Hi andi ?, i want to make my machine k3.umm.ac.id be an mx for domain umm.ac.id i put all of my machine name in rcpthost in /var/qmail/control/ I must aknowledge that I have trouble to understand what you want to talk about. Iz's not the context but your english that _I_ have trouble with. But you have read http://www.qmail.org/qmail-manual-html/misc/FAQ.html#3. have you? And maybe http://Web.InfoAve.Net/~dsill/lwq.html#multiple-hostnames will help you as well. Regards, Cyril
Re: lets get back to the purpose of the mailing list
I second that. We are now at 114 messages about that one subject on this little list with it's IRONIE few /IRONIE subscribers. I'd say at the point we reached 100 it was far over the limit. So please please all of you STOP IT. You all have the e-mail adresses of the people involved, so if you need to, go on via PM but not on the list. Thank you all a lot. Cyril Bitterich
Re: creating a .qmail
Hi Ruprecht, how can I create a file .qmail. In different Pages for qmail is mentioned that you have to edit the .qmail. There are different ways to do this. the most straightforward way would be an: echo "text" .qmail so assuming you want Maildir-delivery you type: echo "./Maildir/" .qmail but you can always use your favorite *nix-editor. I havn't found such file. Where can I find a manpage for dot-qmail, because the manpage isn't install on my host. The manpages are installed on your host if you followed LWQ or INSTALL. They are located in /var/qmail/man/ you should add them to your "manpath". Ciao, Cyril Bitterich

Re: Users don't recieve mail...
Hi Jim, When I send the message it looks like it works, it doesn't error out or anything. But when I telnet into my linux box, I can't find the email anywhere. How are you telnetting into your box? via telnet yourbox or via telnet yourbox 110 I had a heck of a time shuffling thru the directions/installation documents. It didn't seem very clear, but it was probably me. Maybe you shouöd have tried Dave Sills "Life with qmail". Look for it on the qmail homepage. there is nothing in my /var/qmail/users directory. From what I could make out, there should be an assign file in there but I'm not clear on the format. the format is: =aliasname:user_name:UID:GID:user/directory/::: . the dot has to be in the last line of your file! One of the expired entries in my server is for example: =Andreas.Bitterich:ABitterich:1243:102:/wwwroot/gun/ABitterich::: Another thing, my main user account has 2 uppercase letters, so I tried using the -u option, but nothing again. As you have read correctly you have to have your main users in the users/assign file if they have uppercase letters in it. I wasn't sure if I need the POP3 thing, but I installed it anyways since I notice the properties on my windows mail server account has POP indicated. I put in my inetd too, just like the documentation said. But there seems to be one of your problems. Before I installed the POP3, I created a dummy account (flapjack) and sent some mail to it thru the win workstation. It showed up in the ~/Maildir/new dir. I was excited for a moment. I tried another and it worked too. Try to get to that point again. Thin about everything you did after that worked. Here is the bottom portion of my /var/logs/messages file: Sep 19 22:26:58 alita gnu-pop3d[511]: Session ended for user: flapjack ^^ Here is your problem. gnu-pop3d does not know anything about Maildirs. You need to take the pop3-server provided with the qmail-package. Have at look at the qmail-docu on how to install it. If you can't figure it out I can look in my archives if I have an old configuration of mine. Sep 19 22:35:43 alita qmail: 969417343.977842 status: local 1/10 remote 0/20 Sep 19 22:35:43 alita qmail: 969417343.987402 delivery 28: deferral: Uh-oh:_home _directory_is_writable._(#4.7.0)/ And here we have another problem. See to it that you have the following rights with the home-directory of the user you tried to send mail to. ls -lad ~flapjack drwxr-xr-x you get them by chown 755 ~flapjack Tell me wether it worked or not. Ciao, Cyril
Re: Users don't recieve mail...
HI there, from my sendmail days i remember creating aliases in /etc/aliases like UserName:username but here the problem seems to be the other way around, is there a way to fix it? (phew, luckily we only have lower case usernames here :) users/assign! Another thing, my main user account has 2 uppercase letters, so I tried using the -u option, but nothing again. qmail doesn't deliver to accounts with uppercase letters.[3] qmail does deliver to these accounts. But not out of the box. We did it the following way: Username: Bitterich E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED] entry in users/assign: =Cyril.Bitterich:Bitterich:1003:102:/wwwroot/gun/Bitterich::: Ciao, Cyril

You can search for it easily by executing the following command: grep "^[\.]" * Usually the dot followed by the newline is the sign for the pop-client that the end of the message is reached. But in some cases the message goes on and the mailer gets stuck. Usually every MUA sending such a line in the middle of a message should exchange it with a .. And the receiving Mailer should convert it back to . again. I know this to be a problem with certain Versions of Outlook. But I didn't find the mailer that sends the malformed lines. Does anyone else experience this? We randomly and unpredictably have an occurrance whereby Outlook (2000) is unable to POP a message from our (qmail) pop server. When I look in the users Maildir I see that it's always dying on the same message. I hope that this helpes you. Cyril Bitterich
Re: Virtualdomians
BTW, does anyone know how to make MS outlook to check mail before sending is there a FAQ for all the mail clients on how to make them check mail before sending?? I'm assuming this is frequantly asked but haven't seen anything on it Of course, the reason is allowing valid customers to relay and deny all others Use a recent version of outlook. There should be an option in the properties of the E-Mail settings under "Server". It's called something like "Server needs authentification". Mark that checkbox and maybe change the Properties to it. I usually only do it with german versions. But there I can now tell you the whole damned thing without looking it up anywhere. Maybe somebody should write a virus propagating it. ;-) (Well not really) Ciao, Cyril
Re: spam and well known smtp servers
Hi Marcus, existance of e.g. /var/qmail/control/knownsmpt/hotmail.com in case the sender domain is hotmail.com, read from the file a list of IP addresses and accept the mail, if TCPREMOTEIP is on the list or deny it otherwise (hard or temporary, one's milleage may vary). [...] Any comments (pro/con) on doing somthing like that? (I know it is some additional maintenance effort, but maybe one could convince the "big mail hosters" to provide such lists for download?) Maybe you want to have a look at my header. The E-Mail adress I use is not in any way realted with the Relay-Server I use. And I do use it legitmatly. I could use almost every From-adress I 'd like. But there is a good Point in you proposal. Maybe you just wanted to reject the mail with a notification that you do not accept this mail because they are not sent via Hotmail. But you know that hotmail uses round-robin? Just my 2 cents, Cyril

PTR question (Probably RFC related)
Hi, could you tell me if there is any need to have a valid reverse lookup for your mailserver. Either based on a RFC or common practice. Thanks, Cyril

Re: qmail rc script won't run
Hello Berry, The 'qmail' script file is in /etc/rc.d/init.d, along with all the others and is executable. It's linked to all the proper rcN.d files for the various run levels. It's also linked to /usr/sbin. Did you use the line: env - PATH="/var/qmail/bin:$PATH" /bin/csh -cf '/var/qmail/rc ' ? I got a similar message, but I now my startup-Scripts are working. And for the start of qmail-smtpd with tcpserver I'm using echo -n "Initializing SMTP port. (Q-Mail)" /bin/csh -cf '/usr/local/bin/tcpserver -R -x/etc/tcp.smtp.cdb -c100 -u1 001 -g105 0 smtp /var/qmail/bin/qmail-smtpd ' || return=$rc_failed echo -e "$return" ;; in the start section. Maybe this helps you. I think my problem had to with some '' thing or with the correct path to csh, I don't remember any more. Ciao, Cyril
Re: Relaying problem
Hi again. I have managed to get tcpserver to work with my qmail installation and am now testing relaying. I have set up tcpserver to allow from 212.: How? Is the line in your tcp.smtp file like the following? 212.:allow,RELAYCLIENT="" I first tried a message to a remote host which was refused saying this is not in my list of allowed rcpthosts. Well if your file tcp.smtp.cdb is not correctly written from the correct smtp.tcp then you'll always run into trouble. (I use the parameter -x/etc/tcp.smtp.cdb in the startupscript of tcpserver for qmail-smtp) I checked my assigned IP and it began with 212. I messed about for a while before deleting the rcpthosts file. Now qmail is accepting the mails with no error message Whenever you delete the rcpthosts file you open your host as an open relay! Of course it doesn't complain. but they aren't coming out the other end. My computer does not have a DNS server locally but I do have access to a lan one. Does this have something to do with it? IMHO it shouldn't. But I'm not too sure about that.
Re: Maildir setup problem (newbie!)
Hi, I'm attempting to use the Maildir mailbox. I have user/Maildir (permissions 775) and user/.qmail (permissions 664). What directories do you have exactly? ~mls/Maildir or user/Maildir ? Did you create the Maildir with qmail/bin/maildirmake ? And as far as i know your permissions must be 700 for your Maildir and should be 644 for .qmail. And the Maildir must be located in the homedir of the Mailrecipient And he must be the owner of the Maildir. Besides that: root can never recieve mail. But that's all RTFM but in my opinion not very clear in the manuals. I have changed /var/qmail/rc to indicate "./Maildir/" instead of "./Mailbox" . The file .qmail contains "./Maildir". try "./Maildir/" Any suggestions as to what I've likely done wrong and/or should check out? Good luck, Cyril Bitterich
Re: Virtual email for non virtual host
But now I don't want to have to create an "info" user just so I can have an "info" email for the server. The "info" mail isn't for a virtual domain, it's for THE domain on my server. I've tried adding domain.com:info in the virtual domain file but that didn't work. What do I need to do? Thanks for any help. Ever tried a ~alias/.qmail-info File with forwarding to the existent User on your Domain or an user on one of your virtual domains? Or using qmail/user/assign if you don't want to set up more fieles ind the ~alias directory? And have you set domain.com in you local and rcpthosts file? Ciao, Cyril
Re: How do you set the From and Received: line dates to match the one in the Date: line ?
Hi Ric, Anyway, The email headers generated for the From line and the Received: line are 7 Hours ahead of the actual time sent. The Date: line shows the correct time. As far as I know you are 7 hours behind GMT. Date: Thu, 16 Sep 1999 12:56:33 -0700 And Q-Mail just takes UTC as a timestamp. As you can see from the Header of my mail there seems to be the same problem. But why should I try to read your local time and wonder how the message could be delivered before it was even sent? Ciao, Cyril
Re: Problems while downloading E-Mails with Outlook-Express
Hi, first of all. I'm subscribed to this list. So please no CCs to me. The problem here isn't SSL, so let's not discuss that further. Yes it's not SSL. When I looked at the message using mutt, it turns out that there was a series of dots, all on lines on their own, followed by a line of text, like this: . . . . Well I got hand of the message and it's not the above mentioned dot series. The text is: weiss, was gemeint ist, aber keiner kann's so richtig griffig formulieren= .. Vielleicht sollte ich's mal mit "learning by doing" versuchen??? I would like to know why Outlook could take this for a problem. Might it be that the Problem derives form two IP-Pakets that divided the message in one ending with a dot and one starting with a dot? The curious thing with the whole thing is that the above text is in message nr. 29 and not nr 30 as you could think from the error message. And it seems that this Problem does not occur when using an ethernet connection but does when using a dial-up line. I know that this is not an outlook-probs list. But maybe you can help me in some way. Thanks Cyril
Problems while downloading E-Mails with Outlook-Express
Hi, I read the archieves but haven't foud anything apropriate. some of our Customers (we are a small non-profit ISP) come up with a Problem getting their e-mail via pop3. I use Qmail 1.03 and pop-Server from the qmail package. If there's a bigger amount of messages (70+) in the mailbox OutlookExpress goes on strike and give the following message: Nachricht Nr. 30 konnte nicht abgerufen werden. Konto: 'gunnet ', Server: 'pop gunnet.de', Protokoll: POP3, Serverantwort: 'Vielleicht sollte ich's mal mit "Learning by doing" versuchen???', Anschluss: 110, Secure (SSL): Nein, Serverfehler: 0x800CCC90, Fehlernummer: 0x800420CD. The first line says that the messeage nr. 30 could not be retrieved, then comes the outlook-express alias for that spezial connection and then after the word "Serverantwort:" some line that should be in one of the messages in the /Maildir/new directory. Whenever I'm trying to receive the E-Mails via telnet or Netscape there is no Problem but using Outlook-Express the download always hangs with message nr. 30. Any hints? Thanks, Cyril Bitterich
