Interesting.

I met a woman just yesterday who is plus 40, with MS onset that began just
2 years ago. Before that she was without symptoms. Today, she lives by
herself, with a powered wheelchair and very depressed. I tried to refer her
to a CIL, MS Support Groups and Voc Rehab. I hope the best for her, but I
doubt that she will follow up on my suggestion. She appeared to have some
home care, but I don't think she has much support.

[QUAD-L] Fw: SCI Project

2014-03-27 Thread Don Price
Passing this along:

Good afternoon,

I’m writing to you today to discuss a project that I recently initiated - SCI
Video Blog. As the name suggests, it’s a video hub for all the spinal cord
patients around the world. SCI Video Blog is a collection of tutorial videos
posted by SCI patients of all different levels of injury to visually
demonstrate how they perform their daily life activities. The website would
allow the new patients to search for videos based on their level of injury,
ASIA level, completeness of the injury, and SCI complications, among other
things. The website would also allow writers and bloggers to share with the
world their knowledge or story. For patients or family members with a language
barrier, the website would allow subtitles in many languages as well.

To make this happen, we're looking forward to building a team with individuals
who would be willing to help the SCI community all around the globe. We're also
looking for SCI individuals who would be willing to contribute with their
homemade videos and/or articles related to SCI, and organizations which could
bridge such individuals with this project. We would be able to provide an email
address and a profile page for the contributors on our domain name. (e.g.
x...@scivideoblog.com). In order to focus better on the needs of the SCI
individuals, we have put together a 2-3 minutes survey. I would really
appreciate it if  you could fill it out and forward it to other SCI
individuals. The link to the survey is:
https://docs.google.com/forms/d/1F0cT75bS5jmQ4OvD9HPK-VKTjqlKT-X87_XvMzyqJa0/viewform.

I would really appreciate if you could help us reach out to SCI patients and
potential volunteers, and get this project started. This would help the entire
SCI community tremendously. If you have any comments or suggestions, or would
like to be a part of our team, please don’t hesitate to contact me.

[QUAD-L] Pain medicine

2014-03-27 Thread jume9999
I heard Dr. Sanjay Gupta say that pain medicine over time induces pain. I
always suspected that was true but never heard a Dr. admit it. I have noticed
it myself. I am not judging anyone here but what are your experiences? Do you
feel that pain medicine can can induce pain? Or is it just tolerance?

Has anybody ever contacted a pharmaceutical company to request a discount on a
medication?
I use Pennsaid 1.5% every single day for pain in my neck lower back ... it
works extremely well for me. Pennsaid cost $200 per bottle, it lasts me about 1
1/2 months.

What happens with pain meds is your body gets addicted to the drug, then you
don't know the difference between the real pain and the
withdrawal...its a bad situation to get in, but a lot of people have no
choice. The same amount of any pain med will never be enough over the period of
yrs or decades. I almost think marijuana for pain is a better, less damaging
route, but has a stigma attached to it.

Meredith, I've taken pain meds for over 20 years. I don't think I could
function without them, especially the first two hours of the day. I do have
a lot more pain than I used to, but I am 62 so it could just be aging. I
don't know that meds induce pain, but they certainly magnify it. A small
pain feels bigger. I guess you could call it rebound pain. I know that
doesn't answer the question, but that's my story...and I'm sticking to
it. :)

Has anybody ever contacted a pharmaceutical company to request a discount
on a medication?
I use Pennsaid 1.5% every single day for pain in my neck lower back ...
it works extremely well for me. Pennsaid cost $200 per bottle, it lasts me
about 1 1/2 months.

Most Quad Doc's start you off gradually and increase over time as needed Ron,
that's why I was surprised when you told me how much you had started out on
from the onset of using pain meds. Everyones pain can vary, But my 1st -10
years as a quad with a Syrinx, I needed little or no meds...but at around age
50 after 10 years of quad life my pain was getting worse and my Syrinx was
Elongating or Spreading. At 1st I only needed hydrocodone in lower doses a few
times per week, after a few years I had to go to Oxycodone and needed it each
day as my pains grew worse. Even now I only try to take enough to get by but
not be a zombie. I take 10mg of (elavil)= amitriptyline at night to help
sleep-many quads take this in higher doses. I take 15mg of oxycodone for severe
pain and can take up to 3 a day if needed. I know many quads need much higher
doses and other pain meds also. The sad part is that the meds help but never
make all the pain go away, and as with all
drugs most have side effects also such as poorer circulation and so on. DH**

I usually take two oxy 40's and two percocet 500's per day. I still hurt
terribly and for the last two weeks I've broken out in hives every time I
take one. Can't win.

I know that
doesn't answer the question, but that's my story...and I'm sticking to
it. :)

2014-03-27 Thread RONALD L PRACHT
Pain is such a personal fight within oneself that you cant possibly make
anyone, especially someone that's never had pain understand. You do what you
have to in order to live your life as best you can with as little suffering as
possible. Everyone has an opinion on how much, what to take, when, where
atyou must take all this in and plow your own way. I thought the
bowell routines were a quads toughest battle, I was wrong...chronic pain is
a game changer. The being in a wheelchair is nothing compared to all the
baggage no one knows about.
