TAKE ACTION NOW!
CALL Senator Moran at (202) 224-6521. Tell the Senator's staff:
I am calling to support Senator Johanns' amendment in the Appropriations
Committee to the Department of Labor appropriation that would prevent the
Department of Labor from finalizing, implementing or enforcing changes to the
Companionship Exemption that would hurt people with disabilities and the
workers who provide us with services and supports to live independently in
the community! Please urge the Senator to support this amendment.
BACKGROUND:
The Department of Labor (DOL) has proposed changes in federal labor rules
that will hurt people with disabilities and attendants who support our
independence. These changes will most seriously impact people who have the
most
significant disabilities and rely on Medicaid services to live in the
community and their attendants.
In short, the proposed changes will:
- Force seniors and people with disabilities into  institutions;
- Cut the take-home pay of attendants;
- Reduce the  attendant workforce;
- Force people with disabilities to cut the hours of trusted attendants
and bring strangers into their homes; and
- Devastate consumer directed attendant programs.
Many national disability organizations -- including ADAPT, the National
Council on Independent Living (NCIL), and the National Council on Disability
(NCD) -- have raised concerns about these proposed changes and urged the
Department of Labor to work with the disability community to resolve them.
Instead of acknowledging the issue and working with the Disability Community
to resolve it, the Department of Labor has continued to push ahead with
these changes. (You can learn more about this issue at _www.DOLoffMYbody.org_
(http://www.doloffmybody.org/) )
TODAY, Senator Johanns will be submitting an amendment to the Department
of Labor's appropriation that prevents DOL from finalizing, implementing or
enforcing these changes until concerns about the proposed rules have been
addressed.
SO PLEASE TAKE ACTION, call Senator Moran at (202) 224-6521 and tell the
staff:
I am calling to support Senator Johanns' amendment in the Appropriations
Committee to the Department of Labor appropriation that would prevent the
Department of Labor from finalizing, implementing or enforcing changes to the
Companionship Exemption that would hurt people with disabilities and the
workers who provide us with services and supports to live independently in
the community! Please urge the Senator to support his amendment.
AFTER YOU CALL...
Share this alert with family and friends and urge them to call as well.
Then email us back and share how your call went.
Thank you!

These are my top 5 things I hate about being a Quad.

1. Having someone else prepare food for YOU their way.

2. Getting up and in bed when your aid can make it, not when you wish to.

3. People telling me ... how lucky you are not to have to work.

4. Limited selection of clothing.

5. Aging and Quadrum.

[QUAD-L] How to advise a negative disabled neighbor?

2013-07-11 Thread Gmail
Hi All,
I have a neighbor, Jill, who lives across the hall and is 57. She has a
debilitating progressive illness and is in quite a bit of pain. Yesterday I
went to visit her and met and aid that she has now who is a bundle of sunshine
and genuinely kind and considerate. Jill has complained about every single aid
she has ever had and now she is complaining to me about the aid I just met.
I'm trying to tell her how to be positive to get the positive back to make
a bad situation better, but she does not see this. Does anybody know of an
example or a story I can tell her that will wake her up and see that what she
has is great And not to take it for granted? Jill is constantly looking for the
greener side of the grass and not seeing how greenIs right now. I tried to tell
her that it could be so very much more worse.
Jill is so very very close to be entering a nursing home for the rest of her
life. This afternoon she had a bad bowel accident in her bathroom and is just
devastated and degradingly embarrassed as we all know.
I'm thinking that tomorrow would be a better time to talk to her. But I'm
asking you all if you can tell me any kind of magic story for her?

[QUAD-L] Dawn and her van

2013-07-11 Thread Gmail
Hi All,
There is another young girl here a Quad C67, Dawn, who is having a lot
of problems with her van. The ramp part of her minivan is not working properly
so whenever she goes out she… Slam down to the ground, Then she calls my Pete
and asks him to lift the ramp up to so she can close the door. She is going to
be getting this ramp fixed Tuesday next week, But insists on continuing to go
out and use the ramp and the van.
Pete and I have talked to her till we are blue in the face about not using
the van or the ramp because by using it she is going to make the ramp worse.
How do Pete and I help, or not help, these 2 ladies who are in need?

2013-07-11 Thread wheelchair
If the situation is that grave I would practice talking to a bare wall
first. A baby chick must first crack the shell of the egg before they can
breakout and see the world. Some people just feel comfortable within the
shell of their own eggs. But then again, there are differences between
neighbors and aids, in relation to taking care of someone's body vs someone's
mind. Good Luck
Best Wishes

You cant keep letting this woman use you and your husband. She is not a
child...if the vans broke you stay home until its fixed. Asking to help
once or twice is acceptable, more than that is taking advantage of the
situation. If I recall, this woman also uses Pete to be her shovel bitch all
winter without a thank you. Disabled or not she needs some lessons in common
courtesy.
