RE: [qmailtoaster] qmail machine being spammer help...
I had one of my servers with this problem. It was Roundcube and Apache. Still not sure that I'm safe enough. It didn't happen again so far, and I hope it wont. I have two other servers, for witch I gladly bought a QMT install cd to prevent any of this :) Regards, António Pedro Lima -Mensagem original- De: Philip Nix Guru [mailto:phi...@ows.ch] Enviada: segunda-feira, 31 de Agosto de 2009 21:20 Para: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Assunto: Re: [qmailtoaster] qmail machine being spammer help... Hello we had a lot of those attacks on our web hosting servers in the past and it has only to do with apache . It is a known and old exploit, a spam relay is using Apache to forward data to an open mail relay. We check those at router level but the mod_security works fine for a single machine Really it is an old exploit. Nothing to worry about regarding the toaster, well you can always add a nice mod_security configuration to take care of all those little exploits Jake Vickers wrote: Eric Shubert wrote: Thanks Jake. So is this simply an apache configuration issue? Is there an easy way it can be 'fixed' in a toaster package configuration? It's actually an issue with the programming of the application (talking about Roundcube here). There are a couple different Apache modules that can be utilized to proxy or filter the PHP code used and help prevent the exploits in the code. I'm sure something could be written into QTP to install any one of those modules if someone wants to lay out a skeleton that can be used as a base for the installation of the module. - Qmailtoaster is sponsored by Vickers Consulting Group (www.vickersconsulting.com) Vickers Consulting Group offers Qmailtoaster support and installations. Yes I thought it would check and update/upgrade as it needed... I had kernel-devel 2.6.18-128.1.6.el5 Now I have kernel-devel 2.6.18-128.16.el5 and the script did the job :-) Funny is this: Jun 30 14:25:49 mail yum: Installed: ncurses-devel-5.5-24.20060715.i386 Jun 30 14:25:50 mail yum: Installed: perl-Razor-Agent-2.84-1.el5.rf.i386 Jun 30 14:27:04 mail yum: Installed: ctags-5.6-1.1.i386 Jun 30 14:27:13 mail yum: Installed: kernel-devel-2.6.18-128.1.14.el5.i686 But for some reason kernel was not there. I don't think it would be something with install scripts or newmodel script. The problem was really in my system. For those with doubts... Pay for the cd. It's worth every cent. But I have more strange things happening :-) That make me think that I should really rerun install from scratch... Some defaults (string max size for instance) need to be changed considering the number of rules, server load and max memory available for qmail-smtpd (particulary in 64bits systems). Other then the above it should work just fine. I'll have a look at current qmt release and check for dependencies for all distros and change some defaults, and then post a final revise of it. Can you run top at the CLI and see what processes are eating the CPU time? More like 'if' there are any processes eating the CPU. The CPU loads averages are a peculiar metric. They reflect average wait times (in seconds). CPU saturation will certainly cause higher load averages, but other factors can too. I think that bad RAM is a good guess. Your only other option is to get the other mail server admin to learn how to properly run a mail server. That's where your real problem lies. Look at the spamdyke options and see if there's a whitelist option, but this will be as troublesome as turning it off IMHO. [qmailtoaster] Emails rejected
Hi, here I am once again needing help I was pleased with my qmail-toaster untill several clients start to complain In my country I have more servers without MX records and reverse dns configured than correctly configured MTAs. This results on a lot of email rejections. Iv been manually whitelisting those that are reported to me But looks like there are a lot still rejected The server is doing is job of course But how could I do this work better? Pardon my bad english, and my little knowledge of Linux But Im learning I think. What kind of info would you need from me so you could help me on this? Thanks. António Lima

Is it possible to get some statistics from the mailserver by email? When I used qmailrocks installation it had a qmailstats script that provided daily reports

The RFC is great and all but as you said there are no obligations. When it comes down to it, we follow the rules that the biggies such as AOL, Yahoo, Google, Microsoft, etc. set. I have a couple domains that have 3 MX records and I see mail delivered to all 3 machines regardless of priority or whether or not the others are answering. As far as I know that particular RFC has not been superceded but I'd say that roughly (without actually creating some boiled down metrics) 70%-80% of the servers that send me message actually follow that particular one. AOL has been seen delivering to all 3 of my MX records regardless of machine status. There's a couple other broadband companies that operate in the same manner that I've seen.Ok, that clears things up. It's obviously the usual 'standard' which we 'all' follow...Thanks for the answer, Marc This is something that worries me... Setting a secondary mail server for backup purposes means that messages will be received in duplicate in many cases? I could handle that, but for many users would (for sure) complain about it :( Or am I confusing this matter? Regards, António Lima
RE: [qmailtoaster] Wrong mailquota values
If the folders permissions are vpopmail.vchpw? Yes they are... In all the users. Most of the users after the first access to the server got their quotas down to 1Kb or at the least at 100Kb. I checked on every folder to see if there were email forgotten in SPAM, SENT or Trash folders but nil . I read about a mailquotacheck script written by Paul Gregg. Has anyone used this? RE: [qmailtoaster] Spamassassin installed but too much spam gettin in
Jake, Thank you so much That is a very good tip but I do not need it anymore. Eric Shubert told me about QT Plus, that I was looking into And last night I ran into it. My mailserver looks perfect now. Spam is down to ZERO and its much faster doing its job! Spamdyke is really managing the messages perfectly! Now I can happily move all the accounts from de old server to this one. And I recommend everyone to upgrade to QMT Plus! Thank you all! And keep up the great job you are doing here!!! _ De: Jake Vickers [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Enviada: sábado, 3 de Maio de 2008 11:20 Para: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Assunto: Re: [qmailtoaster] Spamassassin installed but too much spam gettin in António Pedro Lima wrote: Im using sa-learn spam /path/to/folder/with/spam_mail _ That will learn the messages for root, not vpopmail which is what you need it to run as. [qmailtoaster] Spamassassin installed but too much spam gettin in
Hello, I just got into qmailtoaster. I've been using qmailrocks in the last 3 years, but after taking a look at this I found it much easier to install and maintain. But now I'm having spam problems. I have the server running for 2 weeks now, and I have used sa-learn to teach spamassassin what is spam, expecting it to get less day after day. Well, that is not true... Spam still gets to mailboxes and I'm feeling lost here. Can someone help? I'm using CentOS 5 with the latest qmailtoaster. Best regards, António Pedro Lima ITFor Tecnologias e Formação

Thanks Eric, I'm installing it this moment. -Mensagem original- De: Eric Shubert [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Enviada: sexta-feira, 2 de Maio de 2008 21:31 Para: qmailtoaster-list@qmailtoaster.com Assunto: Re: [qmailtoaster] Spamassassin installed but too much spam gettin in I recommend installing spamdyke. The easiest way to do that is to install the qmailtoaster-plus package (http://qtp.qmailtoaster.com), then run the qtp-install-spamdyke script. You'll have a lot less spam to learn. ;) P.S. When you run sa-learn, are you running it as user vpopmail? If not, then it's not updating the right bayes database. :( António Pedro Lima wrote: Hello, I just got into qmailtoaster.
