Re: [QUAD-L] hemorrhoidectomy
Nicki, I have not had that procedure, but I have had plenty of surgeries through the years. The last time I had general anesthesia was in 1977. I ended up with pneumonia and almost died. Since then, I have opted for a spinal or epidural. Sedation can be added if you are nervous or apprehensive. I have had 2 children, a revision to my Koch Pouch (10 hour surgery), 3 flaps, and a complete hysterectomy along with many minor procedures without general anesthesia. Sometimes the doctors will tell you a general is necessary ... ask to talk to the anesthesiologist! All of the anesthesiologists I've dealt with were more than happy to avoid using general anesthesia on a quad. As you can tell, I am 100% in favor of the spinal option. I hope this helps. Good luck with your procedure. My prayers will be with you. Re: [QUAD-L] I am shriveling up
Just wait until you're in your 60's! Seriously, I hear you Bobbie, Larry, et al. I am 62 and my accident was 46 years ago. I used to be able to do SO much more than I can now. The most debilitating conditions affecting me now are scoliosis and edema/lymphedema in my feet. My only advice is to the younger (age + years post injury) quads - address these kind of problems before they occur. Be hyper vigilant - listen to the older quads and try to be proactive. Get a podiatrist if you don't have one. Address edema early - use compression stockings and use products that will keep your skin supple. Be aware of how you sit ... if you start to see curvature of your spine, address it immediately. Don't ignore little things - often they will only get worse with time. I wish I'd had older quads to listen to when I was younger - I always thought I could handle anything on my own. I was wrong! Re: [QUAD-L] Reclining?
Bobbie, Do you use a Roho? I do and I've found that they lose air after a while. This causes me to get sores - I've been sitting for so long my skin is incredibly fragile. What I've learned is that when this happens, I need another pressure mapping. Sometimes I have to fight to get one, but once I get it I can heal sores while in my chair. Sometimes I have to recline for a week or so - watch TV, listen to music ... but once a sore starts to heal, I can start living again. Have you had a pressure mapping recently? Re: [QUAD-L] Reclining?
I have been in my chair going on 24 years. I have always used a reclining chair, never a tilt. I like that my knees get bending during raises and better blood flow for legs. I try and recline once a hour as well and even more when I'm on my putr just chillin' at home, but just like last night I was at a amusement park and only did 1 raise in 5 hours. So sometimes I'm bad. I have always done 14 hours up and 10 hours in bed. I start on my back in bed and turn on my side about 4 hours into the night. I have heard many horror stories about air cushions so I have stuck with Jay1, Jay2, and now Jay3 mud cushions. I only wear blue jeans. I rarely have any breakdown with this routine. If when I go to bed and there is any redness or openness we put Silver Sulfadazine and a 2x2 gauze patch over it and then more cream at bed time, so twice a day with cream. If it continues to be open or red I start only doing 8 hours up and 16 hours down with same cream and more time on side. This will clear it all up within a week for me. I know everyone has different reaction and situations but this has worked well for me SO FAR. As we age I think the skin breaks down and more issues will arise. I hope this information is helpful. After 43 years, my skin is as thin and fragile as a soap bubble. I have a shallow but open wound on my butt that has plagued me for close to ten years. Also one on my left hip. Any wound I get on my feet/legs takes forever to heal, if it heals at all. My legs stay bent because of crushed knees. It is a bit of hell on a daily basis. Insert here a long line of $);/$!!! [QUAD-L] adema or swollen feet
I know some of us deal with swollen legs and feet, but about 2 months ago my feet have swollen real bad-I can only wear soft house slippers now..in the past we just had to elevate my legs some at night and they got better but now they stay very swelled up, my family doc. had me try Lasik A water pill I think plus had me try wearing compression hose stockings, but that did not help a whole lot, does anyone know what can be done or what type doctor can treat this?? Dan, it appears to be a circulation issue. I'd consider a heart specialist. You might need a referral from your primary doc. Best Wishes In a message dated 11/2/2014 6:34:20 P.M. Re: [QUAD-L] Reclining?
I have been pressure mapped a few times. It helps find the perfect amount of air to use, or how far you need to recline for best relief. But I got mapped on a few different Roho cushions. I found there were a few Rohos that did not give me good pressure relief. Different Rohos change your posture, etc. I really wanted the Roho that has the foam sides that keep your legs straight. But it just didn't work for me. Also, you can make changes to your chair's back or legrests and it changes your posture. Good to make those changes then get mapped. After I added Lateral supports it totally changed my mapping. I had to be careful to make sure I didn't move the pressure to where I had my previous sore. Greg Nan, I don't understand...if they do a pressure mapping, then what happens or what can be changed then??
