut down:

Well, that was a fun journey, but my role in it ends here. Due to
server costs of both money and time, I've decided to pass on the
project to anyone who wants to take it up. The source code for the
server can be found here:

http://robotgame.org/static/robot.tar.gz

The game was always open-sourced anyway (/brandonhsiao/rgkit on
Github), so if you want to build your own server, that's cool too.
You'll probably do a better job than I did.

That was a fun month of my life, but I've decided to move on to other
projects. The IRC channel is now down, of course, but you can still
find robot gamers at /r/robotgame.

Thanks in particular to everyone who hung out in the IRC channel for
making the experience far more fun than I had expected.

Not interested directly but I have a couple of friends (junior devs)
looking for a job and looking to relocate here in London.
Do you have some more details about the open positions so I can

Now you got it correctly :)

Let's wait also for opposite opinions.
We need to understand if there are opposite opinions and what are
their resons, so we can maybe find a common agreement.

I was offered to take the keyboard (we were in the same team if I'm
not wrong) and do some coding but I refused because I was both too
tired and because I felt I was not at the proper level to code that
problem.

wrong assumpion :P

If I'm in a team where other people are way more expert than me, I
will never want to take the keyboard and start coding something.
I think they would be bored by my slowness and by my level. My slow
speed in coding could affect also the whole result (considering also
that we have a stric time to respect)

I would put a 1 in my case, hoping to get a easier (and doable)
problem to solve.
If it's still to hard I will try with 0. Better coding something easy
than just watch other people coding.

I won't self depreate ;) if I see that the problem is too easy for me,
I will go to the more difficoult group the next time, no problem at
all.

I understand your point, but.you really risk that people stop
coming to the Python Dojo just because they don't feel to be at the
proper level.

I will probably keep coming anyway, because I really like the "social"
part of the event (beer, meeting people, making new friends, talking
about our jobs etc), but I will keep watching other people coding.

Another person could simply say: mmm... interesting but... not for my
level. And stop coming. Do you really want this?

of course if it's just me wanting this no problem, I will adapt
someway, but let's see what the other people think about.

Thank you for the nice evening guys :)

It was amazing to meet you all and to try to learn something new.

I have a suggestion for the next time. Maybe it's just me that I'm a
newbie... I don't know...but... I would suggest to split us in
groups/projects with this target: experts, intermediate, basic. This
will allow new people to partecipate and maybe people like me to code
something.

This was my second Dojo I attended and even this time I didn't feel at
the level of coding the proposed problem. After a while it can be
boring :P

Why don't we try to bring also intermediate and basic problems to
solve so that people at any level can try coding something?

Looking forward to meet you all next time!

Re: [python-uk] Photos from the Python Dojo @ Bank of America

Hi Guys!

Many thanks to you all. It was my first dojo and it was amazing :)
Sorry if I had to run around 21:30 but I was really tired and asleep
(for this reason I also wasn't very helpful during the coding :( ).
I think I will come back the next time!

See you soon :)
