Congratulations Joan!  I am 51 years old, and I'm also a C4.  I am five years
post accident.  They gave me 10 years give-or-take.  The quad list sure has
made me think otherwise.  A lot of people have been quads past 10 years.  I had
always been in good shape, and still feel that I am.  It's a little scary, I
don't want to out live my husband because then I won't have a caregiver and
will probably end up in a nursing home.  I think that's my greatest fear.  What
is your living situation?

Today is a day to celebrate.  20 years ago at 2:30 PM I fell off of some
scaffolding and fell 10 feet-that was just enough to make me a C4 complete.
But considering that I was told that I probably wouldn’t live a normal life
line time wise I have proved them wrong and plan to do so for the next 10 years
at least!  I have had the joy of seeing four more grandchildren-age 13 on
down-and two great grandchildren.  My health is excellent, I can still be
active and my favorite line is “I still haven’t figured out what I want to be
when I grow up”.  So at 71 I look forward to an anticipated fantastic next 10
years and am looking forward to all the new inventions that will help most of
us live better lives that I could have ever dreamed possible 20 years ago.
Many thanks for this list, it has enabled me to learn more about what’s new and
shaking.  Joan

I have never gotten any return, even though I’m really motivated and still
exercise religiously! But if nothing else it has kept my muscles from
atrophying and I still have good skin circulation. I have gotten some feeling
back, not on the surface, but when pressed firmly I can feel in many areas.
Each one of us are so different that it is no wonder doctors are confused on
how to treat our individual problems.

I don’t need to be fixed, but I sure would like the use of one arm to scratch

Have a great day. Joan

Debbie,
My husband is also my soul 24/7 care giver and i don't want to out live
him either. I to believe I will need to go into a nursing home if I out live
him. I live in Northern New Jersey and if I were to go into a nursing home I
plan on moving upstate New York. Why, you might be asking, because the care
givers that would be taking care of me would be from the immediate area. In my
location that would be people from Newark which is an inner city and I just
would not be comfortable. By moving upstate New York the care givers would be
locals from a small town community, and my older brother and youngest sister
live up there.
I'm C 5,6,7 36 years post and my body is really feeling the years in the

I agree with you, going to a nursing home is my greatest fear also. I
don't have a husband, but that is the fear that my mother, siblings and best

homes were not what we had to fear. I lived in one of three years after my
parents divorced and it is not a good place to keep a quadriplegic both
