RE: [QUAD-L] rehab doctor/weight/everything etc....

2008-04-03 Thread Joan Anglin
I finally found a rehab Dr. about 18 months ago, and after three visits she
moved out of town J Santa Clara rehab is about 4 to 5 hours away, so I just
see a plain old Dr.. My Dr. Is actually a second year resident at UNR
Medical school, and I really like the concept. Not only do I get one doctors
information, they have to report daily to their supervising team and they
get input from them. It is very workable.

I was 5 foot six and about 160 pounds when I broke my neck 17 and half years
ago. Am I now 5 foot six? But I weigh about 132. I got down to about 115
which was way too thin, but I have no problem staying between 125 and 135. I
average around 1000 calories, which includes a protein shake every day. I am
very badly lactose intolerant, but I have learned to live without all my
favorite cheeses.

I have absolutely no motion or movement beyond a shoulder shrug. My hands
are flaccid, which I think is better than clenched.

I’ve got a great life, and tomorrow is my 69th birthday, which we will
celebrate with all my family. I’m getting a new German shepherd puppy from
Salzburg, She will not be arriving until June, but I can hardly wait. It’s
been several years since I’ve trained a dog-I was a professional dog handler
from 1960 to 1977, and was fortunate enough to be able to show all over
Europe and England. This is going to be so much fun J J

Have a great day

Merril,

I hate to say it, but Mikey3 is right and I think you might be getting some
bad advice. [Emphasize "might"] By the time my MRSA was a problem for me,
in other words it was part of a sore, I immediately had to go on IV
antibiotics. I used a PICC line for six weeks to infuse vancomycin in 2006.
When it reemerged in 2007 my body wasn't handling Vanco very well so I had
to use another PICC line another 6 weeks with Rocefin (sp?).

After using the Vanco in 2006 a small sore about the size of a dime opened
on my low leg far from my original infection. That was able to be
successfully treated with a combination of oral Bactrim (sulfa) and
Doxycycline (in the tetracycline family) over 14 days.

Because of my two major outbreaks and the bone involvement I'm now on what
is expected to be a lifetime of Bactrim or some oral antibiotic. If it
reemerges in the same place I'll likely be looking at a hemipelvectomy...
the removal of half my pelvis and the leg on that side. Even a successful
surgery of this kind is extremely risky, takes about six surgeons, and has a
terrible record of post surgical infection, necrosis and even death.

If you can, I'd suggest getting a second opinion perhaps by someone outside
the VA.

Please understand I'm not trying to scare you or anybody else. Just letting
you know my experiences and that of other people I've known who've had
similar situations.

Best regards (and best health!),
Tod

Has the sore been cultured and a sensitivity test done? No one can look at
a sore and say you have a MRSA infection.

I HAVE AN OPEN WOUND THAT HAS HAD MRSA TWICE. My doc treated it both times,
once with iv and once with pills. I've never had any symptoms - sores, etc.
If it is responsive to an antibiotic, I would treat it. My sister-in-law got
a small cut on her foot two years ago. It refused to heal. To make a long
story short, it was mrsa. It dissolved the bones and tendons in the foot and
went systemic. She was delirious for a week and nearly died. They even
installed a direct port. As of now, doc says the foot must go. She still has
the germ in her bloodstream. Bad. She is a nurse, able-bodied, and cut her
foot on a wheelchair at work. She works for HCA in Nashville and has had to
fight tooth-and-nail for worker's comp. The irony is she is a nurse yet
didn't get help until the infection was advanced. She thought she was
invincible - but has certainly learned differently.
On a different note, my great aunt died yesterday. She was 98 and still
sharp as a tac.

MRSA will show up in blood cultures or when a sore is cultured. The doctor
should always do a culture/sensitivity test to determine which antibiotic
would best kill the infection.

Here's something else you should know: Methicillin: A semisynthetic
penicillin-related antibiotic, also known as Staphcillin, that once was
effective against staphylococci (staph) resistant to penicillin because they
produce the enzyme penicillinase. Rarely used now, methicillin has been
largely superceded by Vancomycin. Over the past 50 years, staph bacteria
have become resistant to various antibiotics, including the commonly used
penicillin-related antibiotics, including methicillin. These resistant
bacteria are called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

There are other antibiotics that can kill a non-MRSA infection like Keflex,
Keflon (the IV form of Keflex) and Cipro.

a PICC line for six weeks to infuse vancomycin in 2006. When it reemerged in
2007 my body wasn't handling Vanco very well so I had to use another PICC line
another 6 weeks with Rocefin (sp?).

After using the Vanco in 2006 a small sore about the size of a dime opened on
my low leg far from my original infection. That was able to be successfully
treated with a combination of oral Bactrim (sulfa) and Doxycycline (in the
tetracycline family) over 14 days.

Because of my two major outbreaks and the bone involvement I'm now on what is
expected to be a lifetime of Bactrim or some oral antibiotic. If it reemerges
in the same place I'll likely be looking at a hemipelvectomy... the removal of
half my pelvis and the leg on that side. Even a successful surgery of this
kind is extremely risky, takes about six surgeons, and has a terrible record of
post surgical infection, necrosis and even death.

If you can, I'd suggest getting a second opinion perhaps by someone outside the
VA.

Please understand I'm not trying to scare you or anybody else. Just letting
you know my experiences and that of other people I've known who've had similar
situations.

Best regards (and best health!),
Tod

Has the sore been cultured and a sensitivity test done? No one can look at a
sore and say you have a MRSA infection.

Sore was cultured +, as well as an incision yet opened post two years after
surgery cultured last Thanksgiving. The areas are photographed monthly but
there is no intent of antibiotics. I can keep the size and spreading down
by being in bed. The openings will grow as the weather warms. During the
summer I need to return to bed shortly after noon, then I need to be in bed
24 hours near every other day.

Re: [QUAD-L] MRSA

2008-04-03 Thread Tod E. Santee
Hi Merril,

I'm not sure if one of the many responses he got so far have mentioned this yet
but studies to show that between 1/3 and 1/2 of all nurses and other employees
and medical institutions are colonized with MRSA. Many, many people in the
community carry MRSA... primarily in the nose... yet never contract any
infections.

Hospitals are a major breeding ground for MRSA and many of the cleaning
solutions that use don't remain active long enough to kill it (although there
have been some new long-lasting silver-based cleaning products that show some
hope). Even though they clean hospital rooms relatively well between patients
all you have to do is look at the blood pressure cuffs and electronic devices
moving from one room to the next to the next, etc., watch a nurse take a pencil
from a pocket and write down stats then put it back even if you're in isolation
and everybody wears gloves.

I have asked nurses and doctors many times to change gloves if I arrive for an
appointment in a stretcher and they use a gloved hand to unbuckle belts and
lower the side. So many other people have used a stretcher and so many other
people have touched it that I absolutely DO NOT want a gloved hand that touched
it getting anywhere near an open wound! (I will say that both doctors and
nurses do get a bit indignant about it because "they know what they're
doing"... but tough nuggets.)

Also, since I've had MRSA since 2006 in both bone and wound tissue, I have been
very conscious to make sure people remove gloves immediately after touching
anything near my wound before they touch anything else. The messages are
making it to the larger medical population.

Now that there's Community-Associated MRSA it's people who get tattoos and
piercings who need to be conscious about the same things. Now THEY need to
treat those facilities and the people who run them as strictly as they would if
they were in a hospital room.

Hope this information is useful to you and anybody else on the list.

Best regards,
Tod E. Santee

Las month I was cultured as a MRSA carrier. MRSA is a resistant infection
which is spreading in hospitals. Apparently I am only a carrier but suspicious
looking circular sores are developing on my inner thighs. I have read about
this but have never spoken with anyone who has or had it.

One person had it and lost a foot. My doctors will not treat it as they
believe it will only become further resistance. Have a story?

[QUAD-L] One last wasy to wash a cat

2008-04-03 Thread MikeyBird3
1. Know that although the kitty cat has the advantage of quickness and lack
of concern for human life, you have the advantage of strength. Capitalize on
that advantage by selecting the battlefield. Don't try to bathe him in an
open area where he can force you to chase him. Pick a very small bathroom. If
your bathroom is more than four feet square, we recommend that you get in the
tub with the cat and close the sliding-glass doors as if you were about to
take a shower. (A simple shower curtain will not do. A berserk cat can shred a
three-ply rubber shower curtain quicker than a politician can shift
positions.)

2. Know that a cat has claws and will not hesitate to remove all the skin
from your body. Your advantage here is that you are smart and know how to
dress
to protect yourself. We recommend canvas overalls tucked into high-top
construction boots, a pair of steel-mesh gloves, an army helmet, a hockey
face-mask, and a long-sleeved flak jacket.

3. Use the element of surprise. Pick up your cat nonchalantly, as if to
simply carry him to his supper dish. (Cats will not usually notice your
strange
attire. They have little or no interest in fashion as a rule.)

4. Once you are inside the bathroom, speed is essential to survival. In a
single liquid motion, shut the bathroom door, step into the tub enclosure,
slide the glass door shut, dip the cat in the water and squirt him with
shampoo.
You have now begun one of the wildest 45 seconds of your life.

5. Cats have no handles. Add the fact that he now has soapy fur, and the
problem is radically compounded. Do not expect to hold on to him for more than
two or three seconds at a time. When you have him, however, you must remember
to give him another squirt of shampoo and rub like crazy. He'll then spring
free and fall back into the water, thereby rinsing himself off. (The national
record for cats is three latherings, so don't expect too much.)

6. Next, the cat must be dried. Novice cat bathers always assume this part
will be the most difficult, for humans generally are worn out at this point
and the cat is just getting really determined. In fact, the drying is simple
compared with what you have just been through. That's because by now the cat
is
semi-permanently affixed to your right leg.

7. You simply pop the drain plug with your foot, reach for your towel and
wait. (Occasionally, however, the cat will end up clinging to the top of your
army helmet. If this happens, the best thing you can do is to shake him loose
and to encourage him toward your leg.) After all the water is drained from
the tub, it is a simple matter to just reach down and dry the cat.

In a few days the cat will relax enough to be removed from your leg. He will
usually have nothing to say for about three weeks and will spend a lot of
time sitting with his back to you. He might even become psychoceramic and
develop the fixed stare of a plaster figurine.

You will be tempted to assume he is angry. This isn't usually the case. As a
rule he is simply plotting ways to get through your defenses and injure you
for life the next time you decide to give him a bath. But at least now he
smells a lot better.

[QUAD-L] Washing kitty

2008-04-03 Thread MikeyBird3
Remember this is a joke. No cats ere harmed during the writing of this.

Step One

Put both lids of the toilet up and add 1/8 cup of pet shampoo to the water
in the bowl.

Step Two

Pick up the cat and soothe him while you carry him towards the bathroom.

Step Three

In one smooth movement, put the cat in the toilet and close both lids. (You
may need to stand on the lid.)

Step Four

The cat will self agitate and make ample suds. Never mind the noises that
come from the toilet -- the cat is actually enjoying this.

Step Five

Flush the toilet three or four times. This provides a "power-wash" as well
as a "rinse".

Step Six

Have someone open the front door of your home. Be sure that there is no one
and nothing between the bathroom door and the front door.

Step Seven

Stand behind the toilet as far as you can, and quickly lift both lids.

Step Eight

The cat will rocket out of the toilet, streak through the bathroom, and run
outside where he will dry himself off.

Results

Both the commode and the cat will be sparkling clean.

Consequences

A very hissed off cat.

FW: [QUAD-L] MRSA

2008-04-03 Thread William Willis

I HAVE AN OPEN WOUND THAT HAS HAD MRSA TWICE. My doc treated it both times,
once with iv and once with pills. I've never had any symptoms - sores, etc. If
it is responsive to an antibiotic, I would treat it. My sister-in-law got a
small cut on her foot two years ago. It refused to heal. To make a long story
short, it was mrsa. It dissolved the bones and tendons in the foot and went
systemic. She was delirious for a week and nearly died. They even installed a
direct port. As of now, doc says the foot must go. She still has the germ in
her bloodstream. Bad. She is a nurse, able-bodied, and cut her foot on a
wheelchair at work. She works for HCA in Nashville and has had to fight
tooth-and-nail for worker's comp. The irony is she is a nurse yet didn't get
help until the infection was advanced. She thought she was invincible - but has
certainly learned differently.
On a different note, my great aunt died yesterday. She was 98 and still sharp
as a tac.

MRSA will show up in blood cultures or when a sore is cultured. The doctor
should always do a culture/sensitivity test to determine which antibiotic would
best kill the infection.

Here's something else you should know: Methicillin: A semisynthetic
penicillin-related antibiotic, also known as Staphcillin, that once was
effective against staphylococci (staph) resistant to penicillin because they
produce the enzyme penicillinase. Rarely used now, methicillin has been largely
superceded by Vancomycin. Over the past 50 years, staph bacteria have become
resistant to various antibiotics, including the commonly used
penicillin-related antibiotics, including methicillin. These resistant bacteria
are called methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus, or MRSA.

[QUAD-L] Airline Horror Stories?

2008-04-03 Thread wheelchair
Welcome Back Todd! I hope you continue to post on your personal
experiences. I'm sure that Breezy is alive and well with her husband,
somewhere in
Florida, with her pitbulls. Do you remember DTXNews, Sue as well as she used
to
post a lot here. Each year we pick up another generation of newbies and some
thought provoking stories of how it happen and how its changed their lives.

Regarding your experience... I hope it never happens again. I hope it never
happens to anyone... ever.
But we both know that it can happen and when it does, the first thing you do
is file a report with the airlines about the damage and how it will affect
your life, being as graphic as you can. If the worse doesn't occur, all the
best. Because as you have witnessed, it can and often does happen.

I've seen old cases that went before a review board, and nothing in the
original damage report was referenced to what could happen if repairs and
replacement didn't happen within a specified time. The industry can used that
against you in their defense as saying "we didn't know or couldn't perceive
the
future." For this reason, it is most important to spell it out in the very
first report. This way the ball will always be in the air industry's court.

Again, glad to read that you are back Teach!

I was traveling in 2005. My wheelchair had simple, laminated instructions
on how to move it and lock it using the "clutches" because I always remove the
armrest with the joystick that powers the chair.

Sometime between surrendering my chair at the airport and unloading the
chair when I arrived at my destination (luckily home), it turned out somebody
didn't read the neon signs indicating the use of clutches. My 17 inch wide
wheelchair became a 14 inch chair! In other words, it was crushed.

Re: [QUAD-L] rehab doctor/weight/everything etc....

2008-04-03 Thread Stacy Harim
I see my rehab doctor about every 3 months. He is also a spasticity doctor. I
struggle with my weight. I was heavy before the chair, lost some then gained
again a few times. I gained more after I broke my back because I dont get as
much movement. I have to watch everything I eat to lose it and it's hard to
watch everything I eat on such a strict budget but I try. It's mostly my belly
and I am sure a lot of you can relate as there is no muscle control there.

First of all- how many of you are excessively skinny? I have been told by my

2008-04-03 Thread Merrill Burghardt
My doctors refuse to treat my MRSA. I have the sore which they monitor but
still believe I am better left not treated. What do you think?

The sore is managed ONLY by keeping in bed treating the sore on my inner
thigh as a heat rash which it is not. My healthcare is VA, think I should
just watch the sore grow or treat the MRSA?

I haven't wore a binder since I was a fairly new injury some nineteen years
