Re: [Qgis-user] Download paths from OpenStreetMap

2020-02-26 Per discussione Clifford Snow
It is possible to download paths from OpenStreetMap. The easiest way would
be use use overpass-turbo.eu. Here is a sample query to load all paths in
Montana. http://overpass-turbo.eu/s/R65. If the query is too large for
overpass, the area can be split into smaller sections. Another option is to
use the HOT export tool at https://export.hotosm.org/. The HOT export tool
does require an OSM id. Beyond that you can download the entire data file
for a country or region from http://download.geofabrik.de

There is a plugin the QuickOSM plugin for QGIS. I haven't used it much
since I'm used to running overpass but it has a clean user interface.

If you are not familiar with OSM tagging, I strongly recommend reviewing
the wiki at wiki.openstreetmap.org. It may help you understand the tags as
well as filter out features you may not want.

Let me know if you need more help.

Best,
Clifford

Re: [Qgis-user] Raster edge detection - Raster -> Vector

2019-09-25 Per discussione Clifford Snow
I don't know about QGIS, but OSM has a tool RapidID, developed by Facebook,
that looks at imagery and digitizes roads. RapidID is a tool for mapping in
OpenStreetMap. It shows missing roads. To use in New Zealand, you'll need
to report an issue request New Zealand be added to the location.

You can find RapidID at https://mapwith.ai/

For a list of countries available for RapidID go to
https://github.com/facebookmicrosites/Open-Mapping-At-Facebook/wiki/Available-Countries

To request adding your country, add an issue to their Github repository at
https://github.com/facebookincubator/RapiD/issues/new

Stefan,
Let me make one suggestion to Jorge's overpass query. By using the
Overpass-Turbo Wizard search for shop=bakery or shop=supermarket in Zurich.
By adding in Zurich, the query will leave out objects in adjacent cities.

QGIS. Should work like a charm.

Re: [Qgis-user] Can't find Python

2018-11-01 Per discussione Clifford Snow
Daniele,
Thanks - pip is likely the cause. I use pip often but have been ignoring
where pip installs. In the future I will be sure to use pip(3) --user. Now
I have to go through and reinstall a bunch of python modules.:-)

Snap may also contribute to the problem. Unfortunately Fedora doesn't
always have the apps needed or are badly out of date. For example I use
Nextcloud. Nextcloud version is currently 14.03. Fedora, last I checked, is
still on version 10.

Thanks for your help,

You might want to check out Missing Maps, missingmaps.org. I've been
involved with a number of efforts to map areas for just your purpose. MM
uses the HOT tasking manager tools [1] to break the work up into manageable
size and then opens it up so everyone can contribute. It just takes someone
willing to create a task and help spread the word. Andhra Pradesh is a
large state so I would suggest starting off with more vulnerable areas,
like coastal areas, first.

I did check OSM - overpass reported more than 200Mb of buildings - that's
before the query crashed from the size.

I don't believe it's possible to get Google data. Which is one of the
reasons for the success of OSM.

For my curiosity, what Google data do you want that's not in OSM?

3.2.3 is working fine on my mac. The Mac is running High Sierra.

I would recommend completely reinstalling it and all the dependencies as
you suggested. Under QGIS 2.18 the setting were in the users home
directory. I think your settings are kept in
/Users/YourUserName/Library/Applications Support/QGIS/QGIS3/profiles. Which
might indicate that the settings would be retained on a reinstall.

Here is the resources page [1] from our local QGIS user group. Second from

Re: [Qgis-user] Idea: Crowd-sourcing a batch-georeferencer plugin withQR code ?

2018-02-03 Per discussione Clifford Snow
Let me echo Brent Fraser suggestion to look at Field Papers, fieldpaper.org.
They accomplish what you are looking for. Each page of the field paper has
a QR code for georeferencing. Not only that they can be loaded in as a
baselayer in OSM editors. The site fieldpapers.org has a simple walk
through on how to go from nothing to pages loaded in for digitizing.

If you are going to use Field Papers with different surveyors from those
who digitize the results, make sure you have a common understanding of
symbols and notation the surveyors use. Otherwise digitizing may be limited.

Hope this helps.

[Qgis-user] Cool Features of QGIS

2017-12-05 Per discussione Clifford Snow
I'm doing a short presentation on Open Source GIS software this Friday. My
audience are 99% arcgis users. I'd like to tell them about a couple WOW
features in QGIS that ESRI doesn't provide or is just a pain to do.

I have never used ArcGIS so I'm struggling. Any suggestions would be most
appreciated. If you can point me to a website that I can get some images
from.

Sorry for the short notice, but I was just added to the agenda moments ago.

Thanks in Advance,
Clifford

Re: [Qgis-user] Anybody knows how to download OSM Turn Restrictions?

2017-08-30 Per discussione Clifford Snow
Overpass can grab turn restrictions. Read the wiki[1] for information on
how turn restrictions are tagged.

For example, this query [1] grabs all turn restrictions in my county. Once
the query has run download a geojson for loading into QGIS

[out:json][timeout:25];
// fetch area “skagit county” to search in
{{geocodeArea:skagit county}}->.searchArea;
// gather results
(
  // query part for: “type=restriction and restriction=*”

  relation["type"="restriction"]["restriction"](area.searchArea);
);
// print results
out body;
>;
out skel qt;

FYI - Read the OSM wiki[2] for information on how turn restrictions are
tagged to help improve the query or to narrow down the results

Emily,
You should be able to filter your data by county. Once the filter is in
place you could look at attribute data to see all the data.

Can you tell us what you are trying to accomplish so we can help with a
better answer?

[Qgis-user] QGIS Server

I'm trying to get the server running on a ubuntu machine. Apache2 works
fine, but when following the steps to configure the QGIS Server [1] apache
complains "The apache2 configtest failed."
The error is Invalid command FcgidIOTimeout.

It appears that libapache2-mod-fcgid isn't installed, but I verified that
version 1:2.3.9-1, is installed. It also the only apache2-mod installed.

Re: [Qgis-user] ARCGIS Geodatabase import

2016-02-08 Per discussione Clifford Snow
QGIS should be able to open FileGDB. When opening the vector file, select
"directory" instead of file. You will be prompted to select which layers
you want to add.

To verify if your gdal is capable of opening FileGDB, you can run "ogrinfo
--formats" to get a list of supported formats.

Proprietary software also comes with bugs, arcgis is no exception. One of
the advantages is you can see the status of the bug and help resolve the
bug. Proprietary software seems to be focusing on fixing bugs for their
biggest customers.

Re: [Qgis-user] best way to download Large datasets from OSM

2016-01-14 Per discussione Clifford Snow
I just found this [1] morning. Looks like a good way to get started. I does
require installing PostGIS. The instructions are for Linux but Boundless
geo has installation pages for OS X and Windows. I have no experience on
Windows. The advantage of using a database back end is being able to run
queries for just the data needed. That should allow QGIS to run without a
30GB load.

You can share your QGIS styles with the repository for others to use.

[Qgis-user] Projections Not Recognized

2015-11-15 Per discussione Clifford Snow
Local governmental agencies in Washington State use the projection,
Washington State Plane North and State Plane South. I believe they are
ESRI: 102748 and 107349. When opened in QGIS they appear as USER:11.
These reference systems are included in the list (srs.db). I'm wondering
why QGIS doesn't match.

According to Spatial Reference the .prj is:

PROJCS["NAD_1983_StatePlane_Washington_South_FIPS_4602_Feet",GEOGCS["GCS_North_American_1983",DATUM["D_North_American_1983",SPHEROID["GRS_1980",6378137,298.257222101]],PRIMEM["Greenwich",0],UNIT["Degree",0.017453292519943295]],PROJECTION["Lambert_Conformal_Conic"],PARAMETER["False_Easting",1640416.7],PARAMETER["False_Northing",0],PARAMETER["Central_Meridian",-120.5],PARAMETER["Standard_Parallel_1",45.84],PARAMETER["Standard_Parallel_2",47.34],PARAMETER["Latitude_Of_Origin",45.34],UNIT["Foot_US",0.30480060960121924]]

A typical shapefile .prj file shows:

PROJCS["NAD83_HARN_Washington_South_ftUS",GEOGCS["GCS_NAD83(HARN)",DATUM["D_North_American_1983_HARN",SPHEROID["GRS_1980",6378137,298.257222101]],PRIMEM["Greenwich",0],UNIT["Degree",0.017453292519943295]],PROJECTION["Lambert_Conformal_Conic"],PARAMETER["standard_parallel_1",47.34],PARAMETER["standard_parallel_2",45.84],PARAMETER["latitude_of_origin",45.34],PARAMETER["central_meridian",-120.5],PARAMETER["false_easting",1640416.667],PARAMETER["false_northing",0],UNIT["Foot_US",0.30480060960121924]]

Any suggestions on how to fix so QGIS recognizes these shapefiles
would be appreciated.

Clifford

I didn't catch the HARN. And the 10348 and 10349 are both in meters. I'm
getting NAD83_HARN in feet which doesn't match the definition of 10349. And
10749 is in feet but not with HARN. So maybe it isn't in the table.

Alex,
You got me thinking that I have the wrong projection. epsg.io lead me to
2926 and 2927.

However, both of those are in the QGIS. Assuming that QGIS uses the .prj
file for the reference, what fields does it match?

QGIS does operate correctly using the custom projection. However, for
someone new, like me, it helps knowing the projections.

Thanks,
Clifford

Views are not selectable from the Add PostGIS icon. But starting in version
2.10 you can add the view points_of_polygons by using the DB Manager. A
unique id is no longer required. If you are using an earlier version then
you'll need to create a unique row number. The stackexchange link you
provided gives an example of using ROWNUMBER() OVER() to create the unique
id.

Re: [Qgis-user] How to display SID raster on QGIS 2.10 PISA Kubuntu 15.04 ?

Last night at a cugos.org meeting, I learned how to compile GDAL with MrSID
capabilities. The system he used as a chromebook. You can find the
instructions in the link below. I believe that QGIS uses your system's GDAL
installation for most of its operations.

BTW, I have downloaded the SDK 9.1.0 from Imtech. The ReadMe says:

 INSTALLATION:

No specific installation is required to use the MrSID SDK beyond copying
the SDK contents to your local machine.

After installing, we suggest building and running the example program to
 assure correct installation and behaviour.

But copying the SDK download (unpacked) somewhere on my disk obviously is
not enough and I am lost when it comes to building etc.

Re: [Qgis-user] database Mexico

2015-07-17 Per discussione Clifford Snow
Have you looked into OSM data? You can get a Mexico Planet file from
http://download.geofabrik.de/north-america.html. It is only 88Mb. If you
wanted to look at connections to cities in the US, you could pull the
border states individually. I can't remember if QGIS will read PBF format
files, but shapefiles are available from the same source, at no cost. The
data is available under the ODbL license which should be suitable for your
research.

Good luck,

Re: [Qgis-user] Export .shp file to .osm file format

2015-07-07 Per discussione Clifford Snow
The ogr2osm python script works great for converting shapefiles to .osm
files. I use the one found at https://github.com/pnorman/ogr2osm.

ogr2osm allows you to create a translation script to convert shapefile
features to osm tags. The github repository includes examples of the
translation tables.

As a note - please don't upload data to OSM without following the import
guidelines.

I'm on a later version of QGIS which can download OSM data. A couple of
tips. Make sure the area you are selecting is not too large. Try a smaller
area. I believe the api max is .5 degrees by .5 degrees. Second, choose a
file name. If the download is successful you should have a [yourfile].osm
saved. The .osm file can be opened with the Add Vector Layer control.

As an alternative, you can install JOSM [1] to download the area. If the
area you want is too big for a single download, download a bunch of smaller
areas until you have what you need. Then save the data layer to a file with
a .osm extension.

Hope that helps.

In the past I was able to use a similar set of data that broke the roads /

The addr file is just a database of address ranges. I believe each address
range has an id of the associated road segment. Some kind of join like

[Qgis-user] Georeferencer create wld instead of tfw

I'm curious why the georeferencer creates a wld world file instead of a
tfw. Reading other sites, appending a w on to the raster filename seems to
be the standard convention. I just created my first georeferenced tif. I
missed the wld world file and thought I'd had done something wrong. Now
that I know, it is no big deal, but I'm curious as to why.

I believe that OpenLayers is included by default in 2.4. Make sure that all

there is no OpenLayers Plugin.

QGIS is crashing when attempting to use the OpenStreetMap in OpenLayers.
Guess reading the crash report is next step.

I've been using QGIS for the past couple of years so not much of an expert.

To download from the OSM server, you just need select a bounding box of
suitable size for downloading. OSM won't allow downloading an entire
country. But you can download portion of a city. To download an area, from
the OpenLayers plugin, add an OSM layer. Zoom into the area needed. Then
from the Vectors menu, select OpenStreetMap-download data. From looking at
the resulting .osm file, QGIS is using the overpass api to download the
data.

You can read more about overpass on the OSM wiki at
https://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Overpass_API. Note, I usually use
overpass-turbo.eu to grab data.

Not sure I answered your question. Write back with more details and I'll
attempt to do better.

thing I want to do is to geocode everything so I can do math on it.

That should be a project that OSM can help with. We have some experience
mapping prior to and especially after disasters. Living in the PNW has made
me acutely aware of the environment we live in. Not only am I near Puget
Sound, in the middle of earthquake county, but the damn river near by
floods every year!

Addresses interested me because of the opportunity for door to door
routing. Interpolation is nice if you have all day to find the address. But
don't try it at night. Being able to route right up a driveway to the front
door, while being a long way off, is do able. We just need more volunteer
mappers. (I'm always making the pitch. Don't let me scare you off.) We had
a good number of volunteers import building and address to Seattle. If you
look at Seattle, every address and building should be in OSM. Next we want
to extend at least the address mapping to all of King County.

I can use what you said to help encourage more people to help out.

BTW - We could not do this without QGIS and PostGIS. They are a life saver.
