[Qt-creator] Mac debugging helper rebuild error

2010-11-30 Thread Stephen Chu
I am having errors when rebuilding debugging helper on the Mac with the
latest 2.0.94 snapshots. It errors when building against the downloaded
prebuilt 4.7.1 and git 4.7 branch.

It looks like it's referring "qdeclarativedebughelper_p.h" header that
is not in the prebuilt binary. But it still errors in git build (I have
qt installs onto its own dir with -prefix ".") with missing member in
QDeclarativeDebugHelper class.

See the attached logs for details.

Re: [Qt-creator] [Announce] Qt Creator 2.1.0 rc1 released

2010-11-29 Thread Stephen Chu
Glad to see it coming along. Having been using the snapshots, I like the
new 2.1 a lot.

I just noticed the snapshots now all have version 0 on the FTP? Also,
Mac build has been missing for some days.

[Qt-creator] 2.0.93 Windows snapshot and Debugger Helper

2010-10-09 Thread Stephen Chu
I just updated to 2.0.93 on Windows and find I need to rebuild debugger
helper now. I thought it's not needed on Windows with the new Python
enabled gdb since a few versions back?

Or maybe it's because I am using Qt 4.7.0-rc1?

Rebuilding it fails without error. I think it's the same timeout issue I
ran into on the Mac.

I changed the timeout from 8 to 18 (just a random larger number)
and it works.

Thanks. I managed to load from git and build Creator using Creator after

OK. Never mind. There's an permission error during the building of
QtCore framework. Off the wipe the git and start from scratch.

I tried "-prefix '.'" over the weekend and it failed at the install.
Got this message:

I looked at "/qt/lib" and find there's only a .prl file in

Will try to clean and rebuild it. Wonder if this is a know issue?

Hello everybody.

As you may have noticed, there's a new branch 2.1 in the git repository.

The plan is to have the Qt Creator 2.1.x releases from this branch at some
point of time, and we are right now in a feature freeze for the 2.1.0 release.

New development is supposed to go to the master branch, fixes to 2.1, which
is roughly daily merged back into master. In theory there should not be much
master-only activity right now.

When released, Qt Creator 2.1.0 will require Qt 4.7.1 because of two sets
of features/fixes that are not present in Qt 4.7.0. The first one concerns
QML, the second one affects the performance of the syntax highlighter.
While the new semantic syntax highlighter (introduced after 4.7.0 was
branched) works with Qt 4.7.0 it triggers too many updates causing stress
to the hardware.

I can't rebuild debugger helper on the Mac with Creator 2.0.91 snapshot
and Qt 4.7.1 from git. It's looking for some private headers that are
not in the install. See the attached file.

I don't know if it supports it or not. My guess is it doesn't. But
that's the version that comes with Xcode 3.1.4 which is the highest

Re: [Qt-creator] 64-bit debugging helper on OS X 10.5?

2010-06-02 Thread Stephen Chu
Now I can't debug 64-bit code with the last few snapshots, even without
debugger helper.

It looks like gdb is not set to x86_64 when debugging. I got this error:

A handler for the OS ABI "Darwin" is not built into this configuration
of GDB. Attempting to continue with the default i386:x86-64 settings.

I attached the debugger log. I use this project setting to force Creator
to build x86_64 on OS X 10.5:

CONFIG(debug, debug|release) {
CONFIG += x86_64
CONFIG -= x86
}

It does build a 64-bit binary. I just can not debug it. And I was able
to a week or 2 ago.

Is 64-bit development only supported in OS X 10.6 now?

I have installs from both beta 1 binary and git source. Beta 1 package
come in both x86 and x86_64 and I configured source build to create x86,
x86_64, and PPC. And I verified the frameworks all have expected
architectures in them.

I tried rebuilding debugging helper libs for both installs. Both of them
resulted in x86-only dylibs.

Also, I don't think how debugging helper is build is related to the
current project.

I wonder that too. I need to add these lines in my pro file to force
Creator to build and run x86_64 when debugging:

CONFIG(debug, debug|release) {
CONFIG += x86_64
CONFIG -= x86
}

And these to have a tri-arch universal release:

CONFIG(release, debug|release) {
   CONFIG += x86
   CONFIG += ppc
   CONFIG += x86_64
}

[rant]
A bit OT but I really don't like the choice Nokia made on including only
x86 amd x86_64 in the binary package and Creator download. The 2 target
the same CPUs, leaving the whole PPC user completely out in cold. The
choice would have made more sense on Windows release, which oddly
enough, doesn't have 64-bit binary available.

[Qt-creator] 64-bit debugging helper on OS X 10.5?

I just started to experiment with 64-bit build with Creator 2.0 and Qt

build the debugging helper in 32-bit. So I lost all the smart formatting
of the variables.

Does Creator build helper in 64-bit when running in 10.6? And how do I
make it to build both 32 and 64-bit helper?

[Qt-creator] Mac Creator is now Intel only?

2010-05-07 Thread Stephen Chu
So I just had this surprise last night when I downloaded and tried to
install the beta on my trusty old little iBook G4, and find that big

Yes, the beta binary is Intel-only. It contains both x86 and x86_64 but
no PPC.

I then find out PPC is supported in the form of built-it-yourself way.
the reason given is to limit the download size. I posted some comment on

The choice of x88 and x86_64 doesn¹t make much sense to me. Yes, I
understand the need to limit the download and support effort. And yes,
as a developer I also understand being at the cutting edge is cool. But
people with any of the x86 boxes can run 32-bit x86. There¹s no Macs
that require 64-bit apps. And Creator itself doesn¹t really benefit from
64-bit code, if at all. We don¹t edit source files that are larger than
4GB. And all the compiling and linking are done with executable external
to Creator execution space anyway.

The point is, your choice of including only x86 and x86_64 covers only
x86 family of Macs, leaving out all of the PPC Macs. With x86 and PPC,
you allow all Macs to use the app without losing anything.

[Qt-creator] Lost drag and drop in 2.0 beta?

2010-05-06 Thread Stephen Chu
I just find that I can not drag some text and drop it to a different
location of the same file in the editor.

Any one else has this problem? I am running Windows 7 x64. Filed a bug
on this here:

BTW. Mac drag-n-drop still use a opaque image which always blocks the
location where I want to drop it. Very annoying:

As it always heppens, I find it right after I posted the question.

I moved a built helper (the whole "qtc-debugging-helper" folder) from
the app bundle to a separate location. I then go to the preferences
panel and choose "libgdbmacros.1.0.0.dylib" in the copied folder.

The debugger finds the helper and works. But in the Qt preferences
panel, it says the helper is not built. Clicking Rebuild created a new
copy inside the bundle. I think Creator should use the new location for
rebuilding.

Thanks.

[Qt-creator] Avoid rebuilding debugger helper on Mac?

2010-05-03 Thread Stephen Chu
I've been following 1.3.83 snapshots for some time. It's been working
great. But every time I update to a new version on the Mac, I have to
rebuild the debugger helper. I don't have to do the same with Windows
version.

It turns out that the debugger helper info on the Mac is created inside
of the application bundle. So every time I update to a new snapshot, the
data is gone.

Is there a way to set where the helper data is stored? Thanks.

The current snapshots seem to be built from 2.0.0-beta branch. A lot of
commits that are master only haven't showed up. So I can't test most of
the recent fixes to bugs I reported.

Any chance the snapshots will switch to master soon?

So it can be synced to all other machines. I used Dropbox
<https://www.dropbox.com/referrals/NTIzMzUyMjE5> to sync the project
folder across half a dozen machines at 2 locations.

I don't want to sync the shadow build directories since the files
changes all the time. But the built app is what I want to keep.

PS. Please sign up for Dropbox with my ref. link so I can earn extra

I'd like to copy the built binary back to the project folder. I have
several PCs that I work from during different time of the day. Each of
them can have different shadow build setup. Using absolute path will not
work across them.

So the least I will need are the path to the built binary and the path
to the project folder.

I can construct the built binary path by using hard-coded name in the
command arg field. But I will have to remember going back to change it
if I ever rename the project output. Hard-coding the project will not
work since the project file may reside in different locations between setup.

And you can never have too many predefined macros/variables anyway. :)

Maybe using environment variables for these? Setting them up before
calling the custom step?

I don't really need to link directly to the sub-frameworks. Using
ApplicationServices works for me. Guess I will have to wait for Creator
to include the headers in the master header for code parsing.

[Qt-creator] How to include OS X system framework header files?

Hi.

I need to access some native OS X functions, specifically ColorSync API.
I can add #include to my
source files and have it compiled properly. But if I use #include
 then it can not find the file.

What is the rules of including this kind of system headers? The reason
I'd like to include individual header files is so Creator can highlight
the types declared in them properly. Right now it doesn't see anything
defined in those files.

[Qt-creator] Using Windows API directly

2010-03-27 Thread Stephen Chu
Hi.

I have a piece of code that converts CMYK image data to color corrected
RGB for display. In Creator, I can use ColorSync for OS X by including
 and call the OS function
directly.

I need to do the same thing on Windows with WCS/ICM. So I include the
following:

#include
#define _WIN32_WINNTWindowsVista

#include
#include

and call CreateColorTransform(). It compiles but fails to link. The ICM
API is documented to exist in Mscms.lib and .dll:

My question is, how do I make it link to the right library? I am using
mingw that comes with Creator 2.0 alpha on Window.

Thanks.

That's a lot of talk for just a button. Can we just have both of them

2010-03-25 Thread Stephen Chu
I notice that the 2 run and debug buttons are now merged into 1. And
works differently depending on if you are in Edit (run) or Debug (debug)
mode.

I like the previous 2 buttons way better. It allows access to both
actions in all modes. I mostly work in Edit mode since it has more real
estate to work with in the editor. Now I need to switch to Debug mode to
click at the debug button.

Of course I can always just hit F5. But if that's the rationale of
having just one button, why having button at all then?

And if for some reason there can absolutely be one button, make it the
debug button all the time. It's way more useful in an IDE.

The Creator 2.0 alpha binary package does install both gdb 6.8 in mingw
dir and python gdb in its own dir. The gdb preferences still points to
the mingw one since this is a upgrade install. But after I point it to
the python one (gdb-i686-pc-mingw32.exe), I now get an error trying to
start a debugging session: "Executable failed: During startup program
exited with code 0xc135."

I am starting to this Creator 2 alpha works only with Qt 4.7 now. Really
frustrating. :(

Filed a bug on this:
<http://bugreports.qt.nokia.com/browse/QTCREATORBUG-934>

Back to Mac for debugging...

Thanks for the info.

I am using 1.3.81 with Qt 4.6.2 on the Mac. I find the debugger helper
doesn't seem to work anymore. All the Qt types like QVector only shows
 instead any of the useful things like number of items
and the first few values. Does Creator 2.0 only work with Qt 4.7?

I did this to switch an existing mingw32 project to VC (the free tools):

1. Set Qt VC build as the default in the Qt versions preferences.

2. Close the project if it's open.

3. Go to the project folder (where the .pro is) and delete the .user and
all make files.

4. Open the project in Creator. The project should now uses the VC
version of Qt.

You may need to redo some project settings since the .user file is where
various settings are.

Hope this helps.

[Qt-creator] New icons in snapsot

2010-02-25 Thread Stephen Chu
I just installed 201002250030 Mac snapshot and find the new icons in
debugger panel:

http://farm3.static.flickr.com/2761/4387846628_476829c726_o.png

I find them less intuitive than the old ones. The continue icon looks
like restart. Stepping over, into, and out icons look like some sorting
options.

They are cuter (or Qter? :) ) but really don't convey the purposes well.

Just my 2 cents.

Let me file a bug report on this. I hope the next release will have
source files included. Really don't want to compile the source myself. I

Actually Creator should handle this easily. It's just that rcc is given
a path relative to the shadow build dir but it's set to work in the
project dir. Setting the working dir of rcc to the shadow build dir will
fix that. But I am not sure if this is a Creator or qmake issue.

Say my project is at C:\Projects\MyProject\MyProject.pro and the shadow
build directory is set to C:\Shadow\

When compiling C:\Projects\MyProject\MyProject.qrc, rcc is given a path
"..\Projects\MyProject\MyProject.qrc" which is a relative path
calculated from C:\Shadow\ but rcc is set to use C:\Projects\MyProject\
as its working directory from where the given input path is wrong.

That's why using a shadow build directory next to the project dir works.
The relative path to the qrc file is the same calculating from both
directories.

I hope this is a easy fix. Easy for me to say. :)

[Qt-creator] Shadow build problems

2010-02-03 Thread Stephen Chu
I tried the shadow build feature and find some problems with it:

1. If the project folder name has space in it, enabling shadow build
will cause moc to fail. It complains that there are too many input files.

2. On Windows, rcc.exe reports that the qrc file does not exist. I think
it's given a relative path from the build folder but the working dir is
the project dir. Placing the shadow dir next to the project one solves
it.

A couple of hoops to jump thru but it working now. Just FYI.

Re: [Qt-creator] Updated .user-file saving mechanismn

Hi

Is there any plan on making it easier to move .user files between
platforms? By that I mean building the project with Creators on
different platforms.

Right now when I open a project in a different platform, I need to
delete .user and other make files or the project will use the build
steps from the other platform.

I changed the directories for object, UI and other temp files. But the
.user and make files still need to be manually cleaned.

Any way to make this process simpler? Thanks

Just updated both my Mac and Windows boxes from 1.3. The Mac box works

I did uninstall previous version before installing the new one. Any idea

I want to use Creator with VC++ tool set. Other developers in the office

Congratulations on the new release. Have been using 1.3 snapshots and
it's been great.

bout the VC++ support. Is there a step-by-step instruction on what to
download and install, how to setup Creator to use it? I assume the free
Windows SDK contains the supported compiler and tools?

Thanks.

Thanks for the pointer. I read the doc several times and still don't
understand what it means or why it needs to be that way.

If debug and release are mutually exclusive, why do we need to define
the set of values? Isn't there only one value between the 2 left in
CONFIG? If debug and release are both in CONFIG, what does setting the
value set help?

I know what to do to get it right now (always add the second parameter
when testing for debug/release) but the doc really is absolutely of no
help. :)

Re: [Qt-creator] Control where the compiled object files go?

2009-11-09 Thread Stephen Chu
Thanks. That's what I am looking for. So I added these lines to my pro
file:

CONFIG(release, debug|release) {
   macx:CONFIG += x86 ppc
   BUILD_NAME = release
} else {
   BUILD_NAME = debug
}
macx:PLATFORM_NAME = mac
win32:PLATFORM_NAME = win

DESTDIR = ./$$BUILD_NAME/$$PLATFORM_NAME
OBJECTS_DIR = $$DESTDIR

And it works.

The odd part is if I use CONFIG(debug) it's always invoked in both debug
and release builds. Same with CONFIG(release). I have to use
CONFIG(release, debug|release) and else to make it work.

[Qt-creator] Control where the compiled object files go?

2009-11-09 Thread Stephen Chu
Hi

Is there a way to control where the compiled object (.o) files go? I'd
like to put them in separate folder for debug and release builds so they
don't overwrite each other every time I switch configuration and have to
manually clean the project. It would also help separate them between
builds for different OS.

I tried DEST variable but it only place the final app (I am on a Mac)
into it. All the .o files still are placed along with the .cpp files.

Thanks.

No. Not really. I don't know where or when it will work. It's working at
both locations of the file now. But it refused to work from the end of
the file just a hour ago. And it was like the CONFIG() control is not
even there: both debug and release created UB build.

But it's working now and I hope it continues to work. :)

[Qt-creator] OS X: Universal binaries only in Release build?

2009-10-19 Thread Stephen Chu
How do I configure a project to create universal binaries only when
building for release?

I added CONFIG+=x86 ppc in pro file but it build universal binaries in
both debug and release configurations. It's a waste of time for debug
build since only one architecture is needed for debugging.

Thanks.
