From: Lana Baugh [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 06, 2005 11:59 PM To: 'Jeremy Dickinson' Subject: RE: [QUAD-L] Transportation Jeremy, I’m a parent. Bug your parents. Maybe if they drive it enough they will eventually let your nurses drive the van. Sometimes you need to advocate for yourself inside the family as well as outside of it. Maybe you could involve someone to help you advocate with your parents. The Medicaid Transportation system is drying up in a lot of states. They may not have a choice in the future. My son’s aides drive his van. Yes, it is a risk. I wish you the best of luck. i think you are right on luke. ANYONE who doesn't walk a mile in our shoes can easily provide bad advice. i've had medical people suggest that i work out and build up my strength ya know, if i have one out of a hundred motor nerves working, i'm thinking i'll probably have 1/100 of my normal strength. and maybe 2/100 if i work real hard - big whoopie. and in the process i'l likely tear a weaker link somewhere else. i'm of the "you have only so many heartbeats to last you - exercising only uses them up faster" use the input from your quad buddies - we know the real score. dave [EMAIL PROTECTED] wrote: hey guys i need some help with my essay. would you mind reading my intro and telling me what you think i could do do improve the writing or if you think it's just shit? i'm not trying to suggest that all professionals are wrong in telling people to use a manual wheelchair but i was told many times by a lot of people that i should push a manual chair (which i am forced to do right now because my electric is out of commission) and a few month after i agreed i started having horrible shoulder pain. i even had one pt tell me that pushing through the grass was good for my arms, I didn't even have triceps. but let me know what you guys think Luke Being paralyzed and in a wheelchair, a person has to learn how to do many things through trial and error or from professionals. Re: [QUAD-L] Hands free Phone
I just talked with a guy at Kyocera and he said "Yes it is 100% hands free...If you have it plugged in.) I thought of having a cigarette lighter plug put on my chair just for something like that. He said most of the ones that have voice commands can do it hands free with power. QuadPirate, does yours need to be plugged in ? Greg

RE: [QUAD-L] Transportation
My recommendation (what I did for 7 years) is to find someone or several someone's that your parents can train to drive the way they want and pay them a nominal hourly fee to chauffeur you. I had 3 main friends that my parents trained on use of my/our van. I now offer $8/hr (pick what you can afford, I also barter for rides) to any of about a dozen people to chauffeur me when my van is in the shop and I'm stuck in a rental. Good luck! The 'rents are always a tough nut to crack ;) From: Jeremy Dickinson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Thursday, October 06, 2005 6:31 PMTo: quadlistSubject: [QUAD-L] Transportation What do you guys do for transportation? I had bladder stones a few months after my accident. They crushed them with a pair of tiny pliers inserted like catheter. Then bladder was flushed with continual flow catheter of some sort. [QUAD-L] Fwd: Call on Representatives Bill Thomas and Nancy Johnson to Reauthorize the...
Please call the representatives listed below to reauthorize the Q. I. that assists poor, elderly and disabled to pay premiums which will be going up.Dana --- Begin Message --- Asclepios Your Weekly Medicare Consumer Advocacy Update ACT NOW: Call on Representatives Bill Thomas and Nancy Johnson to Reauthorize the QI Program October 6, 2005 • Volume 5, Issue 40 Unless the U.S. House of Representatives acts soon, thousands of older adults and people with disabilities are going to see their health care costs go through the roof. Last Friday, the House of Representatives took the weekend off as a federal program that pays the $78.20 monthly Medicare Part B premiums for low-income Americans expired. The Qualifying Individual program (QI) allows more than 185,000 of the poorest Americans to afford Medicare out-patient health coverage. QI re-authorization was passed with broad bi-partisan support in the Senate. The Bush Administration supports it--in fact it boasted about the program in news releases defending the record premium increases that people with Medicare face come January 1. That’s when premiums jump to $88.50 a month. To the House leadership, QI is not a priority. We need to ask those men and women, why? If the program dies, the consequences for many of the 185,000 impoverished participants in the program will be catastrophic. With a $13,000 annual income, imagine paying an extra $1,000 a year in health insurance premiums. New questions will take over the lives of American men and women, people living with disabilities, people facing the fears and deprivation of poverty in old age. What is more important: health care for congestive heart failure or buying food at the grocery store? Pay the heating bill or go to the doctor to treat diabetes? Further, the QI program automatically enrolls people in the Administration’s Extra Help Program that pays the out-of-pocket costs of the Medicare drug benefit that will be unaffordable to poor Americans. By failing to reauthorize QI, the House will make it even harder for low-income people with Medicare to fill their prescriptions in 2006. The Senate, led by Republican Senate Finance Committee Chairman Charles Grassley reauthorized the QI program last week with broad bi-partisan support. Senator Grassley holds broad respect among his constituents in Iowa, and indeed among the American people across the nation, because he remains aware of the realities of human need. The dysfunctional House of Representatives seemed too occupied last week discussing the criminal indictment of its Majority Leader, Tom Delay, Republican of Texas, to attend to the business of the American people—this from what was once known as the “people’s House.” Today, there are reports that the House leadership may pay attention, and will look to connect QI reauthorization to programs promoting sexual abstinence. Oh my. House Ways and Means Chairman Bill Thomas and the House Ways and Means Committee’s Health Subcommittee Chair Nancy Johnson need to be reminded that now is not the time to let the QI program expire. Click here to send an e-mail message or letter telling Representatives Nancy Johnson and Bill Thomas to reauthorize the QI program. Medical Record Beginning in January 2006, the Medicare Part B premium will increase 13.2 percent to $88.50 a month ($1,062 annually), up from this year’s monthly premium of $78.20. Medicare Part B covers services such as doctors’ visits, laboratory tests, and outpatient care. The QI program covers people between 120 to 135 percent of the poverty level, and assets below $4,000 for an individual and $6,000 for a couple in most states (Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services and U.S. Department of Health and Human Services). More than 185,000 low-income people with Medicare are enrolled in the Qualified Individual-1 program that pays for their Medicare Part B premium. A number of states including Connecticut, New York and Mississippi are dangerously close spending more than the federal block grant for the QI program (Medicare Rights Center). Medicare beneficiaries with lower incomes are generally in poorer health than those with higher incomes. While 43 percent of beneficiaries with incomes less than 100 percent of the federal poverty level describe their own health as either fair or poor, only 17 percent of those with incomes above 300 percent of poverty do so. You get a beep and say it again. Then it ask for a name. Say a name in your phone book. Then it calls the number. It's pretty simple. No buttons. No Dana no buttons involved. The voice software is in the phone not the service provider so it doesn't matter who you use. [QUAD-L] Fwd: NSCIA Newsletter National call-in to legislators in 1877-224-0041
Dana (C 4-5, 31 years post, 51, KC) --- Begin Message --- Title: NSCIA E-News 2005 Act Today: Join Access to Mobility Call-In Day Thursday, October 6, 2005 On Thursday, October 6, 2005, individuals can join Access to Mobility Call-In Day by 1-877-224-0041 (TOLL FREE). Ask the Capitol Operator to connect you to your Senators and Representatives to ask them to support efforts to improve access to mobility devices for people with disabilities. Specifically, the Independence Through Enhancement of Medicare and Medcaid (ITEM) Coalition suggests you request that your Members of Congress: Support all efforts to maintain appropriate access to mobility and other assistive devices; Contact CMS and encourage the agency to remove the in the home restriction on mobility devices which confined people in need of wheelchairs to their homes; and Support any potential legislation to remove the in the home restriction should such a fix become necessary. Over the last several months, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS) have issued a series of Medicare policies that severely restrict access to mobility devices. We need to let Members of Congress know that CMS's actions are impacting the health and independence of people with disabilities! At the heart of the problem is CMS' commitment to the in the home restriction which prevents beneficiaries from receiving devices they need to move past their front doors. Earlier this year, as CMS revised it wheelchair coverage policy, the agency had the opportunity to reconsider this restriction. However, CMS chose to maintain the in the home rule, making it clear that Medicare will not cover wheelchairs that many beneficiaries need to live independently and access their communities. The ITEM Coalition is encouraging all members and friends to participate in an Access to Mobility Call-In Day. Throughout the day, individuals are encouraged to call their Senators and Representatives and ask them to support efforts to improve access to mobility devices for people with disabilities.
