Re: [Qgis-user] New to QGIS, Best solution?

2012-02-23 Thread Nathan Woodrow
Hi Alister,

This is something that Carson Farmer and I have talked about before. He was
planning on porting fTools over to C++ and into the QGIS analysis lib, and
I was thinking about adding a objects menu with access to the tools, was
also going to add things like Reverse etc.

I noticed that you mentioned it as a GSoC project, that would be handy to
get it off the ground running.

RE: [Qgis-user] New to QGIS, Best solution?

2012-02-23 Thread Alister Hood
Hi David,
It really depends on:
- what you need to do, and
- what addons you would have for MapInfo or ArcGIS.

I don't do a lot of GIS work, and I have no experience with ArcGIS, but I do
have MapInfo.
I gather some features of MapInfo are supposed to be quite good for things like
inputting and managing data, which is why it has been quite popular in local
government (at least in NZ and Australia).
As I see it MapInfo's main downsides are:
1) It isn't very powerful - you need to buy all sorts of addons if you really
want to do much in it. (I guess with QGIS you also need to use something like
GRASS for some things. The trouble with MapInfo is that it seems like you're
not really getting anything for your dollar.) If some of the major addons were
included with MapInfo then it would be a lot easier to understand why people
buy it.
2) In some respects e.g. map-making it is very user-unfriendly. Especially the
problems with the way its layout windows are connected to map windows. And
QGIS is just generally much nicer to use than MapInfo.
3) It doesn't handle data in all sorts of different formats nicely like QGIS
does.

I generally don't even think about using MapInfo these days - I haven't
bothered to install the last couple of updates. And MapInfo isn't going
anywhere fast - like someone mentioned in the link below, they seem to put all
their effort into marketing, while the software stays stuck in the mid '90s,
with little indication that it will ever really improve.
The one MapInfo feature that I currently miss in QGIS is the ability to perform
operations in the Object menu like "Split" on selected features - ftools in
QGIS only operates with whole layers.

I guess MapInfo is _a little_ less buggy than QGIS, but not as much as I'd
expect, especially given that it doesn't really seem to do much, and there is
so little change in each release.

You might be interested in some of the discussion at
http://woostuff.wordpress.com/2011/07/07/browser-wars-qgis-vs-mapinfo-11/

But I'm not sure how relevant this all is to you - it sounds like you are
thinking of building some sort of standalone application or web-based solution.
How would that work with .Net and QGIS?
If you're integrating with .NET I imagine you should check out Mapwindow. Have
you?
Mapwindow is quite nice, but it generally* doesn't seem to be as powerful or
user-friendly as QGIS.

*For some specific things there are very good plugins for Mapwindow that aren't
available for QGIS.

Regards,
Alister

[Qgis-user] vector to openlayers

2012-02-23 Thread António M . Rodrigues
Hi all,

I use QGIS and save most of my vector data in shapefile format. Now I'm
developing a WebGIS using openlayers and want to overlay some of my own
information on top of some base-layers (google, openstreetmap, ...).

My problem is not to be able to export the data (either in kml or geojson
format). My question is: isn't there any way of exporting the data together
with some symbology scheme from a QGIS project. Something similar to what
Mapserver Export does.

Thanks in advance.

Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS and Computer Security (Windows)

2012-02-23 Thread Richard Males
Thank you and to all others who have posted replies. I did not
expect that this issue would call forth so many responses. There have
been a number of helpful suggestions.

Please note that, in some cases, the users I am trying to convince are
in government agencies that have very specific and stringent policies
about software installation. In one case, only authorized IT
personnel are permitted to install any software on employee computers.
I am not sure that these policies have come up against the world of
open-source, plug-in based architecture.

I don't know if it goes totally against the philosophy of QGIS, but
maybe there could be a feature to allow an admin option within QGIS to
require password protection before being able to fetch plugins or
activate plugins. I expect that it could be defeated, but might help
to allay some concerns. Under this scenario, a QGIS administrator who
could get at a QGIS "security options" screen where various features
such as downloading plugins could be enabled/disabled for a particular
user installation.

If anyone is interested, the project I am working on involves
estimating delay on transportation networks when roads are flooded.
The architecture has the road network represented in QGIS, which is
then exported to a Spatialite database via a contributed plugin. From
there, a C# program reads the database and does the needed shortest
path and delay cost estimation calculations. Choosing this
architecture has made things very modular and workable.

QGIS is wonderful software, this is a terrific community. I
introduced QGIS to a professor who is working on my project and uses
ArcGIS, showing him the line direction decoration capability and
Nathan W's lineswitch plugin, and he responded: "That's interesting
about QGIS, because we have had much difficulty do the same thing in
ArcGIS.".

Thanks again to all who have responded.

I get this error message

"qgis.exe stopped working"

I get the same type of crash when trying to change CRS before adding a
WMS layer.

I'm using windows 7, 64 bit. QGIS standalone installer

Anyone else experienced this? Should i go back to 1.7.3?

[Qgis-user] QGIS, Tilecache and status bar messagge

2012-02-23 Thread iomeneandrei
Dear all,
I have set a tilecache server based on tilecache (http://tilecache.org/) and
I load layers from it in WMS.

I have made a seeding for a specific layer, and I have generated all the
cached 256x256 images. When I load this layer in WMS in QGIS, it loads it
properly and I have in the status bar "0 tiles request in background, 0
cache hits, 13 cache misses, 0 errors.
What's the meaning of "13 cache misses"? Does QGIS read the cached images or
it forces the creation of them?

Thank you very much,

a

[Qgis-user] Highlight color of polygons with fill options set to null

2012-02-23 Thread iomeneandrei
Dear all,
I'm using QGIS 1.7.4 for windows 7 64 bit (standalone installer), and I have
a polygon layer with fill options set to null. I have set for it a style
only for outline.

When I open attribute table and select a record the related polygon is not
highlighted in any way. Neither the polygon or the line of that polygon.
Is it normal in QGIS? Is there a way to set the color of the outline of a
selected polygon?

Thank you very much,

a

[Qgis-user] QGIS 1.7.4

2012-02-23 Thread Werner Macho

Dear Users and Developers,

Due to the fact that the qgis-1.7.4.tar.bz2 tarball had some problems
which leads to being not able to build QGIS on some Systems the problems
were solved and QGIS now should build on any System.

As there were only some small changes in the build system, the packages
which have already been built are not affected.

To provide a source tarball to all people out there who prefer to build
QGIS out of the tarball I reuploaded the fixed version of the tarball.
It is available from the usual download adress
http://qgis.org/downloads/qgis-1.7.4.tar.bz2

sorry for the problems that this tarball might have caused to some people

kind regards
Werner
