[qmailtoaster] simscan 1.3.1 on Fedora Core 9

2008-06-02 Thread lee
Hi People,

Could someone please advise on the best way to overcome this issue.

I have installed all the QmailToaster packages except for
simscan-toaster-1.3.1-1.3.6.src.rpm which fails with the following error.

In function 'open',
inlined from 'make_cdb' at simscanmk.c:379:
/usr/include/bits/fcntl2.h:51: error: call to '__open_missing_mode'
declared with attribute error: open with O_CREAT in second argument needs

In function 'open',

make[1]: Leaving directory `/usr/src/redhat/BUILD/simscan-1.3.1'
make: *** [all] Error 2
error: Bad exit status from /var/tmp/rpm-tmp.82414 (%build)

I think the compilation error is due to the function declaration and the
number of arguments that are passed to it and a compatibility issue in the
latest version of gcc.

If there isn't a easy fix or work around I was thinking of compiling
simscan 1.4.0 and was interested in what parameters I should use with
configure ?

I see in the failed install the following :-

./configure --build=i686-pc-linux-gnu --host=i686-pc-linux-gnu
--target=i386-redhat-linux-gnu --program-prefix= --prefix=/usr
--exec-prefix=/usr --bindir=/usr/bin --sbindir=/usr/sbin --sysconfdir=/etc
--datadir=/usr/share --includedir=/usr/include --libdir=/usr/lib
--libexecdir=/usr/libexec --localstatedir=/var --sharedstatedir=/usr/com
--mandir=/usr/share/man --infodir=/usr/share/info --enable-user=clamav
--enable-attach --enable-ripmime=/usr/bin/ripmime --enable-per-domain
--enable-spam --enable-spam-hits=20 --enable-received
--enable-clamavdb-path=/usr/share/clamav --enable-custom-smtp-reject

Is this all I would need to use, and then do a make && make install ?

Cheers.

Lee.

Yeah, my problem is that they want integration into the email clients.
That is why I was considering more like an LDAP server for the GAL,
and a CalDav server for the calendars.

Although your project looks really interesting, for bringing in a nice

The simplest way is to go ahead and install them, and disable them in the
simcontrol file. It might be possible to simply omit them along with
simscan, but you'd probably have some manual configuration to do in that case.

Re: [qmailtoaster] Duplicate Mail Receives

2008-06-02 Thread Kyle Quillen
Dan,

I was having the same type of issues and was given this advice from
Darrien from the list. I have the email saved for future reference but
I went through and did all of the things on the list and my server load
decreased tremendously and the dups went away. So I think that the
combination of all these things helped me. There was also a mention to
put the "heavy hitter" RBLS first and that helped out as well. I
believe Shubes told me that one. Anyways below is the email that helped
me out greatly and I am using this on all of my boxes now without issue

Thanks,
Q

Hi Kyle,

We have the same issue with our toasters.

The long and short of it is, try to keep your total mail users under
about 1,000 (this usually works out to about 100-200 domains). Anything
over that, and you should deploy another mail server.

When a remote SMTP server connects to your Qmail Toaster and delivers a
message, it is timing out awaiting for Qmail to send back an
acknowledgement it got your message, because, for some weird reason,
Qmail waits until after simscan has finished processing (which itself is
waiting for clamav and spamassassin to do the actual processing) before
returning such an acknowledgement.

Several other things can cause duplicates too like POP3 clients leaving
a copy of mail messages on the server and then losing track of what it's
already downloaded (a common scenario when the client has to go through
a local anti-virus application on the mail user's computer). But also,
bad .qmail files in the user's vpopmail directory can cause delivery to
happen two times.

That's easy to fix. What's not easy is taming spamassassin and clamav.
We have had to do a lot of work--a lot more than I feel we should have
had to for a proported out-of-the-box solution--to keep spamassassin and
clamav from killing your mail server...

First of all, throttle SMTP traffic with iptables to prevent excessive
connections (and resultant spamd/clamd instances) in the first place:

-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 25 -m
recent --set
-A RH-Firewall-1-INPUT -m state --state NEW -m tcp -p tcp --dport 25 -m
recent --update --seconds 60 --hitcount 12 -j DROP

(works in typical CentOS/RedHat /etc/sysconfig/iptables files)

Then, SERIOUSLY change how spamd starts and runs:

/var/qmail/supervise/spamd/run:

#!/bin/sh
exec /bin/nice --adjustment=20 /usr/bin/spamd -m 4 --max-children=2
--max-conn-per-child=15 -l -L -x -u vpopmail -s stderr 2>&1

Tweak /etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf:

ok_locales all
skip_rbl_checks 0
rbl_timeout 5

required_hits 5
report_safe 0
rewrite_header Subject ***SPAM***

use_pyzor 1

# Use for any MTA servers from which you want to trust will not spam
you, such as another server in your
# own network.
# trusted_networks 127.0.0.1/18
# If you use Postini, uncomment this line:
# trusted_networks 64.18.6.10

use_auto_whitelist 0

use_bayes 1
use_bayes_rules 1
bayes_auto_learn 1
bayes_auto_expire 1
bayes_expiry_max_db_size 18750

# Inserted to ignore all mail from Postini, if you use it, and pass it
on unmodified
# This should lessen our overall load.
bayes_ignore_header X-pstn-levels

Make sure to be running THE most current version of SpamAssassin and
ClamAV (SpamAssassin in particular is exceedingly buggy, and they're
constantly fixing it all the time). This may require you to install or
upgrade a variety of perl modules (get comfortable with using CPAN).

As for ClamAV? Well, here's what we do in /etc/clamd.conf:

PhishingSignatures no
PhishingScanURLs no
ScanHTML no
MaxScanSize 1M
MaxFileSize 1M

Changes to spamd or clamd configuration files need a svc -d and then svc
-u from the /var/qmail/supervise directory (i.e., svc -d spamd).

/var/qmail/control/concurrencyincoming is set to something reasonable
for a 2.4GHz P4 with 1GB of RAM, 100 - concurrencyremote is 300 and
concurrencylocal is 200

We set /var/qmail/control/databytes to 20 MB (this is industry standard
anyway).

Changing these files will require a HUP of qmail-smtpd (service qmail
restart does this).

We use the following simcontrol file (so that these files, if attached
to incoming e-mail, don't even get delivered, saving clamd the trouble
of even having to run):

:clam=yes,spam=yes,spam_hits=12,attach=.ade:.adp:.app:.asd:.asx:.bas:.ba
t:.bin:.chm:.cil:.cla:.class:.cmd:.com:.cpl:.crt:.csh:.dll:.dot:.email:.
eml:.exe:.fxp:.hlp:.hta:.inf:.ins:.isp:.js:.jse:.ksh:.lnk:.mda:.mdb:.mde
:.mdt:.mdw:.mdz:.mpe:.msc:.msi:.msp:.mst:.nws:.ocx:.ops:.pcd:.pif:.pl:.p
m:.pot:.prf:.prg:.ps:.reg:.scf:.scr:.sct:.shb:.shm:.shs:.url:.vb:.vbe:.v
bs:.vxd:.wmd:.wmf:.wms:.wmz:.wsc:.wsf:.wsh:.wsz:.xsl:.xlt:.xlw

Be sure to run qmailctl cdb to rehash the simcontrol.cdb file.

Finally, we've decided to not allow catch-all aliases. This has been
the single biggest helpful thing we have done to resolve high load
issues on our mail servers. I can't tell you how badly your mail server
can get beat up by a domain catch-all accepting loads

Re: [qmailtoaster] Duplicate Mail Receives

2008-06-02 Thread Dan McAllister

The server is an older one -- using an Athlon XP 2400+ CPU, 1GB RAM.

Again, it hosts a single mail domain (well, really 2 -- one aliased to
the other), and the problem showed up a few weeks after they were
upgraded to using SpamDyke.

As I mentioned in an earlier (today) post, there was some great info in
the archives (under a load-balancing thread of all places) at
http://www.mail-archive.com/qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com/msg18986.html

As my log files didn't show ANYTHING unusual, I have surmised that the
REMOTE mail server timed out (or mine did) while processing the message.
I cannot control the remote side, so I tried one of the suggestions in
the above-mentioned thread -- I increased SpamDyke's idle timeout value,
albeit not nearly as much as the suggested one: I doubled it to 120
(from 60) vs. the tread's suggestion of 400.

Again, only time will tell and my silent (again) phone! :-)

Again, thanks to Sergio Minini for the suggestion & pointer to that
particular thread in the archives

Greetings all:

I have a client running a toaster (recently updated to the latest everything
on the QMT website) who is now suddenly receiving multiple copies of the
same email.

I have checked the qmail-smtp logs and see nothing unusual, and I have at
least 20 other sites using the exact same settings (for all but the domain
and user names) -- but this client is the only one complaining of duplicate
e-mails.

Any clues where to look??

Thankful for all your help...

What do the logs show for the period of the duped message?
Are they running the "spam box" option?
Does the message show twice in webmail? (I've seen Outlook produce
doubles, when only a single message was in webmail)

Are the duplicate messages large in size?

Re: [qmailtoaster] Duplicate Mail Receives

2008-06-02 Thread Dan McAllister
Sorry for the duplication folks... seems my "SPAM Filter" suddenly
decided that the list was SPAM (in spite of being specifically
white-listed).

In any case, since my client hosts only their own email, but only
recently upgraded to using SpamDyke, I set the idle-timeout-secs=120 in
my spamdyke.conf file. Time will tell it that resolves the issue!

Thanks for the replies...

Re: [qmailtoaster] Duplicate Mail Receives

The e-mails show up in Outlook, but the header on each message is
entirely unique -- so I would surmise that the message is coming in
twice from the sending server. This leads me to believe that the Toaster
isn't acknowledging something at the end of the receive, so the sender
is re-sending in an incorrect belief that the message was NOT delivered

I don't know about the state of the patch, but I imagine that some of the
concerns still apply.

I would look into using a tofmipd (Tmda's OldFashionedMailInjectionProtocol
Daemon) sort of thing. You can find out about it at the TMDA site. You might
want to roll your own ofmip implementation if your requirements aren't
extensive.

[qmailtoaster] adding "exchange like" features on top of a toaster

2008-06-02 Thread dnk
Recently I have joined a new company that is using the toaster
(although i was using them at my old job as well), and they have
started pushing to get exchange like features. Now I love the toaster,
and would prefer to stick with it. I was wondering if anyone else has
crossed this bridge and could recommend a combo of software that can
play nice with a toaster? I can go with something like scalix, but I
am just really hoping to stick with the toaster and add on some other
features through other software.

The two big features would be shared calendering, and a global address
book. We have a mashup of outlook 2003, 2007 and apple mail/ ical
clients.

I have been researching some of the caldav servers (but from first
look, none look overly great - granted not a lot of research in it
yet.) and could learn to use LDAP for the address book.

Thank you in advance.

[qmailtoaster] email footers - revisited

2008-06-02 Thread dnk

Good day all,

I am just wanting to quickly retouch on a topic that I found in the
archive from a few years ago...

http://www.mail-archive.com/qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com/msg07272.html

At that time, the proposed patch had some issues due to things like
breaking multipart mime mails, using stdio and breaking digitally
signed emails. I am just curious if there is any acceptable method of
doing this currently. I have been asked to implement this at my
current employer, and I know the first thing they will ask me is "why
can;t we do this if other people can". So even if I outline the above
issues, they will still question why other email servers can.

I just wanted to see if this was still the case.

Thanks in advance!

Fix the address.
If you put the users in a mailing list instead of trying to send to all
