The agencies that have provided aides the past several years for shopping,
cleaning and laundry hear from me if something happens! I am not afraid to
call and when in hospitals or 'step-down' units, the head nurse or DON get
to know me real fast if there is any incompetance on the ai8des or nurses
part. I had to tell, a what turned out to be a newly graduated RN, how to
do a sterile dressing change one time. She was not my nurse anymore! If I
get incompetense or lousy attitude, the boss hears about it!

Gotta go, one of 'the good ones' is here!

This is appalling to hear. I could understand an attendant not knowing
better, but a CNA!

My recommendation is to house your own supplies. Keep them in a place
where you can keep track of them. If you are relying on Visiting
nurses, then immediately report any foul business. This is YOUR life in
their hands. Don't feel bad for making people experience the
consequences for doing wrong. If you don't, they may seriously injure
you or the next person down the road.

You must do what is necessary to take care of yourself, no one else
will. It is my job to understand my body and how to take care of it.

This sounds like what my state is going to be switching to. The pay is
$7.75 hr. Also our meds are going to be paid by MediCare! A letter assured
me that nothing would change and there would be a small co-pay like before.
Plus we are going to switch to the Div. of Soc. Services to handle the aides
pay. They are paid every 2 weeks. There again all they do will be aproving
who I hire by a background check which is going to be much more stringent
about tickets or minor altercations with the police.

I just hired a gal that I really did not want to, but had no choice as my
main aide is going to go on vacation for a week and she has nothing else to
do at that time. We'll see how long she lasts after that week. A college
kid finally called me with experience and the supper and evening hours were
perfect for her. I would love to have hired her, but needed those morning
hours for a week. The bad thing about a student is they leave during school
breaks. But she would be dependable for the time she would be here! The
new gal has already showed she is not dependable as the second day she was
to work she called in 3 hours early to say her brother had taken her son
fishing and used her car and could not be found.
Then she was 30 minutes late this morning because she 'guessed' her alarm
did not go off and her grandmother had just woke her up--yet she had a
couple of 'kids'(?) in her car that had court dates and one came up to ask
how long she would be! She mumbled something about she thought they were
going to walk to the court house.

All I can say is "Thank God!" for my other 2 gals!!

 Hi Everybody,
 Happy Memorial Day!
I have to pay a LPN 6.50$ an hr 3 nights a week to sleep. Lol. She turns
me and caths one time, helps start my bath then leaves for work leaving me
half done till the other nurse gets here at 8. I also pay a aid 300$ a
month to help shower, he can't do nothing by his self (or won't ) so he
aggravates the hell out of me till he leaves around 9. But what can I do
about it, not a dam thing. I have to have them.

  Hi Carol,

$6.50 is still not completely out of the picture as a wage in
certain states and small towns ESPECIALLY if they're given enough hours. I
had an aide in NY (age 65 but energetic as a 25 yr-old) whom we paid
privately for $6.50. She WANTED little jobs like I needed to keep busy.
She moved to N.C. and hasn't found anyone TO work for! Geeez.. she HAS
the work ethic but moved to a place where all needy people are in asst
living, nursing homes, etc.

We miss her and she misses us. But she's 71 now and last time we
spoke she was diagnosed with some odd condition.

I'm really eligible for 35 visits a week (under MediCARE) but am
lucky to get 10. You're lucky to get 40 hrs!!!

I live in a big town (Tucson, AZ - million people) and aides want
AT LEAST $10/hour. I pay my one reliable aide that amount to work privately
on Sundays for housework AFTER she finishes my health care that the agency
pays. She's here anyway so doesn't mind.

I had one aide a year ago who had another patient pass away. Her
patient had tons of chux so she brought them to us. So we're set on those.

 All this makes life hell.

If you live someplace that provides home health services

We were promised chux over a month ago and have not gotten them

Geomagnetic Storm in Progress

by Mitch Battros - ECTV

If you were thinking unusual weather has been occurring in your area, you
were right. A series of "record breaking" weather has hit just about every
continent on the Earth. Right here at the ECTV studios, an abrupt "weather
warning" was broadcast to warn people of severe heat as we climbed into
the

90's in May. Normal temperature is approximately 63 Fahrenheit. Some areas
hit 'record lows' showing a 30 degree shift in temperatures.

The Sun sent off an M-Class flare on May 28th from sunspot region 767 with
a

following CME that was Earth directed. So today, and right on schedule
within 48 to 72 hours, we are under a severe geomagnetic storm.

Kp Index: http://www.sec.noaa.gov/rt_plots/kp_3d.html

Watch for continued extreme weather to occur. Possible significant
'temperature shifts' will occur within minutes or hours. Also watch for
straight-line winds, micro-burst, wind shears, and tornadoes.

Equation:
Sunspots => Solar Flares => Magnetic Field Shift => Shifting Ocean and Jet
Stream Currents => Extreme Weather and Human Disruption (mitch battros)

Re: [QUAD-L] Scorpion

2005-05-31 Thread Greg

The vet said scorpion stings rarely hurt a dog, but we got the
anti-venom and some steriode shot for $200 anyway, to be safe.

I never worried about them, but then think how close this was
to me. What if it came up my leg or got in my bed. I'd be laying there blowing
at it as hard as I could :-)

I still have not seen a Havalena, but want to. I guess just
next to us in Queen Creek, they are big problems. Infested with them, digging up
plants, turning over garbage cans. But the biggest problem they say is just how
bad they smell. 5 years ago, my housing developement was open fields and
friends use to hunt Havalenas right here. But now there is little open space
here.

Gila Monsters are scarey things. Never seen one here, but the
other lizards are everywhere. Any given time I could go in my backyard and see 4
or 6 lizards on my fence wall. Thy are so fast, they should be called lightning
lizards.

That was one of my concerns before moving here since I could be alone

climb all over me and possibly bite w/o me knowing it.

And worry abt my dog too.

But I'm glad to say we have seen NONE in all that time.  And we
  don't spray.

The scariest thing that HAS happened with a dangerous desert animal
was when I strolled to a nearby park
during the day.  Small park next to the desert in 3
directions.  Only one mom & her 2 kids were there on
  the play equipment.

I had JUST come from the grassy area of the park and then came back
to the pavillions, play area & exit when
the mom said "Hey Johnny...look at the baby Havalena."
Havalenas are essentially wild boars (or pigs) who'd love
to shred a dog apart.  I'd never seen one so I turned and
looked.  I was only maybe 30 short feet from it.

It was sniffing the bush my dog had only minutes before!  They
are nocturnal (night-time) animals so dunno
what he was doing up in the park in the daytime although dusk was
  45 minutes away.

I looked for 2 seconds and split since I was alone with my dog.
As I began rolling down the exit
road my hubby was just driving in with my van.  I got in and we
drove the lil ways to the small
parking lot so I could really LOOK at one.  But he was
  gone.

I asked my husband how dangerous that was and he said that maybe the
  baby was harmless but
where there is baby ... mama & papa aren't far behind!

The ongoing housing construction around here (1000s of homes &
subdivisions) is forcing desert animals out of their 'already smaller'
desert habitats around here as well (havalenas, coyotes, bobcats,
  etc)

My husband was out this Sunday morning and came racing home
to get me to see a Gila Monster in the wild.  (wild -
meaning not in a museum or on tv).  He was sunning himself in
the median of a busy road!

Even HE had not seen one live & up-close.  But it was too
late when we got there  :-(
We hoped he didn't get hit crossing the road as they are rather
  slow.  So either he did
make it or someone got him to take back safely to the desert.

THEY are the only poisonous lizard.  We see all kinds of "other"
little lizard dudes everywhere (salamander-size usually)
  Fast dudes!

Restrictions on the sale of meth precursors (products containing pseudoephedrine and ephedrine) have been an important issue since the passage of the Oklahoma law last session.  In an effort to reduce the meth problem, the state was the first to classify precursor products as Schedule V.  Now, in Oklahoma, only licensed pharmacists and pharmacy technicians are allowed to sell the drug.  All products must be kept behind the pharmacy counter and stores without pharmacies can no longer sell products containing pseudoephedrine.  Customers must show photo ID and sign a log to buy affected products.  Furthermore, sales are restricted to no more than nine grams in a 30-day period.  Several other states are considering Oklahoma-style legislation this year.  Texas is one of these states.
Pseudoephedrine (PSE) is a decongestant (reduces swelling in sinuses).  Over-the-counter drug products either contain pseudoephedrine as the sole active ingredient or in combination with other ingredients.  Single active ingredient pseudoephedrine products are most favored by meth cooks because they give them the highest yield and purity.
Product examples of single active ingredient pseudoephedrine:
• Sudafed and its generic equivalents.
• Contac 12-Hour Caplets

Re: [QUAD-L] blood pressure

2005-05-31 Thread David K. Kelmer
Hi Dana,

Antihistamines (Benadryl is a brand name) are used to relieve or prevent the symptoms of hay fever and other types of allergy.  They work by preventing the effects of a substance called histamine, which is produced by the body.  Histamine can cause itching, sneezing, runny nose, and watery eyes.  Also, in some persons histamine can close up the bronchial tubes (air passages of the lungs) and make breathing difficult.
Some of the antihistamines are also used to prevent motion sickness, nausea, vomiting, and dizziness.  In patients with Parkinson's disease, diphenhydramine may be used to decrease stiffness and tremors.  Also, the syrup form of diphenhydramine is used to relieve the cough due to colds or hay fever.  In addition, since antihistamines may cause drowsiness as a side effect, some of them may be used to help people go to sleep.

Silas, I'm fairly new to this list and I'm afraid every time I write something it stirs up a can of worms.
I didn't know much about stem cells til December when I read an article and got interested. I asked someone here at work what they do with the fetuses after they are aborted ( shows how dumb I am) and he said they incinerate them or throw them in the trash, and I thought what a waste. I work for a large University that has a large trauma center.
Most people do think they are given burials...maybe a few do but they are pretty far along...like 5 or 6 months. I had a miscarriage years ago at 5 months and it was very painful. The fetus was put in a jar of some sort of soultion. We were not given the option to bury it.
More people need to be made aware of what DOES happen to the fetuses. Maybe  then Bush will change his mind.

Laird Creates Video Production System For People with DisabilitiesNew Wheelchair Video Camera Mount Delivers Creative Accessibility
MOUNT MARION, NY — October 14, 2004 — Laird announced today the launch of a new system for mounting a video camera on a wheelchair.  This system, named VGO, gives a wheelchair user full control over their video camera.  This new wheelchair video system helps broadcasters, educators, AV and media departments meet ADA and Section 508 compliance in a new creative way.  “Up until now, the use of a video camera for someone in a wheelchair has been difficult if not impossible,” said Chase Pierson from DCTV.  “Laird has tackled and solved this problem by working with its engineering team, consultants, and from the personal experiences of our own employees who use assistive devices to access technology,” said Laird Director of Operations, Paku Misra.   The broadcast video wheelchair system comes equipped with a steel swing out arm and a camera tripod head mounted on it for safe and steady camera movement.  T!
 he arm
can easily swing out of the way when the user needs to enter or exit their wheelchair.  The entire system can be removed simply from the wheelchair by releasing the two locking knobs.  VGO is available with two choices of tripod heads:  Either a normal hand operated version or an electronic head that adds automatic controls of camera start, stop, record, lens focus and zoom as well as full pan and tilt capability.  All of these features are controlled from a cabled handheld remote.
I hope this helps.

We're getting way behind on stem cell research and you'll see people going overseas trying new surgeries where no laws protect them and some will have success and others come back worse off.
Researchers have their hands tied regardless of how they sugarcoat it and without Federal funds we'll fall further behind and we're saving nothing and losing everything.

I advertise in the local paper to find people and all the hippa laws make it so you can't find out any info about the previous places they worked. And there are so many buyouts of facilities its hard to find out if someone even worked where they said they do.We used to have a site at the local govt page that gave a list of people that had been arrested in the past 10 years and the offenses that was helpful but they changed it to people that are only in jail now.Its very hard to find any help at any price that is suitable and you can trust. I have 2 ladies that have been here 2 yrs now and one that has been here 6 months. I pay them $7.00 hr no taxes taken out. I checked with the labor  dept and the man said that we were in the class of "babysitters" that we don't even have to pay mininum wage. These 3 women I trust  and give the run of the house, But we need a 4th so that when one gets sick we have backup. this past week 2 were sick and one had a sister that was dying. Last week the other one quit...no notice. She was the backup we had. I think the main thing is fear. They are afraid of working with John since he can't speak and they have to spell with him to find out what he wants. It takes great patience and there is WORK involved. IMO, the answer to all of
your questions is that we have put to much faith and trust into a failing

create a new law that won't be enforced.  As a community we must pull our

Great points John!  Your last line is one I will
certainly begin using!  We have Stephanie (as one who is still with
us... others poofed after nursing home bound) who was forced into a
nursing home and a great example to begin!

It's getting too easy for many of us to sit behind the PCs
and roar without action... unlike Mark however.

Lori is right. We need to stick to issues we can help each other
with. Why does it take 3 months for an independent provider to get their
first pay check on the waiver system? Why does Ohio rank so low in
percentages of persons with SCI's living in the community. Why am i
expected to live in a nursing home? Why do nursing homes get paid from
Medicaid in 14 days? Who do I talk to when the politicians that represent
me can't see why i'm not happy, after all, I get the best parking
  places?

I actually would use these parking spots if they were
in the "back 40".  Hell, it might even reduce the number of BS placards
that get handed out.

John said "Who do I talk to when the politicians

places?" Well, I don't know the answer to your question, but as far as your
tongue-in-cheek comment regarding parking spaces, I'd gladly trade those for
reliable, competent care in an independent setting, but as we're most aware
that's a daily struggle for many on this list and a outright pipe dream for a
few (i.e. myself) others! :o)

[QUAD-L] ECTV/Breaking News - Geomagnetic Storm in Progress

Geomagnetic Storm in Progress

by Mitch Battros - ECTV

If you were thinking unusual weather has been occurring in your area, you
were right. A series of "record breaking" weather has hit just about every
continent on the Earth. Right here at the ECTV studios, an abrupt "weather
warning" was broadcast to warn people of severe heat as we climbed into the
90's in May. Normal temperature is approximately 63 Fahrenheit. Some areas
hit 'record lows' showing a 30 degree shift in temperatures.

The Sun sent off an M-Class flare on May 28th from sunspot region 767 with a
following CME that was Earth directed.

"All this makes life hell."

It definitely complicates our lives, but I
firmly believe that it is these challenges in our lives and how we handle them
that make us make us stronger than most.

Some of my favorite phrases regarding
this:

"What doesn't kill you makes you
stronger."
"Stumbling blocks and stepping stones are
exactly the same.  It's all a matter of how you look at
them."

   Hi Carol,

$6.50 is still not completely out of the picture as a wage in certain
states and small towns ESPECIALLY if they're given enough hours.  I
had an aide in NY (age 65 but energetic as a 25 yr-old) whom we paid
privately for $6.50.  She WANTED little jobs like I needed to keep
busy.  She moved to N.C. and hasn't found anyone TO work for!
Geeez.. she HAS the work ethic but moved to a place where all needy
people are in asst living, nursing homes, etc.

We miss her and she misses us.  But she's 71 now and last time
we spoke she was diagnosed with some odd condition.

I'm really eligible for 35 visits a week (under MediCARE) but am
lucky to get 10.  You're lucky to get 40 hrs!!!

I live in a big town (Tucson, AZ - million people) and aides want AT
LEAST $10/hour.  I pay my one reliable aide that amount to work
privately on Sundays for housework AFTER she finishes my health care that
the agency pays.  She's here anyway so doesn't mind.

I had one aide a year ago who had another patient pass away.
Her patient had tons of chux so she brought them to us.  So we're set
  on those.

  All this makes life hell.

   Lori, we live in
Kentucky and are going to be dropped off the waiver because Home Health
doesn't have anyone qualified to do respite with John...of which we only
get 31 hours every six months. If you live someplace that provides home
health services better..great.We were promised chux over a month ago
and have not gotten them yet. Home health is a joke.I did get John on
a personal care attendant program and we are allowed 40 hrs a week at
$6.50 hr. Do you know anyone who will work for that? He needs 90 hrs a
week care. so we have to pay the difference. We are very lucky if people
whow up at all.The work ethic is gone .Carol

I've got a lot of these
attendant type emails I want to respond to, so  bear with me as I catch
up.

I believe that a lot of
us get into the position where we feel that there is not a lot we can do about
attendants not showing up or performing their job thoroughly.  We get into
a mindset of being employers when most of us have no idea how to employ, manage
or handle the HR side of things.  I've spent many hours discussing this
dilemma with my CEO father-in-law.   He told me a few gems that I take
with me when I look for new attendants.  1) Treat it like a job not a
friendship.  2) Do not guilt them into working. (That will come around
to bite you)  3) Have consequences and follow through with them.  4)
Write up detailed lists of what you want done on a daily basis.  5) Find
out what drives them to work and cater towards that.  6) Pay or compensate
fairly.

Each of these can be
defined individually for each of us.  It sounds like you're in the
wonderful Visiting Nurses (non)care program.  Talk about a system that
needs an overhaul.  I agree that you have to have them, but I'd have the
attendant you have there till 9 complete a list of things each day.  You
could even break it down to pay per task on the list.  I've even put dollar
values next to each task for my money-driven attendants.

Hi Everybody,
Happy Memorial Day!
I have to pay a LPN 6.50$ an hr 3 nights a week to
sleep.  Lol.  She turns me and caths one time, helps start my bath
then leaves for work leaving me half done till the other nurse gets here at 8.
I  also pay a aid 300$ a month to help shower, he can't do nothing by his
self (or won't ) so he aggravates the hell out of me till he leaves around 9.
But what can I do about it, not a dam thing.  I have to have them.
