Hi Tim!

Great to get a new chair! Thumbs up!

My Permobil Chairman is 9 1/2 years old now. The upholstery on the back
armrests started going about 4 years ago and now I find lil black specks
everywhere (even on my neck, etc SOMEHOW!). I also have the tilt and recline
and use the tilt feature constantly!

My last chair, a Fortress Scientific, only had a recline feature but I loved
that chair for the 12 years I was in in it. The back of the chair was very
thick and pretty much hollow so it felt much better than the one that comes
with the Permobil. Even though I had extra foam put in the back of this
Permobil -- it STILL feels so hard OR my chronically hurting back is
oversensitive. I don't know which.

There was a discussion here over a year ago about those of us here who have
Permobils and have felt that their back has hurt worse. Any of those of you
still out there? I think there were about four of us including me.

Like many ... no idea what my next chair (long overdue) choice will be. I've
been in my ~comfort zone~ with it by being in my Permobil almost a decade now
and am leery to change. Hubby says no more Permobils (for many reasons) but he
is not the one in the chair all day long either!

I really regret NOT getting the elevated feature so it would be much easier to
get batteries put in. It has been a major hassle for me to stay in bed to get
new batteries put in while my husband has to take it to the vendor and they
turn it on its side or something.

After spending 12 years in my last chair... it took me awhile (months) to get
used to my Permobil back in early 1999.

* How was your new cair paid for Tim -- if I might ask? And who was the vendor
that you will continue to go to for services? That also seems to be a major
problem for many of us. I also forgot which state you live in?

* I also can't remember... is this your first Permobil or did you have one
before? Although you did mention your Quickie so I assume that was your
previous chair. Did your body adjust to it right away?

* Are you just sitting on the bucket seat or are you using a special cushion
instead? I sat in the bucket seat up until four years ago with no skin
problems whatsoever that were pressure related. But I decided to take the
opportunity to have Medicare pay for a cushion after my last wound caused by
moisture. It is called a VARILITE cushion.

It is so weird sometimes when you find that your body cannot easily go back
to something. About a year ago as I would go back to using the bucket seat but
my body screamed NO I really bad feelings and spasms.

The same happened when, after sitting in my Permobil for about a year and
finally gotten used to it, I went to go back to try Old Faithful one day and my
body reacted the same and I had to go back to bed and switch chairs!

I notice the bumps just as much as any other chair I have used. The big front
wheels go over everything smoothly but the smaller back wheels make everything,
including sidewalks operations, a definite KA-THUD all the time... therefore
jarring my body.

Thanks for sharing that you are happy with it! I think I only have 5 questions
(yikes!) but I would be much obliged if you would answer them.
Best,
Lori Michaelson

My new Permobile C350 is still sitting in the shop. I haven't had a chance
to sit in it yet, but I am eager to try it out shortly. In fact, I'm going
to get on the phone right now and see what the hold up is this time. I
ordered the thing in March and while the chair arrived pretty quickly, it
has taken three or four months to get all of the other parts in.

Re: [QUAD-L] New Permobil

2008-03-05 Thread John S.
the invacare TDX models do well. Like the peremobile they have a shortage of
leg foot protection unless your DME will add it to make the sale. Obviously,
a peremobile is a buick and the Invacare is a Chevy. The peremobile is more
than just smooth. It has a well deserved reputation. I know a guy that has had
a Peremobile for 20 years. My TDX is 4 years old and it has a cute grinding
sound when backing up to the right. When I start out in the morning I have to
recline while my aid is there to help it sit up and remember what sitting up
is. The 1st few times it sits up each day it tries just making the sound that
it is sitting up. When I called Invacare, they said to just turn off the power
and then try sitting up after I turn the power back on. My DME ordered the part
and they are coming tomorrow to to replace it. It has done it before.
Now if the Peremobile needs a service call, they can't fix it at your home.
Just getting the wheels off a Peremobile is a major job.
I don't know what the crash test results are. My chair is just passing 8900
hours.
I had an Invacare Storm series. It resembles the peremobile front wheel drive
except it is usually set up in rear wheel drive. It was awfull riding. Handling
was pathetic. for speed, it was easily the fastest chair I ever owned and
batteries were huge. It is my backup if this chair suddenly dies or goes for a
week or two.
Before that I had an EJ premier. I never got a sore in it but it was like
driving a freight train with no suspension at all. Dependable and dangerous.
I know this group has had some awesome chairs. in Ohio it is a matter of what
you're willing to deal with and if the people helping you care if you get a
decent chair. You need to write up a minimum that your willing to live with for
5 to 7 years. You can ask for a nightime outdoor package. you might not get it
but act like you're making a big sacrifice. Ohyea, get a power plug for your
laptop. MyDesc has some nice desktops for most chairs. Ask your Dr. to
specifically perscribe things you really want. Don't forget the electric leg
bag drain.
I have seen people stop getting out of bed because their chair was so
incredibly uncomfortable.

sneezing or coughing at slow speeds can be more difficult than at high

It is still going to be difficult to change, but I am pretty sure I will

Hooray!

Not sure if any of you guys have seen or tested the latest chair from

Permobil, but its nice.

I ordered my c-350 corpus in December and just delivered it.  It comes

with many options

I opted for the tilt, recline, and foot elevator.  You can also get the

seat elevator.  There

are three things I told the lady OT who helped me pick the chair out:

(1)It had to ride smooth

(2)It had to have a low seat to floor height and (3) IT HAD TO BE

SEXY!!!  I'll try to put some

picks of it up on myspace in the next few days.  We'll see how well it

holds up to the amount

of college campus miles I'm gonna put on it.

Down here in Texas the weather ain't too shaby either.
I don't see how you guys live any higher than Central Texas though.
To me the heat is my home.

FLAVOR00-NONE--- ;

So the great dude Greg is ... he gave me his old one for parts!

Fortunately I have not had to resort to that yet but thanks again
Greg.

The weather today down here south of you was quite a bit cooler here
than the last several wonderful days near 80°... But I guess we are
spoiled compared to the rest of the country ... eh Greg?

I had a Permobil Chairman years ago. I loved it. I loved all of the
features, but it was little things I liked most. The swing away
armrests and the way the chest/trunk supports worked. I do wish it was
faster. That was the only reason I did not go for another one. I like
my TDX5, but it’s just not as smooth. Greg

I have had my Permobil Chairman since 1999 and I also have the three
features that you have.  IF the next chair that I choose will be a
Permobil... I will get the seat elevator also.  That has been the most
difficult problem when trying to change the batteries.  I have to be
out of the chair (and for me... that means in bed) while my husband
takes it to the vendor and takes God knows how long to get that done.
Factoring in that they have to order the batteries to begin with.

I am keeping a list of all the chairs that other people are happy with
but I am so used to the Permobil now that I am leery about changing.
But for many vendors... The Permobils are not a common chair to work
on so that is a problem also and a good one to consider.

The other feature that has been the greatest problem for me is the
height compared to the two other wheelchairs I have had since my
injury.  No matter how much they lowered it when I first got it... I
still have a problem fitting under tables, can barely see out of my van
windows to enjoy a drive, etc. etc. Etc..

I do not know whether this is a fluke or not but besides myself... I
have learned of about three other people on this list who have had more
back pain with their Permobils.  But I really do not know if it is the
chair or my body.  I had the vendors come back three different times to
put more cushioning in the back but it is nowhere close to being as
comfortable as my old Fortress Scientific wheelchair that I had for 12
years prior to this one.

Is this your first Permobil?
