Re: [QUAD-L] Why do Quads get light headed after eating? Do you?

2017-06-17 Thread Eric Olson

When you're a quad, you don't have muscles contracting forcing
blood back to your heart.  This causes blood to pool in your legs
(and can cause your feet to turn purple as somebody mentioned)
requiring compression stockings.  So, your body is sensitive to
any shifting of blood.  When you eat, blood naturally starts
shifting to your stomach and intestines causing you to get light
headed.  Some things to try that help me are reclining in my
chair, having someone lift my legs, and drinking some water.

But then I think, when you're in the situation and have to deal with this stuff
your level of being able to tolerate such things becomes, well, your level of
tolerance of life. No, the average AB hasn't dealt with this level and
therefore their tolerance of such things isn't as high, but it's at the level
of what they deal with in life. Adding just one more thing difficult of their
life can really stress them out, even though it may not "compare" to what we
deal with, just like adding something extra to what we deal with can then make
life pretty stressful when beforehand it was tolerable. Viewing it this way
helps me realize we're all in the same boat in a certain sense, if that makes
any sense… Jeff

It happens to me when I eat past my usual time, I feel like I start to get weak
so when I start eating I use what little strength I have left to chew so I get
light headed. It used to happen to me while in therapy as well, my therapist
would put pressure on my belly and that would help, or she would shake my legs
to get my circulation going.

If your breathing and/or cardiovascular system has been affected, diminished
due to your disability, then it happened because you aren't breathing while
eating. Try eating more slowly or take a couple bites and then take a break or
eat while you are tipped back.

I don't know how common it is for quads to get lightheaded while eating, but I
do have the problem occasionally. Usually when I'm eating something that is
really chewy. I find if I recline in the wheelchair for a couple minutes my
blood pressure goes back up and I can resume eating. That probably isn't of any
help to you but that is the only thing I have found helps.

Ditto, to Jeff. I have about the same problem and handle it the same way.
Usually it's because I've been doing too much talking,, talking why eating
or eating too fast.
