[Ql-Users] Unsure on how to play inform adventure files on the QL

2010-12-12 Thread peet vanpeebles
Hello there, has anyone had any luck playing infocom text adventures on the QL?
There is a program on Dilwyn's
website: http://www.dilwyn.me.uk/games/infocom.zip I've tried all kinds of
commands to get it away but I just get a bad parameter error. I've set the
program and data directories, thanks Dilwyn :) but that didn't make much
difference. I'm using a standard QL with a trump card and twin floppies.
Many thanks,
Peter

Thanks for the reply but I've tried that and other variations to no success :(
I've tried including the drive names and all kinds but I just get an error with
bad parameter. The file has been unzipped on my QL too.

The main parts of the program are:
   Inform - compiles z-code into a game.
zip    - takes a compiled game and plays it.

If you have a game file (curses_dat) in the same directory as the zip
executable, then to have zip read the curses_dat file and play it, the command
line is:

exec zip;"curses_dat"

This will open a new window and start the game.  Zip is able to read games that
were built on other platforms ( but only games using zcode versions 3 & 5).

I wrote a review for this many years ago for IQLR and luckily it was still on a
hard drive.

Well, I tried! The responses from the site are abysmally slow this
morning I'm afraid, I'll try again later. I tried to register and all I
got was "waiting for a response from www.qlforum.co.uk" :-(

Anyway, best of luck with this, I started a forum a while back, and
after a mad rush of about 7 posts, it simply died. People seem to prefer
this list to other forms of communication.

However, it has to be said, your forum looks far far better them mine
ever did!

Good luck.

Cheers,
Norman.

I've managed to log on to the site (which looks good) , slightly slowly.
However, the first e-mail giving notice of the site did not come through to my
Apple MAC though it was in  google mail. I only knew about the site by reading
replies to the original.

More oddly perhaps, is that I don't get a copy from the list of e-mails I send
to the list unless I copy them to myself.

Hmm!

Hmmm, having tried twice to register now, I can't seem to get the confirmation
email at all. It's not ended up in the spam folder. Trouble is, Orange often
seem to stop some emails and you are none the wiser, plus they have no user
control (AFAIK) to adjust. Rob or Pete, could you have a look on the admin site
to see if you can find what happened? If you need to know my username details
etc I'll email them privately to one of you.

I'll try registering from another email address, perhaps, or try using Firefox
in case my IE8 problems this moerning (see below) had anything to do with it.

As for the comments about the internet being slow, etc, my Internet Exploder
has been doing some unusual tricks this morning - anyone know what's going
wrong? Every time I try to connect to a site it can't find, it suddenly claims
there's no wireless link to the router and throws me offline, instead of
throwing up a '404' or such page not found error message. I have to turn off
the wireless connection and turn it back on to recover. It's obviously down to
Internet Explorer (IE8), as the same thing doesn't happen on Firefox. Sadly,
Firefox doesn't work on some websites I visit from time to time, like Thierry's
QL site (gets to the home page OK then refuses to connect when I click on the
"click to enter" link).

Not my day for being around PCs I guess :-(

Now I know why George said "close the window AFTER you first opened it to throw
out the PC". Having just had new double glazing here, I guess that's sensible
advice for me...

Yes, indeed his subject was much too wide. But the fact that he didn't
recall/know where Tim Berners-Lee worked while inventing HTML and who the
British designer is who works at Apple is very poor for a computer dinosaur

many years ago.

Hi all,

what would be your favorite style for an SD/MMC card "harddisk" for the
QL?

I can _not_ promise to really make a piece of hardware available, but it
would be nice to know, just in case...

A) External interface, plugs into parallel port of SuperGoldCard

Pro:
- Interface also works on Q40 and Q60
- QL Case doesn't need to be openened
- Easy reconnect from one machine to another
- Hot-plugging might work
- ROM-Port remains usable
Con:
- Slow data transfer through parallel port handshake lines

B) External interface, plugs into QL ROM port

Pro:
- QL Case doesn't need to be openened
- Faster data transfer
- Onboard Driver ROM
- Works on QL without GoldCard / SuperGoldCard
Con:
- ROM-Port occupied
- Complex hardware

C) Internal interface, plugs into CPU socket

Pro:
- Fastest data transfer
- ROM-Port remains usable
Con:
- QL Case needs to be openened
- Only GoldCard/SuperGoldCard machines

D) Internal interface, replacing a microdrive(!)

Can easily be bolted inside the case, after a microdrive was removed
Plugs into CPU socket or maybe other place

Pro:
- SD/MMC-card can be plugged in like a cartridge
- Looks cool
- Very "QL-style"
- ROM-Port remains usable
Con:
- QL Case needs to be openened

All the best,
Peter

Never planned to support an unexpanded QL yet. That would take away the
option to easily use the CPU socket. The 68008 has capacitors soldered on
it, so a sandwich solution with the 68008 would pile up too high.

The German and US build (Korea I think)and others with 9D serial ports do. This
also comes with a whole raft of other EMI mods.  The vast majority, including
all UK builds, don't have these capacitors.
I would have thought they could be removed with little problem.

I need to ask a question which is slightly off-topic here.

Does anyone use BBC iPlayer on the same PC as the BBC iPlayer?

I just can't get it to download or install on this while QPC is running, or
even in the same session after I shut down QPC. Anyone know why? (the PC is
Windows XP Pro with SP3, 1.4GHz processor, 1GB RAM))

We also tried it on the notebook with Windows 7 Starter. It's just gone into a
please wait loop for the last half hour, I don't know how long iPlayer download
should take? QPC had been in use on that too.

And further, does anyone have experience of it on a slow broadband - in theory
we pay for "up to 8mbs" from Orange. It's never better than 2mbs (in fact BT
say that's the best we can hope for here, irrespective of what Orange say).
Last time I had iPlayer working, it was very jerky, pausing every few seconds,
totally unusable, so I removed it. Anyone with experience of it on 2mb/s able
to say if it should work at that speed? The BBC website has a hell of a lot of
"how good and essential this is" but no useful help whatsoever.

This is driving me up the wall at the moment because I've got a visitor and we
are trying together to see if we can get it to work. Although it's a bit off
topic, I know I'll get a quicker and more sensible answer here.

I think what is needed is some kind of QL PR group to bombard retro computing
and retrogaming websites and magazines etc with articles and information about
the QL. With permissions they could update old articles with screenshots etc
and use those as a staring point along with new material later on. Anything to
get the word out onto the street.

A new gold card project would be lovely for new users and people wanting a
spare. The last one on ebay sold untested for over £190!

As for the lack of users, the QL scene needs to organise a PR group to
advertise the QL this would attract new users which would improve the scene for
everyone.

Pancake motors are a new and improved electric motor design. I think the
trouble with Sir Clive is that he is very city based and believes in urban
transport, something to take you from your apartment to the office. When new
laws regulating traditional traffic come into effect I can see these taking off
in a big way.

The C5 is actually a very well built and well designed bit of kit it was just
unsuited to the roads and attitudes at the time which are still around today
but fading. Cycle paths and car free zones are getting more common so the C5's
time will come, just around 30 years too late :P

To be fair Apple products have a had a checkered reliability as well. I've
fixed a number of ibooks. Not mention the faults with older ipods or phones
with no signal. Or the top of range liquid cooled G5s that were prone to
leaking. Ebay is awash with spares or repair Apple equipment. Sir Clive made
some shonky stuff in his time but never charged 1000s. If you pay a few
thousand for a computer I'd expect more than a 1 year warranty.

They are nice to use and I own a few myself but I think it's more about the
branding, image and selling a lifestyle.

No, no, no, no and again, no!

Next time you are in WH Smiths, don't stand in front of the magazine rack
reading the damned things, either buy one and get out of the way or just get
out of the way. It's a shop - you buy stuff - not a library - you borrow stuff.

eRant over! ;-)

I don't mind people having a quick look through - that's what I do to see if an
article justifies the cost - but I object to people getting a free read and
then leaving a "second hand" magazine for someone else to pay full price for.
It's bloody dishonest in my opinion. I'd go so far as to say that it's almost
like theft.

I hate going in to WH Smiths to get a comic (Linux, Electronics, Science etc)
because I can't get near the racks for a crowd of cheap skates reading the
magazines in the aisles. Bloody irritating.

My wife used to work in WH Smiths on a Saturday and her job was to wander
around the store telling people to stop reading the magazines and either buy
one or foff!

Durham WH Smiths in the market place used to be terrible for that, on a
Saturday morning there would be rows of people reading the magazines(probably
while their other half was doing the shopping) Very annoying, I don't buy
magazines at all now apart from the odd mini or classic car one. I remember my
mate stating loudly "It's like a BLOODY library in here, cheapskates!" and he
got some right mucky glares.

Those costs increases are diabolical. If the post office aka Royal Mail wants

There's a corruption in the phpbb_sessions table that needs to be fixed.

I think that was me! :( I had issues with a surge protector where you got a
funny lined screen on start up which then went away once the QL was reset from
the reset button. It worked fine but never on the first power on. When using a
none surge protected extension it worked fine first time.

I've worked in a school(none teaching) for the last 11 years or so and only had
3 to 4 days off due to snow in all that time. I think the main trouble is that
most teachers live many miles away from the school while most pupils can walk
in, which would leave a building full of unsupervised kids. I think but I'm not
sure in that a school has to have a minimum amount of teachers in per pupils in
school.

On a personal note I'm terrible at thinking of things to write about so maybe
people thinking up topics would be good. The hardest bit for me is just to

Hi,

I hope to offer three presentations, two of my software projects and
one hardware:

* QLPUI: GUI with modern look & feel, themes, proportional fonts,
and other features not yet available on the QL. Runs completely
without Pointer Environment.

* QLwIP: Native ethernet and TCP/IP: Ethernet connectivity,
webserver, email, browser and file transfer without emulation.

* Q68: Compact and modern QL compatible mainboard, running QDOS
Classic and Minerva

While each of the projects might in some way be of fundamental
interest, the QLis30 website rightfully asks to keep presentations
short.

Any input where I should set the priorities?

All the best

That's a shame, but I am sure if you make some stock someone will sell
them on your behalf :)

Hi to all at QL ML LIST!

I’m Simon from Italy and I’ve started 2 years ago an Italian QL preservation
program:

https://sinclairql.wordpress.com

&

http://www.hunggartorino.it/ql/ql-microdrive-software-preservation/

Differently from Rich’s preservation (as we collaborate naturally) we are
attempting to preserve all originals MD’s and Floppies in his original format.

In particular with Daniele Terdina we have now a new mDump version (mDump 2)
that can dump in less than 3 minutes an MD with a 100% accuracy.

So in 2 years we have more than 500 working tiltes perfectly restored, as you
can see in the Italian page (with links for the list, the mDump 2 download and
more).

Me and Massimo Raffaele are searching people that can send us his MD’s and
Floppies (also BK versions) for make a 100% perfect dump of it.

We will offer a free courier arrangement and return and a free responge too (we
dump all in max 15 days).

Naturally all that will be send to us and 100% dumped will be available as a
personl dump to all

If someone would like to collaborate with us please write me a mail:

simone.voltol...@tin.it

All the material will be stored and checked by Rich Mellor and we will publish
all the FREE stuff before the project will finish.

I hope that someone can help us and join our big adventure.

Best regards

— Simone Voltolini

[Ql-Users] New QL Adventure Game Released

2020-01-09 Thread peet vanpeebles via Ql-Users
Here is my completed game (at last!) For you all to enjoy for free, I've also
included the source files, design manual, my working notes, and box art, and
the animated intro! The full pack can be downloaded at :
http://www.zen70509.zen.co.uk/198-adventure.zip
It was created using ACT and took me years!
I've decided to try and make this, a complete a package as possible. It's
bundled with the following:
The original game, with title screen, border and boot file.
The animated intro as a gif file, and all the individual slides as png files.
It was my intention to convert each png to an scr file, and make a superbasic
animated intro to start before the main game. (Similar to the Christmas I made
some years back) I wasn't sure if I'd manage this on an stock 128k QL.
The box art design as png files, with front, rear, and side stickers. (If
anyone does make the boxes, please send me one!)
The box manual as a leaflet, this was originally to be A5 with two copies
printed back to back on an A4 sheet.
The original source code as ACT build files are all included, so you can build
your own version of the game, or edit my modules for use on your own games if
you have ACT (this would be great).
A huge PDF design document detailing the whole game in detail, this was built
up over a number of years. LOADS OF SPOILERS!
JPG photo images of my working notes, the hand written ones I used as I code
the game in ACT. Excuse the hand writing. LOADS OF SPOILERS!
I hope you all enjoy it,
Cheers

I'm not 100%, but I could have sworn a few people have had the game running on
SMSQ/E. Have you tried the img disc image? You can also exec the 198ad
directly, bypassing the boot file all together. I'll see if I can ask around
for some help :)

Hi Pete, Just tried out your game using Qemulator with SMSQ/E, it fails
with a bad parameter at line 90? Think it's the "EXEC_W" command. Is
there any way around this ?

Thank you Peter. I love text adventures.

I'm trying it with SMSQmulator.

That makes both of us :D I'm glad you got it up and running! :)

Hello Pete. Update ... I have managed to get your game working ! I
realised I had to use the discImage file after a lot of head-scratching
on how to actually use the image. It works perfectly with QeMulator & JS
ROM, and with SMSQmulator with SMSQE, apart from the borders screwing
up. It was trying to use QPC where I came unstuck! I believe line 90 is
where the EXEC was called, and there is no EXEC there, probably headers
were wiped somewhere along the line.

thanks ... Brian Kemmett (very much a novice)
