Thanks for the help Marcel, but:

Pardon my ignorance, How does one enable sound and where??

There seems to be a bug in DirectSound which can affect the first few
milliseconds of a sound. To circumvent this you can try to configure
 Enable sound to automatic.

Or will we all have to wait until you are less pressured?

we all? Are there more people with sound problems?

Using MenuConfig on SMSQE.BIN. I somehow doubt this helps much, but
it's at least worth a shot.

The sound is rather like grinding gears and also happened when I had
problems with flp1_ running QPC2 3.03 under XP.

Is there any possible BEEP command that could get around this problem and
where should it be put??

Or will we all have to wait until you are less pressured?

I have no idea what an unpleasant beep might be. In theory both
 systems should sound the same.

Sounds ok, I've put it on the wish list.

Do you hope to add the sound options available from MenuConfig of
SMSQE.bin at the moment to the startup configuration dialogue in a
 future version?

Eventually, yes. Currently it's just too much work.

Why not just write an empty command that takes any number of arguments and
does nothing? Load it as a toolkit into the instance of SBASIC that has
the offending program, andit'll replace the keyword that is causing your
problem, be it BEEP or SOUND.

Strange as with 3.03 the sound code is almost exactly the same on both
 OSs.

I would love to be able to kill the XP noise, somehow

You can configure SMSQE.BIN manually using MenuConfig and disable
 sound/reduce volume.

Thanks for the info, I have got Service Pack 1 and I think that I have
up-to-date drivers since I am listening to a USB FM Radio playing
beautiful music at the moment.

I have a feeling that it has something to do with BEEP but do not know
where to put the instruction so as to make it work!!

Microsoft has issued Service Pack 1 for XP which can be downloaded

In addition to fixing (?) a security hole (!), it may have updated
drivers.

If the Service Pack doesn't help (not all driver changes get into these
at first shot due to the number of them and the qualification
requirements), depending on what computer you are using and who makes
the sound chips, you can try the computer manufacturer's websight first
and then, if still no improvement or new drivers found, you should try
the chip maker's websight.
