Re: [Qgis-user] labels: avoid duplicated labels
Goyo, while I enjoy working with postgis a lot, the reality is I cannot expect my users to hack a sql view each time they need to label a map. It is not feasible to anticipate all situations and just create new items in my database to handle each one. It's difficult enough to manage the data as it is. I will just get a call or email asking how can the multiple labels be avoided, and there is no easy answer for that. The answer I've come up with is to select the features I want to label, and create a new layer in qgis with the corresponding query, remove the symbol and label it - much like the old label type layers in MapServer. Re: [Qgis-user] PyQGIS book in the works? Easier to understand online API Documentation?
David You wrote (You) just absolutely have to make user-friendly documentation about your product, especially the api you keep talking about. I have been on the mailing lists of numerous open source projects over the years, and someone always raises this. Why? Well, its true. However, asking and getting are two different things. A commercial company will just hire someone and pay them. A big company (E$RI) will hire someone really good and pay them accordingly. An open source project cannot do so. It only happens if there is someone (or ones) who is (a) passionate about documentation, (b) knows the system very well and (c) has the spare time to write (and writing is very time consuming). Sadly, this does not always happen. In an open source project the primary goal is to solve Real Problems with Real Code; and that goal attracts programmers - who care about good code and not user-friendly documentation - and not so much documenters. Not wanting to be negative - just hoping to guide your expectations! Derek PS If you have the time, there is an interesting article on the differences between Linux and Windows (http://linux.oneandoneis2.org/LNW.htm); section Subproblem #3a: There is a culture is of relevance here, as is Problem #5: The myth of user-friendly. My favourite quote from that article is Linux is not interested in market share. Linux does not have customers. Linux does not have shareholders, or a responsibility to the bottom line. Linux was not created to make money. Linux does not have the goal of being the most popular and widespread OS on the planet. My personal view is that QGIS is in a very similar position... Chrest, David 10/12/13 4:19 AM Thanks so much for the info Richard. Gary's PyQGIS Programmers Guide looks like just what I was talking about. Glad to see this book will soon (hopefully) come out. Should be a great and fill a much needed void. No, not being paid by ESRI :-) I just know that the first thing people look for is god documentation about software. That alone can be the deciding factor before somebody looses interest or finds it too troublesome to work with. Make things so much easier to figure than going on a hunt every time you want to do something. Plenty of books out there on other free/OS software, especially by PACKT Publishing, would be great to see some more QGIS/PyQGIS materials out there (at least 250 pages, not just a white paper in disguise as a slender book.) OK, so the big selling point I keep reading is that one can use python to write scripts, automate processes, write plugins, even a nice new python console, but there is no api docs for python? That seems very strange! Again, looks like Gary's upcoming book may fill the void. The Introduction in the PyQGIS Cookbook for 2.0 states: There is a complete QGIS API reference that documents the classes from the QGIS libraries. Pythonic QGIS API is nearly identical to the API in C++. So I click the link but nothing tells me if am looking at the python api or the cpp api. Users will not care about the cpp api, we just want to know how to do all this cool python stuff. If it becomes a hassle or takes to long to figure out (people have clients, budgets, deadlines), then they will get turned off and go back to ArcGIS where everything is explained plainly nice and neatly. ESRI made a HUGE, monumental mistake when it first released ArcObjects with miniscule documentation. Loads of people were fuming. Took them 10 years to get things right again and thank goodness they went on the python path. A very talented programmer I work with here told me that it is well known programmers don't make the best writers. Just absolutely have to make user-friendly documentation about your product, especially the api you keep talking about. Re: [Qgis-user] Finding 'lost' plugins?
Johanna, You still having this problem? I noticed the plugin repository was down for a short time on Sunday night as my guess it was being worked on. Wonder if this had anything to do with your problem? For Windows Users, custom downloaded plugins now normally live in: C:\Users\{username}\.qgis2\python\plugins fTools and Gdal Tools should be in: C:\{program files}\QGIS Dufour\apps\qgis\python\plugins In QGIS 2.0 the Sextante is now the Processing toolbox and built in. Re: [Qgis-user] Arc Map to QGis
I think none, just open the raster dialogue, click on the tiff file QGIS will display it, in the correct place on the map - providing you set it to the correct CRS. If you ( QGIS) don't know what this is, you may be able to find out using gdalinfo. One caveat is that a tiff can be a coverage or an image, and you may need to tell QGIS to use pseudocolor to plot it rather than just plot it natively. [Qgis-user] pyqgis (beginners' question)
Hi, I'm trying to write my first plugin with pyqgis. I usually do my statistics analysis with R (or matlab), but I would like to speed up things with a custom plugin. Who knows it could be useful in the future for others. I tried R in Sextante, but I think a separate plugin would be more useful. ok, I created my plugin structure with pluginbuilder and started to customize things. To keep it simple, in my ui file, I created a qcombobox to select a layer, and a qlistwidget to select one or more than one fields. In my py file the code is something like this (most of this is adapted from other people's code :-) )... - def chooselayer1(self): self.dlg.ui.chosenlayer1.clear() for name, layer in QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().mapLayers().iteritems(): if layer.type() == QgsMapLayer.VectorLayer: self.dlg.ui.chosenlayer1.addItem(layer.name()) self.set_select_attributes() def set_select_attributes(self): self.dlg.ui.Column.clear() if self.dlg.ui.chosenlayer1.currentText() != : layername1 = self.dlg.ui.chosenlayer1.currentText() for name, selectlayer in QgsMapLayerRegistry.instance().mapLayers().iteritems(): if selectlayer.name() == layername1: for field in selectlayer.dataProvider().fields(): self.dlg.ui.Column1.addItem(field.name()) - Question 1: I want to include a button to calculate for example relative frequencies for a field. In R I would something like: data$fx - data$x / sum(data$x) ###this would add a column to object data In pyqgis, I would need to get for example the selected field. Would it be something like: selectlayer.pendingFields() / sum of x which I have no idea how to calculate. Question 2: create a button to sum a selection of fields: again, in R: data$s - data$var1 + data$var2. I know this are very beginners' questions. I've been studying the material in pyqgis cookbook and qgis api. It's very useful, yet I'm still struggling. Another detail which makes it much harder for beginners are the changes in api 2.0. For all beginners out there it makes it quite hard to google for help. But I guess there's no way around it. When you log out, you have pick to login to Unity 2D. Other options are to trying installing XFCE, KDE or another window manager. Another way to test, try booting OSGeoLive from a usb or DVD to see if it has the same problem. [Qgis-user] Topological editing of two vector layers
Hi, Iam new to QGIS. I have two boundary vector layers, the one exist of polygons of all the provinces and the other of all the districts. The district boundaries must be aligned with the provincial boundaries. Since there is so much errors that needs alignment and rectification I was wondering if there isn't an easier way as to snap to the boundaries without to drag each vertex which is very time consuming.
