QubIDE btw semi fixed after I tore another one apart and grabbed it's DIN64 connectors and grafted them on the Aurora and SuperGold Card. (A horrible task I assure you, especially with a Radio Shack brand soldering iron/desoldering pump). Oh where is my Antex (Made in Great Britain)??? Brilliant - well done. You did say on the day that the connector was bad. I have always used Antex. When I used the unregulated mains voltage ones, I used to change elements very regularly. Now I use 24 volt ones and temperature regulated (six years now) I have not had to change one element - well worth the extra cost. Have you tried a heat gun? I have one made specially for the job with a stand and 1 and 2kw output. I guess it can also be used as a paint stripper. You have to be very careful to avoid overheating - the pcb can pop breaking vias. However with practise, one can remove a whole component in one go. With 40 pin sockets I can remove and replace with a new one in one go (ie 68008 socket - turned pin) without any soldering needed. Putting sockets in place of ram is a doddle - a very common QL repair (to replace faulty ram) - takes maybe 25 seconds, and no soldering. The final result almost looks flow-soldered. This method is no good for the edge connector, but allows removal (undamaged) of the connector in less than a minute often. Solder sucking is then easy (braid is better - Chem Lite is the best braid) - especially while the board is hot. I often re-heat the empty hole. Speaking of SGC, anyone knows what the heck is that resistor that's soldered on the din64 connector supposed to do? (I put it right back in but I am wondering... I don't remember it being there before Keith got ahold of my SGC) Bet you it is tying a line to gnd or 5v. But its a on a PC in a learning centre - and we found it easier for complete beginners to see and understand what the computer is doing when we set it to open a new window each time. compete novices understand how directory systems and trees work better this way, It helps in the learning process initially, later we show them how to define options like this to their own tastes. As for the weird spelling of richard on his login, it is completely deliberate - he has been using this for 20-odd years he says, and has some low-level passwords done like that too, various deliberate misspellings of his name. - he opened 'in a new window' - how can one survive with that? see above. much easier to explain to a complete non-computer user what is going on when they can see the trail left behind them. a bit like opening folders within folders in a filing cabinet. probably a little lightheaded due to Guinness (two Ns, two Ss) granted but nonetheless invaluable... Indeed I have picked up more info regarding soldering/desoldering and rework from this list, you and Zeljko than anybody else. You and Nasta are the reason that my Aurora has now proper IDC connectors everywhere Arghh yes. What a stupid decision it was not to put them on. Probably cost although I don't see why. Nasta has always complained about this. Properly keyed connectors can save you a lot of trouble (not to mention that they look neat ;-) No - see later. I went to enormous troubles to get the proper sockets made - had to have them specially made for me, only to find no Aurora's (bar yours) have the proper sockets. I asked Ron how much he paid for his DIL plugs, and then found the 'proper' ones cheaper! My point exactly... Proper ones if bought in sufficient quantities are a lot cheaper. I have also found slip on shrouds for the semi-IDC used on the aurora that can add the flair ;-) (plus extra power pins). My desoldering pump although powerful is really for the dogs and without proper info I would have never been able to pull it off ;-) Pull what off the dogs? Haha pull-it-off as in managing to properly desolder-solder the DIN 64 connectors (Too impatient to wait for new ones although I probably should... they are only a dollar or so a piece (per piece) I know, I know - it was only a joke (feeble I know) I pick this up off Roy.
