You would do that to allow the server at 216.9.248.32 to relay/submit
outbound email via your QMT. This is typically done to allow web apps that
don't authenticate to send email out. Not a good general practice in any
case.

You don't need anything like this with BB users. BB sends email directly
to the destination, with no need for BB users' outbound mail to go through
QMT.

Did you change the host or guest from 1 to 2 gig?
Which VM platform are you using?
Which Distro/versions, on both host and guest?

I've not change enything but the ram.

I've experience some strange behavior, mostly performance related,
with different sizes of ram on VM guests. These have been i386 (not
64-bit) hosts and guests, on CPUs with no virtualization enhancements.

Just to be clear on your situation, did you change the ram:

?

Hello, sorry for late.

I've just increase the memory on guest machine from 1 to 2 gb

when i reset the memory to only 1 gb the problems disappears

This appears to me to be a problem with ESXi memory management, that
happens to show up with vpopmail/mysql (perhaps this is stating the
obvious). I would google for memory management problems with ESXi and
large guest memory, perhaps in conjunction with MySQL. I'm afraid this is
outside the scope of QMT, but please keep us apprised of what you find
out.

Slowness is often caused by DNS misconfiguration, from timeouts of
domain name lookups. I'd start by verifying that your DNS resolution is
operating properly. You should probably install a caching nameserver if
you haven't already:

# yum -y bind caching-nameserver

Re: [qmailtoaster] Re: Webmail SSL

2010-05-28 Thread madmac
I could not get any redirects to work on my qmail server:
So I forced ssl, by that I mean I modified the http.conf to listen on 80, and
443
Made a defailt index.html for http, saying nothing here: you must go to
https://servername.com/webmail
Then sent a server wide email to the fact.
I will be later forcing pop3s and imapds, but need baby stems for the users

As there is only One admin ( me ) I always go to
https://servername.com/qcontrol , just force of habit.
For those that rememeber some of my previous emails, I created a new VM Image
unsing Centos 5.4 ISO, I made it ( Hopefully ) ultra secure.

Link to it from Jake`s site ,http://iso.qmailtoaster.com/

or if the link is still down, download direct from my server
http://techyguru.com

If there is a working solution to get the correct redirect working, I will add
it to the VM Image and re-upload.

Thanks All

I don't think that setting does what you think it does. It is a horible
name for a setting that automatically averages scores from particular
email addresses. It has NOTHING to do with whitelists.

What is does is automatically adjusts the score up or down to match a
running average for an emails (from address) score.

From the manual link bellow:

Another feature of spamassassin is auto-whitelist. But the name is a
misnomer. The AutoWhitelist is designed as an automatic score averaging
system, and is just as likely to penalize or blacklist an address as it is
to benefit or whitelist it. If you want to whitelist, you should use the
directions above.

See response above; Postmaster wrote:

It depends what you want to to archive.

You can either edit ~/.spamassassin/user_prefs or global
/etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf and add

whitelist_from or
blacklist_from

Have a look at

Whitelist a Sender or Domain in SpamAssassin

To whitelist individual addresses or domains in SpamAssassin:

* Open //etc/mail/spamassassin/local.cf/ in your favorite
  editor for system-wide whitelisting.
o To whitelist only for yourself, open
/~/.spamassassin/user_prefs/.
* Append whitelist_from_rcvd {address or domain you want to

2010-04-15 Thread madmac

Ok so far:
I have a new install of qmailtoaster.
All yum updates
All qmail updates.
Set tight RBL, SA-Updates
spamdyke, added 455 bad IP`s, added 9278 Know spammers,
Cron to clean spam, cron to clean trash, maildrop to log rotate.
Installed QcontrolIPE
Installed mod_ssl, openssl and Created self signed key, ( Thanks Todd it
works )

Tested https://mysite.com and https://mysite.com/webmail, both work as far
as I can see . they ask to verify certificate.

when I modify the squirrel.conf as shown:
IfModule mod_alias.c
Alias /webmail /usr/share/squirrelmail
/IfModule
Directory /usr/share/squirrelmail
  Options None
  Order allow,deny
  allow from all
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$
RewriteRule ^(.*/webmail.*)$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}$1 [L,R]
/Directory

it does not redirect , as I think it should
eg: redirect http://mysite.com/webmail
to https://mysite.com/webmail

can any one confirm my settings are correct in the squirrel.conf file.

Can I reiterate , That VM ware is awsome for this kind of testing, just
remember to do a snapshot.

Thanks

You should secure squirrelmail so that it only runs with https, so

that

passwords are not sent in the clear. To do so, configure apache with

a

valid cert (see http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/Certificate),

then

add these lines to your /etc/http/squirrelmail.conf file:
RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$
RewriteRule ^(.*/webmail.*)$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}$1 [L,R]

Then
# service httpd restart

Not needed in squirrel.conf
as far as I can see, If I keep the default settings in the squirrel.conf ,
It works.

Possiblt because I made the changes to the main httpd.conf file.
I have now disabled http access ( on prt 80 ) and forced https ( on port
443 )

Also added Atomic linux Blacklist IP`s to the firewall.
Looking at adding more ready made rules to the default spamassassin. ( from
rulesemporium )

Disabled root access, and changed from the default ssh port

After some more testing I will make it live ( after a backup of cource )
then make the VM avaliable.

I can also put up my method on the wiki for all. If the mods think it
usefull.

more soon.

I use fail2ban to monitor for brute-force attacks. Works on pop3 as
well.

fail2ban is good for brute-force attacks all right, but useless if a
password is sniffed. Best to be sure that no passwords travel the

True - I run everything using SSL myself.
I normally do not see too many passwords sniffed. I can provide gigs

Yeah, I've only seen pw sniffed once.
Lots of script kiddies out there though. I shut off pop3 entirely, and
users use pop3-ssl. Haven't noticed any brute-force attacks on IMAP, or
SMTP for that matter (doesn't mean there haven't been any though).

I am migrating everything over to ssl slowly but in oder to do a full

I am looking into it but just havent had time to figure out what I did
wrong when I did the cert.

TTBOMK, the only way to avoid having to do anything on the clients is to
pay for a cert from a CA that's recognized by the client by default. The
best I've been able to do short of that is to use cacert.org to sign
certs. Still need to import cacert.org's root cert into each client, but
once that's done then any cert signed by cacert.org will pass.

You should secure squirrelmail so that it only runs with https, so that
passwords are not sent in the clear. To do so, configure apache with a
valid cert (see http://wiki.qmailtoaster.com/index.php/Certificate), then
add these lines to your /etc/http/squirrelmail.conf file:

RewriteEngine on
RewriteCond %{SERVER_PORT} !^443$
RewriteRule ^(.*/webmail.*)$ https://%{SERVER_NAME}$1 [L,R]

Then
# service httpd restart

This is a default install of qmail with the ISO.
Not having it is not an option, as most of the clients can only use
webmail as they are on the road daily.

It does sound like your machine has been compromised. If you leave
Squirrelmail open (ie: no protection against password attacks) or
have other webapps running then this is the most likely place for
them to get in. Once they have an account's login credentials, they
can upload things to themselves and run them (don't ask me how - I
never looked at how they did it - I just fixed it) and then brute
force passwords from the local machine to obtain other access or
whatever they are looking to do.
I had one a year or so back where a guy installed phpbb - when he
came in the next day someone had emailed him his root password. He
reinstalled and put phpbb back on and had his machine compromised in
about 2 hours after that.

Good thoughts. Others:

If you have web apps (other than qmt) running on the host, I'd get rid of
the 127.: line in tcp.smtp and see if that blocks it. It's easy enough to
configure squirrelmail to authenticate (and use port 587).

If you have users that are not using TLS/SSL with pop3 and/or imap, it's
possible that their account logins have been compromised. It does happen.

The spamming can have several causes, but why is your box trying to connect to

Thanks for the reply Jake.

I am very familiar with IP tables,
I am using you firewall built into the ISO installer.

So instead of adding many lines of IP addresses to the
/etc/rc.d/firewall.ruleset,
Can I add a line that will load a second file , say called badip which
contains a list of firewall rules just for the bad IP`s.

Can you also show what to add to the tcp.smtp, in case I want to use
that method

Any one tried using, Inter7`s tcpblocker?

Thanks

There's been an increase in spam lately, according to my server's
metrics.
For habitual spammy servers, I block them in iptables. You can also
block them in the tcp.smtp file.

Do you have a reason for not using spamdyke? It's trivial to install,

[qmailtoaster] error 5.1.1

2010-03-17 Thread madmac

Hi guys
recently stared getting a load of this:

*511 sorry, recipient address has invalid format (#5.1.1 -chkuser)*

But looking at the emails being sent, they are correct, no funky characters.
found this on google :

SMTP Error 511 : Bad email address. This error is
similar to error 510 and as with error 510, this status code
is generated by the sender's local mail server.
If the email was addressed internally, then it means that
the addressee, as written in the email's TO, CC, or BCC
fields, does not exist in your organization's email system.
If the email was addressed externally, then the recipient's
email address was misspelt.

But as I said, the addresses are formated correctly

Any Ideas,
Thanks

Hi eric
So on the link below, it says we can change things if we dont like them
eg:

  CHKUSER_RCPTFORMAT_STRING
  2.0.5
   defined
"511 sorry, recipient address has invalid format (#5.1.1 -
chkuser)\r\n"

Error handled by chkuser and emitted by
qmail-smtpd as
error response. You may change it , if you don't like it

Where do we disable this , and do we need to recompile chkuser when
changed.

Thanks

them on a global basis.

messages involved? Is this submission or smtp port? I'm guessing that
this happens when emails are submitted, and there is no bounce involved?

Hi Guys N Gals

I have taken the opportunity to rebuild the qmail VM completely, all

I have also re added the missing PDF.
you can down load via Jakes site:
http://iso.qmailtoaster.com/

or direct from my server
http://www.techyguru.com/qmail/qmail-intel-vm-1.4.1.rar

Note:
Due to the increased size, I had to RAR the image and not ZIP.
Windows users can download winrar, to extract
Linux user can use unrar.

Any problems , please let me know

I haven't had a chance to check, but am wondering. Did you happen to
apply any of the tuning modifications identified in the wiki? Also,
what type/size did you make the vmdk file?

I will confirm.

As Andreas said, you can reset it fairly simply (boot single user).
What would concern me more is the root pw for mysql. Can that be
reset if you don't know the existing one?

Yeah, you can reset the mysql root password if you're logged in as
root. Takes a couple steps, but I've used it myself when I worked on
systems where the admins had never really documented anything.

I'm assuming he means the VM from iso.qmailtoaser.com.
I did not create the VM, so I'm downloading it now to see if there is
a PDF in there with the password. There *used* to be, back when the VM
was first created, but things change and it may have been left out.

I have run the replication twice now and got the same problem,

I believe that in the video I tell you to use --prefer when syncing
initially so you do not overwrite the existing data, and the lines
that help you with this are commented out in the head of the script
(since you only run them once) in the Initial Sync portion.

Quotas are broken (should be fixed with vpopmail-5.5 fwiw, sometime
this year), but I don't recall seeing warnings when NOQUOTA is set.
I'd try setting a quota, then setting back to NOQUOTA and see if that
clears it up.

2009-05-20 Thread madmac

Hi David,
For backups, there is already installed the qtp-backup scrip.
I use this to do a daily backup, to the default /backup folder.
I then scp the backup to a second server, in case of Primary server failure
I also added my howto on the wiki, just search for automated backup.

Re: [qmailtoaster] smtp authentication question

Hi rajesh

I found it was my server that was comprimised , not the user.

Hope it helps

hi

i will clarify myself

i had a customer abc.com with email id ; u...@abc.com

his machine got compromised

and all of a sudden i found thousands of emails with the from email id as
anyth...@yahoo.com, anyth...@hotmail.com etc started going thru the server
and was authenticating using : u...@abc.com.

since the normal installation of qmail will check the auth information,
find it correct, check the from email ids and find that hotmail.com is a
valid domain, will allow smtp authenticated relay.

so basically what i need is to put a restriction that for an authenticated
smtp session only the domains on my server can send emails

sending email thru my server he has to mandatorily have the from email

They have to have an account to authenticate. I don't understand what
you're asking.

[qmailtoaster] Auto backup and restore

2009-04-28 Thread madmac

*Backup your qmailtoster server to an other server.*
Through necessity, I have created a Backup server ( server2 ) to act as
a copy of my main qmailserver ( server1 ) and automated the process.

*Note this is not the only method , and I give no guarantees it will
work for you.*
I installed two server identically using QMT.iso Centos 5, from our
great friend Jake Vickers.

*Login to server 1 (your IP address ) 192.168.1.100*
cd /root
Create the Key file
ssh-keygen -t dsa ( this will be called id_dsa_pub ) in the /root/.ssh/
folder

Check the file exists
cd .ssh/
ls

Copy file to Server 2 ( your IP address ) 192.168.1.101
scp id_dsa.pub r...@192.168.1.101:/root/.ssh/
enter root password on server 2
*
SSH to server 2*
ssh r...@192.168.1.101
enter root password again

Check the file came across
cd /root/.ssh
ls

Add the key to the authorized_keys files
cat id_dsa.pub /root/.ssh/authorized_keys

Your server 2 is now setup to allow root to login from server1.
Exit and login again, it should not ask for a password if all went well.

ssh r...@192.168.1.101
exit, back to server 1.
*
Your back up should be in the /backup/*
Called something like 200904280102-backup.tar.gz ( year, month, date,
time-backup.tar.gz )

Depending on your system, it can take hours. So I created a script, to
backup then SCP the backup to server 2

*Here is mine: /root/backup.sh*

#!/bin/sh
# run backup command
/usr/sbin/qtp-backup
#
# Copy file to server 2 using SCP to the /root folder
cd /backup
scp -backup.tar.gz r...@192.168.1.101:/root/
exit

*save the file , and make it executable:*
chmod +x backup.sh
*
On server 1 make a cron job to run the backup (mine is at 02:00 )*
crontab -e
*2 * * * /root/backup.sh

The scrip will copy -backup.tar.gz, to server2

*Thanks to Erik Schubert, modify the qtp-restore script.*
Change:
read -p Please enter your MySQL Root password: mysqlrootpass

to
read -p Please enter your MySQL Root password: mysqlrootpass
mysqlrootpass=your_password
*
Save it ..

create a cron job for the restore : i run mine at 04:00*
crontab -e
* 4 * * * /usr/sbin/qtp-restore

*Login to server2 and double check everything restored, you may have to
reboot , not sure yet.*
If your main qmail server goes down, just log into server 2 and change
the IP address to that of server 1. ( 192.168.1.100 )

Hope this helps someone, as it was to late for me.
All my tests worked, this is a true working environment, not a Lab test.

Any errors found please let me know, but as i said , it works for me.
MadMac
