Thank you for the follow up, Nicolas, I’ll spend a little more time on learning to insert that ID column. I tried the Convert to Geopackage and then to TAB files, but that was not satisfactory. Sounds like your database table has a not-null constraint on this MI_PRINX attribute, which QGIS is detecting. That's what the orange x represents -- the attribute value isn't valid for the layer. [Qgis-user] Identifier Tool in QGIS 3.22 - more documentation?
Hi, I'm struggling a little with some behaviour changes when I edit in the Pop-up box using the Identifier Tool in QGIS 3.22. I have read the information at https://docs.qgis.org/3.22/en/docs/user_manual/introduction/general_tools.html#identify but that doesn't answer my questions. Is there anywhere else I can read to find out more? Specifically, I want to know what has changed in regard to editing in the pop-up box. [Qgis-user] Index attribute no longer updated automatically
Hi, Another QGIS 3.22.3 question. I have layers that come from a MSSQL database. Those tables were loaded into SQL using Easy Loader (I know, shh!) so they have the MI_PRINX attribute. In past versions of QGIS, this MI_PRINX attribute was updated automatically when a new feature is saved in a layer. That has stopped in 3.22. In my settings when a new feature is created, the default behaviour of Suppress attribute from pop-up after feature creation is not ticked, so a new feature created does open a pop-up box. The attribute for MI_PRINX is Orange and there is a small orange x on the right hand side. If I turn that off (put a tick in the box to suppress the pop-up) then the feature is created and the MI_PRINX value is updated. So the frustrating behaviour only happens with the pop-up box. But that means that I have to open the attribute table, find the feature etc. Is there a way to return the 'old' behaviour to the pop-up box? Thanks Ramon for trying to answer, Yes, what you describe is what has happened in the past. A lot of our data is sent to us in Mid/Mif format and it was this that I was trying to load yesterday when the behaviour changed. I was still able to load shape files and geopackages. [Qgis-user] Visibility of items in SQL Database
Hi, I have a situation where I have two SQL databases and I have to move data from one to the other. Always the same direction from DB1 to DB2 My issue is that the items show in some tables in DB1 but do not display in QGIS. I can select from the table, but I can't select items on the QGIS canvas I can cut and paste from DB1 to DB2 and the items display in DB2. I can manually create an item in an affected table in DB1 and it will display. When I hover with my Add [polygon/line/point] tool, the square to show where the vertices (for snapping) are displayed as I move my cursor over them. When I run the Validate Geometry tool, the results are that I have valid geometry and those layers are displayed. In SQL server manager I can see the spatial results for those tables in DB1. Projections are the same for each DB There are no Layer Scale Visibility settings in play for either DB It does not affect all tables in DB1. Can anyone suggest some further troubleshooting strategies? [Qgis-user] Draw Rectangle from three points - can it include distance?
Hi, I need to create thousands of polygons for a layer. Sadly, they will all be hand drawn. The Draw Rectangle From Three Points is fabulous, but I was wondering if there was a way that I could easily see the measurements of the rectangle as I draw using that tool? Or is there another tool or method I could use? Re: [Qgis-user] MS SQL Server, multi users and QGIS v3+
Hi Sunil, We capture asset data for a local council. There are 27 tables in the database representing each asset category. We have times when the demand for the import is higher eg at the end of the calendar year and at the end of the financial year. When it is busy, we can be adding 2-3000 assets per week. Some of the tables already contain 45 000+ assets. We have no alternatives to software. IT won’t allow it. Hi Nyall, I've had good support ideas from you before so I knew that I untick all plugins before I asked for more assistance. Sadly, it has not made any difference. And, to clarify, each user has their own machine, their own installation of QGIS and their own version of the Project file all pointing at the one database with all the tables. Re: [Qgis-user] MS SQL Server, multi users and QGIS v3+
Hi Chris, Thanks for your reply. I don’t have any transparency on the config of our network so I can’t answer that. It is possible that my frustration peaks in the afternoon and it is possible that is a red herring. Each user has a similar project that contains tables in a SQL database. We need to add and edit items in these tables but struggle when more than one person is editing in the same table. What I do know is that the refresh – or my ability to edit and save data - in the attribute table slows down when multiple users are editing the same table. And I know that this behaviour has become worse now that we are all working from home and have the added ‘hops’ in the network created by our home Wi-Fi and VPN. Our workaround today will be to try to make sure that only one person is in a particular table at a time. Johanna, I'm struggling to understand your configuration here. Are you working via some kind of remote desktop software? It sounds like it. What is your theory as to why response time is worse in the afternoon? Is your connection to your office being overloaded? Is your office's connection to the cloud database also being overloaded? Do your IT support people have any thoughts on why response is worse in the afternoon? The reason I'm keying on this is that one possibility is that your network infrastructure is slightly insufficient for the morning load and completely insufficient for the afternoon load. On the contrary, if your database is starved of resources, why is it worse now than when you were working from the office? Again your IT people should be able to look at log info or otherwise instrument your server to find out if it's the problem (having suggested this I admit I wouldn't use SQL Server and know nothing about tuning it). Can you run a different configuration, say with QGIS on your home computer and some kind of database proxy in your office, or even a direct connection to the cloud database (assuming I've guessed your configuration correctly)? Users love to blame the software. That’s what they are interacting with, but I don’t believe that it is all QGIS’ problem. I’d prefer to blame a database that appears to not respond well to a multi user environment. I'd be inclined to blame the network first, since that's what it sounds like has changed. Re: [Qgis-user] Export to DXF question
Thanks for the prompt reply Nyall, I have discovered that the scale option is also a factor. The default was 1:1000 or something like that. When I changed it to 1:500 my export is looking much better. I have still to test more, so I will test with the Mtext option unchecked as well. I'll answer my question on Stack Exchange when I have worked it out. Johanna Botman Asset & GIS Officer | Melton City Council Have you checked whether changing the output scale helps here? There's probably label collisions preventing the other parcels being labelled. Alternatively you could set "show all labels" for the parcel layer to force all labels to be shown, even if they overlap. > When I open the DXF in AutoCAD I can select those 30 labels but cannot change > the size of the font. That's likely because you're using the mtext option. Try unchecking that setting. [Qgis-user] Export to DXF question
Hi, I am trying to use the Export to DXF function in QGIS 3.2 without satisfaction. The layer that I want to export is a layer of polygons representing a Property layer. I want to export the House number as a label associated with each polygon. I tick the Export with Mtext box - after making sure that my layer is labelled with the attribute that I want. I select that I want my layer symbology and I choose my required attribute from the Output Layer Attribute. Only 30 of the 300 or so labels are exported to the DXF file. When I open the DXF in AutoCAD I can select those 30 labels but cannot change the size of the font. What do I need to do to make sure that I have all the labels for my layer? I asked the question on GIS Stack Exchange last week without much luck in obtaining an answer. [Qgis-user] Which layers are locked in Print Composer?
Hi, How can I find out which layers I have locked for a map in Print Composer? I have a project that has three composer maps - each showing a variation of the data sets in the project. I have locked the layers for each map. When I come back to the project and want to work on Composer 1, for instance, is there a way that I can find out which layers I have on that map? I want to know so that I can easily find which layers to edit when my client wants symbology changes for one composer and not the other two. Does that make sense? Hi, I have a layer of suburbs and I style them using the Categorise function so that they are all different colours. There are 43 of them. By default they are then all selected to show on my canvas. Is there a way that I can deselect them all at once and then reselect them all? I can only see that I have to click each check box (43 times). Re: [Qgis-user] Mini dump when adding SQL layers QGIS 2.18.8
Thanks Martin, for getting back to me. I have isolated that it this behaviour occurs when I load a layer from the browser window. If I add it through the Layer | Add New Layer menu items I don't have a problem. So that confirms what you are saying. A shame, I like being able to drag and drop layers onto my projects. I'll have to investigate updating to the latest version. Are you adding the layers from the browser window or the add layer menu? Are you using a named ODBC DSN or putting the SQL Server Host details directly into QGIS? I had mini dumps when I was using named ODBC connections. I'm afraid the only thing I can suggest, if you haven't already tried, is to try switching the way you are connecting and adding the layers. [Qgis-user] Fail to commit changes to SQL database
I'm working on a [road] line layer and changing the geometry so that it matches the aerial image. I can make some changes and save them, but then suddenly I can't save anymore changes. In the yellow line at the top of the canvas it says Commit Errors: Could not commit changes to layer [road]. When I click the 'show more' it simply says 'Errors: ERROR: [x] geometries not changed' I can shut QGIS down and restart it. Then I still cannot change that last geometry that caused the issue, but I can change others until I get that message again. I have rebooted my machine and I made a little more progress but still come up against the error. My research in stack exchange yielded nothing in relation to SQL server, but I asked our IT to have a look at the logs anyway. They said there was nothing in the SQL logs either. I also have no experience with it and can't help. GRASS is different - it's a general purpose GIS and should work well with QGIS. What are you struggling with regarding GRASS? - The other question is: are you (I mean your Windows user account) a long-time QGIS user who upgraded from older versions? If yes, it can mean that some "out-of-the-box" settings don't apply, since you already have settings and they won't get overwritten (people wouldn't like that). So to judge things, it may be interesting to try from a new Windows user account and test if things work fine for a new and clean user account. You could then compare the settings and copy them over to the production user who upgraded from older QGIS. Re: [Qgis-user] issues with Processing Options
Hi Andreas, Thank you for your response, and I think that your 'other' question is valid. I will see what I can do about that. But my other point is that there is very little documentation about what settings 'should' be applied to enable these providers. That makes it hard for users who want to get on with their work if they have to spend hours researching and experimenting. And, I've been around for long enough to know that I shouldn't whinge without thinking about volunteering to do that work myself. I am not in a position to raise my hand for that just yet. But you may see that before the end of the year. ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 From: "Neumann, Andreas" <a.neum...@carto.net> To: Johanna Botman <joha...@jbotman.com> Cc: 'Johanna Botman' <johanna.bot...@griffith.nsw.gov.au>, qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org Date: 20/07/2016 07:34 PM Subject:RE: [Qgis-user] issues with Processing Options Hi Johanna, Orfeo Toolbox (photogrammetry software) is quite specialized and is not part of the standard QGIS distribution. [Qgis-user] What colour settings can I control when I export to PDF?
Hi, I've produced a map that now needs to be commercially printed. I sent them a PDF exported from QGIS 2.14.1. The proof the printer has supplied has the black (for street names) REALLY dark and bold. They tell me that it is because the export has converted my RGB values to CMYK and that therefore they are combining four colours to make black and it is then 'bold'. [Qgis-user] Label display at disappearing at different resolution
I'm making an A3 size map of my town where every street needs to be labelled. And I need to output to a vector PDF. I have 'Show all labels for this layer (including colliding labels)' ticked I do not have 'Discourage labels from covering features' ticked. I have a rule for font size that says if a street is shorter than 100m then use a smaller font size. This helped to get a lot of smaller labels on the map, but does not get everything. When I zoom in on my canvas, I can see the labels, but when I zoom back to see the whole map, some of the labels disappear. They don't all appear on the PDF either - but the ones that do not appear aren't always the same as the ones that don't show on my canvas. Can someone suggest something that I can do (aside from telling the client that their request is unrealistic?) ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 Please consider the environment before printing this email notice. [Qgis-user] Loading issues with project file in QGIS 2.4 (64 bit)
One of my users is having *fun and games* with a project file which hangs and is unresponsive. This project is one where the user drags and drops a .gml file onto the canvas to produce a map of a specific area. I don't want to update her to a later version because 2.4 is the last version to automatically update the gml file to the legend. The Auto Update function in later versions updates all the layers and that is one step too far for this user. When my user opens the file, according to IT, it sits for a while allocating memory and then finally opens the layers that are needed. But once the map has been produced, the original gml file removed and another added for the second map, QGIS becomes Not Responding. I blame the network, but IT tell me it is the nature of open source software. Re: [Qgis-user] Local Government for QGIS
I, too, work for local government - in New South Wales (Australia). We were an exclusively MapInfo shop until I came along. Not that I can claim the move to QGIS ... but adding me to the staff meant that the opportunity was there to explore open source software and how it would fit into Council's IT and GIS. There are hiccups, of course, but I find QGIS to be as robust as MapInfo, sometimes better and sometimes not as good. I think, though, that this can be said of any software comparisons. Our reasons for changing were as the OP described - an unwillingness to be locked into proprietary formats and expensive licensing agreements. We may not be on QGIS forever, either. We are open minded enough to examine the alternatives as they present themselves and take advantage of opportunities as they arise. While we are being asked to do more with less resources, we see this as the most appropriate course at this time. We have the support of consultants who know and understand QGIS and who are partners with enterprises who fund and develop changes and improvements with QGIS. And personally, I have found the help and support available through this mail list to be invaluable. Through this mail list I have been able to deal directly with the developer of a particular component of QGIS and had it fixed in the nightly build. ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 Please consider the environment before printing this email notice. [Qgis-user] Updating the legend an legend items in 2.6.1
I have a project that I use to create a map from a location specified in a .gml file. I can get 10, 20 or 30 of these each day and want to make the process as automated as possible. I click and drag the .gml file onto the map canvas, right click the new layer, zoom to the extent, then go to the composer, match the composer to map canvas extent and produce my map. In the legend, I do not want to show all the items in each layer on my canvas. So I turn off the Auto Update option and make my changes. In 2.4 and previous versions, when I dragged the .gml file onto my map canvas, the legend would automatically update with that layer, but now it doesn't. I have to add that layer myself. It seems to me that the Auto Update check box will update all items in all layers and then I have to delete those items and layers I do not want to show. The other option there is the Update All button - but that appears to do the same thing ... that is, update all the items in my layers and all the layers in my project.. It's not a great ask, in the scheme of things, to manually add the new layer, but it is a step that, given that it was automatic in previous versions, I'd prefer not to have to perform. Hi again, I'm still going nowhere quite rapidly on this question. I persuaded our IT folk to follow Donovan's instructions (below) but no joy. Can anyone tell me what file path they have if they are using Win 7 64 bit? ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 Hey Johanna, I just got OTB working today. Here's what I did, because I did notice that it isn't installed through the Stand Alone QGIS installer or the 64bit OSGeo4W packager. Download both: (1) otb-bin and (2) otb-python tar.bz2 files from http://orfeo-toolbox.org/packages/nightly/latest These are nightly builds, but the only place I've found with current Windows files needed for processing toolbox. So you can come back and get them everyday if you like =P They both contain a tar file after you first extract them. Extract the contents of those tar files (you should see folders like apps, bin, etc) to your QGIS directory so they merge with your existing apps, bin and etc folders. If you installed with OSGeo4W, you simply drop them into the OSGeo4W folder, for example. Now you should be able to simply activate the OTB tools in the providers config window for the processing toolbox without having to specify a path to the OTB libs and such. They should be found automatically. Donovan Please consider the environment before printing this email notice. Re: [Qgis-user] Customising QGIS DuFour install - Windows
Thanks for the answer Jonathan, but I don't believe this answers my question. If I change the font setting under Settings | Options | General, it also changes ALL the fonts for the GUI. I only want to be able to change the default font for the composer for a particular project. I have been told that I can edit the project file in a text editor and change all font instances to the font that I want. But I'm not happy with that solution either because it would mean completing the project and then changing everything. I would prefer to be able to see what my layout looks like as I am creating it. Font size and font weight play a big part in the look and feel of a map. If I changed the font in the project file, I'd probably have to revisit all my design decisions as well. ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 From: Jonathan Moules jonathanmou...@warwickshire.gov.uk To: johanna.bot...@griffith.nsw.gov.au, Cc: qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org qgis-user@lists.osgeo.org Date: 16/10/2013 12:37 AM Subject:Re: [Qgis-user] Customising QGIS DuFour install - Windows Hi Johanna, In Settings - Options, under the General tab you can set the application font, including size. This seems to carry over to Composer, or does for me at least. The second point sounds like a bug - I'd suggest reporting it to the bug tracker with examples. Re: [Qgis-user] Finding 'lost' plugins?
Thanks for that info, Matt I've looked at some other installations in my office and they look right. So there's a problem with mine. I'm waiting for my IT people to get a chance to reinstall for me. I was planning to post back with the results. ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 Please consider the environment before printing this email notice. [Qgis-user] Finding 'lost' plugins?
My installation of QGIS 2.0 has 'http://plugins.qgis.org/plugins/plugins.xml' as the location setting for the plug-in repository, but not all the plugins I want are visible to me. I am missing some basic ones like GRASS, fTools, Gdal Tools and Sextante. I'm on Windows XP. Where should that location setting be pointing? Or why can't I see the plugins that I'm looking for? ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 Please consider the environment before printing this email notice. [Qgis-user] Customising QGIS DuFour install - Windows
There are two things that I'd like to do to customise my installation of QGIS v2. 1. I'd like to be able to set a different default font in Composer. Perhaps its a girlie thing, but MS Shell Dlg 2 just doesn't do it for me and I find the default font size bigger than I need it to be. 2. The little screen tip boxes that show up when I hover over an icon are too small for the whole text in the tip. How can I make those bigger? (The boxes, not the text) Can anyone help? ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 Please consider the environment before printing this email notice. [Qgis-user] Password for Polygoniser plug-in zip file
Hi, I'm trying to install the Polygoniser plug-in to use with my QGIS v1.9 Master. The plug-in manager does not find it automatically because it is, by default, looking for version 2 plugins. So I downloaded the .zip file and planned to install it in the plugins directory. But the zipped archive is asking for a password. I'm hopeless at guessing beyond 'password' and 'qgis' and don't have time to muck around. Can anyone help? ___ Johanna Botman GIS / Assets Officer Griffith City Council Ph: 02 6962 8168 Please consider the environment before printing this email notice. I got it from the site and then under the creator's name. But I guess it doesn't matter if it is useless to me anyway. it is possible (just unzip it in the dir), but not encouraged. why not using the installer? all the best.
