Thanks I think its because overwheigt. The file itself is few gigas. The big problem is to create a legend to one or two layers . It brings forward all the layers detailed and its impossible to handle. Re: [Qgis-user] QGIS maps for Garmin GPS
[I just noticed the typos in my Subject line. I hope that has not violated any list etiquette.] Brent, The OSM project sounds interesting, and as you say, there is more interest in high density areas. If I did not have the number of projects on the go that I have, I might take a look at it. I live on the BC Sunshine Coast and bought 092G042, -043 and -053 from a map store in Richmond. They did not have 092G052 so I downloaded the PDF and they plotted it for me. The outfit they had been getting these from went bankrupt and now the have no supplier for these maps. They can plot mine for me, but cannot plot a bunch and sell them. In the world of maps, British Columbia is a black hole. Ignoring errors, in the maps I purchased, like a very significant local creek is not on the provincial or federal maps, and they put another creek in it's ravine, the biggest deficiency is that they only show about 5% of the vast trail system in the Regional District. The SCRD has these trail files on their open data site, along with lakes, parks, etc., so I have no problem getting them. This mapping, which has been all consuming for the last few months, is only a part of a much bigger project. And I only have so much energy. So, I seek the elegant, simple answer for my GPS map. But, I may just shelve that project for now. Thanks for your insights, Stephen On 04/03/2017 7:10 PM, Brent Fraser wrote: Stephen, I'd recommend having another, closer look at the OSM project. While their strategy worked very well in England (its birthplace) and other areas with a high population density, places like Canada have struggled. The Canadian federal government adjusted its license to allow bulk uploading of the 1:50K basemap data. But as you've pointed out, while it is better than nothing, it can be very out of date (a lot of maps haven't been updated since the 1980's). Don't get discouraged though; look at it as an opportunity to contribute. I've added trails from my Saskatchewan home town (along with street names, building names, etc), and paths in parks in Calgary. I get quite a feeling of satisfaction in seeing them instantly appearing in the OpenStreetMap mapping tiles. Many of the provinces have taken over base mapping from the Feds. I see that BC has made PDFs of their 1:20K mapping available at: http://geobc.gov.bc.ca/base-mapping/imagery/topographic.html Ironically, while they acknowledge using OSM data in their base maps, their own license appears to prevent their data being uploaded and used in OSM! Maybe they will come around to the idea of Open Data. What area (or map sheet) are you interested in? No problems Stephen, Unfortunately many government agencies can't keep up with edits of new tracks/trails but that is the beauty of Open Street Map. Your contribution, by adding tracks, means that all the folks making derivative products get the benefits. You also get the benefit of their knowledge in the creation of products to suit your GPS. Indeed you can even use OSM mapping as a background in QGIS so you get the same benefits immediately. If you have some GPS files, drop me a few and I will get them loaded for you to get you started. The Mountain bike community are quite active in some areas and have great wiki information on tagging for trails http://wiki.openstreetmap.org/wiki/Mountain_biking https://openmtbmap.org/ Cheers - Phil -Original Message- From: Stephen Wandling [mailto:swandl...@gmail.com] Sent: Sunday, March 5, 2017 12:14 PM To: Phil (The Geek) Wyatt Cc: qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org Subject: Re: [Qgis-user] QGOS maps fort Garmin GPS Phil, Someone suggested the same OSM approach in an off list email. In the case of QGIS our expression engine supports a lot of functions which just can't be translated to Postgres/PostGIS functions. In this case you have no choice but to fetch everything and do the filtering/sorting on the client side. QGIS does have robust support for "compiling expressions", which is basically translating them from QGIS' expression engine to functions supported by the backend. This works great for simple expressions, and depending on the provider even some complex ones (eg postgres provider has large coverage of mapping qgis functions->provider functions. OGR does not and can only handle simple field=value compilation). Some providers also have support for compiling the sort order to perform on the database side - unfortunately postgres does not (see https://github.com/qgis/QGIS/blob/master/src/providers/postgres/qgspostgresfeatureiterator.cpp#L130). I'm sure Matthias would love to re-enable that code and give postgres a performance boost if someone wants to step up and sponsor it! [If it is easier to do in ArcMap, I have access to the ESRI software also.] Please keep in mind that while I have a general idea about GIS work and have been making some maps, for plotting, that satisfy my needs, I get very lost when I am subjected to acronyms and technical jargon. If is not clear and straightforward, it will probably be wasted on me. I still think it is a misconfigured WMS server. Which server are you using? Which data are you using? And there is definitly a scale dependence, as you can see in the getcapabilities document: 75500 for all layer. Which in epsg:4326 means that >1:3 you will not see a map. When you have layer 5 and ask QGIS to it's data extent you get: 5,50 : 10,53 which is a huge bbox ! So if you load a layer in QGiS, and nog give it a bbox, it get's the layers default extent, which is above one, giving rise to a scale of 1:560,292 (aka a scaledenominator of >500.000 as opposed to the 75500 one when the server starts to show something. So in short: - WHEN you are at 1:3 on an excisting map and load a layer it will be ok - WHEN you are at a higher zoom level you will see nothing (a transparent image) - WHEN you start with an empty map, you will start at a zoomlevel which is much to big. BUT changing the zoomlevel in the statusbar to 1:3 will just show something. The crux is looking at scale-dependent layers needs some context knowledge :-) Regards, Richard Duivenvoorde ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org List info: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user Unsubscribe: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
[Qgis-user] converting ECW to GTiff for Linux
Hello: (I'm double posting as this problem is somewhere between GDAL and QGIS.) I have converted an ECW compressed aerial photo to geotiff with JPEG compression on a Windows computer with gdal_translate. The resulting tif image displays fine with QGIS on the Windows machine. GDAL version 2.1.3 on the Windows computer, and QGIS 2.18.4 My command was similar to: gdal_translate -of GTiff -projwin . -co TILED=YES -co TFW=YES -co COMPRESS=JPEG -co PHOTOMETRIC=YCBCR in.ecw out.tif I then copy the tif (and tfw) to my Linux machine, and try to open with QGIS, but QGIS crashes immediately. I should note that gdalinfo shows full information on both the Windows and Linux systems. On the Linux computer GDAL is 2.1.2 and QGIS is 2.18.4 . Any ideas what could be the cause of QGIS crashing with the gdal_translate converted tif image? Is there something that needs to be done on windows to create a Linux usable geotiff?? I would like to spend some time to describe features. That's what I love about ArcGIS. You're clicking in a field and the help immediately gives an explanation, what to enter in there. In the "buffer" function, f.e. nobody knows if you need to enter meters oder kilometers or degrees (FYI meters for metric projections). ___ Qgis-user mailing list Qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org List info: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user Unsubscribe: https://lists.osgeo.org/mailman/listinfo/qgis-user
[Qgis-user] Processing documentaton and help
Hi I have been testing building models in processing and I have found a few areas where we could improve the help and documentation: - In the list of tools, most of the tools only show their name, while some (GRASS) also show a description of the tool in the list. I would prefer if only the names are listed and that the description is shown in a separate window. That would make the interfae cleaner. - Most tools seem to lack description in the help tab. Are there any guidelines on what must be included in this tab? Is it up the the supplier of the tool or can others help to create and improve the documentation as well? - Is there a collection of well structured and documented models somewhere? That would help users get up to speed and learn best practice. I think that this should be incuded when downloading QGIS or available on qgis.org. [Qgis-user] How-to: add spatial reference to SQLite DBs
Hi there. I'm new to this mailing list, so let me give some knowledge from my work in QGIS (I don't want to take only, hehe). Maybe it helps someone or leads to a nice discussion, how to make it even better. Often, it's more useful to store geodata in small SQLite. Sure, it doesn't have all the geo-functions or even a spatial index, like SpatiaLite or Geopackage does. But SQLite is a very lightweight way to store and transmit information via E-Mail. You can store multiple layers and ... argh, you know what I'm talking about. A very annoying problem I had with QGIS is that it doesn't add the correct information about CRS/SRS (the coordinate system being used) to the SQLite file. The problem results into QGIS complaining about a missing CRS/SRS on re-opening at file and forces it to be EPSG:4326. That's good for OpenStreetMap data, but not really usefull for anything else. To add the missing CRS/SRS, keep in mind to store metadata in QGIS and select "SQLite" as export format (not "SpatiaLite"!). In the following example, I'll set SRID to 3035 used in Europe for maps about statistics: 1. Open the SQLite file, f.e. with sqlite3: # sqlite3 database.sqlite 2. Add the information about spatial reference to the geometry column (table is "demo_data"): # UPDATE geometry_columns SET srid = 3035 WHERE table = 'demo_data'; 3. Add the definition of the spatial reference: [left out here] You can look up the string for spatial reference, f.e. on this website: http://spatialreference.org/ref/epsg/3035/postgis/ But this is important: 1. Remove "proj4text," from the bracketed part and remove "+proj=..." from the second one. 2. make the first number of the second bracketed part be equal to your EPSG-code, f.e. "3035". So the beginning should look like: # INSERT INTO spatial_ref_sys (srid, auth_name, auth_srid, srtext) VALUES (3035, 'epsg', 3035, I hope this helps other people with the same problem. Hmm are you sure we don't do this already? I suspect we do. Each provider can handle the sorting, giving to it by QgsFeatureRequest, and hand the results back to the caller.
