RE: [QUAD-L] seat cushion
As I've posted previously, I question the true value of pressure mapping. Doesn't the process and mapping assume you will always be seated (positioned) exactly the same way in your chair on your cushion each time? It seems even a minor variance (perhaps 1) left, right, forward or backward would effectively change the mapping. There may also be variances due to types of clothing worn and changes in weight. RE: [QUAD-L] seat cushion
Yes and no. It does change as your position changes, but you'd have to be pretty changed to make a real difference. But if you saw the pressure difference on my mapping of my Jay and my Roho, it was clearly more relief on my Roho. I was able to see how the pressure changes as I raised and lowered my leg-rests. I could tell where the best location was. Even if I'm slightly on one butt cheek more than the other or off to one side a bit. One day may fit better than another, but averaged out the better your cushion fits you the better for your butt. If I was 1 inch off, I'd be pretty uncomfortable. I think that would be bad on your butt with any cushion. Just my thoughts. Greg _ As I've posted previously, I question the true value of pressure mapping. RE: [QUAD-L] seat cushion
I never had pressure mapping until I developed a stage one pressure ulcer. I didn't realize it at the time that it was being caused by my jeans. I sat on a number of different cushions during the very simple procedure. It turns out that the best cushion for me is the 2 inch piece of foam. A RoHo showed my bottom to have very many red spots, same with the very expensive gel cushions. You should move around or have the occupational therapists move you around to see where/when pressure is occurring. In answering the first post of this original question, my concern was the person was being pushed to buy a question just because of a dealer recommends the cushion. Re: [QUAD-L] seat cushion
I have to agree with you Greg. If I'm off as much as a 1/4 of an inch I am extremely uncomfortable. A friend of mine is having the pressure mapping done as I speak. The only reason these haven't done is because he has been developing some raw spots on his rear end. He uses a 1 inch foam cushion. Hopefully they will find something that works well with him. At 06:32 PM 7/29/2009, Quadius said something that elicited my response: I have to agree with you Greg. If I'm off as much as a 1/4 of an inch I am extremely uncomfortable. Ain't that the truth! When my PCAs put me in my chair or adjust me in bed, I often have them move me ever so lightly one way or another. The new ones say 'I hardly moved you!' I always reply that quads live by millimeters. And if we hit a bad bump while driving in the van, I'm shifted an inch or so which results in my inability to do much of anything. RE: [QUAD-L] seat cushion
I do agree that even smaller diversions in seating are detectable by me and it appears most quads, and if pressure mapping is done with multiple cushions and seating positions (i.e. legs up/down, etc.) I can see some value in pressure mapping. RE: [QUAD-L] seat cushion
I got a butt sore from a Jay. I had it for a few years and liked it a lot. I felted a lot more stable and I didn't change position during the day. But I've used a Roho for over 20 years, but did get 1 sore. It was my own fault, my Roho went flat and I never noticed. I should have. I kept sweating and would have to recline quite often. But I was real busy for a few days during that time. And pressure mapping is always a good Idea, even if your just changing to a new cushion of the same kind. Greg _ I've always use the same cushion for years which is a Roho cushion and I've honnestly never had a bed sore on the butt, hehe..

Based on what everyone said it sounds like air is the way to go as opposed to gel, foam, or sand. Right? Sandy
RE: [QUAD-L] Seat Cushion
I used a Jay cushion, gel filled. I sat great in it, felt great. But about 2 years later, I had an mri on my hip. They noticed a large sore under my muscles on my butt. It hadnt broken though yet. They sent me to a surgeon thinking they should drain it. The surgeon said dont touch it. He made me get a Roho cushion. A year later they checked and it had healed up.
