I'm curious about this "girdle" too. What is it exactly? Would it bother an SP
catheter? I wore a binder for almost a year until it started to irritate my

I am definitely happy that I’m a female if I have to be a quad! That is why I
wear “a girdle”, so I don’t have to have an apparent quad gut. J . I was not
happy with binders as they would roll and pinch and cause more problems than it
cured, and the body suit that I wear is smooth and doesn’t hurt my skin.
We can’t really Eliminate our bellies, because it is just those darned

can force them back inside. LOL

After my stoma my quad belly went down a lot, but it sure came back. Bigger
than ever.
Even a binder does nothing for it.
When laying on my back, my stomach looks pretty flat. But once I sit up... it
just flop out.
It actually gets uncomfortable.
Exercising really does nothing for that area, since I have no muscle control
there.
I am trying to twist and do what bending forward that I can. Diet does not seem
to help, the rest of my body it average.

RE: [QUAD-L] Quad Belly

2015-04-07 Thread Joan Anglin
I have been wearing them for so long that I am used to the maneuvering J Of
getting it on. So we actually timed how long it took to get it on. My daughter
who is by far the most experienced quad dresser I know takes 4 to 5 minutes, my
new attendant only works on the weekends and it took her 9 minutes. But the
difference it makes to me is amazing. If I sit up in bed without it on, my
stomach will hurt after a short time. But I can sit up all day-14 hours-with no
problem.

It definitely would not work with a SP, too much tugging up and over the
stomach.

My very first attendant suggested it 24 years ago, and I haven’t tried anything
else since. Of course I have had to find new types, but spandex by itself
doesn’t work for me and is extremely difficult to put on.

This is what I use: http://www.walmart.com/ip/23653086

The secret as with anything related to quads is to make sure that it is smooth
before putting on my jeans. It works for me so I am not going to try anything
else. If it ain’t broke why fix it, right?

Have a great day, it’s 39°for a high here to day after 78°last week –b! Joan

My quad belly bothers me more than any other change in appearance that
quadriplegia imposed. Gnarled fingers, atrophied legs, sunken chest? I can
manage. But the slow expansion of my belly bothers me constantly. The fact
that I can't seem to do anything to affect it is maddening. I know passing
40 has something to do with it. I know most guys of a certain age deal with
it. But being in the chair AND appearing fat even though I'm not really
overweight is so depressing. There are also practical problems. It makes
sex more challenging, for starters.

I'm not planning on anything silly like a tummy tuck, but man I would love
to hear some healthy way of slimming down my middle. Sigh.

What really causes a Quad belly? I can't believe it is just our guts sagging
down. To me, it must have something to do with our neurogenic bowels. I would
imagine over time that our bowels stretch out and therefore fill out with more
poop. So what do you think? Does anyone know if there have been any studies on
this?

I used one for 28 years. I helped for the first 15-20 years, but now it doesn't do much. Though it does help with dizziness when I'm too active, like eating.

Mine has been growing lately also, but I think mine is more a matter of a
little bit too much carbohydrates and the fact that I let my abdominal
binders get a little too loose and now my organs have began protruding more.

Do any of you guys wear abdominal binders? They helped me keep my quad
belly at bay for at least the first nine or 10 years. Since then it's been
a little bit more of a battle. I'm still waiting a fight though.

My quad belly seems to be growing no matter what I do. It looks like if you
poked me I would pop.
I'm not over weight, fairly skinny arms and legs. I've been working out and
watching what I eat.
I feel like I'm pushing my stomach out trying to make myself look pregnant.
But my belly is getting uncomfortable, when I try to bend forward, etc.
I wish those Ab Belts that shock your muscles to tighten would work, but I
heard they don't.
It would be great if a doc could just go in there and tie every thing back up.
I feel like all my inside stuff is lowering out of place.
Even my abdomen binder does not help hold things in place.

I know what you mean. Mine is driving me nuts, too. When I eat dinner in bed
(fed by someone), even though I'm hungry, my body feels full even before I
start. Then, before I have even eaten much, I'm full. But I'm still hungry.
So, a couple of hours later, I'm hungry again.

Those AB Belts, with batteries are not good according to the FDA which made
the importer take the product off the market. Eliminate all white flour
and sugar from your diet for a month or two and see what happens.

2009-10-27 Thread Quadius
I use abdominal binders to keep my quad belly at bay, but unfortunately I
have gained a little bit of weight over the last several years and am now a
little more rotund in the belly region.

I also let a couple of my binders get a little too stretched out and this
allowed my belly to develop a little more. I was just able to get two of my
binders sized down a little more so I could put more pressure on my belly,
thus making it easier for my blood pressure to stay elevated and my
breathing to remain regular.

The metal shanks in the sides to an unbelievable job in keeping my posture
straight. I don't know what I would look like if I didn't wear a binder.
You're right, it's definitely worth the three or four minutes by caregivers
spend getting it on me.

Maybe it does work-I really don’t have very large quad gut and I have been
doing the stretching ever since I became a quad. So maybe it is worthwhile.

That would be good advice for many, but I cannot reach for anything. However,
I am extremely flexible and I regularly-5-6 times daily lean forward and I can
lay my head between my knees. It’s a tremendous way to stretch my back, and
while I’m in the wheelchair I do pressure relief by dropping my hands down to
my feet and leaning forward on my legs. Of course, I can only do these things
if I have somebody to help me do them because we have to take all the straps
off.

One advantage of the body suit is that we have cut slits for all of my shirts
and sweaters and I can use my chest strap underneath my shirt with out if
rubbing on my skin, so no one knows I have the chest strap on. Vanity, thy

Lean forward on your bed while supervised. Keep reaching for your feet.
Concentrate on breathing. Always have supervision as this can be too much for
many of our respiratory systems. Each day, reach farther and longer. This can
also improve digestion. After a few months you can put your hands between your
feet. Your belly will be significantly smaller but please use SUPERVISION!
If AD begins then stop and dont lean so far. Your body needs to get used to
this. Just let gravity do the work.

It definitely helps me to breathe and because it is smooth it makes no marks
like a binder sometimes does. I’d hate to think what I’d look like without
it, especially if I gained any weight.
