RE: [QUAD-L] bone density....

2010-03-13 Thread Lissette Whitehead

I hardly ever have blood
pressure issues, if I get a bit lightheaded I just have someone press on
my stomach and I'm ok. I do this both with physical therapists and at
home, my mom and this guy that is not a therapist but has been helping
me exercise at home were taught how to stand me like that by my
therapist, it took about 1 hour or less for them to learn, there's
really not much to it, it also helps that my knees lock out pretty good,
if they're not locking out it just takes a little shake to trigger that
spasm that helps to block the knees. It also helps me to lean forward
like to do a back extension, that will make my legs react and my knees
lock out.

Make
sure you get permission from your primary physician before doing standing
therapy. When I tried it about 10 years ago, my physician gave me the
go-ahead, but doesn't believe it helps keep the bone density up. It
does, however, help with spasticity as well as making people feel better.
I
had too much problem getting up in the standing frame. It required two
people and a tremendous amount of effort. Not to mention the fact that I
was too tall for the frame. It ended up causing more pain to my neck and
shoulder then it was worth, so I turned the equipment back

Standing therapy and simulated standing therapy is a great way to
place pressure on the heel, knee and hips. Daily pressure like this goes a long
way to prevent and reduce the effects of bone density loss. Granted, I realize
that it is not easy for most, but for those under the direction of a physical
therapist, its a great way to tone the bones for pivot transfers.

I do not recall what my number was, but mine was low too. I have to take
a pill once a week and was told to eat Tums daily.
My testosterone was very low too.

A word of warning about Fosomax...

I was prescribed it (about 2 years ago) after I broke my leg just falling to
the floor. Along with that, they prescribed Prilosec to counter the stomach
acid Fosomax generates. THAT IS A BIG HINT!!

I took both for three weeks until i finally made the connection between the
severe AD I suffered the day after my weekly dose, but by then the damage was
done. Fosomax' stomach acid had already eaten through my esophagus.

Since then I never know what food(s) will ignite the pain from acid reflux.
I'm always careful to avoid fatty foods (hamburgers are totally off the menu),
but all but mashed potatoes are a crap shoot. No fun.

Standing therapy and simulated standing therapy is a great way to place
pressure on the heel, knee and hips. Daily pressure like this goes a long way
to prevent and reduce the effects of bone density loss.  Granted, I realize
that it is not easy for most, but for those under the direction of a physical
therapist, its a great way to tone the bones for pivot transfers.

Best Wishes

Hi T,

If you are an "average quad" the good news is your upper body should have
normal to above normal bone density.  The bad news--you are probably at the
fracture threshold in your lower body.  Osteoporosis means you have a chance of
breaking a bone from a "standing fall" means 32% or less than 100% bone density
of a healthy sanding 30-year-old male.

Fracture threshold is around 50% bone loss and you run the risk of fracturing a
bone from a sloppy transfer or even taking off socks, or rolling over in bed.
I know, I'm 25 years post injury --a T10 complete para, complete with 4
femur/hip fractures.

You can read all the info in the article I wrote in New Mobility

Alendronate Sodium has been around for a while and can be effective.
It's trade name is Fosamax. It is prescribed for women with

reason a male cannot take it. I had a bone desity scan done on my
legs and hips which showed some signs of bone density loss. After a
regimen of Fosamax for about 1 year I got another scan and it showed
improvement. This will work best when combined with weight bearing
activity. I actually did not use the standing frame as much as I
should have, but I rode an ERGYS FES bike almost daily that provides
some weight bearing type activity. There are other drugs out now that
also may be of use that compete with Fosamax. Talk to your doctor (or
find one with a clue). I am sure most drugs designed to combat
osteoporosis would be of use to you even though you are a male. Good
