RE: [qmailtoaster] qmail machine being spammer help...

2009-09-11 Thread António Pedro Lima
I had one of my servers with this problem.
It was Roundcube and Apache.
Still not sure that I'm safe enough. It didn't happen again so far, and I
hope it wont. I have two other servers, for witch I gladly bought a QMT
install cd to prevent any of this :)

 Hello
we had a lot of those attacks on our web hosting servers in the past
and it has only to do with apache . It is a known and old exploit,
a spam relay is using Apache to forward data to an open mail relay.
We check those at router level but the mod_security works fine for a
 single machine

Really it is an old exploit.
Nothing to worry about regarding the toaster, well you can always add a
nice mod_security configuration to take care of all those little exploits

 Jake Vickers wrote:

Thanks Jake. So is this simply an apache configuration issue? Is
there an easy way it can be 'fixed' in a toaster package configuration?

It's actually an issue with the programming of the application
(talking about Roundcube here). There are a couple different Apache
modules that can be utilized to proxy or filter the PHP code used and
help prevent the exploits in the code.
I'm sure something could be written into QTP to install any one of
those modules if someone wants to lay out a skeleton that can be used
as a base for the installation of the module.

[qmailtoaster] qtp-newmodel

I will probably end up with a fresh install next weekend.
Qtp-newmodel complains about depending on control-panel and ends like this:

Howdy all,

It appears I have gotten a similar error message when running qtp-menu
newmodel.

I purchased the QMT5 QControl yesterday as well and this is a fresh
install with QMT5, following are the steps I took, in order, to get to this
point:

yum -y update

rpm -Uhv QControl-1.1-1.1.0.noarch.rpm

qtp-menu

saupdate

qtp-extraclam

newmodel

Then this is the message I get after nwemodel downloads works for a few
minutes:

Installed: ctags.i386 0:5.6-1.1 kernel-devel.i686 0:2.6.18-128.1.16.el5

So as it says, I look in /var/log/aufs-build.log and it shows the following:

Hi Steve,

Run this:

yum update kernel

yum update kernel-devel

Then run qtp-newmodel…

Hope your error is solved.

Yes I thought it would check and update/upgrade as it needed...
But no, the kernel and kernel-devel do not upgrade, and the script seeks for
the path but as it can't find it stops there with that error.

I already updated the packages, and the update script is still running.
Seems stuck in:

Do you have the kernel-devel package installed for the kernel that's
currently running?

Please explain your status and how you got there. The qtp-newmodel
script usually checks for this dependency and installs the kernel-devel
package. I'd like to get the script fixed if there's a bug in it. I
think there's possible something missing there though, like a reboot
perhaps?

I did not meant the script should suppose...
I supposed I had my system up to date when I ran the script...
Should have checked...
It would have been nice that the script would not end with an error...
The problem is that, as I understand, the script looks for files in paths
that (if the system is not up to date) do not exist...
Well that is supposing by the script isn't it? :-)

The script doesn't 'suppose' it's up to date. It should check via an
available package tool and update it if it's not. What actual kernel release
package-name are you using?

RE: [qmailtoaster] qtp-build-unionfs failed

2009-07-07 Thread António Pedro Lima

I had kernel-devel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5
Now I have kernel-devel 2.6.18-128.16.el5 and the script
did the job :-)

Funny is this:

Jun 30 14:25:49 mail yum: Installed: ncurses-devel-5.5-24.20060715.i386
Jun 30 14:25:50 mail yum: Installed: perl-Razor-Agent-2.84-1.el5.rf.i386
Jun 30 14:27:04 mail yum: Installed: ctags-5.6-1.1.i386
Jun 30 14:27:13 mail yum: Installed: kernel-devel-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5.i686

But for some reason kernel was not there. Don't ask me how this happened.
I assumed long ago that my Linux knowledge has been growing thanks to qmail
:-)

Today, after think about the log I sent on first message I updated kernel
and kernel-devel.

Jul 6 16:43:06 mail ntpd[2406]: synchronized to 194.8.30.16, stratum 2
Jul 7 15:03:30 mail yum: Installed: kernel-2.6.18-128.1.16.el5.i686
Jul 7 15:08:59 mail yum: Installed: kernel-devel-2.6.18-128.1.16.el5.i686
Jul 7 15:09:38 mail shutdown[16090]: shutting down for system reboot
Jul 7 15:09:38 mail init: Switching to runlevel: 6

And this time packages were really installed and recognized by the script.
I don't think it would be something with install scripts or newmodel script.

The problem was really in my system.
For those with doubts... Pay for the cd. It's worth every cent.

But I have more strange things happening :-)

That make me think that I should really rerun install from scratch...

When I run qtp-newmodel I get:

Installing ezmlm-toaster-0.53.324-1.3.6 in the sandbox ...
error: Failed dependencies:
control-panel-toaster = 0.2 is needed by
ezmlm-cgi-toaster-0.53.324-1.3.6.i686

I think I saw someone complaining about this...
I'll search and try to help myself out...

The script shouldn't have ended with the error that it did. It should
have detected that you weren't current.

Can you describe what the state of your system was? Such as

Was kernel-devel installed at all? If so, which version(s)?
Which version(s) of the kernel were installed?
Which version of the kernel was running when the error occurred?
What did you do to fix it?

If there's a bug in the script we'd like to fix it. ;)

The problem is that, as I understand, the script looks for files in paths

The eMPF patch in itself should always apply error free in any

There are some issues with SRS, mainly because rules DO NOT take it
in cosideration... (code change is required)

If no rules are defined or policy file doesn't exist eMPF takes no

Some defaults (string max size for instance) need to be changed
considering the number of rules, server load and max memory available
for qmail-smtpd (particulary in 64bits systems).

Other then the above it should work just fine.

I'll have a look at current qmt release and check for dependencies for
all distros and change some defaults, and then post a final revise of
 it.

How long have you been running the patch? I'm just loathe to add a patch

if
it has not been tested in length and make cause issues with other things.
Once thing I've learned programming in Linux, PIC, and AVR, is that adding
a
new feature may seem like a good idea now but may cause you an issue later
 that was completely unforeseen.
 Thanks.

Hello,

i have a very strange situation... an HP Server Proliant , SAS drives and
8Gb RAM, CentOS 5 Linux release and about 40/50 Imap mailboxes.

The mailServer is in a DMZ zone.

When lots of people are connected, imap client slowdown, and i can see this
problem by typing: telnet localhost 143... it waits for about 60/90 seconds
before appearing the Imap Service banner.

I have also raised up the max per Ip and max daemons, and i have the
-nodnslookup in order to avoid reverse DNS resolution slowdown.

I think RAM is OK, the Server does not use swap and i do not know how to
solve it...

Are there some other parameters/workaround to avoid this slowdown problems?

Thank you, cheers!

Virtual memory 1.94 GB total, 0 bytes used

put it mor RAM, but I suspect there is something wrong with it.

to RAM first. I'll sub the RAM and see if it was only that...

Thanks for all the hints

I would tend to agree with the possibility of bad RAM. And if webmin
logs the CPU usage like top does, then you're CPU loads are higher than
normal. Can you run top at the CLI and see what processes are eating
 the CPU time?

More like 'if' there are any processes eating the CPU. The CPU loads
averages are a peculiar metric. They reflect average wait times (in
seconds). CPU saturation will certainly cause higher load averages, but
other factors can too. I think that bad RAM is a good guess. Your load
averages are awfully high.

Olá José!

É bom ler na língua materna, mas se calhar e a bem da lista vamos discutir o
problema em Inglês, assim há mais gente a ajudar a ser ajudada! :-)

I will check that about the zen.spamhaus.org because that is happening too,
and with a non dynamic ip address. But the ISP providing that IP is know by
having its IP range logged as a spammer (Telepac.pt)...

As this example:

Hi. This is the qmail-send program at mail.itfor.org.
I'm afraid I wasn't able to deliver your message to the following addresses.
This is a permanent error; I've given up. Sorry it didn't work out.

[EMAIL PROTECTED] 195.245.176.7 failed after I sent the

So I will check on that zen.spamhaus.org as José sugested...

Jake, the problem is as shown bellow:

Olá António,

Se não tiveres muita dificuldade em ler o meu inglês, diz-me para que
eu te escreva em portugês.

The rejection occurs while receiving email, ie, email sent by external
servers to the domains you are hosting or when the email clients are
using your server to relay their email (addressed to domains not
hosted in your server)?

On one of my toasters, which still runs a QMT more than one year old,
I had to give up using (I am not absolutely right, but I can check)
using zen.spamhaus.org as RBL because there were frequent refusals to
relay to clients connecting from IP's referenced as dynamic. As far as
I could understand, those IP ranges should be accepted if
authentication was used, but that wasn't happening, ie, authenticated
clients also got blocked.

You can't have it both ways I don't think. Look at the spamdyke options
and see if there's a whitelist option, but this will be as troublesome
as turning it off IMHO. Your only other option is to get the other mail

Also, please turn off read-receipts on messages to the list. We all find
them annoying since every person who receives your email has to click
NO they do not want to send a read-receipt.

I have checked the qmail-smtp logs and see nothing unusual, and I have at

e-mails.

Any clues where to look??

Thank you so much… That is a very good tip but I do not need it anymore.

I ran into it.

My mailserver looks perfect now. Spam is down to ZERO and it’s much faster
doing its job!

Spamdyke is really managing the messages perfectly!

Now I can happily move all the accounts from de old server to this one.

And I recommend everyone to upgrade to QMT Plus!

Thank you all! And keep up the great job you are doing here!!!

I've been using qmailrocks in the last 3 years, but after taking a look at

Well, that is not true... Spam still gets to mailboxes and I'm feeling lost
here.

Can someone help?

I'm using CentOS 5 with the latest qmailtoaster.

I recommend installing spamdyke. The easiest way to do that is to install
the qmailtoaster-plus package (http://qtp.qmailtoaster.com), then run the
qtp-install-spamdyke script.

You'll have a lot less spam to learn. ;)

P.S. When you run sa-learn, are you running it as user vpopmail? If not,
then it's not updating the right bayes database. :(
