Re: [qmailtoaster] Updated packages

2009-06-16 Thread Gilbert T. Gutierrez, Jr.

My 2 cents...

With the exception of ClamAV and Spamassasin rule sets, why is Qmailtoaster
updated so much? I know I have not updated most of the applications on my
toaster for 1.5 years (My last hardware migration). On a small setup, I am
sure it is a lot easier to perform regular updates, but on a large one it
has a potential to be a nightmare.

Is there a reason why toaster is not slowed down a little? Jake, I do not
know how you keep up with all the package updates and all of the problems
that keep getting posted on the list. My head spins sometimes as I read it.
I am surprised that qmailtoaster 1.x has not been frozen so that development
of 2.x can be fully engaged. Changing the IMAP client is a big deal and I
am excited that it will be done in the next release. The other item I think
should be a focus is the web gui, not only the admin side which has been a
recent focus on this list, but the customer side as well. I think you are
doing a great job Jake.

The Qmailtoaster is a great project and I really enjoy seeing the activity
on the list regarding it.

Subject: [qmailtoaster] Updated packages

Released a new version of all packages today. Updated ClamAV to 0.95.2.
Updated Squirrelmail to 1.4.19 and courier-authlib to 0.62.2. Added
Mandriva 2009 support. Also added Fedora 11 and Fedora 11 x86_64 support.
ClamAV is a bugfix update and Squirrelmail is a security update that is a
continuation of the 1.4.18 security fix.
I updated courier-authlib by accident to be honest. I was trying to get
Mandriva to work and attempted to see if a newer courier-authlib package
would compile cleanly but ended up finding the issue with Mandriva. Forgot
to put the original package back in place and just now noticed it as I was
cleaning up the old packages and archiving them. It should function just
as the old one did.

I did not get Mandriva 2009 x86_64 support into these packages. Mandriva
2009 renamed a lot of packages from previous editions that caused a lot of
time to be spent finding the new packages names. In the 2009 x86_64
version they changed the names again and I honestly just didn't want to
spend the time chasing the package names down when a new version of clamav
was waiting to be put online.
If someone wants to work on the Mandriva 2009 x86_64 dependency script and
send me a revised version I will add the support into the packages.
Otherwise it will be a while.

Speaking of which, the Fedora dependency scripts could use a freshening up
as well. If someone would like to go through those scripts and make sure
all the relevant dependencies are covered and send me a revised edition I
will be more than happy to put them online.

I have moved the Qmailtoaster website to a new, faster server so if you do
not see the updated packages rest assured that you will see them once DNS
has propagated.

Enjoy!

The next qmailtoaster-plus rpm is now updated. All the latest fixes are
included, as well as recognition of the these latest distro versions.

QTP can be installed/upgraded via yum if you have the repo installed, or
manually by downloading from the web site.

I recommend updating QTP if you're using qtp-newmodel to upgrade the
other packages.

The packages are updated to add new distros and bump the software up a
version or two. There was previously no development at all for
Qmailtoaster for almost 2 years and since I took the project over I
decided to bring some things up to date. It's your system - you don't
have to update anything. I think that freezing the 1.3 branch is not a
wise choice. The project lost 70% of it's contributing base when the
development was previously frozen and that's not a mistake I want to
continue with.

I'm unclear as to what you mean by all of the problems that keep
getting posted on the list. As far as I can remember this is the only
real screw-up I've made to the packages and I did get them fixed in a
couple hours - not like the clamav debacle. Most of the posts on the
list had to do with adding new distros and the problems involved, which
brings us back to the point of why I'm updating the packages. I think a
project that gets updated periodically and is maintained has more of a
life than a project that has not been updated in 3 or 4 years.

Also not sure what you mean by a nightmare for large installations - I
run these same packages on my installations as well. Some servers range
from 2 users (this one) to a single server that has 3100 users to a
cluster that has 40,000+ users at the moment. I find it very easy to
update the packages for all of these systems as long as you do at least
15 minutes of thinking and planning ahead before just jumping into the
puddle.

There is a web admin gui, vqadmin. I also have QControl that does not
have the problems that vqadmin does. If there's a feature that you would
like to see in QControl then send me an email offlist and I will look
into it.

hold off on updating packages and you answered that with your response.

When I was indicating problems, I was just speaking of random posts, not
anything specific to the recent package issue. The system is unbelivelby
stable and many of the problems posted are easily fixed by the poster doing
a little research though there are some advanced questions that do require
someone like you to get their hands dirty. I was personally having many
problems with my installation. I spent a little time, posted a couple
questions on the list that were answered quickly, and got through them. I
have made many modifications, some of which I forgot to document when I did
my install. This has caused me many headaches. I have never used spamdyke.
I just installed last month your Qmailtoaster-Plus to look at a few things
that it performed. I have used a couple of the scripts but still have not
gotten completely comfortable with change.

Good Job.

Re: [qmailtoaster] Upgrading Question

2009-06-16 Thread Dan McAllister

I feel the urge to post my 2-cents worth here...

As a *NIX (Linux, Solaris, HP/UX, AIX, even oldies like Ultrix SunOS)
Systems Administrator for more than 20 years now, and the author of at
least 6 Instructor-Lead week-long courses (I don't count customizations
of existing course-ware), I have always felt and taught that updates
were akin to asking for trouble. In fact, every one of my courses has
a slide (or screen in the video-based courses) that says specifically:
If it ain't broke, don't fix it! (and it is attributed, tongue in
cheek, to my great-great-grandma, Irene).

As the earlier poster implied, there certainly are exceptions -- notably
security patches... but except for security patches, there is no need to
constantly update Linux (or other *NIX versions)! There are very few
true security flaws in the *NIX world, and you certainly need to keep
a look out for them patch/update when they are discovered -- but this
incessant need to be running the latest greatest software WILL get
you into trouble! (Not if, WHEN!)

Personally, I update systems only when I HAVE TO
- To apply a security patch
- To add new functionality
As a result, I often install old versions so that new systems are
running the same OS as the old ones).

A case-in-point was the Linux 2.6 kernel -- which was fully 2-years old
before I installed on ANY of my systems... because I didn't need it! It
wasn't until I changed hardware vendors for my RAID cards and I was
forced into the 2.6 kernels that I went back to the old systems and
upgraded -- and that was for MY maintenance benefit! (They haven't been
updated since -- still running 2.6.18 kernels in nearly ALL of them!)

Bill Gates has convinced an entire generation of System Admins that to
update is divine -- and it is bull... if your system is stable, LEAVE
IT ALONE!

I think I might have broken something getting down off my high horse, so
I'll be going inside now

are this:

1. Is there any problem performing such an upgrade since the original

Not that I'm aware of. There haven't been all that many changes to the
stock packages really. Mostly just support for newer distros.

2. What is the best method to go about doing this to minimize problems?

qtp-newmodel. It's part of the qmailtoaster-plus package, which is
found at http://qtp.qmailtoaster.com.

3. Do you have any other suggestions in doing this?

You might want to do a backup first. qtp-newmodel is very safe though,
so it's not really necessary. You should be backing up your data
anyhow. qtp-backup works very well for this.

Thanks in advance, guys!
