RE: [QUAD-L] Quad Belly
I have been wearing them for so long that I am used to the maneuvering J Of getting it on. So we actually timed how long it took to get it on. My daughter who is by far the most experienced quad dresser I know takes 4 to 5 minutes, my new attendant only works on the weekends and it took her 9 minutes. But the difference it makes to me is amazing. If I sit up in bed without it on, my stomach will hurt after a short time. But I can sit up all day-14 hours-with no problem. It definitely would not work with a SP, too much tugging up and over the stomach. My very first attendant suggested it 24 years ago, and I haven’t tried anything else since. Of course I have had to find new types, but spandex by itself doesn’t work for me and is extremely difficult to put on. This is what I use: http://www.walmart.com/ip/23653086 The secret as with anything related to quads is to make sure that it is smooth before putting on my jeans. It works for me so I am not going to try anything else. If it ain’t broke why fix it, right? Have a great day, it’s 39°for a high here to day after 78°last week –b! Re: [QUAD-L] Quad Belly
My quad belly bothers me more than any other change in appearance that quadriplegia imposed. Gnarled fingers, atrophied legs, sunken chest? I can manage. But the slow expansion of my belly bothers me constantly. The fact that I can't seem to do anything to affect it is maddening. I know passing 40 has something to do with it. I know most guys of a certain age deal with it. But being in the chair AND appearing fat even though I'm not really overweight is so depressing. There are also practical problems. It makes sex more challenging, for starters. I'm not planning on anything silly like a tummy tuck, but man I would love to hear some healthy way of slimming down my middle. Sigh. I've been working out and watching what I eat. I feel like I'm pushing my stomach out trying to make myself look pregnant. But my belly is getting uncomfortable, when I try to bend forward, etc. I wish those Ab Belts that shock your muscles to tighten would work, but I heard they don't. It would be great if a doc could just go in there and tie every thing back up. I feel like all my inside stuff is lowering out of place. Even my abdomen binder does not help hold things in place. Greg
Re: [QUAD-L] quad belly
I use abdominal binders to keep my quad belly at bay, but unfortunately I have gained a little bit of weight over the last several years and am now a little more rotund in the belly region. I also let a couple of my binders get a little too stretched out and this allowed my belly to develop a little more. I was just able to get two of my binders sized down a little more so I could put more pressure on my belly, thus making it easier for my blood pressure to stay elevated and my breathing to remain regular. The metal shanks in the sides to an unbelievable job in keeping my posture straight. I don't know what I would look like if I didn't wear a binder. You're right, it's definitely worth the three or four minutes by caregivers spend getting it on me. Quadius
RE: [QUAD-L] quad belly
Maybe it does work-I really don’t have very large quad gut and I have been doing the stretching ever since I became a quad. So maybe it is worthwhile. Joan From: John S. Of course, I can only do these things if I have somebody to help me do them because we have to take all the straps off. One advantage of the body suit is that we have cut slits for all of my shirts and sweaters and I can use my chest strap underneath my shirt with out if rubbing on my skin, so no one knows I have the chest strap on. Re: [QUAD-L] quad belly
Lean forward on your bed while supervised. Keep reaching for your feet. Concentrate on breathing. Always have supervision as this can be too much for many of our respiratory systems. Each day, reach farther and longer. This can also improve digestion. After a few months you can put your hands between your feet. Your belly will be significantly smaller but please use SUPERVISION! If AD begins then stop and dont lean so far. Your body needs to get used to this. Just let gravity do the work. J It definitely helps me to breathe and because it is smooth it makes no marks like a binder sometimes does. Id hate to think what Id look like without it, especially if I gained any weight. I don't know, but what I do know is that after 10 years I finally got heavy enough to develop a quad belly. Welcome to the club and all it's lovely side benefits :)- Bobbie Humphreys C-5,6.7 motocross jumping accident in 1973 at 17 Married to Sweet Pete Living in Parsippany, New Jersey
