I think personally starting off as an operator would be great. That's where I
started. I got use to being on phones and greeting people. I learned how to
hand things too people quicker by just working the front desk. I learned to
type faster and faster as time went by. Then I became that assistant. Now I do
alot of data entry working with contracts, punching holes, labeling them
preparing them to be filed. Could I do this 13 yrs ago nope I could hardly hold
a phone or even write. Now I have to say my hand writting is better than many
people I know who can write. I can grab the phones fatser than u can say boo.
lol But it all gets easier. I not only work I also volunteer here in the city
speaking to jr high & high school students, parole officers, offenders about
abusive relationships. I try to stay busy. Yes I do have my down times when I
am sick, but being active makes me feel so much more independent. :) So good
luck!

Even though I have already read some of the experiences of some of you, reading
this particular entry again has given me even more inspiration to go out and
try to get something to do myself.

I have accomplished some things while I had been in my chair, but the last
three years have been relatively uneventful and I really need to get out into
my community more and try to get some sort of work -- whether it be
volunteering or working part time.

I managed to get a BA in history, but since I left the life of academia I have
felt such a void was really desires to be filled.  I'm considering doing some
freelance writing, but I really need to improve upon my ability to write
effectively.

I considered trying to get a job with the Social Security administration
answering telephones, but they have such strict security requirements in
regards to using telephone devices and being able to keep up with a certain
number of callers, that I don't think it's possible for me to do that type of
work.  I use a mouse stick and voice activation in order to operate the
computer.  Because I don't want to be tethered to my computer I tend to use
wireless software in order to use the voice activation.

Anyway, if any of you would like to give me some ideas on what I might do, I
would gladly accept them.  I really need a kick in my butt.

I have been a chair 15 years and yesterday was my anniversary for my job. I've
been here 13 years. I used to be a administrative assisitant to one of the
managers for 8 years and 4 years ago i tried for another job and got it. I work
for the state. I can not tell you that is so easy cause it's not. I've been
sick 9 months straight from being hospitalized from pump infection, sever
spasms, 3 uti's, stomach pain, gallbladder removal & pressure points on feet.
My point is I have used all my vacation and sick time now i am on sick pool. I
have missed alot of work. I'm I worried of course. There is so many people who
need these jobs mine could be one just because i'm not here all the time. But i
could not imagine being at home not working. It gives me so much indpendence. I
love my job. So too answer question there are many jobs quads/paras could work
at.  There are 5 people who are in wheelchairs that work here not including the
deaf mail man, plus 3
amaputee's and the blind kitchen cook. I am a c6-c7 incomplete. I type with my
thumbs grab phones when needed and all my equipment is all electrici. I learned
to do stuff because i wanted to work. So good luck if your looking for a job. I
think many people could work just a learning process. One day I will have to
quit because of disability but wont be anytime soon. :)

Greetings Hosni,

Can a person, a quad, continue to work.  The easy answer is yes.  The more
difficult answer would be no.
But then again, in a perfect world I should be the President. (lol)  I know
for a fact many Quads, both male and female who are actively employed.  Some
are high Quads.  Others are lower Quads.  So many of them are not part of this
discussion board, for what ever reason.
Much depends on your knowledge, education and skills.  If you don't have them
you have to achieve them.
Knowledge is power.

RE: [QUAD-L] what a quad can work?

2009-04-05 Thread Steve Oldaker
Hi Hosni,

I was injured nearly 21 years ago at about the age you are right now. It was
hard to imagine being able to go back to work at the time. I began working
with Vocational Rehabilitation Services shortly after injury and after some
extensive aptitude testing I attended and completed a one-year training
program in computer programming. This led to an internship with the federal
government where I worked full time without pay for four months. It allowed
me to gain experience and demonstrate I could do the work and maintain a
full-time schedule. When my internship ended, I was hired by the facility
under a program initiated to recruit disabled employees. I started as an
entry-level database application developer and eventually became an IT
project manager. I did have assistance in getting hired, but in 17 years I
was promoted five times and received numerous outstanding annual performance
appraisals and awards based on merit. I share this not to boast but to
demonstrate a high level quad can not only exist in the workplace, he/she
can compete and succeed.

I highly recommend employment with the federal government. The vast majority
of federal positions are only open to current Federal employees, but
exceptions are made for qualified individuals with disabilities. Benefits
are excellent. Pay is competitive with the private sector, and you start out
receiving 10 holidays and accruing 13 vacation and sick days annually.
Health and life insurance is relatively inexpensive and there are no
pre-existing exclusions. I opted for a federal disability retirement last
summer which provides me with a disability retirement annuity until age 62
when I am eligible for regular Social Security. This is separate from SSDI
which I now also receive. I am also able to retain my federal employee
health and life insurance at the same rates as when I was employed.

Computers and computer related careers are great equalizers for people with
disabilities. Adaptive software and hardware allows full, effective use of
the computer and most applications. People are often surprised to learn that
I had not used a computer before my injury and my hands have never touched a
computer keyboard or mouse. I use a mouthstick and mostly voice recognition
software to operate my computers.

Many computer related careers can be done by telecommuting. I had this
option while working for the government. I preferred to be in the office,
but it was extremely helpful if I needed to work at home due to health or
transportation issues.

The key to employment with or without a disability is having skills you can
provide to your employer in whatever career you choose. Training and/or
education is crucial and it often does not end once you get hired. With hard
work, persistence, flexibility and some luck mixed in, you will have the
recipe for success.

Best of luck in your quest for employment.

Steve - C4, 20 years

Dear Hosni,
I worked as an accountant for 16 years. It wasn't a "get rich" job but it was
steady. I still do taxes for friends. I regret never becomning a CPA.
I sort of stumbled into the job and it took 26 months to get on medicare and
medicaid after the owner closed shop and retired.
I have tutored and written for local papers for extra money.
I have even begged. I was stunned by how much money I got for that.
I don't know what you can handle each day, then again, I didn't know I could
type until I needed to write after I broke my neck.
I order my monthly supplies from a quad that has everything drop shipped to me.
The place I live in was modified by a company owned and run by a C-5.
Getting a job is important, even if you start by doing volunteer stuff. Just
start a constructive habit of being up and searching by 9 am. People do not
think we can function without help until they see us doing it.
Best Wishes,
john

Re: [QUAD-L] what a quad can work?

2009-04-04 Thread Bobbie299

Work I've done as a C 4,5,6 switchboard operator, motivational speaker,
retail sales, peer councilor, meditation instructor

I want to ask what a quadriplegic person can work after his injury to
continue his life as a normal person.
What kind of work?

Greetings Hosni,

Can a person, a quad, continue to work. The easy answer is yes. The more
difficult answer would be no.
But then again, in a perfect world I should be the President. (lol) I
know for a fact many Quads, both male and female who are actively employed.
Some are high Quads. Others are lower Quads. So many of them are not part
of this discussion board, for what ever reason.
Much depends on your knowledge, education and skills. If you don't have
them you have to achieve them.
Knowledge is power.

True Eric. Actually very true. Often the motivation is survival. Other
times its raw attitude.
Many ABs, don't possess the aptitude that Todds has.

Todd is one of the many classic examples of the easy. That is why the more
difficult is so hard to explain.
I chose the easy way out by saying the "more difficult answer would be no."
