I tried the number of years ago but when I got home after the fitting it made a
pressure area so I took it back. I prefer the Roho and I have used for decades
they are good except for when the Cushion deflates and you do not know it. You
must check every day. Dana

[QUAD-L] Call legislature

2016-06-20 Thread daanoo53

CRT Education and Advocacy in Washington, DC July 12-14

June 20, 2016

CRT Stakeholders,

This is a critical year for taking the CRT message to Congress.

We need to build on the significant progress we have made and push for passage
of legislation to prevent significant payment cuts to CRT wheelchair
accessories on December 31 (H.R. 3229 and S. 2196) and to create a separate CRT
benefit category (H.R. 1516 and S. 1013).

With that in mind, CRT stakeholders are encouraged to sign up for the "new and
combined" 2016 Assistive Technology Conference being held July 12 to July 14at
the Hyatt Regency Crystal City in Arlington, Virginia being presented by RESNA,
NCART, and NRRTS.

Attendees will benefit from a continuation of sessions covering business topics
for the management teams of CRT providers and manufacturers plus funding and
advocacy topics for all CRT stakeholders regarding the latest CRT Medicare and
Medicaid trends, issues, and advocacy strategies.

In addition, the CRT "business" sessions are now supplemented by great
CEU-earning seating and mobility workshops designed for the practicing Rehab
Technology Professional.

Most importantly, July 14 will be Capitol Hill Day enabling everyone to take
the CRT message directly to Congress. Providers, manufacturers, consumers,
clinicians, and other advocates will spend the day making in-person visits to
Members' offices. Once you sign up, we'll make the appointments for you.

So come join other CRT stakeholders for unparalleled continuing education,
networking, and advocacy!

You can get more details and register online at
http://www.ncart.us/crtconference.

Don

The Disability Integration Act is new civil rights legislation which addresses
the institutionalization of the Disability Community. The Disability
Integration Act establishes in Federal statute that people with disabilities
have a civil right to live and receive services and supports in the community
rather than being forced into institutions just to receive those services.

While the Disability Integration Act has been introduced in the Senate, we are
currently working with Representative Cárdenes on the introduction of the
Disability Integration Act in the House. We need more Representatives in the
House to sign on to the Disability Integration Act as initial cosponsors so
that it will have a strong introduction!

CONTACT YOUR REPRESENTATIVE TODAY! Ask your representative to support the
Disability Integration Act and to reach out to Rep. Cárdenes' office to be an
initial cosponsor!

2016-03-31 Thread daanoo53
I have a lot of UTIs and I have been told by infectious disease doctors at KU
medical center that these drugs are usually not effective because we become we
become immune to them. I have been on several daily antibiotics. I have been in
the hospital 4 times in the hospital since November with UTIs.

Hi Dr. Ron and Sharon, I have not had the pleasure of knowing you on the list,
it is nice to meet you.

I am not aware with your level of disability and years post.
because I have not been reading it a lot lately. I have been in the hospital
and out so many times. Oral medications do not work on me anymore for UTIs. I
have to go in the hospital for at least three day, Before the culture grows and
they put me on a IV and then send me home with a midline or pic line. I then
had home health to change the dressings and do bloodwork.
I do take a probiotic called Proural that a urologist told me to take more than
a year ago. I order it online. I don't know if it helps, but he advised it
after I've had 3 lithotripsy's for kidney stones. I had a fourth one in
November 2015.

Re: [QUAD-L] please contact your representative to cosponsor HR 3229

2015-09-28 Thread daanoo53

September 28, 2015

CRT Stakeholders and Friends,

We have a limited window of time to resolve this major access threat and the
solution depends on getting the support of Congress and the President. Thanks
to those who are engaged in outreach activities already. Here are the two
actions we need CRT stakeholders and friends to take.

ACTION 1: Get your Representative to Co-Sponsor HR-3229

Visit http://cqrcengage.com/access2crt/HR3229 to view the list of current
co-sponsors and see if your Representative has signed on yet. You can also
access helpful documents on this issue like the Position Paper and the House of
Representatives and Senate letters that were sent to CMS.

We currently have 15 Representatives signed on. If your Representative is not
on the list at the website, call their office using the link provided. Just
supply your home address and your Representative and contact information will
be identified. There are simple talking points that you can use to make your
request. While a phone call is most effective, you can also send an email using

ACTION 2: Sign the National Petition to President Obama

A National Petition has been created at a "we the people" website created by
President Obama to enable the public to bring critical matters to his
attention. The petition calls for these cuts to be stopped. If we get 100,000
signatures the President is required to formally respond to the request. We
currently stand at approximately 5,000 signers.

You can access the petition at www.ProtectMyIndependence.com/LearnMore. This is
one more vehicle we can use to elevate the awareness and urgency on this
accessory issue. As noted above, be sure you are contacting your Representative
regarding HR-3229 in addition to signing the petition.

Please share this information with other people and organizations who can be
helpful. Thanks for taking these actions to help stop this major access threat!

Re: [QUAD-L] pressure sore seating info

2015-09-16 Thread daanoo53
Please email your Representives using he website information listed below.
Call Their office in 1-2 days to prevent 20-40 cuts wheelchair and and W/C
accessories for complex disabilities.

September 16, 2015

CRT Stakeholders and Friends,

The biggest threat to preserving access to CRT today is summed up in this
question: Can we stop the devastating Medicare cuts to CRT wheelchair
accessories scheduled for January 1, 2016?

The answer to that is, "it depends". It depends on the short-term actions of
you and thousands of other CRT stakeholders across the country. If we get
everyone engaged as described below the answer is yes. If we don't, the answer
is no.

As reported, without specific Congressional intervention Medicare payments for
accessories used with individually configured Complex Rehab wheelchairs will be
INAPPROPRIATELY cut by 20% to over 40% starting January 1. This is a result of
CMS violating the intent of existing Congressional legislation and
inappropriately using Medicare Competitive Bid Program pricing for "standard"
wheelchair accessories to cut payments for "complex rehab" wheelchair
accessories.

If Congressional legislation is not passed to prevent this, there will be
devastating consequences to people with disabilities who rely on Complex Rehab
wheelchairs to meet their medical needs and maximize their function and
independence. It will not only negatively impact Medicare beneficiaries, but
will extend to children and adults with disabilities covered under Medicaid and
other health insurance programs as well.

The positive news is that legislation to stop these cuts has been introduced in
the House of Representatives by Representative Lee Zeldin (R-NY). The
legislation is bill number H.R. 3229. Our collective task is to get as many
co-sponsors on this bill as we can over the next several weeks and get Congress
to pass it as soon as possible.

Here is where your immediate help and that of others is needed. The weeks
ahead will be a very busy time for Congress. We need all CRT stakeholders and
friends to contact their Representative today and be persistent in their
outreach by following these simple steps:

1.) Visit the web page dedicated to this issue to access helpful background
documents you can use in your outreach as needed. You can also view the list of
current co-sponsors to verify your Representative has NOT signed on yet (this
list will be updated daily as we get new co-sponsors).
2.) Send an Email: If your Representative has not signed on, use the link
provided to send an email. Just supply your home address and your
Representative will be identified. A template message is provided to use as is
or you can modify.
3.) Make a Call: Wait 24 to 48 hours after sending your email and then call
your Representative's office using the guidelines provided on the web page.

Special Note: A copy of the April 20th House of Representatives' letter to CMS
is available on the above web page. Check to see if your Representative was one
of the 101 signers. These members should be particularly willing to co-sponsor
H.R. 3229 since it was necessitated due to CMS' refusal to honor the
Congressional request in the letter. Mention this in your outreach.

After starting your advocacy by sending the email, your follow up to get a
"yes" answer is critical. Additional emails and phone calls may be required.
Remember Congress is a busy place. But we have seen proof that positive results
DO come from polite persistence with your Congressional offices.

Please share this Alert with other CRT stakeholder groups and individuals.
We'll keep you updated on the progress and please let us know if you require
any assistance.

Thanks for making this a priority and doing all we can to stop these cuts and
prevent major access issues for the people with disabilities who depend on CRT.
Regards,

Don

I don't know if this will help but I use 2 inch wide peach colored tape that
 I get from Edgepark park.
Hy-tape latex free. I also use paste on my ostomy. You might ask the company
about trying a different brand of wafers. Edgepark will allow you try several
wafers and then get the order for the one you like. Sorry you're going
through this. The wafer must not be adhering to the skin properly. I wish I
knew more but I don't have a colostomy, but I have a oleo conduit.

I hope you guys can help me out. I have had a urostomy for more than three
years now and have no problems with that wafer leaking or urine getting
underneath the wafer. I am, however, having nothing but difficulties with
the colostomy wafer. First thing to note is my urostomy wafer as a small
room on the inside with quite a bit left over to it here to the skin. The
colostomy one, on the other hand, has a lot bigger ring in the middle of it.
 I believe it's 57 mm or 2 1/4 inch.

Have a small indentation at one corner of my stoma and therefore they say I
need stoma paste. We've never had to use this on my urostomy, so were not
sure exactly how much to apply. The last two days we have had the colostomy
wafer leak and it appears like the fecal matter is immediately seeping under
the wafer and compromising the integrity of my skin. Not to mention it
 stinks to high heaven.

Any advice on how you guys do it or suggestions would be welcome. As far as
my urostomy, we basically use two or three skin preps, but they told us we
really didn't need to use them for the colostomy. Last night we decided to
go ahead and use skin prep on the colostomy as well as a little bit of stoma
paste where the intention is on my stoma.

I want to thank you in advance for the help. Normally I'm able to call on a
nurse friend of mine who lives down the road to help me out, but she's out
of town on vacation right now.

So sorry to know that you have been having all these problems. I have had
similar issues so I know how it feelsI have also gone to the wound so many
times. I may write so close to the bone I had osteomyelitis, requiring surgery
last year that has never completely healed. I have to wear a hard splint all

tube, pull the plug discussions - the whole 9 yards. Don't remember much
which I am very thankful for. Another week in the hospital in March - my
potassium skyrocketed and they called me at 10PM to tell me to go to ED.
Got that under control. Nurse smashed my knee while in during March, nice
sore there now. My legs got so thin from being in bed, so now I have 3 sore
on my left leg, one is down to the bone. The Wound Care Clinic is beginning
to feel like home! Feeling much better now. Hopefully things will start to
 look up now.

Getting to be an old quad sucks ... but, I still think it's better than the
 alternative!

 Hope everyone is well.

with Him. There is an old saying that the prettiest flowers grow on the
manure pile. This means great things can come from the worst circumstances.
True, no doubt. And some good things have come from my condition. However,
as I grow old, 62, I find myself becoming bitter and resentful. I think
about my life pre-injury, and I get overwhelmed with anger and despair. I
was only 19, cheated out of the best years of life. I know I am preaching
to the choir; many of you were injured even earlier. I have reached the
point, though, that I am tired of it all. I am tired of being a burden, of
depending on others, of being told I am selfish when I ask for help. I am
tired of hurting all the time. I am tired of pissing my pants and being
afraid to go anywhere because of it. I am tired of being useless. I am
tired of being a cripple and I am tired of life.

The 15th marked 24 years with SCI. It just so happened that we were out and
about that day and we are having a beautiful Indian summer with highs in the
sixties and no severe freeze so far.
We finished shopping at Sam’s Club and I decided to just roll over to the
next place we were going which was only seven or eight blocks away. My
wheelchair has been behaving itself quite well so I felt confident I could
beat the others to the next store. I took off at a good clip (for an omega
track) and realized when I got there that the store had moved another eight
or 10 blocks away a couple of months ago. No problem, except that the
wheelchair decided to quit right as I was crossing the street. I was able to
flag down a pedestrian who restarted my chair. A little more cautiously I
kept on going, stopped again, a couple of people came over to ask if I needed
help-of course I did. Now I am being very cautious as I am realizing it is
quitting when I try to go faster. I’ve already given up on the challenge of
beating everyone else to the next store, just want to get there without
breaking down in the middle of the street again. I finally reach the parking
lot of the next shopping mall, which is quite empty, and get out to the
middle of the lot. Stopped again, this time there are no pedestrians, so I
resign myself to waiting until somebody misses me and comes to find me,
because they are in Walmart and the cell phones don’t work to reach them.
Suddenly a car veers over and a young man gets out. As he is walking over
three more cars come over and everyone gets out. I guess I was noticed,
because they all want to know if I’m OK and do I need help. The young man
gets to me first, starts my chair off, and I thank everyone, and leave for
the store. Then I noticed that the young man’s car is following me. He
escorts me to Wal-Mart, and then smiles and says have a great day and drives
 off.
Moral of the story, move out west to find plenty of good Samaritans. Have a
great day everyone, I sure did. Joan
