2004-04-13 Thread Mike MacNamara
Hi Jon,
Well, for some weeks a lot of email leaving here has been undelivered. In
fact for a bit the servers would receive on all addresses except freeserve
ones. And would only send on freeserve ones, except for 'bursts of activity'
in the early hours. At first we put this down to the masses of spam coming
through the systems. However we took it up with freeserve, who inspected
our connections with them, said there was 'nothing wrong, but would send us
an email', it arrived instantly, and all worked for a few days. Then it
started all over again, this time we took it up with uk2, who host our
domains, most of which are VISP (virtual internet service providers), and
run their own emailing, etc. After extensive probes and checks, it appeared
that Freeserve, AOL,, Wanadoo and others have blocking systems that block
just about everything that goes through the SMTP port 25 with POP3. Our
simple answer to this was to change the domains to another SMTP port ( the
number of which I can't give here), which is not affected by ISP actions.
Result much faster emails, no lost email, no blocking. No problems..

OK, you change it, I tried, no luck.
Much better to write a new one I thought, but nobody apart from Arnoud
wanted it.

Only if you think of the USB as an IO port requiring a device driver, which
it is not, even though M$DOS thinks it is.
It is a shared bit of hardware for which certain shared services need to be
defined.
The Ataris had all sorts of hardware that was shared between completely
unrelated "IO devices", but this did not cause to much of a problem creating
completely independent device drivers accessing completely independent
hardware through the shared services.

> arbitrating mechanism 'on the side' which operates unbeknownst to

Quite right too.
Since the arbitration has no effect on anything other than the drivers for
the hardware on the other side of the bus, why should the operating system
"need to know" about the arbitration.
This is fundamental to the concept of a system that provides services to
applications and drivers rather than having a life of its own.

I know that AOL in early 2004 put in a spam blocking system at the ISP

Yes, I couldn't agree more that better or new applications are needed.
Yet with a low number of creative software writers there are very few
new applications emerging.

Those that are being produced tend to be utilities rather than
applications.

I have bought and I am using Launchpad, for example. This has made my
use of the QDOSMSQ environment more enjoyable by making it easier.

Compiling Basic code with Turbo is now just a couple of clicks on the
relevant icons on the desktop. Very nice. I have a desktop menu just
for Source use like Basic and c68.

Yet Launchpad is an environment manager rather than an application.

Better and new applications, as well as better and new hardware, would
be the ideal.

However, applications need a market to sell to, or a body of users if
shareware.

The only new application that I know of that is currently being
developed is 'Drawing' by Chris Cave. Which is a 2D vector drawing
program.

I know of this because Chris regularly attends the London Quanta Group
meetings, so I receive the latest version :-) ... and I am writing a
simple Guide to its numerous commands.

At present Drawing is being given to users free by the author.

Re: [ql-users] Email problems

2004-04-13 Thread Mike MacNamara
Yes as far as I can find out, the spam blockers they are using on port 25
are word specific, to the extent of becoming ludicrous.
Every forward to ourselves or others was blocked. Anything with a picture,
Any mail containing any one of a list of words a mile long. This email
woulde certainly be blocked.

Your ISP should be able to give you another smtp port no. The other simple
way to beat it is to use an address that is OK, On an address that is
afflicted, (on OE) goto accounts, select account, then servers, then at
bottom of page, ' My server requires authentication' tick box, then click
settings beside it, enter name and password for clear address. That will
direct the SMTP through clear account. So if its Freeserve blocking, enter a
freeserve account name and password.

cheers

[ql-users] Printer help

2004-04-13 Thread Dilwyn Jones
> Epson Stylus 880 versus USB (continued)...
Seems I may have been barking up the wrong tree with this one.

Having borrowed a couple of USB peripherals and bought a USB mouse I realise
there's a bit more to this problem than meets the eye.

Anything which plugs and plays into the interface (i.e. which does not need
software off disk) seems to work. Anything which needs software doesn't
work.

I bought a Packard Bell cordless mouse (£10 from PC World) and that comes
with its own driver disk. Needless to say, this failed to work, as far as
the computer was concerned there was no mouse there even though the software
installed and reported everything OK - all seemed normal as the green light
came on the mouse receiver so it was obviosuly getting power from the port.

A card reader which plugs into the USB port and needs no software installed
(not sure if there's any Windows 98SE component involved or not) worked
first time.

It seems there's something about USB on this computer that means software
just can't find the devices attached. Anyone got any clues - this is driving
me mad. I've never ever had any problems with USB on any computer before.

I've removed all plug in cards to ensure the PC is in its most basic state
and the results are always the same.

Control Panel/System/USB/Properties says 'device is working properly' and
has the resources IRQ11 and memory FFAFD000-FFAFDFFF and 'no conflicts'.
There seems no reason why it shouldn't work but it doesn't!

I've had other people here looking at it and though none is an expert, all
say the same thing: there's no reason it doesn't work but it doesn't!

Right, where did I put that sledghammer?

USB=Useless Stupid Board

If I manage to attend the Quanta AGM (still waiting for my colleagues to
decide if anyone will cover my weekend shifts) I'll bring the PC along to
prove I've not been making this up and bring the place to a halt while

It's not a driver, it's the Epson Status Monitor 3 utility (the whole
package) and it's same version as on my CD.

That is the driver, it is combined package, unzip it to a folder, and then
click setup from the folder, or if your zip is up to it, set unzip and
install.

2004-04-13 Thread Jeremy Taffel
This probably isn't very helpful but.

Did you say that your printer originally worked? I suspect that something
screwed up with your windows installation and that the only recovery route
is to clear the disk and start all over again.

If you go down that route, my inclination would be to first install Linux
Mandrake 9.2 and see what it makes of your hardware. My USB printer and my
USB to Ethernet interface were both recognised and configured by mandrake
with far less difficulty than with Win98SE. There again if it is a mobo
problem, linux is more likely to spot it than Win98.

Hi

Nice to hear plans to improve QL. How about QTPI. Though QL does not
connect
to Internet maybe QTPI could be updated so it would send SMS messages
to
mobile phones. Crazy?

Can do that now Ian (via soQL-PPP and QlwIP)

Just send an email to the mobile phone. I do it all the time with my
wife's phone (yep works even in the US... then again we have T-Mobile
;-)
Is that documented somewhere ? Or an article for QLToday ?

I am sure it would interest enough people.

There's no need for documentation per se. Almost 99.99% of all GSM
providers provides an email to SMS gateway to their clients...
ie you want to send an SMS to my Greek phone you send a mail to
[EMAIL PROTECTED] (Has to be kept under 127 characters usually but
works fine).

Same for my US phone you send a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] and there
you have it I get an SMS on both phones.

There is a way (albeit poorly documented) to address SMS gateway servers
directly but why would you want to do that. soQL-PPP works great with
email anyway :-D (QlwIP does even more but since its not available its
irrelevant now)

Or -unless Dilwyn already said otherwise- the printer may well be fried.
The only way he can check for that however is to install it on another
machine.

An EPSON printer dead isn't that uncommon. When I was still in Greece and
dealt with hundreds of them our stats indicated that they had the highest
rates of failures of all inkjets

Hi Y'all,

It's just me being cheap ; family budget being tight, etc.
I've got a copy of QPC1 which, as I understand it, only works under DOS?
I was going to try it out on an old laptop (486 33MHz) which, I believe,
it was developed for but. my lovely 5 year old daughter broke the
ribbon cable connecting the screen to the system/keyboard.. hence a
DOS partition as, I don't think, QPC1 will work under XP (or anywhere
near it - probably DOS box configuration genius aside - too time
consuming)
When I get a round tuit I'll feedback how it works with 1GByte of DOS
RAM?!?

Finally, no, I'm not familiar with the newer software - I left off with
Pointer Environment QPAC2, on 4meg SuperGoldCard with 2 31/2 inch floppy
disk drives and an amber monitor with an LC10 dot matrix. Got me through
my HND Computer Studies!

Thanks again to the QUANTA community for getting me through those times.
My future intentions are a return to UNIX via Linux and running modern
QL software on it (or does the modern QL software no longer require
another Operating System to run an emulator - I guess I should read more
of the posts to this list and I'd know

Regards to all,
And goodnight for now,

Of course note that the protection scheme of QPC1 applies here as well.
Ask Marcel for details in case that your QPC1 was installed but not
de-installed on the previous owner's machine). Of course it's been a while
since I last dabbled with QPC1 so I may not remember right (which of
