Having just bought a Freeview Digibox I've run into a slight problem
which is worth mentioning here in case it helps anyone with similar
problems with video signals. Answers off list if you think it's too
far unconnected to QL
matters.

The Freeview digital TV decoder only has a SCART output (no UHF/RF
aeriel output). Although my video and TV have SCART sockets, it turns
out that the one on the video is output only, so I can't record from
the
Freeview system nor view it via the TV tuner, bit of a pity given the
shifts I work. (The video can ONLY record from UHF aerial socket, it
has no composite video input either, cheap Tesco £70 video!)

The obvious answer to all this is would be some form of RGB to UHF
modulator to connect SCART socket video output to a standard aerial
socket for a UHF TV. Does anyone know if such devices are available?
If they are, they'd be ideal for connecting computer RGB outputs to TV
sets, for example.

had similar problems ( so I thought ) fitting vcr and sky box to new

It has suddenly become very quiet on the QL-users list - nothing to
read for
four days now. Has everyone logged off for Christmas? Here's a little
something to occupy your minds and time between the season's
festivities:

Having purchased Launchpad and QWord as well as updated my SMSQ/E and
QPac2,
my system does not run as well as it used to. The basic principles
have
remained unchanged since I used two Aurora/SGC/QuBide machines at work
and
in order to keep all the database files (.dbf) up to date, these two
machines were networked across the office - slow but very reliable I
found.

I have always started off with the obligatory boot file in which I
LRESPR
just about every toolkit etc imaginable and set up my ALTKEYs etc. I
then
provide the option of installing SMSQ - the Accounts package 'Cash
Trader'
would not run under SMSQ - hence the reason for giving the option. At
the
end of the boot programme, I EXed a QLiberated SuperBASIC programme
called
GENERAL_MENU_obj which includes a clock correction prog and then a
menu to
provide one of five options plus a 'Return to SuperBASIC' from which I
could
do all the things a basic machine could do, or something specific like
'Family Trees' - Genealogy - or 'Scouting'. Having retired 4 years
ago, I
have now decided to get rid of all the 'Company System' stuff and
substitute
all the Quanta stuff I have either inherited or have written during
the last
couple of years - at present QUANTA runs from floppies only. Over
the last
few years - gosh, how time flies once one has retired! - I have made
various
half hearted attempts to get all my QL stuff installed on the PC
running
QPC2 - now have 3V11 installed - only to find that any reference to
networking (nfs_use etc) causes an error. So, the whole thing needs
sorting
 out.

Where do I start? (From the beginning! - boot)?

How do I know which toolkits and extensions are required for which
programmes and which programmes load their own extensions? (Could this
cause
duplicate entries if the same toolkit is loaded twice, or use up
unnecessary
memory?) Is there any way of uninstalling an extension once loaded?

Since SMSQ causes a complete reset when loaded, should I be loading
toolkits
after SMSQ or before (in case I want to use QDOS) or both ('cos if
it's all
lost when SMSQ loads it would only be loaded once anyway)?

Has anyone got any pearls of wisdom to offer?

Have a GREAT Christmas everyone and happy QLing in 2004

 John Gilpin.

Time to consider how many of these extentions you need on a regular
basis and have possibly a boot that loads smsqe and then offers you the
choice of running one of two or three alternative configuration of
extentions depending on what your going to do in that session, from
there it would be possible to load in other extentions should you decide
you need them
It should be easy enough to avoid duplication of extentions buy testing
for them in basic ( write procedures to load extentions and report
already loaded should that be the case

Ah if only I had time to practise what I preach.

Merry christmes to all

 Hi Jerome,

  No, it never leak!
That bit was a joke - honest

Oh yes it does leak, trouble is you guys obviously have not heard of the
smoke theory

!The Smoke Theory of Electric Circuits

Electrical Theory by Joseph Lucas

Positive ground depends upon proper circuit functioning, the
transmission of negative ions by retention of the visible spectral
manifestation known as smoke. Smoke is the thing that makes electrical
circuits work; we know this to be true because every time one lets the
smoke out of the electrical system, it stops working. This can be
verified repeatedly through empirical testing.

When, for example, the smoke escapes from an electrical component (i.e.,
say, a Lucas voltage regulator), it will be observed that the component
stops working. The function of the wire harness is to carry the smoke
from one device to another; when the wire harness springs a leak, and
lets all the smoke out of the system, nothing works afterwards. Starter
motors were frowned upon in British Automobiles for some time, largely
because they consume large quantities of smoke, requiring very large
wires.

It has been noted that Lucas components are possibly more prone to
electrical leakage than Bosch or generic Japanese electrics. Experts
point out that this is because Lucas is British and all things British
leak. British engines leak oil, shock absorbers, hydraulic forks and
disk brakes leak fluid, British tyres leak air and the British defense
establishment leaks secrets...so, naturally, British electrics leak
smoke.

Author Unknown

Subject: SMOKE

When wires smoke, how come the smoke is not the same color as the wire?

This is not completely true. When the smoke is in the wire, it is under
pressure (called voltage). The pressure difference causes the color to
change from the normal color we are used to. Not unlike the blood in our
veins and arteries changing color due to the oxygen content. When the
smoke escapes the wire and is exposed to air, the pressure is released,
and the color reverts back to what we commonly recognize as smoke. The
wire then changes to the color of the smoke that escaped.

I hope this helps you understand.

I would only question the last sentence of that description. It has been
my experience that the wire turns a color directly oposite of the smoke.

Not always true, I think it must depend on the composition of the smoke
in question.

I should have made it a little clearer; the color the wire becomes, is
directly proportional to the escape velocity of the smoke. Higher
velocities generate higher heat. This heat tends to burn the wire and
affect the coloring. The statement was meant to be a generalization,
indicating the fact that the color of the wire does infact change. Sorry
for the miscomunication.

I was speaking of electrcal smoke which is generally white. The spent
smoke casing generally assumes a color somewhat near black after the
smoke leaves.

I can't stand it anymore! If, as you say, light bulbs suck up darkness
and convert it to smoke which is transmitted (via wire) to a power
source for recycling...why do car batteries go dead when lights are left
on? Do car batteries (and flashlight batteries for that matter) have a
limited amount of storage capability? Is it like a hard drive that gets
so full that you have to double-space and then lose all data?

Now you're getting it...

I thought you guys were smarter than this. Of course the battery stores
the smoke. In fact it can store so much smoke that if you open the top
and light a match, the resulting explosion can do serious damage. I'm
sure you are aware that usually where there's smoke there's fire. If you
connect the battery to a charger, the smoke is then returned to the wire
(Remember, a light bulb wont work unless it is connected to a wire
system) for the utility companies to use. Your hard drive analogy is a
very good example.

Our hardware guys might be onto something in their quest for superior
wiring. I have noticed the unique method of of series/parallel wiring
the power strips on our systems seems to prevent the smoke from getting
out of the wires. A Smoke Loop of sorts. In the case of the smoked
workstation recently, you should notice that this was a conventional
single power strip installation.

Since color is percieved by the cone shaped receptors in our eyes, and
cones require more light that their rod shaped counterparts. Is the sky
blue at night?

At night the process including contraction of the pupil is visual purple
by which the eye adapts to conditions of increased illumination when
facing 300 candle power redeflecting devices.

Since there is a spectrum of light that we as humans cannot see, I
support the theory that everything is going up in smoke, we just can't
see it. This may explain why the neighbors dog barks for no

As you may know there has been a serious outbreak of bird flu in the

In one area they had to use asylum seekers to clear up the carcasses
which
was difficult to do legally. To solve the problem the local tax

allowed them to use an NI number and register under the name F

The Society for Hobby Pet Owners (who opposed the slaughter) are now

This version has been converted to the Launchpad default colour scheme

A few funnies when accessing the DOS device of QPC2 have been
addressed, with assistance from Marcel Kilgus, who tells me that he
will consider a small change to the DOS device in future versions to
help me make Q-Trans more robust with the DOS device.

failed

But I installed it on a Q40 at a Computer show, and it did install

There seems to be problems with the type of CDR disk used, maybe it is
errors in the writing of the disk, try looking at the checksums of the
downloaded disk image.

Thanks for the info Derek.

I am indeed installing Shoestring.
I have searched for older versions to try but they seem to have
disappeared from
everywhere... I am not sure if Richard is reading this list any more (or
ql-

As I said in my original mailing, using the ramimg and then running apps
directly from
the cdrom works just fine. Maybe again it's my Q40 as it's an initial
production run
and some things as I have noticed don't go as expected (ie ProWesS that
despite
all info from other Q40i and Q60 users I yet have to install and run).

I used Prowes on it Phoebus, Paragraph worked and Linedesign ( LD in
mode 4 to see the menus )

Other things work like a dream. (Turbo, GWASS, c68 and Q-Word do and
that's what I am really
interested in anyway! Weird thing here is that PQIV DOESN'T run unless
used on
QDOS Classic )

I am not 100% sure but I think Pqiv worked also, are there not two
versions of Qpiv ??

Ah I just remembered you had to put a pause in your boot file and
disable CACHE before loading ProWes, don't know if this was fixed in
later SMSQE or not

Speaking of disks any way to use QubIDE partitions (which are infinitely
more
reliable than QWA ones) and SMSQ/E ones on the same disk? I've tried to

I'm formatting Win1 ( qpc.win ) on my C. drive and note that it formats
ok upto 2000 ( format win1_2000) but format win1_2500 fails.
a qpc.win file of 2000 would more than likely be enough given the
compactness of QL application code, but before I settle for a size could
someone advise me that all is well or am I doing something wrong.

Also am I right in thinking that XXX.win files expand if need be or is
my imagination in charge again.

can eliminated it as the cause.

So far I'm quite pleased with QPC although everything is from floppies

they then work, more investigation needed ( this using high colour

after the
device is the size in Mbytes? Have you actually checked you have tht
much
free space on the hard disk that you are trying to set up the WIN
device on?

Hi Dave
I was using a 2.2 Gb drive on my Q40 and it was plenty, so sort of
assumed this would be ok for QPC, I have a 40 Gb drive in the PC and it
has almost 30 GB free.
I formatted the .win file to 2000 and it has worked, well this is
probably more than I really need, thinking about it maybe I need to
think out just what I need from QPC, the Q40 had on it a lot of jpeg's
from my digi camera ( also on my PC for safety and to be sure to be sure
burnt onto a CD, so I think my mind set needs a purge ( render unto
Ceaser and all that ).
Yes I think I'll sleep on it, tomorrow I'm into wallpaper unfortunately
not the screen type but the up a ladder type ( cut and paste though )

Still wonder if there is any reason for the format failure, maybe a

It is the 'Many people' that I don't agree with. I think that, by now,
MOST Ql users have migrate to SGC speed or faster. Those who still use
68008 Qls do not buy high end programs anyway and are happy with Quill
and other pre 1990 programs. I am pretty sure that more than 90% of the
potential buyers for QDT are on fast, GD2 ready systems.

As for ProWesS not 'looking' good right now, there is no reasons not to
enhance it visually; it is open source and already support GD2...

As Joachim had told me not so long ago, some things that I would like to
see on it
are tied to the PE and if this can't get update, short of a major
re-write they
wouldn't be possible If on the other hand the PE gets its makeover
then there
wouldn't be a reason not to enhance it further... Before anyone says
anything I
have PAID for ProWesS and the apps before it was open source so I really
like it in
order to buy it :-) I didn't just buy it for LineDesign but because the
underlying
principles are the way of the future for the QL I believe :-)

I have nothing against PE/WMan programming. I have written a few
programs using it. I just don't understand the lack of interest for
ProWesS. Come on people, take the time to try it again on your new
QPC/Q40 and realize that is it a fabulous Window Manager.

Well on the Q40 (at least mine) I tried to load it and it's impossible
to get it to
work. It seems that some bugs were re-introduced on SMSQ/E v.2y99 (I
just found
out) that makes it impossible to work... or maybe it's just my system...

I used Paragraph on your Q40 Phoebus and it worked, although I was not
to sure how many of Paragraph features were still not implimented but
Linedesign had problems, invisable menu's that worked if you could
remeber what was in them were interesting, some incompatabilities with
GD2 do doubt.

[ql-users] One box or two

2002-11-16 Thread Bill Waugh

Hi all
I would appreciate some help ( with out starting a QPC/Qxx discuss )

Having sold my Q40 to help fund a Q60 I now have thoughts about QPC.
I know the arguments for and against both and I have QPC2 v3 demo.
The unknown ( to me ) factor is speed, sure the Q60/80 is advertised as
160 bogomips but I would be purchasing a Q60/60.
So would some kind soul's furnish me with the following if possible

1. speed of Q60/60 in bogomips
2. speed of QPC2 v3 on a 1.8 gh celeron based PC in bogomips

I'm quite aware that benchmarks are not the be all and end all, but they
are a factor to consider along with others, I have spare cash at the
moment to purchase a Q60 but it could be used on other projects, oooh
decisions decisions.

I used to be indecisive but now I'm not so sure,

 Hi all,

I just wanted to point out something to the general QL world at
large: as you all know, SMSQ/E is being made available publicly,
under a licence that was discussed at length here.
This licence is now the current licence for all versions of SMSQ/E.

Under this licence, only appointed resellers may sell the software,
provided, notably, that a 10 euro payment is made to Tony Tebby
 for each copy sold.

Today, DD systems are selling the Q40/Q60. These are
machines that contain SMSQ/E in ROM (they cannot boot
 otherwise).

DD have NOT even requested to become a software reseller. They
are NOT paying the licence fees.

This means that these people are currently selling something
for which they have no licence and which they do not have the right
to distribute - in other words, counterfeit software.
Doesn't this mean that they are software pirates?

Even worse, this means that YOU, when you are buying this
machine with this software, are also using counterfeit software, and
by extension, when using the Q40/Q60, you are also a software
 pirate.

Do you really want to be?

 Wolfgang

I suspect that many of probable Q40i/Q60 purchasers are already owners
of SMSQE for one of the various platforms, If I go ahead and purchase a
Q60 as an upgrade from Q40 I already own SMSQE for that machine, I also
use SMSQE for Aurora and SuperGold Card how many times do you want me to
buy it.
Considering that the original purchase promised features that have taken
years to include and some still not included isn't it time to give a
little to user such as I who have parted with money on trust for so many
years.
C'mon guys it's a hobby and a hobby that includes some nice people, some
very clever people, some understanding traders and some very patient
users and no pirates that I recall.

There are not enough of us left that we should start an us and them war.

Interesting - I have _never_ seen ':' until now.

As I stated in a reply '' ':' and '|' are available.

I noted that I also had the 'reply to messages in the fromat they were

html mails, I'm not sure this could have any bearings on my mail to Tony

the URL that I pasted in to the original reply to Tony would not
constitute a html mail on return surely.

Could someone tell me if my mails are ok now please (:-)

My experience with Outlook Express is that it is inconsistent. Even if

Sorry guys, I may have led you up the garden path.

When I mentioned 'quotes' I was referring to 'quoting of previous
text to
which I am now replying' - basically, what has been said before. I
was not
referring to quote marks ( or ') in Bill's text - as far as I know,
these
 are fine.

When Bill replies to an email, the whole reply has no ''
indents/quotes
before the lines in the original message to which Bill is replying.

The example below, shows my original text indented/quoted by '' at
the
start of the line. In this case, Bill's reply has come through
correctly -
no misunderstanding of who said what. However, in a number of his
previous
replies, there were no indent/quotes - whcih made it difficult to
follw what
was original text and what was Bill's reply.

Yep - that is what I find exactly.

Bill is still pretty unsure as to what is happening.
I am pretty sure he must be sending it without indents () but I
don't
  think he is convinced.

I cannot see how _any_ mailer can strip off '' - it just doesn't
seem
  logical.

Erm... I use Mozilla these days. It strips off the '' marks...

... and replaces them with neat, continuous vertical bars.

I wonder. I can't be bothered to check, but does LookOut offer a

Yes
The choice is ''':' or '|' or you can untick the box and get

my setting is '' and my box is firmly ticked - ( did I really say
that )

Ahha - I have had long 'chat' with Bill about this and he says I am the

I think I suggested an incompatability betwixt OE and Turnpike and did not
aportion blame

I have been unable to convince him that he is SENDING the emails wrongly
 formatted.

when I send them they are correctly formatted, if you recieve them wrongly
formmated then when you send them back they reformat correctly before I
recieve them, or are you suggesting that OE sends them wrong and then when
it recieve replies corrects them before it displays them.

I agree - it makes his emails very difficult to understand.

Norman was speaking of Quote marks he did'nt mention indenting

He is using Lookout Express - anyone tell him how to get it to send
correctly? I bet it cannot and the '' has to be done manually with the
 consequent autowrap problems (8-(#

No - see my other mail to Norman

I've mailed the other two lists I'm on asking for verification that my mails
are not indented properly.
I receive all my mails to (QL-user) back and they are ok.

We need to ascertain what we both mean by 'Indented and 'formatted' I am

Anyone got a URL for UK standard parcel prices.

I see they have disappeared from the 'Guide to services' I got recently,
and I threw away my old list. I cannot find any info on their web site.

I need to post a repaired QL - but it seems Parcelfarce no longer
recognise standard parcels.

Quite amazing and hostile - no wonder they are a failing company.

I hope I am wrong, and that the cheapest rate for a standard parcel of
any weight up to 8kg is not £11.85 for 'Parcelforce 48'.

If true it will mean a charge of £35 for a QL repair - effectively
killing off the service.

That got totally zapped by line breaks.
I had to extract to a text editor and remake it.
There are two ways of getting this through

URL:someurl
someurl

You have not been following the thread on ql-chat (8-)#

Where exactly on that site did you find standard UK prices?
The cheapest I could find there (as I said above) was Parcelfarce48
for £11.85

I reckon something has gone wrong when Consignia site took over
parcelforce.com (I have to speel it right there (8-)# )

Tony I tried it direct from Outlook Express, took me right there , clicked
on services and got a list that includes postal service's, there is also a
post charge calculator, I think what you want is in there, sorry got to go
to work now I'll try it in more detail tonight ( shouldn't cost anywhere
near £11.85 I,ve posted heavy stuff for less)

 Everyone,

We are looking for a digital camera to recommend for use with the Q60.
Would anyone like to offer their opinion of all suitable cameras.
Ideally, a serial connection and compact flash would be the best
combination. Does the Kodak 'Docking Station' come with a serial
option for all its cameras or is this only available to some of its
 camera range?

 Dennis - DD Systems

My Kodak DC215 came complete with serial cable and works fine on Q40 with
Simons Digibas programme , also comes with cable to plug into a tele, but
best way to go is one of Phoebus's IDE CF readers they just fit into a
floppy slot and connect to a spare IDE then read like a hard drive and are
very fast.
Confession - I have one in my PC and a second one that hasn't quite got into
my Q40 yet but IIRC somebody has tried them in a Q40/60 with success.
