I use an M 300 with the corpus seating system. If you are using a corpus,
it shouldn't take more than a couple of seconds to move from one position
to another. Half a minute to tilt back? Absolutely unacceptable

please understand there;'s alot more than just matching a bracket to a 'chair
and
magically everything works-that's in a perfect world. sometimes the bolt will
hang you up on door thresholds, on the tops/bottoms of ramps, may interfere
with other items in your environment.
could hang you up getting into/out of the minivan ramp. the permobil does have
a close ground clearance. work with your local mobility dealer and 'chair
vendor and check your environment out and you should be ok.

some ezlock's work depending alot on the permobil, ground clearance, 'chair

their lockdown also requires their detachable seatbase. your mobility dealer

POWER WHEELCHAIRS, NEW VANS, and I'M GROWING!!!

** Yesterday, when my DEMO INVACARE TDX was still in the house... my husband
measured the seat pan to floor distance for the Invacare TDX and it is about an
inch lower than my current 12-year-old Permobile Chairman.

Like Quadius, when my van rocks back and forth for any reason... I also
will/can get my eyebrow area on the felt-like material of the indoor roof of my
minivan. Not to mention not being able to easily get under tables in
restaurants and home. So that inch might make a world of difference... or not.
Tough call.

** Here's an interesting tidbit of information:

Since I have pretty much been bedridden over the last year and a half
(because of my wound) ... the times that I HAVE had to get into my van to go to
the Wound Care or other places ... every time I go to get into my van it seems
like I have to bend my head down/forward further and farther each time. Then,
after I am in my van as a passenger... it seems like I keep sitting taller and
taller and taller. MAKING NO SENSE WHATSOEVER.

But when I went for my seating evaluation not long ago I mentioned this to
the Occupational Therapist and I think she figured out what/is was happening.
While I was used to sitting up in my chair for at least 7 hours every day ...
the spine or vertebrae are usually compressed little by little over time
(making me sit a little shorter). But having to be in bed 99.99% of the time
over the last year + that much time does not allow for any vertebrae
compression. So ALMOST the reverse has been happening over the last year! My
upper torso probably has been growing! :-)

To make it worse, I am always been pulled up (at least once a day) in bed
because I easily slide down in the bed on my rotating air mattress during the
day. So that stretches my upper torso as well. I don't think I would have ever
thought of that!

** And since my van is almost 13 years old (Braun Enter Van - Dodge) ... it
is also time for me to look for another van (for reasons of my own). So I have
had a minivan for the last 12 1/2 years. Before that I had 3 full-size vans
since my injury 31 years ago.

That is a whole other story/dilemma -- to stay with a minivan with all of its
pros and cons or go back to a full-size van with all of its pros and cons.
DECISIONS, DECISIONS!!! Since I have had both and already know the pros and
cons... it does not make the choice any easier! Especially when choosing a new
chair AT THE SAME TIME. One would think that might be easier but it's not.

  Are we twins Quadius? grin

I agree with all the limitations which Lori has adequately highlighted. I
might mention that my Permobile also tends to bounce around in my van a little
that I would like. In fact, I got a C. 350 so the seat to floor distance
would be lower, but I am still about a half-inch from the top of my Uplander.
My problem is that when someone takes a turn too quickly to the left or a speed
bump I risk hitting my head against the side molding. Now I'm thinking about
whether I might need to think about another van.

2010-11-10 Thread Quadius
I agree with all the limitations which Lori has adequately highlighted. I
might mention that my Permobile also tends to bounce around in my van a
little that I would like. In fact, I got a C. 350 so the seat to floor
distance would be lower, but I am still about a half-inch from the top of my
Uplander. My problem is that when someone takes a turn too quickly to the
left or a speed bump I risk hitting my head against the side molding. Now
I'm thinking about whether I might need to think about another van.

Re: [QUAD-L] Permobil or Invacare

2010-11-08 Thread Lori Michaelson
Well, I have been using the same *Permobile* *Chairman* of the last 12
years. So now it is finally time to look into other options. My biggest
complaint with the *Permobile* is that it sits too high. I can't fit under
most tables or, if I can, barely so. I don't drive but I can't see out my
van Windows which makes for poor drives (scenic or otherwise). From the
seat plate to the floor it is 18/2 inches (or close to 19 inches) and then I
have my wheelchair cushion on top of that.

Anyway, the *Invacare* chairs sit much lower so that is a plus.

Actually, my *Permobile* has treated me very well over all these years.
Which is good because they are made in Sweden and often times it will be
very difficult to get parts (even though they have a branch in Tennessee).
Fortunately, anything I have needed over the last 12 years... my vendor has
easily been able to fix and therefore I have not had to go more then one day
without my chair.

According to my vendor, if I am looking for a new chair (which I am) then *
Invacare* is probably the way to go because they had such a BIG VARIETY of
options (seating, backing, controls, etc.) and getting parts for them is
super easy compared to getting parts for a Permobile.

I was also considering the *Quantum* 600 (made by Pride Mobility) but not so
much now after my seating evaluation that was done a week ago today
(Monday).

There is nothing WRONG with going where they *Quantum* power chair ... it is
just that my vendor is telling me that Invacare is better to go with for not
only a huge amount of selections for seating and so much more as well as
easily getting parts.

However, he did say (for certain reasons I can't remember at the moment)
that perhaps I might want to stay with getting another Permobile.

My husband is in the process (as I write this) of taking a DEMO* INVARE FDX
*wheelchair back to the vendor today. I didn't even get a chance to write
here that my vendor got an Invacare FDX (latest model of the Invacare
chairs) for me to be able to try out (over this last weekend) before making
a final decision on what chair I do want. The *Invacare* *FDX* is
Invacare's latest model that has many cool features.

But when I first saw it on Friday, and over the weekend, it looks so Mickey
Mouse compared to the chair I am using. It is definitely smaller and more
compact. I easily fit into it ... it just looks so cheap.

Anyway, my husband picked it up on Friday, brought it home, he was pretty
sure that I would not be able to reach the joystick and the controls. Sure
enough, when I got into it late Friday afternoon... I could NOT reached the
joystick port controls am therefore I couldn't try it out all weekend! So
that was a wasted trip on Friday and now he has to take it back today!

What is really frustrating is that when he was down there on Friday and the
representative was showing him everything on the wheelchair (how this
feature and that feature works) my husband mentioned that It doesn't look
like Lori will be able to reach the joystick or controls but the guy didn't
say anything and did not respond. But what he DID say (after my husband
said that I probably would not be able to reach the joystick or controls)
was that They can't ALTER demos.* Well, what good is a DEMO if the person
can't use it to try it out???
*
Just another thing for my husband to have to do. And the vendor that we are
going through isn't exactly close by (with traffic and everything it is
probably 30 or 35 minutes).
*UPDATE* - As I am writing this... my husband just called me from the vendor
shop and told me that they are modifying the chair right now. So now he has
to bring it back, I have to try it out again and OF ALL WEEKS this is an
extremely busy one. So he has to worry about getting me in and out of that
chair during the 3 or 4 hour four hour timeframe that I can be up (cuz of my
wound area) as well as having to take it back to the vendor after I try it
out x-number of days.

BIG DECISIONS TO MAKE FOR AS CHAIR I'LL SIT IN FOR MANY YEAS TO COME!

Hi Eric,

If you much prefer your Permobiles over your Invacare solely due to
reliability I would be very leery of changing. ESPECIALLY after having TWO
Permobiles to more or less prove that.

Even though the dealer for A Quantum is much closer... just curious as to *
why* you would want to change? Because I would put reliability first
or before getting another chair.

For example, my dealer/vendor is not exactly close by for WHICHEVER chair I
use ... but I surely want one that I know has been reliable --- to avoid
going to the shop x-number of times.

Any idea when your Quantum will arrive? I know these days that it takes 6+
months to GET any new chair so it is just a waiting game for you or can you
call someone every once in a while to get an idea of when to expect it?

Thanks in advance!

Oh, I most definitely did not think you did not do your research! I know you
better than that. :-)

I am just curious (and I am sure that many other people are for when they
need new chairs) WHAT chairs people are choosing and WHY.

That is great that you are getting a leg bag opener put on it!!!

What color did you pick? The DEMO that my husband brought back today is a
shiny red color around the base and the tire rims. I like the red color but
not sure right now what color I will end up choosing.

Again, thanks again for your information! And hope you get it sooner than

I like the red color but not
sure right now what color I will end up choosing.

Again, thanks again for your information! And hope you get it sooner than
later!

  Hi Eric,

If you much prefer your Permobiles over your Invacare solely due to
reliability I would be very leery of changing. ESPECIALLY after having TWO
Permobiles to more or less prove that.

Even though the dealer for A Quantum is much closer... just curious as to
why you would want to change? Because I would put reliability first or before
getting another chair.

For example, my dealer/vendor is not exactly close by for WHICHEVER chair
I use ... but I surely want one that I know has been reliable --- to avoid
going to the shop x-number of times.

Any idea when your Quantum will arrive? I know these days that it takes
6+ months to GET any new chair so it is just a waiting game for you or can you
call someone every once in a while to get an idea of when to expect it?

  Thanks in advance!

I got the Chairman 2K through Apria.. The dealer should have gotten in

I have the C350 and while I think it's a pretty decent chair, I would
recommend going with the front wheel drive if you're used to a mid-wheel
drive.

You have to be cognizant of the weight, mine weighs in excess of 500 pounds
with me in it, I weigh 181 pounds.

You also need to be aware of that some of the front wheel chairs in the
Permobile name brand can be rather tall.

What year is yours? Is it an older or newer model?

Do there seem to be parts that need replaced fairly often, or does it

My particular chair is dampened quite a bit by the Magitek and is only able
to drive about 4.8 mph. This was what I was driving when the incident
occurred. Hopefully this won't happen anymore, but I'm probably going to
have to get some sort of cellular phone that can call my neighbors if it
does happen. Right now I don't feel secure enough to go around the block
too many times without letting people know where I'm at. It's sad because
everything is so well contained here that I normally don't have to worry.

my Invacare did the same kind of thing but it would stay powered up but had to
be turned off and back on to reset it. Just last year after three years of
uncertainty I can now power down my own chair and started back up again. It's a
little black box not made by Invacare or supported by them as just a simple
switch on my sip and puff control tube. I would have to ask my repair shop who
makes the box and besides that a couple months ago I had a friend install some
air horns that get anybody's attention within about a half a city block or
more! One time I stalled out on the railroad tracks with a freight train coming
and fortunately there was a police officer right behind me to help push me off
the tracks!

I have had numerous repairs done: motors, electrical etc. This is my fourth
permobil and it just seems the quality has really gone downhill.

More importantly, I ordered this RS seating unit. I have been using it for a

coincidental, but my discs are herniated and displaced, I have Arachnoitis and
my T1 vertebrae is dangerously close to puncturing the main aortic artery. I
am 20 years post and the probability leans toward normal (abnormal?) aging as a

Permobil has stopped manufacturing this seating unit both here and in EUR. Just

If your chair has the old 22nfd's then its not going 18 miles on one charge.
That is absurd bs. By the time they are six months old your going to worry
about trips to the mall. Hoverounds claim 15 miles to a charge. but it  is done
without anyone in the chair. Many of the chairs on TV use a U-1 battery. They
shouldn't leave home. It is barbie car batteries.
Cars get great milage if you get rid of the driver, too. My new TDX SP went 7
miles on its first charge. I didn't run it dead. It had between 20-30% left.
They don't last long if you run them dead. i'm using 24D's. Unfortunately, they
keep putting gell batteries in it. The maintenance free deep cycle has more
power and lasts longer. You just cant put it on an airplane. I fly about never.
I dont need $300 batteries with less power than a $100 battery. If you buy
batteries from your own pocket I highly recommed the Optima brand.

RE: [QUAD-L] Permobil and H-A Modular Mouthstick

2009-08-19 Thread Joan Anglin
It is built into the electronics which means I only have the chin controller
and no extra switch. My first chair had a chin controller and then the
clicker off to one side, which continuously moved away from my face. I
really prefer the electronics and modes all in one.

I looked at that mouthstick but cant justify the cost. I am also missing
two molars on the upper right which will probably prevent me from using the
particular Mouthstick. I am still using the one that was fabricated for me
at Santa Clara rehab and we just put more new mobile plastic on the
mouthstick as I need it. My reading mouth stick is made from an aluminum
arrow and works pretty well.

I can type pretty fast on the computer also, but I have gotten very lazy and
thoroughly enjoy Vistas speech recognition as I can dictate so quickly. I
still use my desktop computer and use the mouth stick for that, but prefer
my laptop.

Have a great day

RE: [QUAD-L] Permobil Responses

2009-08-18 Thread Joan Anglin
I am up 12 to 16 hours a day, and I must admit that occasionally my neck and
shoulders are very tired of the end of the day. But I utilized the chin
controller on a swing away while at rehab and did not like the fact that it
would bounce slightly away over rough terrain. Since we are situated on the
side of the mountain and all the terrain is rough I didn’t see that working,
so I opted for bib controller. I do not use a headrest as I like the fact
that I can tilt back and drop my head back to relax it so as to stretch my
neck and shoulder muscles during the day. It took me several months to
build up my shoulder and neck muscles so I could get rid of the head rest.
I just couldn’t see myself bouncing around on the ground with a headrest
while using a chin controller.

I have four drives on my Omega Trac wheelchair. Number one is high speed
with very little chin pressure needed-8 miles per hour, number two is slow
speed with very little chin pressure which I use around the house, number
three is high speed with more chin pressure which gives me a very good
control at a fairly fast rate of speed, and number four is very slow with a
very quick stop which I use getting on and off lifts, around people’s toes
etc J.

You can see the Omega Trac on the Next Mobility site-I love love love this
chair, but need to get something else in case it breaks and I can’t afford
to fix it. It has 4 inch ground clearance, and with the lift feature I can
easily go over 6 ½ inches and up a 9 inch curb or step. I liked the fact it
has a lifetime frame warranty, as I broke both the Invacare storm and my
quickie wheelchair frames.

Each of us has different needs and that is why these forums are so important
because so many of us have solved problems with innovative solutions and
then we can share them.

What kind of mouthstick do you use? I really need to get one that I can
read with that does not put pressure on my teeth.

Have a great day.

Joan

RE: [QUAD-L] Permobil

2009-08-18 Thread Joan Anglin
I also did not answer about changing modes. I change modes by a left click
on the chin controller than a right click to wherever I want. It makes a
beeping sound so I do not have to look at the display. I can turn the chair
on or off, drives, tilt, recline, or leg rest up or down. I cannot get
under tables because I sit so high, but that is only a concern when we go
out to eat because I need so much space around me that I get in other
people's way. I have to be fed anyway so getting under the table isn't a
big concern. Joan

Re: [QUAD-L] Permobil

2009-08-17 Thread Lori Michaelson
I have been using a Permobil Chairman since January of 1999 (the same
chair). I have found that there are pros and cons to ALL chairs. The
feature that I do not like is that it sits way higher than all the other
chairs. In other words, I have a hard time fitting under tables and can
barely see out my van. Uncool.

I will be in the same boat looking for a new chair at some point and I have
no idea what I'm going to do. The other problem with Permobils is that when
something goes wrong - it is very difficult for a waiting process to get the
parts in. The company is from Switzerland and, even though they do have one
office in the United States in Tennessee, that does not seem to make much
difference.

I do not need a chin control but when I go to look for a new chair and
whether I choose Permobil again as well... the chair will have to have a
Recline AND Tilt feature again which I have now. I do not know what I would
do without the tilt feature now for a myriad of reasons. And if I were going
to go the Permobil route again I would choose the up and down feature. I
did not get it with the current chair because that feature is used mostly
for people who can access upper kitchen cupboards and things like that but I
do not have enough movement to be able to open cupboards or things like
that.

However, when it comes to putting the batteries in -- it cannot be done
without turning the chair on its side or whatever they have to do to get the
batteries in. In my case, I have had to stay in bed while my husband has
taken the chair down to a vendor for replacement batteries. If I had chosen
the up and down feature -- they would easily be able to slide the old
batteries out and the new ones in with me in the chair.

Choosing a new chair is a tough call. Let us all have good luck when it is
time!

2009-08-17 Thread John S.
I always get invacare stuff, and the base price on my new chair
is $6500. Of course the final price is 25,000. Since base on peremobiles are
mostly above $20,000 it may be difficult to get CMS or even an insurance
company to go for it.
Ultimately, most chairs boil down to comfort scale. If you don't fit  in it
right you will never like it. Peremobiles do rock and are far better but
invacare keeps trying to stay 10 years behind. Always working toward
mediocrity.
It does make you mad that a peremobile aleady has most of the additions
standard invacare has to add on. Good luck getting one.

RE: [QUAD-L] Permobil

2009-08-17 Thread Greg
I had a Permobil for about 6 years. My first non-rear-wheel drive chair.

I thought it the most comfortable chair I had been in. But it had lots of
problems at first. The electronics kept going out, the tilting, reclining,
fuses, etc.

After they rebuilt it from frame up, it was great for years.

BUT THEN!!! While reclining the back/recliner-bar broke and I fell backwards
until laying flat. I thought all that happened was a bruised hip. But a year
later my leg would not lay flat and had huge pains. The injury caused
calcium to start growing on my hip into the muscles. Not fun.

A year after that the frame broke and was unfixable.

I liked it other wise. Just wish it was faster.

I love the X850, the front wheels extend out for higher speeds, but still
not fast enough.

The K450 is a fantastic idea for kids. It lowers them to the floor.

At lest they are trying new ideas.

I have a C500 with chin control. It has worked out well for me. I like the
front wheel drive of the C500. If you are use to a rear wheel drive it does
take some getting use to having to give your self more clearance in the back. I
have the harness , but it is well balanced so you don't  notice the weight on

Hi Sean

I too am looking for a new chair, and I'd just google Permobil C350 reviews
500cs and check what others have liked and disliked about the chair. It
seems to get mostly positive reviews. However, it does weigh 375 pounds and
has a top speed of 6.5 miles per hour. My omega trac weighs 420-440, and
that puts me right at 570 pounds. That means I have to have an extra heavy
duty lift, and it is only 30 pounds lower than the maximum that our access
buses can pick up. That might be a consideration for you.

Why do you not want to wear a chin controller around your neck? The
drawback of course is that it is rather heavy, but for me a very big plus is
that it cannot bounce away from me so that I am unable to reach it when I am
by myself. I also wear it lower when I am by myself, which enables me to
easily reach my mouth stick for reading or computer or getting myself a
drink without the chin controller being in my way.

when I break it, I have to fit the bill, believe me the parts aren't
cheap But I get superior milage from it! Like bigtime miles on 1
charge!!! I recomend them to anyone. It is time for me to get a
replacement through medicare/Medicaid they r just now starting to
cover the permobile! So that is great! I need rear wheels for my
permobile now, the threads r showing. That comes out of pocket, I can
try eBay or even craigslist. Hope I find some anywhere cheap! But good
luck, hope this info is useful.
As far as chin control and mode buttons, I would speak to my wc tech,
the person who sized u up, they should be aware of that kinda stuff.

individual driving a Permobile who was about the same height as me in the
chair and is as tall as I am. I just need to find out what type of
Permobile it is.

Actually it says 12km/h which translates to 7.44 mph.

I am considering a Permobile, but I definitely do not want to be any taller
than I am already. I sit just a little under 5 foot right now and any
taller would make it next to impossible to do the things I currently enjoy.

Hi...I have a Permobil c500.with elevation. Great chair.

Why would being tall be a problem...except for getting under tables.

Thanks

2007-06-24 Thread John S.
Am I the only one thats bumped someone in a crowd? At 12 miles an hour I'd
start doing broken bones. Awesome chair but I like my centerwheel configuration
with separate legs cause mine dont match and I have protection on the sides of
my legs. Guess it is a matter of what you're use to. I take drugs so I can't
depend on not hitting stuff as a talent. I'm not far from needing a helmet..lol.
