qmail without dns
hi there, had followed Life With Qmail and setup qmail without dns. Was working fine since last month. But now when users in our lan use my qmail server with my ip addr in their mua's it delays for quite a long time and sometimes hangs or goes to the out box. and when I use it from the server itself it takes atleast 30 seconds to queue the mail. What could have gone wrong ? my relaying in /etc/tcp.smtp is set as below 172.16.28.:allow,RELAYCLIENT="" 127.0.0.:allow,RELAYCLIENT="" :allow -- Thanks in advance -- In the name of Allah, Most Gracious, Most Merciful -- Praise be to Allah, the Cherisher and Sustainer of the world; Most Gracious, Most Merciful; Master of the Day of Judgment. Thee do we worship, and Thine aid we seek. Show us the straight way, The way of those on whom Thou hast bestowed Thy Grace, those whose (portion) is not wrath, and who go not astray. Qur'aan Ch:1

If you just want an MTA to relay all messages from your local machine to your ISP's SMTP server, try using nullmailer instead -- it's designed for relaying to a smarthost like that. You can get it from Bruce Guenter's site, at: http://www.em.ca/~bruceg/nullmailer/ Then, for POP3 retrieval, use something like 'fetchmail' or my own 'getmail': http://www.qcc.sk.ca/~charlesc/software/getmail/ Charles -- --- Charles Cazabon<[EMAIL PROTECTED]> GPL'ed software available at: http://www.qcc.sk.ca/~charlesc/software/ Any opinions expressed are just that -- my opinions. ---

I have set it up on uucp leaf nodes that have no DNS. The only DNS usage that is a fundamental part of qmail is qmail-remote and that can be over-ridden with smtproutes or avoided altogether via a virtualdomains solution like that mentioned in FAQ 2.3 (FWIW: the Makefile actually shows that there are only two /var/qmail/bin files that use dns.lib. qmail-remote as just mentioned and tcp-env.) Regards.

You put: >:[ipaddress of relay] > in /var/qmail/control/smtproutes Thanks for the speedy response! Yes. I've basically got a mail hub which also has the users home dirs on it, so all internal email goes to it and procmail processes their emails. The mail hub also passes any external mail to another mail server for external delivery. I've had endless trouble with sendmail since Sun went to 8.8.x and changed from sendmail.cf to using m4, so having heard good things about Qmail, I thought I'd give it a try. Thanks again. qmail without DNS?
Hi All. I've checked the FAQ and mailing list archive. The question "can I use qmail without DNS" was asked in 1997, but there is no reply in the archives. Can anyone tell me if qmail can be used [ on Solaris 2.x with NIS+ ] without using DNS, at least for the client machines? My real external email server uses the DNS server provided by my ISP, but I don't really have the time to mess about with DNS on the clients. Thanks! Brian Unix Sysadmin
