Re: [QUAD-L] Anniversary
Congratulations Joan! I am 51 years old, and I'm also a C4. I am five years post accident. They gave me 10 years give-or-take. The quad list sure has made me think otherwise. A lot of people have been quads past 10 years. I had always been in good shape, and still feel that I am. It's a little scary, I don't want to out live my husband because then I won't have a caregiver and will probably end up in a nursing home. I think that's my greatest fear. Congrats! I am 50 on Tuesday, my 21st yr as C-4 was 8/12, hang tough and we might be fixed yet lol. If not at least we've persevered right! I've regained some slowly, driving wc with quad-style joystick, have some strength in both arams, not lots but had 0 for quite awhile. RE: [QUAD-L] Anniversary
I have never gotten any return, even though I’m really motivated and still exercise religiously! But if nothing else it has kept my muscles from atrophying and I still have good skin circulation. I have gotten some feeling back, not on the surface, but when pressed firmly I can feel in many areas. Each one of us are so different that it is no wonder doctors are confused on how to treat our individual problems. I don’t need to be fixed, but I sure would like the use of one arm to scratch myself where it itches. J Have a great day. Joan
Re: [QUAD-L] Anniversary
Debbie, My husband is also my soul 24/7 care giver and i don't want to out live him either. I to believe I will need to go into a nursing home if I out live him. I live in Northern New Jersey and if I were to go into a nursing home I plan on moving upstate New York. Why, you might be asking, because the care givers that would be taking care of me would be from the immediate area. In my location that would be people from Newark which is an inner city and I just would not be comfortable. By moving upstate New York the care givers would be locals from a small town community, and my older brother and youngest sister live up there. I'm C 5,6,7 36 years post and my body is really feeling the years in the chair. I spent all of July August in bed and just this morning was informed that I'm going to have to wray in again at least a few weeks. Debbie and Bobbie, I agree with you, going to a nursing home is my greatest fear also. I don't have a husband, but that is the fear that my mother, siblings and best friend , aunt and uncle that I am close to don't die first. I wish nursing homes were not what we had to fear. I lived in one of three years after my parents divorced and it is not a good place to keep a quadriplegic both physically and mentally Dana C4-5 complete, 36 years post 1974, 57 years old KC suburb.
