[QUAD-L] Re: Quad Longevity
I see my urologist once a yr unless I'm experiencing problems. My primary comes here about 1x every 3 months but I rarely actually need to see him. As for gyno I've not had one of those appts in about 3 yrs simply because its become so difficult to transfer me to and from my chair. But, now that I realize it's been so long I'm going to make arrangements to go this Spring as the weather will be easier on me. Thanks for bringing up such a good point, Liz! [QUAD-L] Dillion / Urine sediment
Dillion, I suffer constant sediment in my urine, too, and recently it's led to urethra leakage whenever I'm up in my chair and I'm trying to get an appointment with my urologist to see about scheduling a cystoscopy. Have you ever had one of these? I've been a quad twenty years on the 16th and it's been my experience that whenever I have heavy sediment + leaking it's usually bladder stones for me. Maybe you should see your urologist and find out if you have these or an infection. Good luck, hope your problems are resolved soon. StephanieSwamp Sista http://360.yahoo.com/curly_top35

Re: [QUAD-L] Wayward Spouses / Sex
I've never been married but have had several partners in the last 20 years. The longest relationship lasted 8 years and the sex was, as in any relationship, hot and heavy in the beginning then dwindled off to practically nothing in the last 2 years, which really irked me as I'd hit my 30s and went into hormone overload it seemed! In the 4 years we've been apart I've had sex only a few times and like Sandy I really miss having that intimacy. W: as far as your "rent a horny male crip" goes - the logistics of getting the two quads and or quad / para "together" usually requires involving other people and I, personally, dunno about the rest of you, have no intention of asking others to get involved in that aspect of my life. Re: [QUAD-L] What's out your back door & down the street?
I live in a nursing home in a small rural town that's developing rapidly. A state road (228) runs in front of our home and is less than a mile to the highway express and when you're outside our front entrance or near our duck pond you can hear and watch the traffic as it heads into town or towards Jacksonville. Our back yard is a staff parking lot but outside my window, which faces north, used to be a quiet wooded area but has been mowed down and now there's hills of dirt growing and then disappearing as construction vehicles go back and forth busily preparing the once forested land for the town's newest bank. And early next year we're slated to have a super Walmart built about a half mile or so from us, we're very excited. Sad, isn't it? :-p Steph

Re: [QUAD-L] I'm kinda new here
Begitee, I became a c3 quad in 1986 at 18 yrs old and like you, I felt scared and uncertain about how my life would play out. I've spent most of the last 20 years hiding away from society and myself and let depression and insecurity rule my life. I have been living in a nursing home for the last 4 years and will probably do so until my life ends, and for what? I'm not sure. I had opportunities to get my education and become a vital member of society but I squandered them due to foolishness regarding my disability. I have disabled friends who went on to get their degrees, good jobs and many are married with children and have homes and independence that I can only dream of -- don't be like me! Pursue all avenues available to you, in Vocational Rehabilitation, college grants or scholarships. Whatever you do don't let any opportunities for a positive independent life pass you by - you're young and most likely will live MANY more years - make them the best they can be for you! Best of luck, Stephanie
Re: [QUAD-L] Suffocation
I didn't say my experience was like an SCIs only that I knew what it was like to suffocate to death which I do, and yes, when I told them I was having difficulty breathing I was still able to breathe AT THAT POINT yet they continued to ignore me and not only let me lose conciousness from slowly suffocating but to even die - so what's your point, Eric? That I don't know what it is to suffocate? Bull. Steph
[QUAD-L] White light?
No, didn't see anything just had the sensation I was being carried away in someone's arms then that I was THROWN back and then it felt like lighting exploded in my head (I attribute this to defribillator shock) and then I was back among the living. Steph
[QUAD-L] Suffocation
Yup, when I became stricken with TM I kept telling the nursing and respiratory staff I couldn't breathe but they refused to believe me (cuz my color was good??) until I died and they had to resusitate me then put me on a vent that I stayed on for 6 months. But, the actual dying part wasn't so bad I just got very tired of struggling and simply lost conciousness and poof I was gone. Steph

Re: [QUAD-L] Anger Management
Bobbie, I have dreams like that, too, I believe it's our subconcious helping us release anger and frustrations in a way our bodies no longer can. I don't think it means you're a homocidal maniac, as I'm sure you may think, just that you've found a different way to vent. I appreciate my angry dreams because I feel like they help release that negative energy in a safe manner. So, don't feel bad, okay? You're not alone in these experiences and not as violent as some either! For ex: in my dreams I've spilt open a roommate's head with a hatchet, I've beat up my ex, and had fights with faceless strangers, etc. It sounds awful, I know, but, honestly, outside of my dreams I'm really nice! :o) Steph c3 quad - Transverse Myelitis (1986)

Silas, Too late. Fonda was honored in 1999. This is an old Internet hoax. The part about her taking slips of paper from POWs and giving them to the Viet-Cong is untrue. Steph http://www.snopes.com/military/fonda.asp Taken from article: Mike McGrath, President of NAM-POWs, has also stepped forward to disclaim the story: "Please excuse the generic response, but I have been swamped with so many e-mails on the subject of the Jane Fonda article (Carrigan, Driscoll, strips of paper, torture and deaths of POWs, etc.) that I have to resort to this pre-scripted rebuttal. The truth is that most of this never happened. This is a hoax story placed on the internet by unknown Fonda haters. No one knows who initiated the story. Please assist by not propagating the story. Fonda did enough bad things to assure her a correct place in the garbage dumps of history. We don't want to be party to false stories, which could be used as an excuse that her real actions didn't really happen either. I have spoken with all the parties named: Carrigan, Driscoll, et al. They all state that this particular internet story is a hoax and they wish to disassociate their names from the false story."

Re: [QUAD-L] Need Advice
Stacy, Thank you for sharing your story with me, I am so sorry you were subjected to such callousness. Like you, I can clearly recall the names of the cruel ones. My first one was a Diane in ICU who continuously told me to shut up whenever I made the only sound I could (a tongue clicking) to signal for human contact. My time (9 days) in that ICU was the most frightening time of my life compounded by the restricted visiting hours and my inability to communicate to my family the extent of hell I was going through. I came back 3 months later looking for her though and she wasn't there, luckily for me, because all I had in mind to do was mow her down with my chair! [QUAD-L] Steph's letter to Administrator
How's this y'all? April 17, 2006 Rebecca Matheny, Administrator Ms. Matheny: I am writing in hopes that you can help me resolve the situation I was faced with today. As you may or may not be aware of my condition requires that I receive full assistance with all ADL's. When one is in this vulnerable position you hope not only to be cared for by competent people but by people you like and trust and that you have confidence in will conduct your care with respect and warmth. What a person of my vulnerability hopes not to encounter is a hostile or resentful caretaker which would make for an unpleasant life that no one disabled deserves. In my four years as a resident here I've enjoyed a pleasant life and gotten along well with the nursing and cna staff with the exception of Ms. Shelia Thompson a.k.a. Poochie. Our problems began during my first year when I filed a grievance against her for neglect and refusal of care. It was my understanding then that Ms. Thompson would continue to work here but would no longer be assigned to me. I was satisfied with this arrangement. Later Ms. Thompson was fired and it became a moot point. In all this time I have never filed another grievance nor had problems with any other aides. And I believe it's fair to say I'm a well-liked person that's considered easy to work with and that I've been a good resident of this nursing home. Today I discovered Ms. Thompson had been assigned to my hall and that she had refused to enter my room, feed or help in any way with my care. This part I have no problem with and actually am in agreement with Ms. Thompson about, however, it meant other aides from a different hall were obliged to do my care which they did with compassion and grace and I'm very appreciative of Meagan Johns and Donna Harris for their help. It is my request that Ms. Thompson not be assigned to my hall or me again in any capacity - this way no extra burden is imposed on the staff who do enjoy working with me and I them. As it stands Ms. Thompson is scheduled to be on my hall for two weeks and I feel very uneasy and stressed about how my care is to be managed. It is my hope we can resolve this quickly and without further incidence. Thank you for your time. Sincerely, Stephanie Dial

[QUAD-L] Need Advice
Hey Gang, I'm having a problem and need to know what you think I should do. During my first year in this nursing home I had a problem with an aide named Poochie who I ended up filing a grievance on for neglect and refusal of care who was from then on not assigned to me, she was later caught sleeping on the job and let go, but has been hired back in recent weeks. Since her return I've been told of comments from her such as "You know I don't go in Stephanie's room!" regarding answering my light or coming in to care for my roommate. This doesn't bother as I prefer her as far away from me as possible, but today she and her partner, a young man named Jeremy, were assigned to my hall. An aide from another hall had to come feed me and informed me that Poochie had been assigned to feed me and do my care and had refused so that was why she was feeding me. Between having Poochie and this male aide on my hall I would have been effectively without care if it wasn't for the kindness of Meagan who fed me and then after finishing her people's care came back and got me up. I did complain to the charge nurse, Adam, and tell him what had transpired in the past and today and that basically I'd rather not have any dealings with this person and he said he'd file a grievance against her. I also tried contacting my social worker, Bambi Barber, to see if she could help my situation only to discover she isn't in today. I'm feeling really stressed and vulnerable over how my care is going to be managed over the next 2 weeks which is how long she'll be on my hall, if management won't agree to switch her. What can I do to solve this situation without undue drama that keeps this person away from me? Scared & Sad, Steph

Re: [QUAD-L] To all on list that have a Supra Pubic Catheter
Danny, I change bags/catheters once a month, but switch between leg and bed bags daily and so my aides clean both once a day. As to plugging catheter to allow bladder to fill, I've heard of it but never done it. I can barely take being irrigated much less being plugged up, I wet myself more easily than I did before the SP but I figure it might just be a factor of age and being female, dunno. Best, Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] BLADDER STONES
Lori, Bless your heart, you've had some awful experiences! I've had more cystoscopies than I can recall, actually and, luckily for me, never a bad experience with any of them. I usually have them to remove numerous large bladder stones but my last one (Oct 2005) was done along with my getting a supra pubic catheter. In every cystscopy instance though I've had it done outpatient at a hospital under general anesthesia. The only "crappy" effect I've ever felt was a temporary worsening of bladder spasms. Have you had the same dr perform your cystos? Do you know what anesthesia was used when you had an adverse reaction? I've heard, but don't know how true it is, of quads undergoing this with just a local and faring much better - wonder (if it's true) if this would work for you? Best of luck, Steph

I am on the dippy duo. :o) Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] update
Eric, Her family dislikes you solely because you're disabled? Bizarre! Someone said they're reminded of "Flowers in the Attic," lol, I'm thinking more like a X-File episode but I won't say which one because it really is insulting, unfortunately, none of us can choose what family we're born into, but thankfully, we can grow up and choose to leave that family. It sounds like Amy's has made that choice for her but I think she and your child will only benefit from it. An innocent child doesn't need bigotry and ignorance from within it's own family, this world will show them that soon enough. Hope Amy pursues that therapy though, it can be very helpful in many ways. Best of luck, Steph
[QUAD-L] Unsubscribing
Hmmm, is right! Lol. I sent her an email with the correct link to unsubscribe earlier but she's not comprehending. She just keeps hitting Reply or Reply All. :D Steph
[QUAD-L] Hello KK
KK, Welcome to the list! I hope you don't experience any adverse reactions to it either, just be as sensitive to your body's signals as you can is my advice, and hopefully all will be fine. Take care, Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] levaquin adverse reactions...?
Re: Acidolphilous I take 2 capsules 3x daily it's a blessing because I stay on antibiotics now and about every 3 to 4 months I end up needing a round of intramuscular shots. Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] Birthdays - I'm another year older
Happy, happy birthday, Smurf!! I'm a February baby, too, mine's near the end though. Hope you're enjoying your first full day as a 22 yr old and have many happy returns! Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] Red spot
Hi Greg, If it's definitely not pressure from your chair's backrest then I'd hazard a guess it's your clothes. Do you wear denim jeans? Whenever I wore my Levi's I got redness from the thick seam work. Best of luck, Steph
[QUAD-L] Med Allergies
I'm allergic to Codeine, big time, as are many in my family, which really sucks when it comes to pain relief! I can't handle the synthetic codeine Loracet either. My other allergies are to sulfa drugs, IVP dye, Quinine and just recently Macrodatin. Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] levaquin adverse reactions...?
This is an eye-opening topic, wow, I've taken Levaquin many times over the years with no adverse reactions (knock on wood hope it stays that way!) and this is the first time I've heard of others having reactions to it. Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] uti's
When I lived at home I rarely got infections. I believe it had a lot to do with keeping the bags properly cleansed, too. At home my caretaker would rinse out my bags with hot water then half fill them with a equal mix of white vineagar and water then hang them over a towel rod in a way where the connector end came in touch with nothing - I stayed UTI free for years. Here when they do rinse it out it's not always throughly or with hot water and they're required to put them in plastic bags so I keep a steady UTI! I've put up written instructions, I've talked and tried to make them understand but it's hard because some care, some don't. Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] Medicaid to Medicare Part D
I'm like you Jim (dual-eligible) and I went with AARP seemed like the most cost effective one in my book, maybe our next Prez will ditch this entire crazy plan and put in sensible guidelines for Medicaid & Medicare, hah, I'm deaming! Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] Long-term antibiodic therapy
I'm taking Macrodantin, too, but breaking out on my chest, back and face so I guess it's back to the drawing board for me! Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] Bladder & bowel spasms
Lana, My dr gave me Belladonna suppositories once years ago when I had an infection that was causing severe bowel and bladder spasms they worked great for me. It sounds like Gabe might need another UA done to see if the infection isn't still present and causing these severe spasms. Best of luck, Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] printer ~friend question
Bobbie, Why not just be upfront and say "I don't mind you using my computer to go online but if you need to use my printer I'd appreciate if you brought your own paper and reimburse me for ink costs."? It's not unreasonable you're providing everything else! Or I suppose you could just hope she's not computer savvy and disable it through your Control Panel - Printers - Click File and uncheck Set as Default this might keep it from printing I would test it to be certain though. Steph
Re: [QUAD-L] Waxing for women

Re: [QUAD-L] Murderball
I saw Murderball last week, it was good, but I wish it had focused more on the actual sport though I got a laugh out of what I dubbed their "nationwide personal ad" they should take out a billboard with arrows pointing to their crotch saying "Ladies, IT works!" :o) I believe the sex video was from the rehab hospital, remember the doctor? Re: [QUAD-L] LEG BAG STRAPS
Before nursing home life I used Hollister leg bags that came with cotton straps that clipped over a button attachment on the bag. Rubber straps always left deep welts in my legs - hated those things! Steph
