Hartanto Sanjaya has a nice slide for calculating a basic volume for a lake

May help if you are unfamiliar with the tools available in GRASS.

Re: [Qgis-user] Proposed attribute table UI redesign

2011-11-15 Thread Mars Sjoden
I like:

1. Reduce Margins
2. Split buttons into groups
3. Reduce Min row height (could this be adjustable within a setting of
QGIS?)

Disklike:

"look for" should at least be "Search" or "Search for"

Agree or Suggestion?:
a simple >magnifying glass search icon< for a "Search" button OR
  - Simply selecting search parameters (or typing) automagically live
searches (possible?)
  - Replace Search Button with an X button to clear search parameters

a simple >magnifying glass search icon with +< for advanced search

Onto a separate topic...

You must know your way around Designer.

I have been trying to figure out if it is possible to create an identity
window that allows direct editing within it.
I have only a couple hours after work to investigate, but between kids and
the need for sleep I don't make much progress! ^_^

Thanks for your UI design remake, It is an improvement, and if searching
can be activated LIVE then I agree a Search Button is really unnecessary.

a "workaround" is to use the old symbology, you have the button in the
"style" tab of the vector properties.

Or as Brad suggested set the transparency before you categorize.
You do this by clicking on Symbol and setting any common characteristics
you want like transparency.

Then click OK and then click Classify.

I've only used transparency and setting the borders to NoPen so I can't
say others work for sure.

By the way I'm using 1.7.1Wroclaw on Fedora 14 linux.

Hi again, this is definitely not my day of luck with QGIS.

Any help would be appreciated. I am teaching a workshop on QGIS

I had this problem in the past. Unfortunately there are not many plugins
for raster analysis in QGIS and I usually I end up doing in in GRASS.
The command in GRASS for inspection your raster layers, using polygon
vectors:
http://grass.osgeo.org/gdp/html_grass64/v.what.rast.html

You need to run r.null to set the unwanted values to null (i.e. positive
or negative values).

Hi, you have to add the path of the /bin folder in your R installation
in the "path" environment variable of Windows. Due to the afct that the
rpy2 library (the "bridge" between python and R) for Windows is not
updated you must use R <= 2.11

In the QGIS wiki you can find detailed instructions.

[Qgis-user] volume calculations in qgis

2011-11-15 Thread Bernhard Draeyer
I have 2 high resolution raster DEM's before and after a recent flood
event. The aim would be to get for different areas a) erosion/negative
volumes b) accumulation/positive volumes and net volume.

First of all, i subtracted the actual surface from the 'before'-surface
to get a difference surface with positive (accumulation) and negative
(erosion) values.
Then i created a shape layer with polygons of different areas of
interest. For each of them i need seperate volumetrics. Ideally, the
polygons should contain in the end attribute values for accumulation,
erosion and net volumes.
Now i was looking without success for a well adapted method to solve my
problem in QGIS or SAGA.

How should i proceed? Is there any method in QGIS to sum up positive and
negative raster values under polygons and put them in seperate attribute
fields per polygon? Do i have to convert the raster in a point layer? I
saw, that in esri's 3d analyst exist a tin polygon volume function, that
covers this task. Does anything similar exist with an os gis?

Many thanks for your help.

Bernie

[Qgis-user] is it possible to reverse geocode a file of points using qgis and openstreetmap?

2011-11-15 Thread M . E . Dodd
I see there are various openstreetmap services such as nominatum/mapquest but
don't really understand how these might interact with qgis or if it would be a
separate operation outside of qgis. Would be much nicer inside qgis so you
could easily set up table to get the different bits of reverse geocoded
information on address. Possibly also have a way of feeding back to
openstreetmap via qgis directly e.g. sending in map or gps traces etc.

Subject: Re: [Qgis-user] Simplify?

GRASS has some very good line simplification options which I believe can be
accessed from within QGis. I like to run a light Douglas Peucker
simplification to cut the vertice count down without dramatically altering the
appearance of the data, followed by Lang simplification to generalize the
appearance of things. A good description of the difference between these
algorithms can be found at http://psimpl.sourceforge.net/douglas-peucker.html
and http://psimpl.sourceforge.net/lang.html.

BTW, using a vary small threshold tolerance with Douglas Peucker is a great way
to remove vertices in a straight-line segments. For example, running a
tolerance of .0015 on a set of fairly complex world country borders in GRASS
yields the following for me:

Number of vertices was reduced from 606998 to 230824

This pruning is not discernible against the original data set until about
1.25 map scale. At 1:5 it starts to look a little blocky.

MapShaper is a great tool, and by doing a pruning of your excess vertices as
metioned above, it might put the data under the 80 MB limit and allow you to
use it.

Thanks for your response. I have tried Mapshaper on smaller shp files, it is

I would still very much like to get the Simplify function working. I assume
from your comments that in general the QGIS Simplify function works fine so
either I am doing something wrong, or there is a problem with my local copy of
QGIS which I could resolve be re-installing?

By the way I can't find the DPSimplify plugin, any idea where I might find it?

I see at least 3 tools in QGIS to do simply.
The one you mentioned in the vector menu (part of ftools)
The DPSimplify plugin (appears to be the precursor to the above tool)
and the Simply function in the vector editor

Of those the last one is the one I've used the most but operates on
individual features at a time. The key question I can see for all of
them though is what tolerance are you setting and what projection is
your data in since this determines the units for tolerance.

I just tested with a tolerance of 1 on a GCS Lat/Lon WGS84 dataset of
lines and it seemed to work fine, I imagine if I had left the tolerance
at 0.0001 it would have done nothing.

Worst case scenario mapshaper is an online tool just for this.

Enjoy,
Alex

It works when selecting features by clicking to map, but does not work

Yes, I have found similar problems recently, unfortunately, I haven't
had the time to fix them yet. The module that we use to calculate the
tessellation is not ideal, and as soon as it makes its way into GEOS,
I'd like to use the JTS voronoi polygons solution in QGIS. Please file
a ticket in the bug tracker for now, and I'll see if I can work out a
workaround. In the mean time, if someone else can get to this sooner,
feel free to submit a patch as well!

Cheers,

Carson

Hello José,

this error has happened some times before, and has been reported as
quite difficult to isolate:
http://osgeo-org.1803224.n2.nabble.com/Fwd-Hello-td3267307.html

More hits in Google lead to qgis mailing lists.

This is a more detailed analysis on the specific Python error:
http://bytes.com/topic/python/answers/598332-ioerror-errno-4-interrupted-system-call

I'm sorry I don't have a solution ready, so I hope that adding
information to this issue will help developers (of rpy2, if I get it
right) to fix it. Of course anyone willing to provide a patch is
welcomed to propose it to rpy2 developers.

Thanks for understanding, and I hope it will be fixed asap!
In the meanwhile a virtual machine with Linux is probably the quickest
and less-effort workaround.

In the New Symbology, is not what is named "Categorized" actually
Graduated and what is called "Graduated" actually Categorized?
Under "Graduated" the user must classify into n classes, which is
making n categories, while under what is named "Categorized"
the user gets a continuous color bar.

[Qgis-user] Voronoi polygon errors

Two QGis plugins can create Voronoi Polygons but both seems the have errors?

Using the fTools plugin and using transparency in the symbology shows this:

Doing the same using MMQgis Voronoi show this:
http://osgeo-org.1803224.n2.nabble.com/file/n6995908/Voronoi.png

fTools add some directly wrong polygons while MMQgis just doubles up some of
the polygons

Hi Cameron

Two suggestions, but not an excact solution:

You can use the mmqgis plugin and select "Hub Distance". With this you can
transfer an attribute (or an ID and then use a join afterwards) to a
pointlayer from the nearest line in a linelayer.

But be aware that "nearest" line will be based only on a "centre point" for
the line and if your lines are very curved or of varying lengths you may not
get the expected result.

You might use the "Vector-Geometry Tools-Extract Nodes" to convert your line
layer to a point layer and use this point layer as the Hublayer instead of
the line layer.

Anybody knows an excact method?

Hello Eelke, all,

on OSGeo side there is a central repository for educational material
called ELOGeo:

http://elogeo.nottingham.ac.uk/xmlui

and also the older, richer OSGeo catalog of educational material:

http://www.osgeo.org/educational_content

that led me to a QGIS+GRASS+R course from University Davis that can be
close to what you are looking for: http://www.osgeo.org/node/886

I suggest to everyone who wants to share tutorials and course materials
to add the links to these two repositories. More information on OSGeo
educational activities is available here:
http://wiki.osgeo.org/wiki/Education_and_Curriculum_Committee

Eelke, all the best for your course!

Re: [Qgis-user] Snap points to nearest line

2011-11-15 Thread Nicklas Avén
Hallo

If you have your data stored in PostGIS you can do it directly in the
database.

To get a new table with the snapped points and the line attribudes you
can run:

CREATE TABLE line_attribute_point AS
SELECT distinct on (linetable.id) linetable.*,
ST_ClosestPoint(linetable.geom, pointtable.geom) as snapped_point
FROM
linetable,pointtable
ORDER BY ST_Distance(linetable.geom, pointtable.geom);

Something like that.

But this will be slow if you have many points and polygons. Then you can
use ST_Dwithin to speed it up if you know how far away the line and
point can be that should be snapped. Say you don't want to snap longer
than 100 meters then:

CREATE TABLE line_attribute_point AS
SELECT distinct on (linetable.id) linetable.*,
ST_ClosestPoint(linetable.geom, pointtable.geom) as snapped_point
FROM
linetable INNER JOIN pointtable on ST_Dwithin(linetable.geom,
pointtable.geom, 100)
ORDER BY ST_Distance(linetable.geom, pointtable.geom);

Something like that.

Re: [Qgis-user] Snap points to nearest line

2011-11-15 Thread Andreas Neumann

To automatically get the attributes from an object, in my view, only
using PostgreSQL/PostGIS with triggers.

yes - this would work, but the drawback is that the triggers are only
triggered on saving the data and not when the snapping happens ...
Saving in QGIS only happens manually after a user clicked on the save
button or leaves the edit sesssion.

It would be nice to have the option of immediate saves to PostgreSQL
for each edit of any single record, for such purposes.

Hi Cameron,

Snapping works fine, but automatically getting the attributes from an object it
snaps to is not possible.

Re: [Qgis-user] group symbology layers

2011-11-15 Thread Andreas Neumann
Yes - a grouping feature is missing. But it can be emulated in the new
symbology with the rule-based renderer by using a rule with a
IN('cat1','cat2',...) operator.

Bonjour Florent,

check that all package have been uptaded correctly, specially the one named
python-qgis. Check also that all previous package have been removed. You can
also try ldconfig command on root to update path db to your lib.

I agree that the overall transparency slider is missing form the new
symbology (graduated and categorized) like we have in the old symbology.

In any case at least in the development version of QGIS you can select
multiple symbology classes, right click the mouse and set the
transparency of those classes.
